I'm with the people who hate tom lol He's not so much a bad guy as he is a terrible husband. He's a nice guy genuinely pretty funny and on paper a good guy. But oh my god i cannot stand men who weponize incompetence, the way he literally does not respect Lynette's need for her career and definitely just treats her as an incubator for his kids in the earlier seasons, he is constantly so emasculated and threatened by her talent which is just so annoying. He kept Kayla and Norah a secret from Lynette and then blamed her for his kid being out of control and never actually set a boundary with his child! Then it came out that he slept with Renee (Lynette's college bff) and never told her !!! The whole Jane situation was also awful. Oh and i forgot to mention the whole mid life crisis bc oh my god he was being so selfish and just seemed like he didn't really care for his family and just cared about getting his way. He also always made Lynette look like the bad parent and never stood up for her even in front of their own kids , constantly undermining her. As you can see i really hate tom lmao
I’ve always saw Tom as the female version of Susan. They’re both have quirky and immature personalities but they both lack major self awareness and always find ways to blame others for their faults rather than taking personal responsibility and learn from their mistakes. Both of them are probably my least favorite main characters on the show.
I agree, but do hate how she treated him too in later seasons. She just insulted him all the time and did not support him that much either. I felt that they were toxic for each other.
Tom confuses me because he always knew that Lynette didnt want more kids. Multiple times she begged not to get pregnant again. I’ve been pregnant twice and i think it’s disgusting how Tom invalidates how awful pregnancy is for Lynette. Doesnt matter how many times you get pregnant IT IS DIFFERENT EVERY TIME. You really resent your partner if they abandon you when you have kids. I think that Lynettes last baby was her last straw. She became more bitchy because Lynette gave up her entire life for Tom, to have his kdids. Yet he has 7 midlife crises, and never lets Lynette help him FROM THE GET-GO. Had he honestly involved Lynette at first, most of the issues would’ve gone away very fast. But Tom would not stop being emmasucalted by Lynette. Despite Tom doing the exact same thing to her by making her a Baby Machine and then LEAVES HER after the years of bullshit. Like yeah, Lynette was controlling. But honestly? That was the worst thing she was. Yes, she almost got involved with Rick during the restaurant time, BUT Tom treated Lynette like she ruined the restaurateur opening despite Tom failing himself, and only letting Lynette help him when he was beyond fucked. Tom even refused to get a vasectomy in case he remarried after Lynette died. Imagine. Being sick every single day for 9 months, it is traumatic. I will never ever get over my horrible 2nd pregnancy experience. I would not stay with a man who would keep his ability to have kids knowing that i want to unalive myself from how traumatic pregnancy can be. JUST IN CASE HE REMARRIES. No Fuchk you. Marriage is supposed to be forever and that is weird he wouldnt do something to help you or keep you safe.
A character I wish would have been used more was Eli Scruggs. He was in that one episode and obviously dies in it but he was just such a sweet guy and was actually quite an important character (without him Gabby probably wouldn’t have been part of the inner circle, Bree wouldn’t have finished the cookbook, etc.) It would have been nice to have him appear in more episodes through flashbacks.
Gabby was entertaining but so frustrating. Susan was dumb as a bag of rocks. Tom scavo was such a total man baby with severe anger issues. I really loved Bree’s character progression as well as the sweet relationship that developed with Carlos and Gabby. McKlusky was fabulous from start to finish, just a gem. She was funny, so smart, and really selfless.
Oh that's actually such a great point about Parker. The pre time jump Parker was actually one of my favorite kids. He was a great character. And then the post time jump Parker was completely forgettable and mostly ignored. The last season I kept forgetting he was one of the Scavo children until he made a rare appearance.
Agree. I think they focused too much on the twins in seasons 5 and 6, and on Penny in season 8. Parker had a big screen time in seasons 2 and 3, and completely forgotten after that. I'm not sure about it, but il also may be due to the actors playing the kids not being as available as the adult ones regarding filming and shooting schedule.
For me - Mike was the biggest meh character for me. His death hurt me for Susan and MJ but that was about it. I feel like his writing just flatlined after season 1. Anyone else??
Mike is definitely a mid character for me and it’s a bit strange that his character is the “poster boy” male character of the show. For me, the best male character on the show is Carlos Solis.
Absolutely! Mike doesn't have a real identity. He always has to be attached to someone or something for him to work: Noah, Susan, Eddie, MJ, etc. The rest of the husbands had something Mike always lacked.

