  • Coming into the last turn of snowboard cross' 2006 olympic debut, world champion Lindsey Jacobellis was set to win the event by a landslide. But then one split-second fall, charged by joy, changed everything.

      here's another story about snowboard cross once upon a time there was a self entitled athlete with a full Burton ride and X games cross promotion setting her up for a life of lucrative product endorsements under the guise of female empowerment, who decided to be crass and self-serving instead of humble and focused on her own athletic skills and it cost her not much at all in the end because a money maker is a money maker
      Not a very inspiring story as it turns out

    • @DarklordZagarna

      @@scottcollings7946 Absolute hogwash-- shows you know nothing about Olympic sport. Often the silver and bronze winners are as happy or happier than the gold medalist, especially if they weren't favored or struggled on their way there.
      I'll give a concrete example of this. In 2018 Anna Veith won silver in Women's Super-G; she was beaten for gold by the smallest possible margin (0.01 seconds) by Ester Ledecka, who everyone assumed was a snowboarder who was just moonlighting in skiing. Yet she still posted on her instagram that the silver was "as good as gold" to her.
      You might think that this was sour grapes or coping. You would be wrong. Anna already had a gold medal from 2014, plus two overall season titles in alpine skiing and numerous World Cup wins. But she had also had a horrible knee injury a few years prior and spent over a year in rehab. To be able to fight back from that all the way to second place in the world was an incredible accomplishment, she knew it, and she rightly felt hugely proud. It wasn't about who won on that particular day-- a bug landing on Ester's goggles could have changed the outcome. It was about the fight she showed to get there at all.

    It's a brutal reality about professional sports. You can have an amazing career with tons of accomplishments, but if you make one incredibly stupid mistake while in the spotlight, it becomes all you're remembered for.
    Lindsey Jacobellis and Bill Buckner are probably the best examples of this.

      Sven Kramer is another one. He is a long track speedskater who won the 5000 meters at 3 different Olympics (2010, 2014, 2018), has 22 individual World titles, and 10 European titles. He is remembered as one of the best speedskaters to ever walk the earth he still holds many records.
      Yet if you ask people who don't watch speedskating often all they know him for is the wrong lane change during the 10000 meters at the 2010 Olympics, which caused him to be disqualified and lose the gold medal. He had won the previous three world championships on the 10k and at the time the five fastest times ever skated were his.
      He would continue to win much more after that, including the 10000 meters at the 2016 and 2017 world championships, but he never managed to win the 10k at the Olympics.

    In softball and baseball, there’s a phenomenon called the yips. Essentially, it’s when trying to throw the ball, something the athlete has been doing for years, becomes next to impossible and they either spike it to the dirt or throw it too high. It’s 100% mental and once the yips start, all a player is thinking about is “don’t do it again.” Which then makes them do it again, and the cycle continues.
    This is the snowboarding equivalent to the yips. It sucks that one mistake cost her so much, and all of her falls were being caused by her brain constantly reminding her about the one that started it all and how she can’t do it again. As the saying goes, sports are only a small percentage physical, and a large percentage mental

    I feel like it should also be noted that Lindsey has won 31 world cups and 2 crystal globes (season championships, for those not up on winter-sport-ese). 31 world cup wins is a massive number, especially for an athlete who only competes in a single discipline (it's easiER, though still incredibly rare, to win that many races in alpine, ski jumping, or cross-country skiing, where you might start 25 events a season instead of 10), and the inherent randomness of snowboard cross makes it more impressive still.
    And she's still competing! You'd think that she would have taken the opportunity, after 2022, to essentially ride off into the sunset, but she just genuinely loves racing so much that that wasn't enough for her. She won bronze at 2023 Worlds and, although she didn't have a great season in 2024, closed out with a second place in the World Cup finals.
    Truly a unique athlete. It might well be said to her, to quote Tolkien:
    "There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."

    I'm so glad I'm not the only one who got emotional at the end over a sport I never cared about before. Great video, and what an incredible journey she went on. I can't imagine how awful those first few years were and how people just wouldn't let it go. She was practically a kid. People can be so heartless.
    I'm really glad things worked out for her in the end, not everyone can be as strong as her. And she opened the door to allowing athletes to know they still have value and the ability to win even after what most call their prime and basically demand they retire. Very inspiring.

      Arrogance feels the wrong word. She was a snowboarder, showboating is what we did back then, especially in the early days. Although I wasn't in her league, I've been an international athlete and I'm sure I would have done the same.

    So basically what I’m discovering is that humans love a tragic ending, cutting down tall poppies and revelling in it, punishing defeat when victory seems assured, forcing someone to dwell in failure - basically being cruel. We are such a wonderful species.

    • @johnfontenot8569
      @johnfontenot8569 3 месяца назад +1

      Meh… not all humans are that delusional. This isn’t tragic it’s just snowboard racing.

    • @dingdingdingdiiiiing
      @dingdingdingdiiiiing 3 месяца назад +1

      How is the ending tragic?
      It is inherent to our species to love overcoming adversity, we eventually discover that we fight against ourselves, or rather, a part that's within us. But if you win this fight, you lose. So you heal that part, integrate it, achieve balance and this manifests externally as a story of hardship, thorny journey, but with a happy ending. Gold in the end is a cherry on the cake, it's the perfect story. She achieved her goal at a much more ripe age. Also, let's not forget she's "The most decorated female snowboard cross athlete of all time, she dominated the sport for almost two decades as a five-time World Champion and ten-time X Games champion." So Olympics was just a pretty much an arbitrary goal. There's many athletes that dominate the World stage, but don't win Olympics and that doesn't mean they aren't the best...

      @@johnfontenot8569 its an olympic sport, the pressure of the whole nation is on you. You may think its just "snowboarding" but these events are very very notorious for being extremely harsh, because youre representing your nation. look up the south korean ice skater yuna kim.
