Rookie driver about to rent my first dump truck for several tons of soil. This was great because I also will need to dump gravel on this project. Great video. Now to find out if I can tailgate dirt.
I didn't realize it really took all of that to dump gravel. The different kinds, the links is set up for, the speed of the truck.... it is so interesting! But sir you are the absolute BEST to explain it all! Thanks for the commentary and video!
Lovely! No need for a machine to spread the pile. Very educational and atoundingly helpful as a great tool to maximize time and effort. Gratitude toyou sir! Very well done and documented.
Nice job, very well explained. I used to Spread with 20 Yard Mack Tandem back in the early 80s during my first real job. We had to spread sand on county dirt roads to prevent them from getting too slick. The problem with Pit dirt, especially when starting a New Put, was tree roots. Get a root hung in the tailgate while spreading and your trip could get real interesting, real fast. I can tell you've been in different situations spreading material and have learned how your truck reacts, you make a great teacher as well.
Todd , I am a rookie and I have pulled down some cable ... the night before the Superbowl ... Yes , no joke . I did make it out alive but not without some nasty name calling and a few rocks thrown at my old 72 Peterbilt . So , I am glad you brought this back to my attention because sometimes these little monsters (Wires) are out of the normal vision range until you start dumping and moving . So thanks again for the heads up . My Peterbilt was a rollover . A guy was dumping on a slight slope, and it was sticky material ... He kept raising it and in less than a second it was on it's side . Once it starts to roll , She's gone .
Tailgating gravel is becoming a deminishing skill. When I sold my home in Lake Charles Louisiana my driveway needed fresh limestone. I had 3 different dump truck drivers deliver the stone and not one of them knew what tailgating was, let alone was able to to it after I explained it to them. I had to spread the stone piles with my John Deere tractor and a box blade, it was all I had.
I have never even seen a dump truck here in Australia that has chains on the tailgate. Tailgating material properly is basically unknown. That’s fine for me - more work spreading the material, but it’s rough on the customer. I just love seeing that clean, even layer of material going down.
@@langdons2848 One other reason, imho, that dump truck drivers should learn this skill, is when they are delivering stone or shell at a wet area. A driver that knows how to tailgate can do it while backing and keep from getting bogged down.
When I started doing tippers 3yrs ago here in New Zealand (8-axle truck n pup combo), even though I was driving for a quarry that only did any spreading maybe 2 or 3x a year, I wasn't qualified until I could demonstrate competent spreading ability. I'm surprised it is such a unique skill...lucky me!
Excellent helpful video. I use to know an owner of a Ford 5 yd gas powered dump. He hauled masonry sand for a local supplier at 40 usd a load. I have read only negativw comments on the gas engine. Do you think the Ford 650 with a diesel would do well for an owner/operator hauling sand and gravel in the southwest? Thank you Sir.
This is the exact video I needed two weeks ago I was searching for this and had no luck. I had to learn on the fly n didn't do well. Always next time haha
I have a 500' driveway that I need to get rocked in order to get an amish built cabin delivered. Two questions. 1) I need to trench utilities that cross the driveway, 4' deep. I also need to pour concrete piers at the cabin site. I would like to trench before rock, but the ground is to soft to get a concrete truck in to pour piers. What order should I do this in? Not a fan of trenching through fresh rock. 2) I had a 12' wide driveway cut to the cabin site. How wide is the dump truck (tandem) capable of tailgating rock? I would like to have a 12' wide rock driveway 4-6" thick for now, putting fabric down, will add more rock next year. Will the driver have to make an extra pass to be 12' wide? Thank you
The trucks are typically 8 feet wide. The stone will come out about 9-10 feet wide depending on how fast they go. I’d at all possible get the utilities in before gravel. It is a bummer to dig through fresh rock but if it’s soft and concrete had to be done before trenching I would put down 4 inches of railroad ballast.
I've been trying to learn this. You can drive forward with the PTO in the on position while the bed is going up in first gear idling? I was always taught from the guy that taught me how to drive trucks that is not allowed it will immediately tear up the PTO.
How else are you supposed to operate the bed? Even dumping a pile, you can't dump your entire box without moving the truck forward. You were taught wrong. You can drive with the PTO engaged. All the PTO is doing is giving power to the pump. You won't tear it up or damage anything.
I drive a tandem for a landscape supply company, and I get asked to spread along driveways like this about 5 times a season, it's always a pain as I don't have the chains on my tailgate to do it in this way, and it's always lumpy, bare, or in piles as I go along, and that operation of the dump box is cancelled by holding the brake pedal also makes it a challenge with the auto shift transmission in my assigned truck. My only saving grace is that my dump box is separated into 3 compartments by two large gates, so I don't end up dropping it all at the head of the driveway, that and the customers understanding.
I had a driver deliver a load for me to a client’s site recently and had exactly the same experience, no chains on the tailgate, so I wasn’t going to blame him. Still, even an uneven spread saved me some time with the machine afterwards. Sometimes it *is* the tool that’s at fault.
So Todd, aside from the operations of the truck, what brand and/or feature(s) of a truck should be most important to a beginner? I'm looking at either a GMC C4500/5500/6500 (around year 2000) or an International Durastar 4300 around the same year. I want single axle and enough truck to pull a 20k lb machine (even though my excavator is only 13k lb I want room to grow).
2ridered2 the bigger the engine the happier you will be. International is a great company. GMC isn’t bad either. I would definitely get a manual transmission. It’s easier to creep around tight areas.
Did you pull a rope to release the tailgate? Or is there a switch on the cab? Also what about the F750 does it work the same way? Thanks for the video very informative.
chris reddick yep. The old truck has a release handle with a rope attached. The 750 has a switch in the cab that controls the air release on the tailgate
Not a bad job spreading man! But why no fabric under the stone to keep out the grass and such? Why stones and not surepac? We only do surepac with our truck. And I cannot get it to spread like that 😂
That's a thing of beauty! Very nice. Aside from operating the dump truck, I would love to see a video of your thoughts on what dump to pick for a newb in this line of work. You did that trailer video a few months ago, which was very helpful; we see the vio80 in action all the time and hear you talk about it; but me personally, would love to hear more about how to match a truck to a particular size excavator and trailer.

I’m a rookie driver and that was amazing to see. Appreciate the Video.
You are very welcome
I’m new to driving a dump truck and I had a customer ask me to spread. I wish I would’ve seen this video sooner. Thanks for explaining ! 🎉

Thank you for posting this! The guy i bought my truck from told me to do 10 links for 1 inch clean.... I dumped 14 tons in 25 feet lol
good common sense goes a long way. Great explanations.
Great video! What truck would you recommend to pull a 14 ft dump trailer 5tons of gravel at a time? Ram 3500 Dual wheel or f450?
Good block of instructions.