Though I loved their couple with Susan, I don't understand why they kept his character after season 1. It seems like they wanted to kill his character but eventually changed their mind.
I've been waiting for people to rediscover desperate housewives for years now and I'm so excited I'm seeing more people watch this show and realize how amazing it is. This is probably my favorite show of all time. I've never had someone watch this show and not like it, regardless of who you are
Didn’t care less and always ignored it when it aired on TV back in the day, but boy am I glad to have finally gave it a go after 20 years because it is one of the greatest series.
I agree with everything in this, except putting Tom Scavo over Carlos Solis. For me, Tom is definitely under the "shut i bitch" category because he really is a bitch. I HATE how he is so childish. He always puts his family at risk to pursue his own little quirky interests, such as him quitting his job and starting collage even though the family already have problems with their economy. Every single time Tom makes these mistakes, Lynette always questions them, which is fair because they are so irrational and stupid, which just leads to them fighting and him calling her controlling and rude, and I find Tom doing this SO SO SO disrespectful due to him being well aware of Lynettes childhood trauma regarding her mom being abusive towards her and her sisters which has led to her acting controlling. Not to mention that he did not even care that Lynette did not want a single child, but she still had four kids and he always wanted more kids and did not really give her credit for being a great mom until she called him out. I think there is a scene in one of the first episodes of season one when Tom comes home from work and Tom tells Lynette "let's risk it" in bed, once again ignoring the fact that Lynette does not want to get pregnant. He also ALWAYS lied to Lynette, like about Carla. He is just so selfish, childish and rude. Every time he opens his mouth to yell at Lynette I wish I literally could reach through the screen and slap him, because there were few moments Lynette deserved the energy Tom gave her, when she always showed him and her family so much love (in her own way). Did not enjoy his character for a second and one of the reasons Lynette is one of my favorite housewives (next to Edie and Bree) is because I have soooo much respect for her for putting up with that little stinking bitch Tom Scavo. I am so sorry, but I really hated his character: OUUFFF AND THE SCENE WHERE HE CALLED LYNETTE A BITCH DO NOT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THAT. I think DH tried to create a kind of Phil Dunphy and Claire Dunphy from Modern Family relationship between Lynette and Tom, which they did by making Lynette the strict and controlling parent and Tom the chill one, but Tom is faaar away from being the superb dad and husband that Phil succeeds to remain during every single episode of Modern Family. Anyway, Carlos is so sweet: Rude in the beginning, yes, but it is his character development that makes him one of the greatest and sweetest characters in the whole show. He is just so wholesome when he is blind and works as a masseur, I just loved that beard on him and I loved how he reacted when he saw Juanita and Celia for the first time - just the sweetest man on Wisteria Lane if you ask me. Loved this video!!! More people should talk about DH on RUclips (I just had to comment this because you said you wanted to look into why people hated Tom)
I agree with everything you said! As the show progressed Tom turned into this big man baby that Lynette had to care for and Carlos grew into a GOOD man. He was so arrogant in the beginning but he transformed himself and family dynamic. And regardless of everything I think he truly loved Gabi. Their character develop is so good tho, kudos to the writers/actors.
Tom is my least favorite character out of all the husbands on the show. He’s immature, irresponsible, doesn’t take personal responsibility for his actions, and is heavily dependent on Lynette to take care of him and their 5 children but hates feeling “emasculated” by her. He just exudes a lot of bets made energy. Carlos is my favorite out of all the husband characters because he is everything that Tom is not! Carlos is definitely more masculine or alpha but to the point where he has complete dominance over his wife Gabby. He’s a really good husband to Gabby (after they got remarried) and he knows whenever Gabby is feeling unhappy and always says the right things to cheer her up. Carlos is also way more of a hands on father when raising his kids, more than Tom, more than all of the husbands on the show. Finally, he’s hard worker and a great provider who doesn’t run to Gabby every time he fails, unlike Tom!
Bree is my favorite character out of all the housewives, Carlos is my favorite out of all the husbands, and Julie is my favorite out of all the kid characters on the show.
Same. Carlos and Gabby had great arcs together. Bree is just a queen who deserved more sometimes. The parallels between Bree and Mary Alice killed me, but was written so well.

I hated Susan & Mike, 2 cringe characters, when Mike did anything wrong it was considered ok like wtf. Him Dying was the best thing his role did. Susan was such an annoying character, awful mom & person. Worst thing was that she wasn't self aware. I love a good villain or someone who is aware they have flaws, but Susan considered herself a saint & always played victim while being awful really pissed me off
I wish Renee could’ve gotten with Keith. She wanted a child but one she could connect with. He had a son who also was a person of color, which would’ve helped Renee have a bond with him. As she stated she didn’t want a baby, but a kid.

32:34 i’m so glad you mentioned this, this show and a lot of other shows never even consider abortion as a potential option. it’s always either have the baby or put it up for adoption and they always end up having it, i would’ve preferred if julie had put the baby up for adoption, it just didn’t make sense for someone like her to want to raise a kid despite getting her phd to become a doctor etc. i can understand why danielle carried thru with the pregnancy bcus Bree would never allow for an abortion bcus of the families beliefs and risk of a scandal of someone from her church found out
It's because the show was airing on ABC, which is more of a family channel featuring family values. And ABC at the time was already part of the Disney business group so they were sort of tied regarding issues such as abortion. But I get your point.

