My grandpa had a '55 special orange and white 4dr that was parked in the garage for over 20 years,, when he passed away we put a battery on it and it fired right up and the car is still in the family today 👍 only 60k all original, thanks for sharing and as always "Howdy from Texas 😁"!!
The first family car I remember was our 1956 Buick...mostly from pictures. I think this is the nicest design for Buick in the 1950s. The tail lights were a great design and these brothers did a phenomenal job restoring this back to perfection. 👍👍

As has been stated numerous times, LOVE the REAL chrome! From an era that valued design, style, and craftsmanship. While cars from this era, and well before, all lacked safety features, you just can’t help but love these rolling works of art. Thanks Lou and Bill!
My heart lies with the 50s cars, always blew my my mind as boy seeing the occasional one in the road in England in the 80s. This tickles that spot. Gorgeous.
Hi bdb studio, Happy to read this one "tickles that spot" :-) I think you're on the right car Channel as there are many cars here I think you'll find will "tickle" you, Lou
Wow! Chrome for days and dual exhaust, too. You're right, Lou, that stance is perfect. Definitely another labor of love and it sounds like Bill's family will enjoy it for future generations, too.
My Dad had one when I was a kid, I remember being amazed at the speedometer, it having a line coming across instead of the needle, I loved that car. Also how it started, you turned on the key switch and you mashed the gas pedal to the floor, it was the starter switch, lol.

That is a beautiful Buick! Most likely came from a dealership in West Seattle named Huling Brothers Buick. They started back in the 1940's if memory serves me. My Grandfather was a salesman there in the 40's . Second generation sold the business about ten years ago. They lasted only a short while after. Thanks Lou.
Hi Skinner Hound, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Cool you're Grandfather sold Buicks. Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
I call the dealer ship about 15 years ago and talk to the manager of the company about my car. Trying to get information about my 56 buick from your dealership ., they never call me back .
Nice video, Lou!! And the best year for Buick!! I owned a 1956 Buick Special 2-door for many years... and it was a sweet car. It drove beautifully and was built like a tank.
What a nice old Buick! My mom and dad had a 1954 Buick it was quite the lemon from rust problems to transmission problems my dad said it was a real pistol. Last time I same on something like this was on the Highway Patrol show. Love the engine sound and I love the interior and two tone paint. He has a very nice unit here. Love the owners and the story of his car was great! Thanks Lou for sharing!
If you look at the "Highway Patrol" TV series from 1955-59, they used alot of Buicks for the series. A beautiful car, and a nice piece of history. I like how the owner is quite informed about the details about his car!
Nice car, great lines. He should say "my chrome weighs more than YOUR HOUSE"!! When you bought a car back then I think they charged by the pound!! lol GREAT VIDEO LOU

Another reason Buick has some how survived despite the fact they build junk today. Beautiful car Lou. Thanks for all your videos while I am stuck at home. Hope to see you at Corvettes at Carlisle 2020.
Hi George Matter, Glad to read you enjoy the looks of this one, and thanks for sharing the reason Buick is still here. You're welcome and thank you for watching. This year currently my only trip scheduled to Carlisle is for the Chrysler Nationals. Hope you can make that one, and if you do, even thought I'll be running to get as many cars videoed as possible, make sure you slow me down and say hello, Lou
At that time my dad was working for Winnipeg Motor Products in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada as a “mechanic.” He bought from them a 1956 Buick “Special.” It was a four-door sedan, light green, with grey “leather upholstery.” I travelled to British Columbia, Canada in it when I was “four-years-old,” and my dad took a route through the U.S. to get there, because the “Trans-Canada Highway” had not been completed in the western part of our country. My dad sold the car in 1960 to a neighbour when he bought his 1958 Cadillac. I remember well seeing it parked for a few years in their backyard “outdoors,” since they didn’t have a garage. Exposed to the elements, the body mounts rusted out on the chassis. As a result, the body “shifted” on it as my neighbour was driving downhill on an overpass! A scary situation indeed, and I don’t think he ever forgave my dad for putting him through it!
Awesome car! Indeed I think the '56 was Buick's best-looking car of the Fifties. The '57 also had the year on the front medallion (but without the series name), then they gave up this practice, apparently because in this era of "planned obsolescence" most people didn't care to advertise how dated their cars were as the years went by. Looking forward to more your classic car stories!
This one just came across my feed! And I've made the comment before........ we had the 4-door hardtop in red over white when I was growing up!! Lots of "special" memories.......... sorry Lou...... I couldn't resist!😉 (this car had power!!)
I Love Buicks. I've owned two. A 1965 Buick Electra 225 and a 1986 (I think) Buick Skyhawks T-type. This 1956 Buick is from an era that when you drove a Buick, you were somebody important. Definitely NOT an Everyman's car. Loved the info. about the hood scoop with the holes I didn't know that fact either. So we've learned here that the Special was the lowest trim level available in '56. However, even in the lowest trim level, this car is beautiful and you would never know it was the lowest trim level. The Special inerior from the book that showed black/yellow on the outside and red/black on the inside was WILD! Thnkas Lou! Another fantastic video.
Hi Brian, Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Happy to read you learned something from the video. I'm learning from the Caretakers all the time, and I find that to be so much fun learning :-) You're welcome. I appreciate the kind words. It's encouraging, Lou

