- Join me for a walk around the centre of Aylesbury, the historic county town of Buckinghamshire since 1529, and home to a dazzling array of history, from its origins as a market town in the Saxon period, through the English Civil War, to its starring role in the trial of the Great Train Robbery, and the early career of David Bowie!
On our walk around Aylesbury, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including St. Mary the Virgin's Church, Church Square, Buckinghamshire County Museum, Roald Dahl Children's Gallery, The Queens Head, Kingsbury Square, the statue of John Hampden, the statue of Benjamin Disraeli, The King's Head, Aylesbury Market Square, Aylesbury Clock Tower, Aylesbury Town Hall, the statue of David Bowie, Judges' Lodgings, The Bell Hotel, The White Swan Inn, Buckinghamshire County Hall, Waterside Theatre, and the statue of Ronnie Barker.

Good evening! Thank you so much for over 7,700 subscribers - I'm really glad to hear that you're enjoying the videos :) This evening, we're going for a walk around one of England's most historic market towns, and the county town of Buckinghamshire: Aylesbury!
As for some bonus info about the town, we mentioned briefly that a church has stood in Aylesbury since around 571 AD in the Anglo-Saxon period, and it's possible that the town's name refers to just that! In Saxon times, Aylesbury was known as 'Aegelesburgh', with the 'Aegeles' part of the name thought to be related to the Welsh word 'eglwys', meaning 'church'.
Thank you, that was very interesting and informative.
I was to give my opinion to this walk video, it was just fantastic, just showing me how beautiful this town is and what kind of events had taken place in the previous centuries and in the years after too. Especially the statues of David Robert Jones alias David Bowie. Being en route in this video I enjoyed it very much. Many thanks and many good commentaries in written form you have commented.
My Home Town
The Stoke Mandeville village had nothing to do with the games, but it was the Stoke Mandeville Hospital, based in Aylesbury, where the games were started.
How fascinating. loved the walk and history lesson.
Thankyou for making such a positive video of my home town.
Nice walk of the town. It was enjoyable. Very beautiful and historical the town is. The church looks beautiful also. Your history lessons are always great and wonderful. And your walks are always great and wonderful also. Hope to see more soon. Have a great week. 👍😀
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video - certainly Aylesbury's church is a beautiful one :)
Thank you for the narrative. That helps us see and understand at the same time. No head-scratching after looking at beautiful buildings we know nothing about.
You're welcome! And thank you very much for watching and for those kind words - I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed the video, it always is nice to get a bit of back story and context on the landmarks to be seen in places as fascinating as Aylesbury :0
Thanks for the video. God bless.
And many thanks to you for watching! I'm really glad you enjoyed the walk around Aylesbury :)
What a pleasant surprise! I always thought Aylesbury consisted of little more than a high street. You live and learn, eh? Thanks again , LW.
Indeed! Aylesbury is absolutely jam-packed with history but there's a lot more to the town than I knew too - it's a fascinating place to visit when you know where to look :)
Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Another great video. You are very lucky with the weather, which is great for us.
Indeed I am! I do try to plan ahead with the weather but as I'm sure you know the forecast only gets you so far 😅
Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you're enjoying the videos!
A cool video
i went back there recently and was most surprised how not only things have changed but also how tiny everything now looks ..
I still remember looking out for the ghost of Old Jasper Jackson in the St Marys graveyard , the story in the 70´s was he jumped out of the top window in Derby Arms pub .
The Green Man also brings back memories of the punk years and it being the meeting point before Friars . White Swan was alwo known locally as ‘ Fosche ´s place ‘ old bob ...
I know all these streets , walked them all going to and from school but that is no longer there ( quarrendon ) and even laid every red brick in the market square early 90 ´s .
Thanks for this, our hometown 😎
You're welcome! I hope that the walk did your hometown justice - Aylesbury is a proud place with some wonderful history :)
Thank you so much for watching!

I spent about 2 weeks in Stoke Mandeville Hospital in 2002
So I know Aylesbury quite well
Thank you for another great video. Some very varied and attractive architecture. Not sure about the brutalist style though, definately an acquired taste.
You're welcome! And thank you very much for watching - Aylesbury certainly does have a great variety of architecture, though I think I'm with you on the brutalist style, not quite my cup of tea :)
The John Hampden statue was moved from its original location when they revived the market on the square. He used to point an accusing finger at the Court.
great!
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video :)
Nice walk, pigeons don`t afraid of people, that is interesting.
Ha ha that's very true! Thank you very much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video :)

Traffic lights around of the walk
I was surprised to see two Wetherspoon pubs in Aylesbury.
And that's just in the town centre! Aylesbury is a magnificent hub of pub culture and history, and Wetherspoons have kept a number of its oldest pub names alive :)
Thank you so much for watching and commenting as always - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
thank you. I like it. I posted a video of a walk through a northern town in Russia. Enjoy watching
The John hampden statue is being moved im just making note I knew that
I am a foreigner and I have found a job in Aylesbury,. However, I have never been there . Please, what is the easiest way to get it from London?
Hi there! Aylesbury is easily reached from London - there are regular trains to the town centre from London's Marylebone station through the day every day :) I hope that helps!
@@LetsWalkUK Thank you very much! 👍

The home of the paralympics is Stoke mandaville not Aylesbury
It's a crying shame what has happened to Aylesbury
I live there
What's it like? What's your honest opinion on living there? We're thinking about moving there.
It's a great town - lots of shops, easy direct links to London and some amazing countryside on the doorstep, there's a lot that makes Aylesbury a great place to visit and live :)