Susan was never ever mean, her bad acts were all acidental or just reactions because she is impulsive and emotional. She was cleary describe in the show many times as a kind person, as someone that cares for others and tries to help everybody, just because she is an adult doesn't mean she can't be adorable. Sorry but for me she is, she has this artistic way of seeing life if you can't reach that you watched wrong. It's a tv show there is no subliminal intentions in any character, she was written good and her deeds confirm that, the fact she forgave more than anyone and never did something to hurt others on purpose also are a huge tip for you that you are not understanding something in the show. 😉
Fun facts! The actor who played Dave is devoutly religious and would not do any kissing scenes or scenes where Edie wasn't properly covered up. The actress who played Betty is Alphie Woodard and she is one of the most highly acclaimed actresses in history. Andrea who plays Angie only agreed to one season because she was a New Yorker and didn't like LA. She went on to star in The Sopranos and she was a perfect fit for that show.
Why is Carlos so hated? He is so funny, smart yet dumb and he got cheated on! I felt sorry for him so much because he always got walked over by gabby. Elite character imo
To me DH is the best show that has ever come out. I really don’t think there will be a show as incredibly unhinged and entertaining as this. It does have its flaws as you mentionned like the slut shaming, racial stereotypes, creepy underage relationships and all that.. yikes. But it is just so well written, the characters are so well fleshed out, and it just flows naturally from season to season and literally NEVER. GETS. BORING, which is crazy considering there are 8 seasons with maybe like 20+ 40min long episodes per season? Like ?? No show will ever top this. & btw my top 5 favourite characters are gaby, bree,lynette, karen and eddie (susan can choke!!). and my top 5 worst characters are alejandro (should’ve had a more painful death), dave, paul, george and rex. Now dave, paul & george are absolutely iconic, they’re some of the best villains i’ve ever seen in a tv show, but just the thought of them gives me nightmares lmao.. In hindsight I really liked the Applewhites, Betty was an absolute badass and Caleb was so sweet, and Matthew made for a surprisingly good villain, really the big issue with their mystery was the terrible pacing, which is why I think the Bolens fared better since their mystery was better planned out and the strangler mystery picked up the slack whenever the Bolens were not in the spotlight.
I honestly liked Danielle’s end arc. Where she starts a business and reconciles with Bree. I like that she is never portrayed as smart but finds something she is good at and succeeds- without a man.
All your top favorites are my top favorites. The way I was so invested in this show. It’s easily my favorite show. But I would put Carlos in the live tier because him and Gabby were my favorite characters but everyone on the top are literally my favorite people in the show
This show is one of the best shows I’ve watched. The characters are so complex, they have so many flaws, which makes the show seem so real. Even the main characters make you hate them sometimes. Bree is such an amazing character I loved her from the pilot, and Rex really did her dirty! Later on they show Bree’s mother talk about the “mask” and she tried to open up to her and he tells her she’s being stupid for saying how she feels. So why would she be vulnerable in front of him when he’s complaining about her saying he’s living in a detergent commercial. Andrew was one of my favorites as well with his one liners, and I loved when he and Bree were working together and getting along and they did him dirty in the end of the show! Susan and Lynette were very up and down for me, I rooted for them but I didn’t really like their characters. I will say Lynette pretty much tried to do the right thing, but she was put into some very compromising situations. Tom put her through hell acting like a whiney little man child, and then dumps her as soon as he starts making money! Then he gaslights her into thinking she’s a bad person. She’s harsh, blunt, and speaks her mind..but he knew that going into their marriage! The whole Jane thing and Nora storyline was sickening. But also Lynette seems like she’s never happy, she’s never content with any decision she makes. When I started watching the show I was realizing that the characters are pretty much my pretty much my parents age in the time it was filmed and airing on tv, which is when I was a teenager (early 2000s) and now watching it at the age I am now, makes me relate with the characters in a strange way because I’m married with children but they remind me of how I grew up. I know total mindfuck! Haha. I will say though, how they spoke about issues like body weight and that stuff is accurate to how my parents and my friends parents spoke to us when we were kids. It didn’t age well, but nonetheless accurate. Such a good show with an amazing cast and now I see why it was so popular back in the day!

Tbh I’m not a fan of the double moral with putting Gabrielle in the top when she’s a full on groomer. Like even when everyone’s aware she’s a terrible being and there’s no secret about it, not like with what they tried with Ezra. But it’s still like okay, owning it, doesn’t make it better. It’s like with Jenna being called an icon. It’s weird, bc it’s like yes they are hilarious in other scenes but things like this tarnish them fundamentally but ppl ignore it as if she doesn’t belong to all the groomer,predator men below. Idk it’s just rubs me the wrong, why are they doing this to these characters that are otherwise so iconic!!
I think Gabby gets away with all of her bad behaviors on the show by fans is because she’s both beautiful and funny. Society tends to overlook bad behavior from attractive people and people tend to be more forgiving towards other people that can make them laugh. Despite all of her flaws, Gabby is still one of my favorite characters in the show. I admit, I’m also part of the problem, in regards to legitimizing unfair double standards with my personal biases! 🤷♂️
Bree is my favorite as well. I love the fact that she has all the ingredients to be someone that people cannot get behind with our viewpoints beliefs, and things of that nature but yet she is still majority of people‘s favorite character. They thought they ate with Susan and thought that was gonna be people’s fave, but Marcia said hold my drink… because she devoured that character. I just wish she got more accolades for it.

