Hi Tom. I had to do the same repair to my DX302. The gear you need is:
Robinson Racing 64P Alum Silencer Pinion, 36T RRP4336. I got it off ebay for less than $5. You just have to enlarge the hole very slightly with a file to fit it on the shaft. I also replaced the lamps with white LEDs while I had it apart. Not as good a radio as my FRG7, but not bad for a $60 hamfest find. Good luck with your repair.

Thanks for the info. Frog7 has been on my list for years. Not been lucky enough to find a good one at a good price. LOL I am guessing I will have to order the one you mentioned.

hamrad88 You're welcome. I got my FRG7 a couple of years ago at the yearly hamfest I attended with Jim in his home town (Coming up in 3 weeks). I also replaced its' lamps with LEDs. It is a great sounding radio. You won't be disappointed when you finally manage to get one.

I had heard that RC gearing was to best tuning ring selector repair option, thanks for listing the part number.

There was more inside than I thought to be honest. I know modern radio's knock the spots off older budget equipment but I still have a soft spot for the old school.

It is much more fun to tune these old radios than the new ones.

I enjoyed mine when I had it, got one brand new when I worked at Radio Shack back in the early or mid 80's and used my employee discount to buy one after saving up for a while. Was a fun radio.

You don't want one of these radios that someone has had a "Golden Screwdriver" in! :) I have serviced Radio Shack
equipment and used their Service Manuals and they are one of the best servicing manuals I've used.

Dennis, Removing that gearbox is not a hard job at all. The 'Service Manual' shows you all you need to know. Opening the gearbox and replacing the cracked gear wheel is the really hard bit. There are R.C. gears that fit this gearbox, and in doing the swap the receiver works as it should. I am 84yrs and I would not be afraid to do it. The hardest bit is the first minute when you decide to do it or 'ebay' it as spares or repair.

It's not the "golden screwdriver" you need to be wary of as many DIY'ers do quite favourable work (yeah I'm biased)... it's the golden angle grinder and hammer repairs to fear/avoid ;)
