Not having a BFA in Fashion Design will not be a hurdle for you. I have a BFA in Fashion Illustration and morphed quickly into Graphic Design then to UX Design and have been working for 30 years. As someone who has been in the "creative field" for that long, the #1 factor is your portfolio, I have worked with many self-taught designers who have no formal education, and these are high-level companies and positions. Your portfolio is fantastic, your fabric choices and finishing are exquisite. The only hurdle is not wanting to be in LA. So don't let your lack of formal training stop you.

@@BellaMaesDesigns Wow. Quite an encouraging word & good advice from someone inside the creative end of industry!
In life, I find there are often pioneers & settlers. Some ppl happily go out & conquer new worlds. Some of us dig our heels & commit to growing in place. I respect strong roots. Crazy LA has always been my home. Never wanted to stray far from parents. (I cherish every moment I had w/them both too.) If someone ever said I had to move out of SoCal to achieve something, I simply adjusted my dreams🏡.
With social media & online platforms, you can share your wares & talents with the whole world. As you continue to hone your craft, fine tune your message & work to build your audience -- your sphere of influence will naturally widen.
An algorithm brought you to my attention. Your enthusiasm & excellence for period & film costuming as well as your positive attitude has quite won me over. Original content will keep me & others coming back.
If you coordinate a creative challenge w/other popular Makers & Artisans in your category, that will also stimulate their subscribers to check out your channel.
All kinds of doors open for high profile influencers. The more traffic you get, the more your commissions & other opportunities will grow. Can't promise you a career in film via this route, but that doesn't mean you cannot have a rich & fulfilling life doing what you love. Your faith & forward momentum will pave the way. God Bless You💟

I agree. I was a professional costumer for over 25 years. No one looked at my degrees, i got my jobs from word of mouth long before the internet existed. Opera and theater was where I worked.
You are talented and focused. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise
Your advantage is that you live in the right time and can get the exposure people my age could never have dreamed of. And your funding. You have excellent funding. Not in a million years could I dream of having a work space or equipment that you have while trying to pursue a career in costuming. not to mention the access to materials the internet has provided.
You have a lovely manner. I enjoy your videos very much.

Congratulations on having a successful business at such a young age! As a teenager, I was making my own clothes, but it never occurred to me to sew for others. I’m 75 now spent most of my adult life as a theatrical costume designer and I’ve learned from you. You are very talented. Thank you! Designing for theater is a really great way to get into the industry. I worked in community theater ( not much money but great experience) and did some sewing for films ( great money, but not a lot of fun!) Good luck with whatever you end up doing.

I'm a little late to this but awww I totally get it - also a homeschooled started-young sewer here who wanted to be a costume designer but I live in Ohio, had unsupportive parents, and was naturally too practical to move to NYC or LA on my own. So I became an ICU nurse and spend my freetime learning to drape and currently sewing an 1890's pink petticoat working up the courage to attempt the same era corset. Keep doing what you do! It's amazing and encouraging to me. :)

I’m delighted to see you were homeschooled. After dealing w a terrible teacher in my home town, a woman with major issues who didn’t like little boys & abused our younger son, I knew I’d never place our boys in Public school THERE, again.
We actually moved home and I began schooling them - it was grand.
The local principal behaved poorly, after all, there was money on the line! However, they did quite well.
With the decline of education, I would not place my children in PS, ever. It’s quite different than it was when I was a child, but was clearly going down by my last year of HS. I was bored stiff, losing my love of learning, for a time.
I wish you well in your business & RUclips, as well.

Also, you show a lot of poise & self confidence as well as sociability than any home schooled kids in my experience of knowing, maybe a lot of that comes with a huge close knit family? You are very talented & it's just my opinion but if you keep a running portfolio that could be seen at any point of being requested, I firmly believe you will go just as far or further than those with a degree. You are that amazingly talented! (I'm seeing this in Dec of 2022 so besides being older your following of subscribers has grown exponentially!)

woo hoo! homeschool squad! It's really great to hear you say to just do it. I had heard of you before but as I am attempting to make a Cinderella work dress I found your Ella work dress costume study and it has helped tremendously! I would love to see you make this dress. I am not making an exact replica as I am utilizing the fabric available in my house and do not own a corset but the general silhouette and color is the same. I am almost done with it, although the sleeves are giving me trouble, and hope to have it done by Easter. This is my first costume/garment I have ever made and I am in my upper teens. I've been filming part of it and might post a video. I can see how people might degrade your work just because you are young or don't have a professional degree but your amazing work speaks for itself! Thank you so much for being an inspiration.

Don't look at it as a failure, instead, look at it as a new way not to do something! ;) Also, sometimes "good enough" is actually good enough. It took me over 40 years to realize that perfection will never happen, and that's ok. Trying to achieve perfection is only added pressure on yourself that will eventually eat away at you and kill the enjoyment out of something you love now. Keep sewing, keep learning, take breaks from time to time and hang on to the love of sewing. 💕

I hope this doesn't sound too maternal - but YOU GO GIRL!!!!!!! I am the mother of 3 young adult girls 21-30 (and a young man) I have always encouraged them to pursue passions- at EVERY AGE!!!!! What is age anyway? I've encouraged them that some of the worlds greatest conqueror's were young. So I was so tickled to find out your age. Imagine the places you'll be at 30...40...or in your 50's like me!!! I started sewing at 10 and made my own wardrobes at 12. It was fun and ageless. So keep it up, you are fun to watch as I sew...18th & 19th century clothes- and yes my everyday wardrobe still- except jeans, not going there! Keep conquering this niche and encouraging every age to sew. Now, I'm off my "Mom soap box" . Well done Bella...well done Bella's Mom!