I used to love Lynette and the more I rewatched it, the more she got on my nerves. I actually wanted her and tom to get divorced. Don’t get me wrong, I am not a fan of tom either, but he had to suffer as much verbal abuse and criticism from Lynette as him not doing enough for her in the earlier seasons. I felt they were both toxic for each other. I respected her when she advocated for people as she should. But scenes like tom’a conference bugged me. I understand that she wanted to attend the events, but she should not have judged the crafts and stuff they set up for the spouses. I felt she was way too judgmental on stuff like that and disrespects the people who enjoy it.
I loved your character analysis of Desperate Housewives. Now a few corrections. The person you called Rob that almost had an affair with Lynette in season 3 is actually Rick. Ellie, the drug dealer that stayed with Carlos and Gabby was shot and killed by Wayne Davis the abusive cop husband of Katherine Mayfair The woman that died in the tornado episode was Sylvia the mistress Adam slept with in Chicago causing the Mayfair family to move back to Wisteria Lane. I wasn't too fond of the Applewhite family either especially since they had Mathew a 19 year old "dating" Danielle who was not even 17 yet but that climatic scene where Bree was willing to die for her daughter was epic. The Bolen family was so much more likable than the Applewhites. Speaking of the Bolens, I also loved the dynamic between Angie Bolen and Danny. especially when you see Angie going full mama bear in order to protect Danny. She pretty put Susan in her place.. It was so sad when Danny overdosed because he was lonely and depressed and being rejected by Julie didn't help matters at all. The mother son dynamic between Angie and Danny was a much more healthy relationship than Susan and Julie here's why I say this. Towards the end of season 6 when the Bolen family had to separate, Angie make it a point to say that she and Nick had to stop being selfish and let their son Danny live his own life whether if it's with Ana or not. Basically they selflessly gave up their son Danny for his freedom to live his life without being a fugitive and it was such a heartfelt goodbye. SECRETLY I was hoping that Danny and Dylan Mayfair would get together because they both shared a similar bond of being in a family keeping secrets. I think Dylan and Danny would have been a much better pair than with Ana. Susan on the other has been nothing but selfish towards Julie her whole entire childhood and Julie had every right to call her out on it. I disagree about Gloria. I LOVED Gloria because she was evil to the bone the part that gets me is she holds Orson responsible for her husband's death when she's the one that did and than forces him to hide Moniques body after she killed her while holding that her husband's death on Orson. Orson I think is a psychopath. Orson did worse to Bree more than Chuck and George put together. He stalked her for months even during her brief relationship with Keith, blackmailed her, murdered Chuck and than used her darkest moments against her such as sending her the blackmail letter with the exact words like Mary Alice that nearly spiraled her out of control to the point of her almost committing suicide. Lastly, Bree was such an iconic character. I think she changed the most out of all the other housewives. Its funny how the series started out with Bree being so robotic and prim proper tight housewife but after season 3 she overtime really started to losen up. Even when the series started it seemed that Susan was the leader the pack, the main lead of the group but overtime especially the final season Bree was the one that took the lead. One last thought I felt the final two seasons were a way of tying up lose ends from seasons 1 and 2 because the creator Marc Cherry knew he wanted to end the series. Im glad they got to end the series while it was still good and Marc got to end it the way he wanted.

I feel like the Applewhites also had the air of criminalality to them. Not their appearance but more so their behavior. They were very dodgy and off. The actors were really good. And Matthew really was a monster and he had to pretend to be someone else. His mother was emotionally incestual towards him, not ina sexual way, but emotionally and mentally. She had a strong grip on him, because she thought he was the “good” son, so to speak, until it was revealed who he truly was. A criminal who also lied to his mother and betrayed his brothers innocence. Made his mentally immature brother believe women liked him, and to ignore obvious signs of dislike. That is a betrayal of a new order.

me i love love love gabby and bree. my favorites !! after them edie and i also like susan she is quirky and cute, yes sometimes toxic but all of the people in this show are. so i dont get all the hate ! me i really didn’t like mike !like he was in serious debt, drug addict, previous convict etc. like people romantizise him way too much ! also i dont like lynette. she went through the most and i symphatise with her but just found her so so annoying ! and tom omg he is at the bottom.
All the male characters rankle me a little in some way, but at the top of my rankle list has to be Carlos, that funny smile he does, siding with his rude and spoilt kids against Gabi, siding with anyone except Gabi, a thin veneer of machismo and likes to be seen helping people, but he should be helping his own family and not just as a provider, Im talking about instilling courtesy and honesty, his furtive financial dealings, and anger issues, and hes abusive to Gabi. He positions himself as good and a changed man but is he really? I know shes no angel but he really pees me off. And I wont get started about petulant man child Tom and his endless selfish hobbies that he makes his whole personality about, or creepy, slimy, deceitful Orson, I think his issues may partially stem from being closeted though. Lee is really annoying, hes over blunt and rude and enjoys upsetting people and causing drama. Creepy George, unappreciative Rex, deranged creepaholic David Dash, with his Aquarianesque disturbing facial countenance, boring wooden Mike, all of Susans exes, especially Ian, and the teenage Scavo twins. Obviously they are all eminently watchable for their character deficits, thats the whole point, but it would be nice to see an actual decent, strong, kind, smart and non threatened male character, I guess Andrew when he grew up and wasnt a teenage nightmare was the best male on it, he has Brees back and seems grounded and sensible. The female characters for me are way more compelling and realised as people, and my favourite is Karen McClusky and Edie, they are both wise cracking, cynical, funny as heck, straight talking and no ridiculous weeping and messy emotional flouncing. I think the best actor though is Felicity Huffman, Lynette, shes very subtle and when she feels an emotion, you really feel it because its not overdone, like when she cried over that possum, and her feelings about being pregnant, shes a very fine actor, flawed yes, like the incident before the tornado with Iras cat, that was well off, but its her performance Im talking about. The woman I like least is Katherine, I want to like her, because shes attractive and a great cook, but her weird smiles and mannerisms just are off for me.

