it's a tiny course with a lot of slow speed corners. None of these older videos show reality on most race courses around the world, much less longer than 3-5 laps. Tsukuba is a poor course for seeing what normal cars can do on a racing circuit. It's a full size sedan which was massive for the time, compared to the small sedans it's racing it still did really well considering the horrible start and wet track. Would be comical to drive one of those cars today vs the M5 today, that's assuming they're still running.
Tsukuba is short, very twisty and in this case wet, Best Motoring is well known for it's JDM bias aswell. That being said, the M5 is no track car, it is heavy. Give it a more open track and would be a different story.
That version of Legacy in Japan was a proper sports sedan. We didn't get a fast versions of the Legacy in North America with the exception of the 1st and 4th generation. However, up to the 4th generation the rest of the world got really fast Subaru Legacys. The first generation Legacy still holds the 100 000 km FIA endurance record with an average speed of about 139 mph over some 400 plus hours. Colin McRae won his first WRC event in a Subaru Legacy.
