THanks for the breakdown! It'd be great if your channel had a playlist of straight information like this.

Attention gardeners in the greater SF Bay Area: It's in our municipal water and using it it your garden will kill about 30% of the beneficial bacteria in your soil. The best inline filters only remove about 70% of chloramines. in order to be 98% effective, you'd need to put four in sequence and greatly reduce the flow. To remove chloramines completely, you need to treat it with at approximately 1 gram of sodium ascorbate per 48 gallons of muni water (OK to use the same amount of vitamin C for acid loving plants like blueberries and sweet potatoes). That's just a starting point, but it will be close for our water. For other parts of the country, check with your local water district for the recommended dosing rate.

8 years ago I moved from NYC to Florida and the same exact week we moved here, I started to have burning after urinating. Sorry if this is tmi. I had many tests done and no urinary tract infections or anything. I suffered every single day with pain. I had just had a baby a few months before I moved here and thought maybe it was due to my pregnancy and it was something I would have to live with. Anyway, a few months ago, I saw a thread on NextDoor, and people who had just moved into the community were complaining about the water. They said that the water was green and smelled very strongly of chlorine. One woman had a rash after showering her first time after moving here. A few other people said their cats died soon after moving here. I looked at the website for the water department and read that they use Chloramine to disinfect the water and sometimes use straight Chlorine. So I stopped using the water to wash my private areas. I only use bottled spring water. It has been about 2 months and I have not had any pain at all. It is the first time in 8 years that I did not have pain or burning. Is it possible that this chemical was causing my skin problems?

People have told us that they have experienced reactions to chloramine that they may not have experienced with chlorine. With any health-related issue, we always advise you consult with your healthcare provider. However, you may be interested to know that Hydroviv Shower Filters are formulated to filter both chlorine and chloramine.

Just subbed thanks for this info! My water utilities company just switched to free chlorine for 3 weeks to "clean" the water pipes system for the whole town. The smell & odor is very strong. They claim to normally use chloramine the rest of the time. But during these last 2 weeks of them switching to free chlorine my stomach feels more acidic when drinking the water, same with my gf's stomach, alomst like heartburn symptoms & slightly irritated stomach even when drinking it through our fridge built in higher grade filter for the ice & water from fridge. Is that normal/ safe? What are your thoughts on this filter we use in the fridge for ice/ water for drinking? (Every Drop by Whirlpool #4)

Hi Kyle. Thanks so much for subscribing and for your question. We hear this a lot actually. The same thing happens where we are in DC. Honestly, it sounds like the filter you have for your water and fridge line isn't cutting it. Granted, we're partial to our fridge line filters but they're customized & designed specifically to be heavy duty to avoid situations like this. Our chemists definitely take this type of thing into consideration when formulating our city-specific filters. Hope this helps!

Hydroviv drinking water filters use a sophisticated blend of activated carbons to effectively remove chlorine and chloramine from water (our Water Nerds look up which disinfectant your city uses, then adjust the media in your filter accordingly). Our shower filters are designed to remove both chlorine and chloramine.