I am probably closer in age to your Mom. I learned to sew as a child. I started making clothes as a teenager. I made all my own prom dresses, etc. I have made several wedding dresses & other more formal things. Now I make machine quilts & the occasional pieces of clothing that I want to wear. I just made my college senior daughter a heavy black velvet (old material & very good quality) cape with plaid lining. I sew for fun now when I'm not working. I also live about 3 hours from you in Arkansas also.

I do hope your pursue your career goals. You are so talented! Since you've made the Cinderella ball gown, have you considered going to work at Disney in Orlando to possibly learn more about the industry and then moving on to other things?
My Mom had a passion for sewing. I think she could have sewn from sun up to sun down. She would take me and my sister to the fabric store every Saturday (much to our dismay) and spend hours looking at fabric and patterns. All our clothes were home made and she did a fabulous job being self taught. She also made our prom and wedding dresses.
My sister nor I had any interest in sewing anything. I told her as a teenage, all that stuff just didn't make sense to me and she would say that anybody that could do the mathematics I was doing shouldn't have a problem sewing. I guess it wasn't in my blood. I was happier spending hours in the bookstores and working with numbers. I ended up in Finance.

I knew that you were the same age as my middle son or close to it but yes he was born in August 2000 so I was right. I have always thought that age doesn't matter its ambition and gusto and you have both in spades. Maybe it's the kids from that year caz he also has always been able to follow through and make money from his ventures. So smart and talented. Your strength and get go is amazing and you are older than your actual years.

Loved getting to know you more! I was hugely into sewing when I was in middle and high school but because of school hours I really could only sew once a week, then through university I had no time... So now at 27 I'm back at sewing and finally getting into costuming :D
Gosh if I ever get married I would consider getting a cinderella replica gown. So delicious.

So many homeschooled people! How wonderful. There don't seem to be many homeschooled children here in UK but that may be because we just don't hear from them. I believe you have to jump through so many hoops to be able to homeschool your child here. Anyway, congratulaions on all your achievements at such a young age. Where did the money come from for all that fabric you had to buy fot the costumes you made? When I was 13 there was no way my parents could have given me the then equivelant amount for fabric. I did sew but was only able to use fabric from old dresses I had bought for threpence at jumble sales!! The joy when I had my first wage packet (Three Pounds Seventeen and six which is about £3.87 now.) and was able to save up for some fabric to sew with!

I make primarily stage and film costumes, and am entirely self-and-mentor-taught. I definitely live in a “filmmaking desert”, and just travel or create and ship costumes when it comes to film wardrobe. Not a huge deal, and SO worth it!! 🎬
(I’ll message you a great place to start getting into some film if you like, without having to invest insane amounts of time.)

Yes, that's what I thought too❣ Bella's mastery & maturity had me wavering, but her sweet & unworldly nature steered me in that direction.💡Now, that I learned she was 👩‍🏫 homeschooled it all makes sense. I have known a lot of bright ppl who flourished in independent study & went on to pursue interesting & varied careers.
🎓College can lend more authority to your professional standing & sometimes open more doors, but it is no guarantee. Luckily, it is still possible to find success in some fields w/o a degree. Having good teachers, mentors & a teachable spirit can give someone a solid start in life.
✂️Lovely to know how Bella was encouraged to find her passion & strengthen her skill set along the way. Impressive that she managed to learn about pricing & billing, marketing & promotion in addition to her actual craft. At the same time, she's even on her way to become a multi-media specialist. All that can be tricky for new entrepreneurs & artisans.
🎊It's wonderful that Bella's now sharing her knowledge & experiences in return. Sounds like there is an audience ready to be charmed as well as absorb what they can from her✌.
⏰ When you're on either side of the career spectrum, it is wise to sidestep the subject of age (& dates that give it away). Nobody wants to be unfairly characterized or underestimated bcos of that number.😉

The hardest part of starting is deciding not to worry about the expended resources, to reflect that even $50 fabric is cheaper than a college degree, & that the degree would consume nearly the same amount of resources anyway. Also SQUIRREL!!!!!

Natalie and Tara have a youtube channel trying different things, but they are also film makers! There's a TON of small film festivals all around the country that you could make some awesome contacts by attending.

Yes, I have thought about this before. But most independent films don't have much of a budget and since this isn't a goal I currently have, I can't justify the "free" work. This may be something I consider if I ever choose to go more in that direction of costume design! Thanks for sharing!

I hid my age for a while online because as a woman you get judged on your age. Even though i look young, im actually nearly 46. But because i look about 25-30 I didn't want make people online feel like they are talking to their mother or get treated like someone who is too old, its so silly..
10 kids! Your poor mother. I chose not to have kids, im not a fan. My partner didn’t want kids either so that was very handy he didn't. My brother didn’t have kids either. So my parents got no grandchildren. They have a dog!
My sewing skills are woefully inadequate but i would love to replicate Sarahs dress from Labyrinth in the ballroom scene. I would just want it, so i can flounce about in it .. hehehe

I was 14 when I started being a costume designer, but they wouldn't let me claim the title because I was underage. Some people are ready at 14 and others are not ready until 30. Having an arbitrary adult age is not that helpful to many of us. Now I'm 60 and have the same problem like I'm supposed to sudden be incapable of anything!