Also the girls that rented the room from Gabby and Carlos, she didn't die in a tornado... She broke into Catherine's house while Kathryn was being held hostage buy her ex-husband play psychopath, and he shot her and was going to use her as an excuse for how Catherine got killed after he killed her... The other names you got wrong or so many I have made a list and I will send another comment once I get to the end of your video and have compiled the entire list... If you're going to binge watch a show and then make a big hour and a half video about the characters of the show you should probably know the story lines and the characters names.

He's not so much a bad guy as he is a terrible husband. He's a nice guy genuinely pretty funny and on paper a good guy. But oh my god i cannot stand men who weponize incompetence, the way he literally does not respect Lynette's need for her career and definitely just treats her as an incubator for his kids in the earlier seasons, he is constantly so emasculated and threatened by her talent which is just so annoying. He kept Kayla and Norah a secret from Lynette and then blamed her for his kid being out of control and never actually set a boundary with his child! Then it came out that he slept with Renee (Lynette's college bff) and never told her !!! The whole Jane situation was also awful. Oh and i forgot to mention the whole mid life crisis bc oh my god he was being so selfish and just seemed like he didn't really care for his family and just cared about getting his way.
He also always made Lynette look like the bad parent and never stood up for her even in front of their own kids , constantly undermining her.

I’ve always saw Tom as the female version of Susan. They’re both have quirky and immature personalities but they both lack major self awareness and always find ways to blame others for their faults rather than taking personal responsibility and learn from their mistakes. Both of them are probably my least favorite main characters on the show.

Tom confuses me because he always knew that Lynette didnt want more kids. Multiple times she begged not to get pregnant again. I’ve been pregnant twice and i think it’s disgusting how Tom invalidates how awful pregnancy is for Lynette. Doesnt matter how many times you get pregnant IT IS DIFFERENT EVERY TIME. You really resent your partner if they abandon you when you have kids. I think that Lynettes last baby was her last straw. She became more bitchy because Lynette gave up her entire life for Tom, to have his kdids. Yet he has 7 midlife crises, and never lets Lynette help him FROM THE GET-GO. Had he honestly involved Lynette at first, most of the issues would’ve gone away very fast. But Tom would not stop being emmasucalted by Lynette. Despite Tom doing the exact same thing to her by making her a Baby Machine and then LEAVES HER after the years of bullshit. Like yeah, Lynette was controlling. But honestly? That was the worst thing she was. Yes, she almost got involved with Rick during the restaurant time, BUT Tom treated Lynette like she ruined the restaurateur opening despite Tom failing himself, and only letting Lynette help him when he was beyond fucked. Tom even refused to get a vasectomy in case he remarried after Lynette died. Imagine. Being sick every single day for 9 months, it is traumatic. I will never ever get over my horrible 2nd pregnancy experience. I would not stay with a man who would keep his ability to have kids knowing that i want to unalive myself from how traumatic pregnancy can be. JUST IN CASE HE REMARRIES. No Fuchk you. Marriage is supposed to be forever and that is weird he wouldnt do something to help you or keep you safe.

A character I wish would have been used more was Eli Scruggs. He was in that one episode and obviously dies in it but he was just such a sweet guy and was actually quite an important character (without him Gabby probably wouldn’t have been part of the inner circle, Bree wouldn’t have finished the cookbook, etc.) It would have been nice to have him appear in more episodes through flashbacks.
Its NUTS that we only got the one episode when he was important to All of them!
And tbh the only decent man in the neighbourhood, he was thoughtful, kind, mellow, no drama, and straight forward.
Gabby was entertaining but so frustrating. Susan was dumb as a bag of rocks. Tom scavo was such a total man baby with severe anger issues. I really loved Bree’s character progression as well as the sweet relationship that developed with Carlos and Gabby. McKlusky was fabulous from start to finish, just a gem. She was funny, so smart, and really selfless.
Oh that's actually such a great point about Parker. The pre time jump Parker was actually one of my favorite kids. He was a great character. And then the post time jump Parker was completely forgettable and mostly ignored. The last season I kept forgetting he was one of the Scavo children until he made a rare appearance.
Agree. I think they focused too much on the twins in seasons 5 and 6, and on Penny in season 8. Parker had a big screen time in seasons 2 and 3, and completely forgotten after that.
I'm not sure about it, but il also may be due to the actors playing the kids not being as available as the adult ones regarding filming and shooting schedule.

