Each to their own but I would suggest that unless shooting a reg comp most grounds are fibre only now. Hull comp X 21g are pretty much the softest and cheapest novice cartridge in my opinion Then moving onto things like the Hull superfast 27g and the Gamebore velocity+ which are both excellent, low recoil (in my opinion) and good value. If course the best way to reduce perceived recoil is to have a properly fitting gun and a consistent mount.
I am recoil sensitive and Hull X 21 gm are some of the softest cartridges out there. However for slightly better quality shot Amber 21gm are really good and still fairly soft. If you want to try a 28gm load then Hull Sporting 100 are good and also fairly soft shooting.
My instructor started me off on the Hull cartridge 28g Hvs branded for the ground and I haven’t changed from them since starting I feel they do the job for me
My favourite 21g cartridge that, never felt like I needed more when using it and if I use it in the semi-auto they're just silly , basically next to no recoil.
Recently got the litespeed, although they were a bit thumpy for me, could be due to having an older gun with no real recoil system. Eley Select are smooth and cheap enough for me
lyalvale super light 21g are a fantastic capable cartridge Hull comp x 21g also just as good i’m a big fan of 24g cartridges as they will hold there own even at range i use a lot of 24g 8s loaded up by hull for barbury shooting school
I did try fiocchi f black? Can't remember but they kicked alot and made a mess. We generally don't have 21 gram in Denmark. But a fine starter is eley 24, dirt cheep and soft, my favorite is white gold from Gamebore or NSI 28 gram Super Soft. I do have Gamebore dark storn, and yes they kick but no more den the Fiocchi I tried. I only use it for long range
Hull Comp X 21g Fibres are soft enough and break stuff for fibre only grounds. Express super light are soft. Eley select 21g plastics also good. Stepping up to 24g Evo Fibre are noticeably punchier than 21 but not too bad. I don’t shoot anything heavier, black gold 28 are thumpy as hell! All are easier in semi auto mind as long as it cycles ok.
Can remember 20+ years ago a FITASC champion etc Said to me "They all break em, some better than others!"...I shoot as many brands as I can, 21-24-26-27-28 gms some Fibres are brilliant too...You only get what you pay for!
I find Hull fibre wad 24g pro fibre kicks less than Evo sporting plastic 24g. This is based on 150+ shots for each of them using the same gun 694 ACS, so noticeable and consistent. But nowhere conclusive… just like to share
Sellior & Bellot super trap 28g 7s for me good price devastating kills ,the 24g are excellent to soft and lethal they do 7s & 9s 24 g & 6.5 / 7/8/9/ 28g. all plaswads .
Don't get hung up on what chokes to use. I use 3/8 in both barrels. I've not missed a close target or long one because of my chokes. It was down to me.
i use 1/4 + 1/2 in a browning 525ls, remember fix chokes used to be the norm. i was thinking abt changing to 1/2+1/2 or 3/8+3/8, but at my/our level i dont think it really matters, shoot what you have already got
Rio trap 24gr 12ga is fine. But skeet sucks... Eley blues nice but tt two better in my guns. Just something good and reasonable price. In Poland we have own factory named FAM Pionki. They are nice but better go on tt two ;)
Being environmentally friendly on the rock we only shoot 24 gram Eley VIP pro eco wad steel shot 7's, for OT and ABT. Definitely not punchy and an excellent cartridge. We've been using them for two years. Fail to see what all the fuss is about using steel as an alternative to lead...just saying.
I am surprised you say to use Plastic wad, as all the clay sites in my area, ( Lee on Solent, spitfire et al) only allow fibre wad.
Each to their own but I would suggest that unless shooting a reg comp most grounds are fibre only now.

Really appreciate this sort of content from the channel, I've recently applied for my certificate so any guides like this are very helpful
I would have expected you to mention Hull and also the fact that in a lot of areas like mine none of the shooting grounds now allow plastic wads
My instructor started me off on the Hull cartridge 28g Hvs branded for the ground and I haven’t changed from them since starting I feel they do the job for me
been shooting eley select 21g fibre yesterday at park lodge on the high tower very surprised at the results good breaks off the 42 meter tower
My favourite 21g cartridge that, never felt like I needed more when using it and if I use it in the semi-auto they're just silly , basically next to no recoil.
Really surprised you didn’t include the fiocchi litespeed, cheap, non punchy and 26 gram. Perfect in my opinion.
Was just about to comment for light speed we can’t get them where I’m from but when I went over they were fantastic carriage
Recently got the litespeed, although they were a bit thumpy for me, could be due to having an older gun with no real recoil system. Eley Select are smooth and cheap enough for me
Hi David,I prefer cartridges of 28 grams 12 g
I love the 21g plastic comp X
I used the crazy 8 24g but moved to white gold quad seal , I enjoy them and don’t recoil like other 28g cartridges
Hull comp x is the least recoiling cartridge I have used the 21 gram brakes clays great
lyalvale super light 21g are a fantastic capable cartridge Hull comp x 21g also just as good i’m a big fan of 24g cartridges as they will hold there own even at range i use a lot of 24g 8s loaded up by hull for barbury shooting school

At last, thank you, someone finally recommending 21gram. 👍
My go-to is the Fiocchi T2

Cheddite are a fantastic cartridge with very low recoil
Hull superfast 27 gram all round great cartridge covers all mentioned
Cheapest 21g fibre available at the time. Most modern guns have a decent recoil system to address that issue along with a good gun mount limo.
Can remember 20+ years ago a FITASC champion etc Said to me "They all break em, some better than others!"...I shoot as many brands as I can, 21-24-26-27-28 gms some Fibres are brilliant too...You only get what you pay for!

Most schools around my area are fiber only.
Fiocchi TT' one has to be the worst cartridge i have ever used, your better off with something like eley select's in my view.
Sellior & Bellot super trap 28g 7s for me good price devastating kills ,the 24g are excellent to soft and lethal they do 7s & 9s 24 g & 6.5 / 7/8/9/ 28g. all plaswads .
No Comp X?
What is the best chokes for a beginner to start with in clay pigeon shooting?
Don't get hung up on what chokes to use. I use 3/8 in both barrels. I've not missed a close target or long one because of my chokes. It was down to me.
If your a total beginner 1/4 + 1/4 or 1/4 + 1/2. But, as they say don't worry about it and it won't matter.
1/2 and 3/4 here
i use 1/4 + 1/2 in a browning 525ls, remember fix chokes used to be the norm. i was thinking abt changing to 1/2+1/2 or 3/8+3/8, but at my/our level i dont think it really matters, shoot what you have already got
Cylinder and IC. used for everything on clay sporting. 21g cartridge. If you are on the money the clay will break!
All way tt two 24gram 7.5 for skeet and trap and parcour ;)
Fblu and tt are very good even in 28g not thumps Olympic blues even softer.
Rio trap 24gr 12ga is fine. But skeet sucks...
Eley blues nice but tt two better in my guns.
Just something good and reasonable price.
In Poland we have own factory named FAM Pionki. They are nice but better go on tt two ;)
I do not know of a single ground near me that allows plastic.
Winchester x2 24 gr 7/ 28 gr 7 steelshot
Fiocchi f-steel 24 gr 7/ 28 gr 7
Gamebore super steel 24 gr 7
In belgium we can't use lead
Kent velocity.
Litespeeds
Using lightspees 26g fibre atm kill well they are a very dirty cartridge
Cheap fibre wad will outdo a cheap plastic wad
Cheap ones.

Recommending plastic wads, really? This isn't the 70's
