Cowboys DE Pat Toomay's (#67) last season with the Cowboys before he went on to a five-year career from 1975 to 1979 with three different teams. A solid pass rusher with 31.5 career sacks in Dallas. I learned in Harvey Martin's 1986 book 𝑻𝒆𝒙𝒂𝒔 𝑻𝒉𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 that he didn't like Toomay because he felt that Toomay was scared to face Art Shell (who wasn't scared to face Shell in the 1970s?) in a 1974 preseason game against the Oakland Raiders. Martin felt like Toomay was soft. He also pointed out in his book that he felt that Toomay was jealous of him ever since his 1973 rookie season when he led the Cowboys in sacks with 9, plus there was the fact that Toomay knew that Martin was gunning for his job and that he was going to get it by 1974 or 1975. That 1974 preseason game, the drafting of Ed Too Tall Jones in '74, and Martin's own talents sealed Toomay's fate after the '74 season. To Toomay's credit, he went on to a solid career after he left the Cowboys which included 14.5 sacks in 1977.
Thank you for the Upload of a Team up North. For a fan of the Houston Oilers "it caused me many male problems" that would never be resolved in the Go Texans Go.😁
There lies the problem between the two Cowboy championships in the seventies. The team didn't have a premiere running back after winning in 71 with Thomas and would not win again until Dorsett arrived in 77
@@misterresister8271 Hill played very well in Landry's system but he was not the game breaker like Duane Thomas or Tony Dorsett. Robert Newhouse nearly gained 1000 yards in 1975
A month later after the Thanksgiving game, Duane Thomas would rush for over 100 yards in a season-ending 42-0 blowout of the Bears on a Saturday, the game that officially eliminated the Cowboys from the playoffs before their Saturday night encounter with the Raiders. And that was the last NFL game Thomas ever played. It doesn't seem the Skins took him to LA for their divisional playoff game. In 1975, he was rather delusional asking the Redskins for a pay bump from $60,000 to $165,000 and George Allen released him. True to his rebellious form, Thomas kept showing up for practise with the team for a few days before the message sunk in. He then flamed out in the WFL, then failed to land with the Cowboys again in 1976, and got cut by both the CFL's BC Lions and the Green Bay Packers.
What sucked about this season was that Dallas looked so strong on both sides of the ball in the opening day shutout of Atlanta, 24-0. Absolutely nothing in that game hinted at the four game losing streak to come, particularly those stinkaroo offensive efforts against the Eagles and Giants. Both NY and Philly looked like teams going somewhere in those early wins, but IIRC, both fell off a cliff the rest of the season. A rare highlight for Dallas was reversing all four losses to their division opponents in the rematches in 1974, including wins over playoff-bound St. Louis and Washington.
Definitely a "Champion in Waiting." After 1974's "mediocre" season they lost Calvin Hill, Bob Lilly, Walt Garrison, Cornell Green and Bob Hayes. But then they had one of their best draft classes ever with the Dirty Dozen and won the nfc in 1975, and went to 3 Super Bowls in 4 years.
By that time Cowboys fans just expected us to get to the Super Bowl every single year...But 74' was a bit of a set back and a let down, I think we went 8-6, after a lot of tough games, tough losses, and tight wins that year...We were good, good team that wasn't quite there yet, a bit of a rebuilding season, a season of transition for us....But there was much promise for the future, you could see it was coming together...We went to the Super Bowl the next year!!!

They sucked that season and ironic thing is the Cowboys’ schedule was garbage. They didn’t play any great teams except for Minnesota and Oakland. I don’t think STL or WAS were that much better than average. Did Landry drop a lot of players between ‘74 and ‘75? Looks like they revamped the offense, at least at RB.
Between 73, 74, and 75 the Cowboys brought in a lot of players such as Drew Pearson, Harvey Martin, Ed Jones and Randy White. They retired or lossed Bob Lilly, Bob Hayes, Walt Garrison and Calvin Hill to name a few.

The year the Dallas Cowboys missed the NFL Playoffs. Bob Lilly retired that year.
So did Cornell Green and Walt Garrison
Love the striped football and the voice of God.
1974 was only season that the Dallas Cowboys did not make it to the playoffs in the 1970s.
Great facts
But still another winning season ( from 1966-1985) 20 straight
The 1974 season made the great 1975 draft possible.

What is the tune at 19:57?

1974 was dogshit for the Cowboys. They even lost a game to the Giants.
14-6 at home
They made a great comeback in 1974 but a little to late
The 1974 Thanksgiving classic was the highlight.
In the final game vs Oakland.Did either team sit starters ?
Walt Garrison, and Bob Lilly retired after the 1974 campaign
All the starters played for both teams. The only oddity was that Landry started two TE's in the game, Billy Joe DuPree and Jean Fugett