Absolutely! Mike doesn't have a real identity. He always has to be attached to someone or something for him to work: Noah, Susan, Eddie, MJ, etc. The rest of the husbands had something Mike always lacked.

Didn’t care less and always ignored it when it aired on TV back in the day, but boy am I glad to have finally gave it a go after 20 years because it is one of the greatest series.
I agree with everything in this, except putting Tom Scavo over Carlos Solis. For me, Tom is definitely under the "shut i bitch" category because he really is a bitch. I HATE how he is so childish. He always puts his family at risk to pursue his own little quirky interests, such as him quitting his job and starting collage even though the family already have problems with their economy. Every single time Tom makes these mistakes, Lynette always questions them, which is fair because they are so irrational and stupid, which just leads to them fighting and him calling her controlling and rude, and I find Tom doing this SO SO SO disrespectful due to him being well aware of Lynettes childhood trauma regarding her mom being abusive towards her and her sisters which has led to her acting controlling. Not to mention that he did not even care that Lynette did not want a single child, but she still had four kids and he always wanted more kids and did not really give her credit for being a great mom until she called him out. I think there is a scene in one of the first episodes of season one when Tom comes home from work and Tom tells Lynette "let's risk it" in bed, once again ignoring the fact that Lynette does not want to get pregnant. He also ALWAYS lied to Lynette, like about Carla. He is just so selfish, childish and rude. Every time he opens his mouth to yell at Lynette I wish I literally could reach through the screen and slap him, because there were few moments Lynette deserved the energy Tom gave her, when she always showed him and her family so much love (in her own way). Did not enjoy his character for a second and one of the reasons Lynette is one of my favorite housewives (next to Edie and Bree) is because I have soooo much respect for her for putting up with that little stinking bitch Tom Scavo. I am so sorry, but I really hated his character: OUUFFF AND THE SCENE WHERE HE CALLED LYNETTE A BITCH DO NOT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THAT. I think DH tried to create a kind of Phil Dunphy and Claire Dunphy from Modern Family relationship between Lynette and Tom, which they did by making Lynette the strict and controlling parent and Tom the chill one, but Tom is faaar away from being the superb dad and husband that Phil succeeds to remain during every single episode of Modern Family.
Anyway, Carlos is so sweet: Rude in the beginning, yes, but it is his character development that makes him one of the greatest and sweetest characters in the whole show. He is just so wholesome when he is blind and works as a
masseur, I just loved that beard on him and I loved how he reacted when he saw Juanita and Celia for the first time - just the sweetest man on Wisteria Lane if you ask me.

I agree with everything you said! As the show progressed Tom turned into this big man baby that Lynette had to care for and Carlos grew into a GOOD man. He was so arrogant in the beginning but he transformed himself and family dynamic. And regardless of everything I think he truly loved Gabi. Their character develop is so good tho, kudos to the writers/actors.
Tom is my least favorite character out of all the husbands on the show. He’s immature, irresponsible, doesn’t take personal responsibility for his actions, and is heavily dependent on Lynette to take care of him and their 5 children but hates feeling “emasculated” by her. He just exudes a lot of bets made energy. Carlos is my favorite out of all the husband characters because he is everything that Tom is not! Carlos is definitely more masculine or alpha but to the point where he has complete dominance over his wife Gabby. He’s a really good husband to Gabby (after they got remarried) and he knows whenever Gabby is feeling unhappy and always says the right things to cheer her up. Carlos is also way more of a hands on father when raising his kids, more than Tom, more than all of the husbands on the show. Finally, he’s hard worker and a great provider who doesn’t run to Gabby every time he fails, unlike Tom!

I hated Susan & Mike, 2 cringe characters, when Mike did anything wrong it was considered ok like wtf. Him Dying was the best thing his role did. Susan was such an annoying character, awful mom & person. Worst thing was that she wasn't self aware. I love a good villain or someone who is aware they have flaws, but Susan considered herself a saint & always played victim while being awful really pissed me off

It's because the show was airing on ABC, which is more of a family channel featuring family values. And ABC at the time was already part of the Disney business group so they were sort of tied regarding issues such as abortion. But I get your point.

Fun facts! The actor who played Dave is devoutly religious and would not do any kissing scenes or scenes where Edie wasn't properly covered up. The actress who played Betty is Alphie Woodard and she is one of the most highly acclaimed actresses in history. Andrea who plays Angie only agreed to one season because she was a New Yorker and didn't like LA. She went on to star in The Sopranos and she was a perfect fit for that show.

