Tapas absolutely came about through using a piece of bread or meat (usually salted - to keep the customer drinking) to cover a drink. In Spanish, Tapas are 'covers' or 'tops'. Over time, bar owners would add a small sample of the local food specialities as a way of selling meals to their clientele. Small 'porciones' are individual tapas and 'raciones' are tapas that are designed to share. Must admit that whilst I baulk at some tapas (or at least did when I went to Seville - Octopus tentacles in particular I just couldn't tackle), others are very simple but extremely tasty!

To the tapas - Little food on little plates I think that’s the gist of tapas there. What does it matter which is which. And it’s nice where can you go wrong. Just going through your uploads Mac as iv been a Chef for 30 years worked all over the world , that to me is not Tapas ! , I had a Tapas bar and most of my clients were Spanish , everything home made 6 fresh breads on a morning 10 dishes was 35 euros on a lazy Sunday evening ! , do like your channel though !

Goes through what to expect at a tapas evening/event'meeting/experience etc, basically small bits of food that are cheap, eaten over the course of a couple of hours with friends, ordering a tapa 10/20 minutes after each one, or even moving from bar to bar having a drink and a tapa in each bar (great tapas tours around Madrid!!). It's been lost with tourism really. Oooooo you went for lomo!!!!! I love it!!!! It's like the meat part of the bacon/bacon medallion, but seasoned in a spicy paprika sauce on the outside! Great price, tapas looked great, if you'd of spread that out over a couple of hours with another couple of tapa each, then that would of been very genuine as they weren't all served on bread as pinxos 😊 And lomo tapa! You're correct! Tapas was originally a piece of bread provided to cover your drink and stop the flies getting in. Most of the genuine all Spanish places serve tapas free with a drink and are meant to be a very small selection of the food on offer. The places in Benidorm where you go are serving a variation but are far to big to be an original idea of a tapas and as far as I am concerned have been adapted to corner the 'British' taste for have something slightly more substantial to eat ie: 'The Open Sandwich'. Fifty years ago you would never have seen anything like the size and style of those tapas!

Spent many a happy hour in those old town bars a bit further up from where you are and the tapas is free as long as you are drinking 😊😊 be there again in July Lee 😀 😉

The TAPAS in Tapas Ally you pay for different prices for different ones They are not free .They are run by Spanish and Frequented by Spanish They call them Tapas so who are we to argue . the TAPAS you get t for free are very small But then if you are paying between 1.50/1.80 for the drink and a tapa it's small
It’s been a while since I’ve had Tapas but yes I do like it. I never knew the purpose of it was to cover your drink with a piece of bread. I kind of imagined it was small dishes of different foods. Learn something every day. Beautiful weather there Lee. Freezing here in UK.

It is Tapas but not Authentic. Tapas is small portion of anything. Best Tapas bars close to marinas or market. Andalusia you get Free tapas with every alcoholic drink. Try Malaga stunning or Torremolinos and Benalmadena.
Looked nice but I am gonna be a Janice 😂. Should be in a Spanish bar and you get what they have put onto the bar. No chilled cabinets where you select as part of a menu. Go to Barcelona or Seville, Malaga. Great vlog as always 😍
They are Spanish owned and there is an enormous selection Frequented by Spanish It's packed there do the Tapas are prepared and kept cold They couldn't make the Tapas quick enough if not prepared Beforehand
@@paulaemartin674 exactly what I am saying. In the old Spanish quarters you don't select, you get what they have prepared for that day and evening. No chillers to select from. Buy a drink and some tapas given for a set price. You take what is given like it or not.
I suppose that the value, with wine, is very good; I've never had Tapas, but I would think that, to some extent, Tapas alley may have been 'doctored-up' for the tourist's palette. Going out to a small Spanish provincial town and trying their Tapas' May give you a proper, genuine offer.
Hi Lee, you were probably in the best tapas bar in Benidorm there, food looks great. I always have what Jeff was eating, superb. There’s also another cheaper tapas area called Taperia La Mina. Yeah the bread to keep the fly's off is true then an eagle eyed pub owner saw the people .nibbling on the bread and saw a business opportunity,also top tip I wore a new white polo shirt and got the oily chorizo down the front thought it was bin time ,but a guy got two baby wipes put one on the inside of the stain one on the outside told me to press them together for two mins and it worked a dream
No patatas bravas? I've never had them on bread. They are starters to be enjoyed as you glug sherry or wine. Would love you to visit Italy Lee where you get free snacks in bars as long as you keep drinking. Try Bologna or Trieste, where I fell in love with Aperol Spritz. Paid a visit to La Cava Aragonesa last week. Definitely the best. A must try is the Zarajo, lamb stomach in garlic sauce €4.25 and worth every cent.

I've heard that the reason they stuck Lime Wedges in beers was to keep the flies out too so there must be some truth to the bread Tapas story too.

Love tapas alley. Couldn’t find any crab tapas last year when I was there. I would give it a 8.5 on what I saw. The last one didn’t do it for me.
