She worked tirelessly as a prosecutor while still making time for her children. She took that job over one in corporate law at a cosmetics company where she would earn a lot more money and have a much less demanding workload. Spousal and child abuse cases were finally taken seriously partially due to her crusading tirelessly. She was appointed to the bench in 1982. She continued to be a dedicated jurist. By chance she was featured on 60 minutes around the time Judge Wapner retired from “The People’s Court.” The producers pursued her and the rest is history. I think the issue is that she never decreased the rent amount that she was charging those women who lived there. If they had to live in deplorable conditions, their rent should've been free. She expected "the ladies" to pay her while she refused to pay her own landlord, when the ladies were the ones who were truly suffering. So she made profit off of the women who had to live in deplorable conditions and then pocketed the rent money (minus the utility fix). In Judge Judy lingo, she was "made whole."

Right!!!!! my friend he runs a sober living house and yes he gets some money from the government but like her he charges the people living in his sober living house $400 but he keeps $200 for himself and then he’ll put $200 aside for when these people are ready to move out so let’s say one person is ready to move out And move into their own apartment and they’ve lived in my friends sober living house for six months my friend will literally give that person a lot of their money back and they’ll get $1200 because my friend wants them to have a leg up in life like get furniture for their new apartment or a bed or dressers or food if they haven’t been accepted for food stamps yet or if they want to pay an advance on their rent, they can do, so what is this woman doing to set these women up for success she is literally being a shitty landlord just like this guy she even admitted to Judge Judy that they were not good living conditions when she moved these 12 women into this house and more than likely this house is a three or four bedroom house so she’s cramming three or four women in each bedroom and just imagine 12 women living in a house if anything she should have six people living in the house at most where two people are sharing a room depending on the size of the room. If it’s a smaller room, then she should just put one person in that room and maybe they pay like 25 or $50 extra. But these poor women I agree with you there’s probably three or four of them in each room and they’re all on bunkbeds she’s literally taking advantage of these women that more than likely are just coming off of drugs or they just got out of jail or prison, which I get a lot of of them put themselves in that situation, but still it’s scummy and she’s literally scamming them. She’s no better than her own landlord.

You need a business license about $50, federal EIN, insurance, basic amenities such as furniture, bedding, beds, toiletries and kitchen appliances. You will not be just splitting the rent among the tenants. You do exactly what this woman did. You need to have money for emergencies, fixing appliances and other basic necessities. I think Judge Judy saw her as a hypocrite because she wants to sit there and complain about her landlord but yet she’s not the best landlord she’s literally cramming 12 women in a more than likely three or four bedroom house. I pray it’s a three or four bedroom house, because if it’s a one or two bedroom house, that’s really shitty of her but if it is a three or four bedroom house, she is literally cramming three or four women in each bedroom And charging them $400 a month usually when people rent a room to themselves they pay 400 or $600 a which I get these women have to get what they get because majority of them just get out of prison or jail, and they literally have nowhere else to go, but people like her are taking advantage of that. She even admitted to Judge Judy when she moved those 12 women in the house was not in good condition, and it still wasn’t in very good condition from the defendant said. I totally get she has to make a profit too, and she hast to make a living too but she’s literally making almost $5000 a month off of these women. Literally and sober housing programs usually only put two people to a room but these are actual sober living places and they charge them $200 a month because they have a roommate and they will literally put that money aside. Tell the person is ready to move out and then they give them that $200 a month that they paid and then it totals out to like $1200 or however long they have stayed there, so then it gives them an extra leg in the real world. What is she trying to do to set these women up for success? I guess she’s just doing it herself she’s not part of a program or an actual like facility but she could at least charge these women $200 a month if they’re going to share a bedroom with two or three other women and literally cramming 12 women in a house that’s not OK she should at most have like four or five women living in that house

I really hope it’s a three or four bedroom house so more than likely she’s cramming three or four women in each room that’s not OK. Literally people rent a whole room to themselves for four or $600 a month. She even admitted to Judge Judy that when she moved those 12 women in the house was not in good condition. And she was literally making almost $5000 a month off of these women. She is not a good landlord, either. I do agree the older gentleman he is a scummy landlord, too, but they both are and I think that’s why judge Judy throughout her counter claim.

I totally agree, because yes, her landlord is a scummy shitty person but also she’s no better literally making 12 women live in a house that is more than likely a three or four bedroom house and more than likely cramming three or four women in each bedroom and then living and sleeping on bunkbeds And charging $400 a month she is literally making almost $5000 a month. It’s so ridiculous if she’s going to be cramming three or four people in a bedroom she should be charging people maybe $200 a month she still making almost $3000 a month charging them $200 a month, I get she hast to make a living too but that’s just ridiculous and what is she doing to help these women except give them supposedly a place to live even though they’re getting crammed in a house and bedrooms like cattle my friend he runs his own sober, living house. He gets some funding from the government, but also he does charge the people $400 a month but he’ll keep $200 for himself to keep the place running but also he’ll set the other $200 aside for these people when they’re ready to move out so let’s say a person is ready to move out. They finally got their own apartment and they lived there for six months in my friends, sober living house. He will give them $1200 back to give them a leg up to buy furniture buy food if they haven’t been accepted for food stamps if they want to pay in advance on their rent to the landlord, they can if they need a bed or dresser, and sometimes, my friend even for a housewarming gift he will buy these people couch just to help them out also yeah it’s not an amazing couch but it’s better than nothing but at least he has sympathy and tries to help out his people

I didn't understand JJ's ruling at first but I think I get it now.... but she WAS still unnecessarily aggressive towards the defendant......
I think it was directed more towards the fact that the defendant had, for a few months, collected rent from each of the women even though she, herself, did not pay HER own rent to the owner, citing deplorable conditions. If the conditions were so deplorable that the defendant withheld rent, the women who were the ones actually living in those deplorable conditions, should have been able to withhold THEIR rent from HER. Even though she was not at full capacity because of the conditions, and lost clients, JJ felt her financial losses were balanced out by the financial gains during those specific months.

Unfortunately in certain states such as Indiana, if you make repairs on apartments or any rental, you are not entitled to your money back. Maybe Judge Judy knew that about that state. I agree she should have gotten her money back but unfortunately some states are more landlord friendly than they should be. My husband and I now have a rule that we will not put any money into a rental and leave it to the landlord we just keep messages of us letting them know what needs to be fixed and depending on if they fix it or not we can take them to court but moral of the story never put money into a rental?
