  • A flight from White Waltham (West London Aero Club) to the south coast of England, via Farnborough and back, in my cousin Peter's Cessna 172. Recorded cockpit noise for the first half of the video then recorded ATC direct into my camcorder for the second half.

Ah yes I remember seeing those splitters somewhere. Cheers for all your help - much appreciated! And keep posting these great videos!

    Great video!
The windscreen could really do with a wipe though, unless those were picked up from the prop wash!

@FlyingPodcast Possibly. That makes sense now. Thank you for the advice.

@air1jwilkins1212 The squelch should cut out everything that gets picked up by your headset mic until it gets to a certain level - ideally only when you speak into the mic. This facility helps cut out background noise in the cockpit.
It may be that you are hearing engine noise in the headset all of the time but your brain manages to ignore it.
Have a go and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks and yes those bugs need shifting.

Great video. How do you record the ATC on the camcorder? I'm guessing you use a wire which has a phone jack on one end and then a smaller audio jack to plug into the camcorder on the other end? I'm a PPL from Gloucestershire and film my flying sometimes, but have never known how to do this. It would be great to do it.
    Cheers

@FlyingPodcast I'll try adjusting the squelch next time. Thanks. But what's weird is that I don't hear the engine noise in my headset (in other words, I only hear voices through the headset).
Surely what is going into my headset is also the same as the stuff going into my camcorder?

    Hi,
I connect the audio with a Video Recorder Adapter -GA/Helicopter, from Aircraft Spruce. It goes into your planes headphone socket and splits the feed so that you can get the sound into your camcorders mic socket.
You can connect it to the rear passenger sockets - if you have any - to keep the cables out of the way.

@FlyingPodcast Hi again. I've gone and purchased the adaptor and I've been using it often. What's a bit annoying though is that you can still hear a lot of the engine noise over the comms. On your video at 1:40 you've got crystal clear comms with nil engine noise - this is what I'm trying to achieve.

@FlyingPodcast I wasn't able to find what I was looking for on Aircraft Spruce but I managed to find some elsewhere on the web. They were quoting around £50 but this seems ridiculous! How much did you pay?

@air1jwilkins1212 Try adjusting the squelch on your radio. You should be able to adjust the sound so that you only hear voice on the recording. I do actually quite like a bit of engine noise in the background as it adds to the feeling of flying. Sometimes the ATC on its own sounds a bit clinical I think. Let me know if this helps.

@air1jwilkins1212 I paid $30-ish plus P&P. Aircraft Spruce deliver quite quickly too. I've sent a separate message with web link to the product I bought.