It does have its flaws as you mentionned like the slut shaming, racial stereotypes, creepy underage relationships and all that.. yikes.
But it is just so well written, the characters are so well fleshed out, and it just flows naturally from season to season and literally NEVER. GETS. BORING, which is crazy considering there are 8 seasons with maybe like 20+ 40min long episodes per season? Like ?? No show will ever top this.

In hindsight I really liked the Applewhites, Betty was an absolute badass and Caleb was so sweet, and Matthew made for a surprisingly good villain, really the big issue with their mystery was the terrible pacing, which is why I think the Bolens fared better since their mystery was better planned out and the strangler mystery picked up the slack whenever the Bolens were not in the spotlight.

This show is one of the best shows I’ve watched. The characters are so complex, they have so many flaws, which makes the show seem so real. Even the main characters make you hate them sometimes. Bree is such an amazing character I loved her from the pilot, and Rex really did her dirty! Later on they show Bree’s mother talk about the “mask” and she tried to open up to her and he tells her she’s being stupid for saying how she feels. So why would she be vulnerable in front of him when he’s complaining about her saying he’s living in a detergent commercial. Andrew was one of my favorites as well with his one liners, and I loved when he and Bree were working together and getting along and they did him dirty in the end of the show! Susan and Lynette were very up and down for me, I rooted for them but I didn’t really like their characters. I will say Lynette pretty much tried to do the right thing, but she was put into some very compromising situations. Tom put her through hell acting like a whiney little man child, and then dumps her as soon as he starts making money! Then he gaslights her into thinking she’s a bad person. She’s harsh, blunt, and speaks her mind..but he knew that going into their marriage! The whole Jane thing and Nora storyline was sickening. But also Lynette seems like she’s never happy, she’s never content with any decision she makes. When I started watching the show I was realizing that the characters are pretty much my pretty much my parents age in the time it was filmed and airing on tv, which is when I was a teenager (early 2000s) and now watching it at the age I am now, makes me relate with the characters in a strange way because I’m married with children but they remind me of how I grew up. I know total mindfuck! Haha. I will say though, how they spoke about issues like body weight and that stuff is accurate to how my parents and my friends parents spoke to us when we were kids. It didn’t age well, but nonetheless accurate. Such a good show with an amazing cast and now I see why it was so popular back in the day!

Tbh I’m not a fan of the double moral with putting Gabrielle in the top when she’s a full on groomer. Like even when everyone’s aware she’s a terrible being and there’s no secret about it, not like with what they tried with Ezra. But it’s still like okay, owning it, doesn’t make it better. It’s like with Jenna being called an icon. It’s weird, bc it’s like yes they are hilarious in other scenes but things like this tarnish them fundamentally but ppl ignore it as if she doesn’t belong to all the groomer,predator men below. Idk it’s just rubs me the wrong, why are they doing this to these characters that are otherwise so iconic!!
I think Gabby gets away with all of her bad behaviors on the show by fans is because she’s both beautiful and funny. Society tends to overlook bad behavior from attractive people and people tend to be more forgiving towards other people that can make them laugh. Despite all of her flaws, Gabby is still one of my favorite characters in the show. I admit, I’m also part of the problem, in regards to legitimizing unfair double standards with my personal biases! 🤷♂️
Bree is my favorite as well. I love the fact that she has all the ingredients to be someone that people cannot get behind with our viewpoints beliefs, and things of that nature but yet she is still majority of people‘s favorite character. They thought they ate with Susan and thought that was gonna be people’s fave, but Marcia said hold my drink… because she devoured that character. I just wish she got more accolades for it.

I loved your character analysis of Desperate Housewives. Now a few corrections. The person you called Rob that almost had an affair with Lynette in season 3 is actually Rick. Ellie, the drug dealer that stayed with Carlos and Gabby was shot and killed by Wayne Davis the abusive cop husband of Katherine Mayfair The woman that died in the tornado episode was Sylvia the mistress Adam slept with in Chicago causing the Mayfair family to move back to Wisteria Lane. I wasn't too fond of the Applewhite family either especially since they had Mathew a 19 year old "dating" Danielle who was not even 17 yet but that climatic scene where Bree was willing to die for her daughter was epic. The Bolen family was so much more likable than the Applewhites. Speaking of the Bolens, I also loved the dynamic between Angie Bolen and Danny. especially when you see Angie going full mama bear in order to protect Danny. She pretty put Susan in her place.. It was so sad when Danny overdosed because he was lonely and depressed and being rejected by Julie didn't help matters at all. The mother son dynamic between Angie and Danny was a much more healthy relationship than Susan and Julie here's why I say this. Towards the end of season 6 when the Bolen family had to separate, Angie make it a point to say that she and Nick had to stop being selfish and let their son Danny live his own life whether if it's with Ana or not. Basically they selflessly gave up their son Danny for his freedom to live his life without being a fugitive and it was such a heartfelt goodbye. SECRETLY I was hoping that Danny and Dylan Mayfair would get together because they both shared a similar bond of being in a family keeping secrets. I think Dylan and Danny would have been a much better pair than with Ana. Susan on the other has been nothing but selfish towards Julie her whole entire childhood and Julie had every right to call her out on it. I disagree about Gloria. I LOVED Gloria because she was evil to the bone the part that gets me is she holds Orson responsible for her husband's death when she's the one that did and than forces him to hide Moniques body after she killed her while holding that her husband's death on Orson. Orson I think is a psychopath. Orson did worse to Bree more than Chuck and George put together. He stalked her for months even during her brief relationship with Keith, blackmailed her, murdered Chuck and than used her darkest moments against her such as sending her the blackmail letter with the exact words like Mary Alice that nearly spiraled her out of control to the point of her almost committing suicide. Lastly, Bree was such an iconic character. I think she changed the most out of all the other housewives. Its funny how the series started out with Bree being so robotic and prim proper tight housewife but after season 3 she overtime really started to losen up. Even when the series started it seemed that Susan was the leader the pack, the main lead of the group but overtime especially the final season Bree was the one that took the lead. One last thought I felt the final two seasons were a way of tying up lose ends from seasons 1 and 2 because the creator Marc Cherry knew he wanted to end the series. Im glad they got to end the series while it was still good and Marc got to end it the way he wanted.

