Ben really really earnestly loves the game so it's just interesting that everyone else is much cooler on it, and how that's negotiated. Deepest Dives aren't always big ol love-ins, there was some good discussion on Alan Wake II as the annoyances set in week on week.
@@GamingInTheWild I was not trying to be (too?) snarky. BTW, MinnMax Coucil member since day one :) BUT, Ben really gets defensive about all the warts. It's grating during the podcast, and I'm not sure I can survive 10+ hours of that....
@@zayas0001 To each their own, but what you consider “grating” I consider healthy discussion. It’s cool that the podcast invites so many perspectives; Ben’s able to speak as a superfan while also fostering a forum where criticism is welcome.
Akira Toriyama was one of the most important artist and visionary of our lifetime. Really felt his impact in my gut after hearing the news, much like Ben. I grew up reading Dr. Slump, which was not as huge as DB in the West but equally fun and influential. RIP Mr. Toriyama.
Always love Kelsey’s suggestions, and 13 sentinels is on PS plus so I guess I know what I’m playing next! Also: Don’t get me wrong, I am a lifelong FFVII apostle and I love the Deepest Dive, but it’s pretty cool to also hear spicier takes on FFVII
One issue I've noticed about Rebirth discussions here on MinnMax (the main podcast not The Deep Dive) and elsewhere: a lot of those disappointed with the Rebirth open world never played the original, so I think they played Remake and assumed all of FF7 is that linear, which was never the case. That's not their fault, or the developers, but I think they had an expectation for where Rebirth would go based on only playing Remake, and that was just never going to happen with the way the post-Midgar sections in the OG FF7 were structured, especially the several hours directly following Midgar.
Rebirth's open world activities could easily be much better if it played to using FF7's strengths: it's great cast of party members, and the lore of FF7's world. So instead of scanning a Lifespring with a gun and getting a call from Chadley, why not have Aerith 'speak to the planet' through the lifespring, so that she discovers the local area's lore and shares that information with you. Touches like that can make the game feel like an adventure that only these characters can have in this specific world, otherwise these activities are just plain generic busywork.
I think the open regions would be better with a little bit of content to explore and find for yourself. Everything is marked on the map except for those treasures and I maybe found one materia. It's like "Let's explore the world" but the world comes with a full tour guide :D. And some regions are also not well designed for exploring, like Gongaga. If they would not put map markers there then you would never know that you can reach some places.
About the voice acting in Unicorn Overlord sounding like it’s in a tin can: I think it’s just heavy effects over the voices depending on the environment the characters are in. If you bring up the log and replay the voices, they don’t have the same effects and they sound a lot clearer. So yeah I noticed that too, but II think they were recorded correctly and they really wanted to make it sound like they were in a cave or in a place with stone walls or something.
1:12:28 I don't think Toriyama was a gamer, but he definitely played the early Dragon Quest games. There's pictures of him playing DQV with his kids, and I have a volume of Dragon Ball from 1987 where a reader asked him if he played the Dragon Quest games and he said that he was at the end of DQ2. While he could have just been saying that to promote the game, Toiryama was always blatantly honest so I believe that he was telling the truth.
I love FF7 and the really like and appreciate the remakes, but Jeff makes really good points too. So a shout out to Jeff. I love it when parents get really into one game and thats the only thing they play. Ive only seen my mom play one game ever, but she put literally hundreds of hours into pokemon trozei of all things.

Blew my mind cause our household only ever saw video games if I asked for them for Christmas or birthday and here was a brand new system that I could play (when she wasn't, lol).
There’s a lot of history in the Tactics type of game that Unicorn Overlord draws it’s play from. I’ve been waiting since the Nintendo 64 for a game like this to scratch the same itch. I’m glad it’s finally here, and in such a pretty package.

Jeff's rebirth rant really rang true for me. Getting to the Junon region after the awesome mythril mine section and finding out I was going to do the same open world tasks all over again took a lot of wind out of my sails. And that has mostly kept up about 60 hours in now. Everything outside of Chadley's chores is so fun for me, it hurts to keep going through them over and over again. Feels like a problem I thought breath of the wild solved 7 years ago.

The FF7 discussion is driving me crazy. Isnt the dynamic difficulty exactly what JeffM and Kyle are wanting? Enemies and bosses will scale to your level like FF8. Meaning you can just complete side stuff that you feel gives you rewards you actually want and engage with the story stuff at your own pace. I love the side content for giving me more to do in the world. I did everything in rebirth and i'm glad there was a reason to stick around in areas before moving on to the next story segment.
