Puff Ball Symphony: Spore expressions of a Lycoperdon

  • My earliest memories of #mushrooms were #puffballs when I was about 5 years of age. After the summer rains in northern #Ohio, puffballs would come up in #abundance. I remember - gleefully - stomping upon them to see explosions of brown #spores sent skyward.
My twin brother - North - and I would compete for them. We soon discovered that we could throw them at one another whereupon they would explode upon impact with a brown puff!
One day our mother, upon seeing us pelt each other, came out of the house to warn that “if the spores of puffballs got into your brother’s eyes, he could be blinded.” (This is not true.) However, with this new information, I increased my volleys of puffballs - as he did to me. Puffballs gave us little boys hours of non-harmful fun.
Puffballs depend not only upon raindrops releasing their spores upon impact, but children too! Each puffball can release billions of spores.
First Nations - particularly in the Plains of North America - discovered that puffball spores were effective for wound healing, literally packing spores into cuts to prevent infection. Other indigenous peoples have also made this discovery.
The Blackfoot Native Americans considered them as ‘fallen stars’ and often portrayed them at the base of their teepees.
Scientists again confirmed what indigenous people empirically knew: puffballs contain strong antibiotical properties. Calvacin was identified as a novel antibiotic from another puffball species. Interesting this antibiotic is topically effective but toxic when this pharmaceutical is ingested. Other more whitish and typically larger puffballs are Calvatia and Bovistella, the extracts of which have been found to be inhibitory to staph bacteria in vitro.
Another example that science confirms mushroom ‘folklore’. Our ancestors knew mushrooms were medicinally important. Necessity is the mother of invention.
This “symphony” is orchestrated by Pamela Kryskow, MD. {Note: Dr. Pam is not rhythmically challenged: sporulation first, music added later.]
The species is close to Lycoperdon umbrinum, aka umber brown puffball.

Robert Caims, we are in medicine. We don’t see a placebo effect with any methods or means we use to help patients become well. If anything, patient self reports are like yours - they don’t know what did what to make them better! We also don’t see what is called malingering, meaning the patient reports no change when the issues are addressed properly with natural healing methods. Our explanation for why placebo effect and malingering do NOT play a role in natural medicine, (medicine that communicates to the body healing mechanisms, energy sources, means to heal) but do in unnatural medicine, is that these terms are often true only in unnatural medicine. In medicine that is not completely beneficial or not at all beneficial to healing, unnatural, the patient may feel “relief” from symptoms or feel no improvement at all. Thus, the researcher and/or practitioner cannot tell if it’s placebo or not and if the patient is reporting no benefit but is just malingering. These responses/unknowns are typical in unnatural medicine.
Good you improved with liquid mushrooms! Hooray!

Ever since i watched a few documentaries on Paul Stamets he inspired me to study Mycology, Plant Biology, and Psychedelics for the use of medicine and therapy and it's only been a year now and i've learnt a lot. Though i am still at the beginning of this new adventure, i, from the younger generation of people, one day hope to stand in the path of all these great people like Paul Stamets, Dennis McKenna, Graham Hancock and Michael Pollan. To help finish what they started alongside many others and continue fighting for psychedelic and medicinal mushrooms to be legalised and used as medicine. -- And for the health of the planet.
    Thanks Paul

Don't inhale them though, unless you want some of that Lycoperdonosis
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lycoperdonosis
"In 1976, a 4-year-old was reported developing the disease in Norway after purposely inhaling a large quantity of Lycoperdon spores to stop a nosebleed." Very curious solution, did it work?
" In one severe case, the individual inhaled enough spores so as to be able to blow them out of his mouth. He underwent bronchoscopy and then had to be on life support before recovering in about four weeks. In another instance, a teenager spent 18 days in a coma, had portions of his lung removed, and suffered severe liver damage." That's bad times ;)
    Very pretty though, thumbs up

Just some light entertaining info: the name Lycoperdon comes from the Greek Λυκόπερδον that means "Wolf Fart". My grandfather showed me my first lycoperdon on the hills of mountain Pelion when I was quite young, and he actually called it Fox Fart (αλεποπουρδο/alepopourdo). Had fun blasting them just like Paul did and had the same reaction to the plumes (don't breathe this stuff)!!!