I also just finished the series (two days ago actually), so I’m excited to watch this, but I can already tell based on where u put gabby and Lynette that we feel vastly different about the main four girls 😂 none of them make it past “I’m not crazy…” but Bree BARELY
I'm on season 6 and still back and forth with what characters I like n dislike..all 4 maim characters have @bused a child at some point...lynette slapping her step daughter, bree slapping her son, Susan almost crushing a kid under a car and gabby with the literally m0lestation of a 16 yo...so far it's probs edie...she never really did anything super bad but she was always treated like dirt

I feel like the Applewhites also had the air of criminalality to them. Not their appearance but more so their behavior. They were very dodgy and off. The actors were really good. And Matthew really was a monster and he had to pretend to be someone else. His mother was emotionally incestual towards him, not ina sexual way, but emotionally and mentally. She had a strong grip on him, because she thought he was the “good” son, so to speak, until it was revealed who he truly was. A criminal who also lied to his mother and betrayed his brothers innocence. Made his mentally immature brother believe women liked him, and to ignore obvious signs of dislike. That is a betrayal of a new order.

me i love love love gabby and bree. my favorites !! after them edie and i also like susan she is quirky and cute, yes sometimes toxic but all of the people in this show are. so i dont get all the hate ! me i really didn’t like mike !like he was in serious debt, drug addict, previous convict etc. like people romantizise him way too much ! also i dont like lynette. she went through the most and i symphatise with her but just found her so so annoying ! and tom omg he is at the bottom.

All the male characters rankle me a little in some way, but at the top of my rankle list has to be Carlos, that funny smile he does, siding with his rude and spoilt kids against Gabi, siding with anyone except Gabi, a thin veneer of machismo and likes to be seen helping people, but he should be helping his own family and not just as a provider, Im talking about instilling courtesy and honesty, his furtive financial dealings, and anger issues, and hes abusive to Gabi. He positions himself as good and a changed man but is he really?
I know shes no angel but he really pees me off.
And I wont get started about petulant man child Tom and his endless selfish hobbies that he makes his whole personality about, or creepy, slimy, deceitful Orson, I think his issues may partially stem from being closeted though.
Lee is really annoying, hes over blunt and rude and enjoys upsetting people and causing drama.
Creepy George, unappreciative Rex, deranged creepaholic David Dash, with his Aquarianesque disturbing facial countenance, boring wooden Mike, all of Susans exes, especially Ian, and the teenage Scavo twins.
Obviously they are all eminently watchable for their character deficits, thats the whole point, but it would be nice to see an actual decent, strong, kind, smart and non threatened male character, I guess Andrew when he grew up and wasnt a teenage nightmare was the best male on it, he has Brees back and seems grounded and sensible.
The female characters for me are way more compelling and realised as people, and my favourite is Karen McClusky and Edie, they are both wise cracking, cynical, funny as heck, straight talking and no ridiculous weeping and messy emotional flouncing.
I think the best actor though is Felicity Huffman, Lynette, shes very subtle and when she feels an emotion, you really feel it because its not overdone, like when she cried over that possum, and her feelings about being pregnant, shes a very fine actor, flawed yes, like the incident before the tornado with Iras cat, that was well off, but its her performance Im talking about.
The woman I like least is Katherine, I want to like her, because shes attractive and a great cook, but her weird smiles and mannerisms just are off for me.

Honestly I tried watching this but you had so many people's names wrong. If you called Rick, Rob one more time I was going to throw my phone. Also the girls that rented the room from Gabby and Carlos, she didn't die in a tornado... She broke into Catherine's house while Kathryn was being held hostage buy her ex-husband play psychopath, and he shot her and was going to use her as an excuse for how Catherine got killed after he killed her... The other names you got wrong or so many I have made a list and I will send another comment once I get to the end of your video and have compiled the entire list... If you're going to binge watch a show and then make a big hour and a half video about the characters of the show you should probably know the story lines and the characters names.