Choosing dynamic difficulty requires having a sense of curiosity for the medium and a thirst for engaging experiences. If you listened to this podcast for any length of time you know thats not the case here. MinnMax engages with games on a very casual surface level and then its on to the next and frankly thats perfectly fine we should adjust our expectations and spare ourselves any further frustrations. Its honestly a fascinating window into how a narrow minded approach can skew your perception of any given experience and I find it quite valuable.
@@angelom304 This thread is touching specifically on the section of the conversation that pertains to difficulty. Chadley is a whole other conversation unto himself.
I'm not even that impressed with the story so far (as of chapter 7) but agree the open world activities are a drag. I switched to easy mode so I could blaze past that stuff. So tired of hooting owls, baby chocobos, and the entire concept of Chadley. They relentlessly badger the player and undercut the joy of discovering things on your own through exploration.
He summed it up perfectly, Chadley gameified it too much. would've been better to not show the icons for everything in the world. for example the summon stuff didnt need an icon on map the incentive is already laid out, want a stronger summon and fight it at its least power go find those crystals. instead its now another checkmark to do and leaves no sense of discovery. But the OG nostalgia is very strong so im still doing as much as i can in each region.
Please, for the love of everything, give dynamic difficulty a chance. I completed the game using dynamic difficulty and focused solely on the side quests with my preferred companion to build affinity. It made for a thoroughly enjoyable and balanced challenge from start to finish.
Not a huge fan of all of Vanillaware's games, stuff like Dragon's Crown and Grim Grimoire is not for me But 13 Sentinels is an incredible game. Would definitely be in a lot of peoples' top 5 or10 games all time if more people played it. Incredible story and great gameplay. Dont see how anyone could dislike that game unless you just dont like games with a drawn artstyle/hate all things even vaguely looking like anime
I can imagine people who don't like Visual Novels/Old School Adventure games not liking 13 Sentinels, luckily I'm a fan of those genres. Each Vanillaware is different gameplay wise and thats what great about them. Their mantra is reviving genres of games they loved growing up and putting the Vanillaware flavor in them.
Another splendid episode. Great cast. Wonderfully insightful and fun show. Thanks MinnMax peeps. (random prediction--FF7R won't make MinnMax's top 10 at the end of the year)
As similar as Rebirth has felt to the Yakuza series, I've had to remind myself to not get too mad at the weaker parts of the game. People don't lambast Yakuza games because the Poker/Blackjack/Darts/Batting Cages/Shogi/etc. stuff is the same as every other game, they're completely optional extras. It's up to you to focus on the parts you like, unless you just hate the combat and refuse to do any kind of fighting to maintain a decent level to get through the main story (which almost every RPG requires). I'm planning to 100% everything in the game (eventually, probably after Dragon's Dogma 2) and there are definitely parts I would've cut but there's been far more good than bad.
Same as Jeff, I played the heck out of those Dark Forces games as a kid. (Jedi Academy was my favorite game for a very long time, though somehow I never got my hands on Jedi Outcast.) Those levels in the first game could be unforgivingly difficult to navigate, I remember running around clueless until I ran into the right switch to flip or card to pick up or hallway to run down... I have fonder memories of the first sequel, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. (What a wild naming convention this series went through, dropping "Dark Forces" altogether for the third game.) Hope that game gets the remaster treatment, too. Does anyone know if the game has a graphics setting that replicates the original, btw? I like the jagged pixelated look a good deal more than all the sharp smoothness of this remaster!
1:51:51 In the past, Team Ninja were the gods of gameplay AND of presentation. Look at Dead or Alive 3 on the original Xbox, it plays great and looks absolutely phenomenal --- you could fool someone into thinking it's a 360 game but in fact it came out at the Xbox launch in 2001!
Its been pretty funny to see week by week everyone that has come on to chat about rebirth tear it down but always at the end they say the same "but im enjoying my time with the game." Totally fair but its just amusing that most of their dialogue wouldnt make me believe they're enjoying themselves with rebirth.
Oh on the subject of akira toriyama, i was rewatching the chrono trigger replay the other day, i think, and Reiner said they received custom made art by him for the cover but then were told they couldn't use it because it would be sold on the black market. I wonder if that exists anywhere still. 🤔
I think video game reviewers need to remember that while a reviewer has played many games, and may find certain things uninspired, you have to acknowledge a lot of fans may not have played all those other games. So it's not going to be a pain point for them. So I'm sorry that side quests aren't jiving with rebirth, but I would still give them credit for the effort of making them more interesting than how they were presented in Remake. To follow up as well, side quests and world Intel I would divide Into two different things cause world Intel isn't a side quest in my opinion. I haven't played the game simply mainlining it so idk what side quests or world Intel points it forces on you, cause I'm pretty sure you don't have to master anything either to get credit for a lot of these things. I've overall had no issue completing world Intel. Lifestream crystals help preserve history and I assume they have you scan multiple to triangulate items. Complaining about three triangle presses is a bit much the point of that is to make it more interactive beyond push triangle once.. everything is very rewarding and you unlock more points to fast travel through.
