  • Indian Ringneck Parrots have become extremely popular pet birds, mainly due to cute posts all over social media. But do they make a good pet for someone without any previous experience with birds?
In this video I will explain how I feel and why.
Thank you for all the likes, comments and subscribers ❤️
For those of new to my channel, welcome.
I love to make others smile and share what knowledge I have learned from owning birds to help other bird owners out.
The beautiful female Ringneck parrot in this video is Repete. You can see more of her on Instagram @shannoonatnoon

Thanks for posting this video and showing the reality of owning a bird... People don't understand that owning a bird is a commitment .. there were times we had to leave parties early because our irn would be alone at home... We had to handle a lot of furniture damage due to my birdie biting it off , cables damaged and constant dirtying of the house...not to mention they can be loud at times and had to escape to another room to attend a meeting ... Also my irn would become very nasty and bite everyone at home for no reason and other times he wanted to be with me all the time! Also they would fall sick weather changes or if diet is different... specially certain foods like garlic and avocado can kill them.If you are able to handle the above scenarios and still be able to love an irn.. then congratulations ,! Else start off by owning budgies... They don't need Ny attention

Thank you for sharing your experience with your IRN. People don’t realize that they can be difficult and it’s not just what you see on social media. I always tell someone to go on parrot forums or Facebook groups to see the real challenges others are going through.

First time I got bit was a very hard one. It was right after we got her a new "room" (we don't call it a cage, because it invokes the negative connotation of a cage being a punishment). In the transfer process of trying to break the habit of territorial behavior over her old cage, she got a good hit right on my fingers and held on tight. Thankfully, I kept my cool. She's a sweet, wonderful bird now, but I would definitely recommend doing your research or owning a smaller species before owning an IRN.

Oh I recall my first bite as well, it was from my rescue. Oh boy did she ever get me good, but I also didn’t react and I knew it wasn’t her fault. Thankfully Ricco doesn’t bite hard if he does, it’s just a playful bite lol.
I’m glad you were able to pass the stages of their behavioural issues, unfortunately many are usually given up for adoption during this time.
Thank you for commenting your experiences and I agree that a smaller bird is always better as a stater bird, at least I’m glad I went that route 😊

I'm so glad you made this. I'm seeing more and more new owners on FB groups buying them and the 2 questions they have is "when will they stop biting and when will they talk"? It's sad because I feel this is exactly what's happening & yes, what will happen to all of these birds when this "wears off" 🥺 my Rukus is my 1st bird , although I did tons of research I'm learning daily & love him more every minute but everything she says here IS true ! I can honestly say I love animals and any I own are with me til one of us go but it's a huge responsibility. One quick example is right now if I leave his room he screams and I mean screams if he can't be on my shoulder - imagine that every day all day 🤣 thanks Ricco and mom !

It’s hard not to fall in love with them because of how cute they are but they are a lot of work and as you mentioned go through periods of behavioural changes such as screaming and biting, unfortunately when owners can’t take it anymore it’s the birds who pay the price in the end because they are either rehomed or left to live out the rest of their life in a cage 😞.
Thank you for sharing your story and experience, I really appreciate it.

I've had my IRN for almost two years now and he still won't allow me to touch him. This is the fault of his first owner ignorantly purchasing him from the breeder before properly researching the breed. Very sad... for the bird. As he went through his adolescent bluffing period, he gave his first owner a very nasty bite. So, she threw him in the cage and never let him out nor interacted with him again... for months and months. Eventually, she smartened-up and returned him to the breeder. Thank god. The poor bird was such a basket case that the breeder then gave him to me... Free. As I said, the poor bird was so traumatized that it's been two years now and he still won't allow me to touch him. He may NEVER allow me to touch him, and that's okay with me. He trusts me and my Labrador Retriever, but gets incredibly anxious if strangers enter the house. He's a sweetheart. He's funny, smart, and very interactive. But, most of all... he's happy. PLEASE don't selfishly get an IRN, or any other parrot, without first doing your due diligence. This should not be a whimsical purchase. It's a 30+ year commitment. Take it seriously. 🙏

Aww thank you for rescuing him. It sounds like you are doing everything right, just give him time. He’s obviously been through a lot so be patient with him. Just continue spending time with him and using his favourite treats as a way to show him something positive from you, eventually he will start to realize you are not out to hurt him. It took me 1 year for Ricco to allow head scratches, so never give up.

because of social networks I bought one and the reality is totally different. They are very scandalous, they make a lot of noise, their screams can be heard up to 4 blocks, they are manipulative controllers, they want to play all day and if I ignore them they scream louder To bother . Every day I live with stress I never have peace. Every day I live with a headache with him, I can't even go to the bathroom alone because he cries horrible if he doesn't look at me near him. If I had known before that they are too stressful I would never have bought it.

So sorry to hear about how stressful it’s been. They can become extremely dependent on you. I try to give Ricco plenty of alone time so he doesn’t always need me, he will do his flock scream call but he’s not to bad left alone. Try to slowly leave him alone and give him things to play with or foraging toys and food, it’s helped me a great deal. Hang in there, hopefully he will get better as he gets older.

      @Riccothegreenpiedirn  Год назад +3

I always give Ricco all the time to express himself. They will always remain somewhat wild and I would never take that away from him, they are birds and will never be domesticated as a dog or cat. This video is to show that owning a ringneck parrot is not what it seems on social media and it may be difficult for someone without any experience. What you do see on social media is not the reality of owning one and those are just the cute side of owning one, unfortunately this side is rarely shown and owners are shocked when they do get one .
