What a beautiful spirit he had! So gentle - his musicians must have adored making music with him.

What a musical interview. Italian is a song, and this man shows such admiration for Beethoven with his words and feelings.

Abbado non era solo un grande della musica, ma anche un amabile uomo che si poneva con garbo, cordialità e modestia

The demise of this great Italian musician/conductor has elicited so much response from all over the world. Even Karajan's departure from this world never had the same kind of response. Not even Carlos Kleiber, who, perhaps, was also a legend in the same mould as Abbado despite the former's dearth of recordings. R.I.P. maestro.

Abbado was the humblest and most human of the greats. RIP indeed.

This wonderful artist was kind enough to sign my Tchaikovsky 4th with the VPO cd, and when the pen didn't work at first, he looked at me, saw the look in my eyes, tried one more time and then managed to scribble his autograph. Of course I'll never forget it.

One sees this in Haydn as well. The different movements of the symphonies and concertos have some sort of mathematically comparative relationship of tempi.

And that is why he was such a wonderful conductor - ever searching, ever thoughtful. But he need a wonderful orchestra (the BPO for instance) to carry out his agenda!

Too bad they could not have finished the finale of the Seventh for the documentary. I know they showed the part that illustrated CA's point, but still it's kind of inhuman to cut it off where they did. CA was a great human being and a great conductor, probably the best conductor of Mahler we have ever seen. The Lucerne videos of the Mahler cycle are just unbelievably good--so much so that it spoils one for Mahler performances among still-living conductors, who simply do not "get it" the way CA did.

so let's just reinterpret Beethoven's metronome markings - why not ? - since these great conductors fail to understand what a metronome mark actually means, they come up with nonsense like "relative values" and "tempi ratios" to justify their performance practices - the human capacity and proclivity to be blind to the truth right in front of them only increases with the honors, acclaim and prestige that is given to them