I feel bad for Kyle losing progress in Rebirth, I couldn't imagine losing 3 hours of playtime. I also want to know how you play a RPG and don't manual save after 3 hours! In Rebirth I've used all save slots and pop a manual save every 30 minutes or so.
In Kyle’s defense, the game does a pretty middling job of auto saving after accomplishments. For instance, I beat the Phoenix and got its materia two days ago. It was late and I was tired, so I made the mistake of turning my game off instead of putting the ps5 in rest mode. Went back to it after work the next day and auto save was like 40 minutes from before I beat the phoenix.
Interested to hear Kyle’s take on the Planet of the Apes movies. I’m one of the few who has never understood why people praise them. To be fair, I’m not a fan of recent Star Wars or Marvel’s stuff either. But I’ve always wanted to like the Apes movies and… I just feel they’re heavy cgi action movies in the vein of MCU style popcorn flicks 🤷♂️
There are multiple pro MMA fighters in the UFC who have dragon ball z tattoos. Bryan Battle is the most intricate example maybe, he has a single Dragon with Dragon Balls tattoo that goes from his leg, to a full back tat with arm sleeve

i made it about 30 seconds in the snapping video. It didnt get me until the dude started making very strained effort faces like he was getting fatigued lmao
I really enjoyed listening to Jeffm on FF7R. I agree about the side quests and something I'd add is that they trained us with the last game by hiding content behind doing all the side quests and now there's so much repetitive side quests like the crystals that just take so much time but I've done it all incase they hide something important after all activities are done.
The sidequest that broke me in Rebirth: Hey, craft a trap to rescue this baby bird. Okay! This shouldn't be that bad. Except-- Oh, to craft the trap, I have to have the transmuter chip. To find the transmuter chip, I have to do the crystals that reveal the location! To find the crystals, I have to do all the towers in the region! An hour later: Okay. I can craft the trap! Lets knock this sidequest out! The sidequest: Leave one trap at three locations spread across the map. After leaving the third trap, REVISIT all three locations and fight monsters. Congrats! This sidequest took almost two hours of my life! What did I get?! I get... a one-star materia, barret's green smiley face remains a green smiley face, and here's a cute two minute cutscene where everyone in this entire world thinks a bird w/ clouds hair is literally the funniest thing that's ever happened. Nope. I'm done. I can't believe this game reviewed as well as it did. This is obnoxious. an hour of story, twenty minutes of fan service/nostalgia bait, and then 2-3 hours of mindless, boring chores for often terrible rewards. This flat-out sucks.
60 hours in Rebirth at Chapter 10. I feel the same as Kyle and Jeff. Main story feels like an after thought because of all the padding (they stretched out the filler stuff in the OG a lot) and you cant really ignore the side stuff because the materia and items you need for main story battles are there, and no putting it on easy is not a good solution. It could all have been tolerable if it wasnt all about Chadley.
Really hope they also remaster Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. And wow... they really butchered that fantastic stage 1 song of Contra in Operation Galuga.
it's only been 5 years if you count the reboot. I think TOTK is a pretty good indicator that development time isn't getting egregiously long at Nintendo (considering it was a COVID game), but they are definitely staffing up compared to BotW, so budgets are increasing, while probably not at the same pace on all games (there are still games like Mario Wonder with surprisingly small development teams)
I don't like Ubisoft style open world games but I've been having fun doing all the open world stuff in Rebirth. The way the game is, I don't think it would be fun if there were no icons or anything.
