I've been using Rocky in lab environments to help teach people Linux basics and its... okay. I still miss CentOS. Great videos by the way! Really enjoying the content!
Fair point - and I cut out a long section explaining stable/testing/unstable, but while it was interesting to me, it sorta felt “in the weeds”. But you’re right, without the bit about the release channels, I’m misleading. Thanks for keeping me honest.
I didn't know that CentOS had been killed. That kinda sucks. Although, I haven't used a Redhat derivative in many years. That was before RH's IPO. I started on Slackware, moved to RH, then played around with a few others before settling on Gentoo for a few years. I finally ended up settling on Debian for servers and *buntu (actually, Xubuntu) for my laptops. Although I do have one Windows laptop (for the occasional gaming) and a macOS laptop, which I really like for it's portability.
It’s now “CentOS Stream”, but it’s not the same concept at all. I didn’t know about Rocky Linux until researching for this video. I hope it takes off. And I never liked Unity or Gnome3 - so I used Xubuntu for quite a while, but now really like Ubuntu MATE. It feels like Gnome 2, but not “old”.
Windows, turn on WSL, it's a great transition for learning on Windows. You can boot and use several different distros all with it connected to Windows. I run Kali Linux and Ubuntu. Mostly for cyber security aligned stuff and learning about servers. Arch and Mint are quite popular in the user space.

@@gabriel6312g Ha! Thanks. So far it's the most useful thing I've done with it. I do hope to start a bonfire with it someday, but I've had it for years now, and done nothing but occasionally blast flames into the air while acting a fool. :D
Love your OS explanations! I agree that it doesn't matter what is out there, use the proper tool for your use case. Similarly, devs comptemplating what languages they should learn, it doesn't natter as long as you understand the principles first, then choosing for a specific purpose,i.e., job or project.
Right?!? I don’t remember all the contents of this video, but with regard to languages - I use BASH and PHP most often, only because they’re tools I know! Are they the best fit? Heck no. But in the moment they’re the *correct* tool. :)
I don't understand why there are so many distrobutions. I have Ubuntu, CentOS Stream, and Fedora installed on Proxmox and they all feel almost exactly the same. When I heard reviews about different distros I was expecting a more significant difference. So far it seems like Linux is Linux except some use apt and some use yum. 🤷♂️🤔
Honestly, since they're all the Linux kernel underneath, they do have a LOT in common with each other. Also, most distros use SystemD these days, so even the startup scripts are fairly similar. The APT/RPM thing is pretty significant though, and I tend to struggle with RPM-based systems for some reason. (Although I have friends who are smarter than me who prefer RPMs)

debian is not rolling release (unless it's debian 'unstable'/sid)... Prime examples are Archlinux and gentoo

if you could just go ahead and walk us through each linux test id appreciate it -- i too am here from WGU their course for linux LPI is terrible
