    John McEnroe is quite probably the most talented singles player of all time. If he had more natural power (or the game had mandated always playing with wooden rackets), he could very well have been the greatest singles player of all time.
    Having said that, I think there is no question that he is the greatest doubles player of all time.

    I have been an avid watcher (and hacker) of tennis since about the first year of open tennis in 1968. Like McEnroe, my hero was Rod Laver, but I admired most of the other Aussies as well for the determination, drive and sportsmanship they brought to the court. In that light, I found McEnroe, too often, to be a jerk, mostly on the court but sometimes off as well. Still, he is the only true tennis genius I have ever seen, and all the modern players are included in that statement as well.

      @@37valerio It's widely known that McEnroe preferred to play and play too much rather than train. In the most important tournaments he reached the final in both singles and doubles. Several defeats are attributable to this not sensible and prudent behavior. Many believe that he was worn out too soon both by the advent of fiber racquets which greatly increased the speed of exchanges and favored power more than technique so his exceptional, never seen, mastery and sensitivity of the wrist was no longer enough to attack furiously as he did with Borg and he began to be forced on the defensive but also for this presumptuous and unregulated attitude. It's also well known Billie Jean King's comment when she observed that "he did not pay the price". She meant that McEnroe had made him to the top without sacrificing himself with the hard and exhausting workouts of her and Connors.

    • @bleclef

      Not the strokes ? Do you play tennis ? Take another look...Mental strength ? Look how many tie breaks he won for instance

    • @SuperHammaren
      @SuperHammaren 8 лет назад

      benoit leclef Yes, I play frequently and had for years. Playing forehand and backhand like you had the upper part of your arm stuck to your body with a belt using continental grip is not the best way. He used angles well with good wrists, which were efficient against players 3 m behind the baseline but less with players that also take the ball early as most do today and hit considerably harder. Creating his own speed was not his strength, partly due to stroke limitations, more blocking his opponents shots to tricky spots on the court. And the French open choke in 84, his bleak performances vs Lendl after 84 and all his outburst during matches (vs Brad Gilbert for example), do you consider that strength? Note We are talking about "best ever single player". Unless possibly by including doubles he is not.

    • @bleclef
      @bleclef 8 лет назад

      I don't think you really understand McEnroe's game, his arms were never "stuck to his body", it's quite ridiculous; he did not only use angles, he was creative, always, fast, extremely fast, had the best hand ever seen in tennis, played forward etc. Thinking that current players hit considerably harder is just hype. Regarding RG in 84 - one of his three defeats (unmatched record) - he took revenge the very next week in Wimbledon then on flushing. No bleak performance. Outbursting against Gilbert....So what ? Just look at his match records until end 1985; even Federer hasn't that victory rate.