My favorite part was when ben was like dont be afraid to say bad things about rebirth then instantly gets on the defensive when someone says they dont like a thing
One day Dragon Quest will get its time in the sun with western audiences once they've moved on from Cloud Strife. It'll be glorious and the "dragon quest is traditional, final fantasy tries new things!!" narrative will fall by the way side
@@luchaluchalucha do you actively choose dq8 over the others or just for nostalgic purposes? Dq8 was basically my intro to the series and finished first but after playing all the games it doesn’t hold a candle to most of the others, I think dq8 is where dq got it’s rep for being “traditional” and afraid to make changes because dq8 is so straight forward ps2 era goodness
Jeff: the side quests in FF7 Rebirth are boring Ben: then skip them. Focus on the main story and drop the difficulty down if necessary Jeff: No, I’m going to keep doing them so I can whiiiiine about optional content like a big baby
@@jonathanbaird Was a joke, relax. Echoing Ben's sentiment (who is also joking when he talks about taking crazy pills). Thanks for trying to correct me though on a non serious comment lol
I really don’t get why most of MinnMax has been ragging on Rebirth. It literally has a 93 on MC/OC out of over 100 reviews and it’ll definitely get GOTY noms. Would love for Ben to bring on some folks who actually enjoyed the game (outside of deepest dive)
I have Nothing but love for MinnMax cast, but boy, its so frustrating when both Jeff and Jacob is on an episode. They complain sooooo much. You had to do a bunch of running around and grind a bunch in the JRPGs of the 90s too. Its part of the fun. Rebirth is absolutely amazing. Sure, some of the mini games you have to do can get annoying, but overall I love the open world stuff. And the story is insane. No matter where it goes I'm here for it.
😆 I know Jacob isn't on this episode. I just lumped them together because they share the same characteristics. Also, don't get me wrong, they have some valid points, but I just think they focus on the negative too much. And I personally love this Remake trilogy, but this game was fighting an uphill battle to begin with because of how beloved OG is. It was never going to be perfect for everyone and that's OK.
@chodi.foster it's not mindless for me. It's actually quite meditative for me. I personally enjoy running around the beautiful environments looking for all the Intel shit. I dont mind having the patience required for appreciating the entirety of it. Could some of it be better? Yes, I agree, but I'm just grateful for a new and familiar story fully brought to life with modern graphics. But then again, I was 8 when OG came out, so it could just be my nostalgic glasses that I've had on since Remake. If you don't feel the same, then that's OK.
I cannot believe how many people like rebirth. By the time I got to the gold saucer for the second time, I literally could not do it anymore. It’s terrible old school game design time wasting bull shit. Awful stuff. I literally ended up hating my time with it.

Those levels in the first game could be unforgivingly difficult to navigate, I remember running around clueless until I ran into the right switch to flip or card to pick up or hallway to run down...
Congratulations jeffM enjoy your 2 month nap🎉

In the past, Team Ninja were the gods of gameplay AND of presentation.
Look at Dead or Alive 3 on the original Xbox, it plays great and looks absolutely phenomenal --- you could fool someone into thinking it's a 360 game but in fact it came out at the Xbox launch in 2001!
Can't wait for artists to start drawing Patterson Pocket Ron 😂
Its been pretty funny to see week by week everyone that has come on to chat about rebirth tear it down but always at the end they say the same "but im enjoying my time with the game."
Totally fair but its just amusing that most of their dialogue wouldnt make me believe they're enjoying themselves with rebirth.
I think JeffM was on to something with the signout
Oh on the subject of akira toriyama, i was rewatching the chrono trigger replay the other day, i think, and Reiner said they received custom made art by him for the cover but then were told they couldn't use it because it would be sold on the black market. I wonder if that exists anywhere still. 🤔
I just want to know who is traveling the world of FF7 and kicking over all the damn Chocobo Stop signs. Just rude.
The real GALOT is the comment section to the snap video, reading whilst viewing had me heaving
Interested to hear Kyle’s take on the Planet of the Apes movies. I’m one of the few who has never understood why people praise them. To be fair, I’m not a fan of recent Star Wars or Marvel’s stuff either. But I’ve always wanted to like the Apes movies and… I just feel they’re heavy cgi action movies in the vein of MCU style popcorn flicks 🤷♂️
ben so aggressively defends rebirth it’s almost impossible not to poke at rebirth to get a reaction lmao
Wait...JeffM is having another kid!? Congrats!
There are multiple pro MMA fighters in the UFC who have dragon ball z tattoos. Bryan Battle is the most intricate example maybe, he has a single Dragon with Dragon Balls tattoo that goes from his leg, to a full back tat with arm sleeve
Bring back Jena for JeffM's time off🎉
Watching Ben get so uncomfortable when someone talks negative about FF7 rebirth is great
I see TristaBytes, British streamer/presenter in the trailer for llama soft. She's a fun streamer (although I haven't seen her online for a few months)
Reading and reviewing the first volume of the Dragon Ball manga (with young Goku) should be a New Show Plus idea.
Ben “LET ME SEE THAT MOUTH” Hanson
Missed joke opportunities. When JeffM said Five Guys when talking about Contra, someone should've said "Burgers and Fries"(you guys have these in MN?)
It would help knowing what language you were talking about in regards to the voice acting in Unicorn Overlord lol
What's the craziest cribbage board your dad has made, Ben?
i made it about 30 seconds in the snapping video.
No gallup or prance Cloud would mosey.
Hey Ben and co. Any chance of posting that new show overflow Dan R episode on youtube? Thanks.
Hey! Tuesday!
@@minnmax Thank you kindly.
Really hope they also remaster Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. And wow... they really butchered that fantastic stage 1 song of Contra in Operation Galuga.
"[Nintendo] won't start taking 7 years to..." *cough*MetroidPrime4*cough*
it's only been 5 years if you count the reboot.
What is the dragon ball game at 1:15:45?
That is Sand Land, releasing next month :)
Ah ty. Never heard of it but it looks amazing.
I stayed for the whole show to see if JeffM's gonna snap out of it.
he did not. or did
One day Dragon Quest will get its time in the sun with western audiences once they've moved on from Cloud Strife.
It'll be glorious and the "dragon quest is traditional, final fantasy tries new things!!" narrative will fall by the way side
I just need dragon quest 8 playable on modern hardware
@@luchaluchalucha do you actively choose dq8 over the others or just for nostalgic purposes? Dq8 was basically my intro to the series and finished first but after playing all the games it doesn’t hold a candle to most of the others, I think dq8 is where dq got it’s rep for being “traditional” and afraid to make changes because dq8 is so straight forward ps2 era goodness
haha another week another tortured ff7 convo
Tifa has been my secret waifu for 27 years now.
Jeff: the side quests in FF7 Rebirth are boring
Ben: then skip them. Focus on the main story and drop the difficulty down if necessary
Jeff: No, I’m going to keep doing them so I can whiiiiine about optional content like a big baby
Waited so long for Lucas Popes Playdate game that I had already sold my Playdate off for a profit past year
25:04 Glad we can all agree western games suck
Ben: It's OK to say negative things about FF7. Ben 5 seconds later: How dare you say the open world and side activities are bad!!!!? LOL
The Playdate should've been $50 at most.
Ben, don't worry, you aren't taking crazy pills. Your take on Rebirth is 100% the correct one
“Correct”? About a subjective experience? These are opinions, not scientifically measurable and verifiable facts.
@@jonathanbaird Was a joke, relax. Echoing Ben's sentiment (who is also joking when he talks about taking crazy pills). Thanks for trying to correct me though on a non serious comment lol
The main reason way you want to breeze through it on easy mode in FF7 Rebirth is to unlock hard mode so you can play the game for real.
Unicorn Overlord just looks like exactly like at least 30 different Amiga 500 games from the late 80's early 90's.
JeffM’s view on FF is exactly what I feel.
I really don’t get why most of MinnMax has been ragging on Rebirth. It literally has a 93 on MC/OC out of over 100 reviews and it’ll definitely get GOTY noms. Would love for Ben to bring on some folks who actually enjoyed the game (outside of deepest dive)
Breaking news! Not every game is for everyone. And Final Fantasy especially isnt for everyone.
Most of them like it they just don’t like certain aspects of the game which is fair. No game is perfect except for Tetris. Tetris is perfect.
Jacob? Do you mean someone else? Or a different ep?
Jacob is not on this episode.
Grinding mindless tasks is not fun. I dont care what decade it is. It's fun for you... for some reason. And that's okay I guess.
Of course Ben "funny high school kid" Hanson loves Jimmy Kimmel.
Yikes, the Rebirth talk in the Two Tens is gonna be biased as heck. 😅
I love it when people use "biased" to mean "holding a differing opinion that I will now invalidate in my head".
@@jonathanbaird not in my head. In Ben's. Its gonna be him x the rest of the cast against Rebirth.
I cannot believe how many people like rebirth. By the time I got to the gold saucer for the second time, I literally could not do it anymore.
It’s terrible old school game design time wasting bull shit. Awful stuff. I literally ended up hating my time with it.
I had fun :)
It's been awesome
Fully understand why it’s rated so highly, it’s awesome
Its ok to be wrong
Good gosh this was as “filler” as an episode can be. Slow news week
Drove 28 highway miles, one way, to buy Unicorn Overlord immediately after work last Friday. Absolutely worth it! ❤️🦄⚔️🪓🏹
I love the game. It's my current GOTY. This is the Ogre Battle 64 sequel I always wanted.
You know digital games are a thing right lol?