Wow! This brings me so many souvenirs when I was a kid in the early sixties! Had an accident in this car, September 1962, face to face with a Studebaker 1960 at 60 miles an hour. I still have a scar on my leg. The driver of the Studebaker died shortly after the impact. I was six years old. My sister hit the windshield from her front seat. We had the Special canadian version but not this level of quality. Thanks for the flashback Lou. ☺️🤚
WOW! Now, this is one Bwick I would wike tew dwive! Huh-huh-huh. A beautiful work of 1950s epic art on wheels! I envy Bill! But in a good way. Special is a great word for this car. I think I like this better than the Roadmaster. I dunno - both are gorgeous.
Hi ImTheDaveman, Happy to receive a "WOW!" from you :-) Always a treat to read your entertaining clever comments :-) Thank you for sharing, and appreciate you commenting, Lou
Well , extra thanks: nice UICK @ some 92K miles, he said ? Womderful Buick & Video: my PARENTS bought a 1953 Buick yellow Black 2 D/ DYNAFLOW( interestingly from the Father of Dealer , I ordered my 77 SPECIAL ED TRANS AM in Oct 76)...Tjere are some really nice Buick’s produced......
Beautiful car! Very well done. Back in 1956 a Buick was really a Buick! For not much more money a person could have bought that car instead of a Chevy Bel Air! Maybe 200.00 more if that. Still, 200.00 was a ton of money for a lot of people in those days.
Just in case anyone is would like to see the brochures of these wonderful cars in full screen on their computer, you can view them on oldcarbrochures.org. They have just about every brochure for every year and make. Thanks for another awesome video Lou!
What a nice Buick! I’ve always liked the 1956 better than the 1955. He’s wrong about that grille in the hood ornament though. The hood ornament with the grille was on early production cars and was later changed to prevent too much road grunge from plugging up the air cleaner. So we can confirm this car was an early production one if that part is original to the car. A great car story about a perfect 50s car. Hard to find one nicer. Thanks Lou!
Hi Fred and Debra MacDonald, Happy to read you enjoy the styling of this car and thank you for sharing your knowledge on the grill & hood ornament. Regarding the video, you're welcome, Lou
Ray, I'd like to see a 56 Buick Super in tritone like I had for my 1st car. It was a 4 door hardtop. I've been told this was the 1st year for the 4dr hardtop. I still have the owner's manual.
The name "Riviera" was applied to all Buick hardtop models from 1949 to 1958. From 1959 to '62, it was used only on the Electra 225 hardtop with six side windows. Beginning in 1963, and continuing through 1999, it was reserved for Buick's personal luxury two-door hardtop (two-door coupe beginning in '74). No Rivieras were made in 1994.
Not to be too picky but a common mistake many peopel make when repainting these cars is not getting the ends of the doors right. Top color goes all the way down. Only the jambs are split. Unusual with power brakes but no steering. Spark plug covers are in place. Often times they're missing.
Pretty to look at, but no so much to drive. My first car was a 4-door pillarless version of this one. It was/is a car carrying over the engineering of the late 1940s and earl;y 50s, rather than reflecting things to come. Maybe the slowest, unassisted steering in any car. A two speed Dynaflow transmission which should have been in the recycle scapeyard, not installed in a new car. A 20 year old suspension design which waddled around a turn at any speed. The brakes were pathetic. Even with a 350 inch V-8, the poor thing couldn't get out of its own way because the engine and transmission had to schedule a conference before executing any demand for speed. Since the default tranny operation was to start off in "high" (normal road gear) and let the torque converter do all of the heavy lifting to get more than 2 tons of ass moving off the line, you could go out for coffee while it cruised up to freeway speed. It had a super boulevard ride on good pavement and a huge interior space, even by the largish standards of the day. The deadheads controlling Buick kept this car in place for 1957 and 1958 with a few styling changes, apparently thinking that their customer base of old duffers would stay with them. That decision was wrong, so the Buick of 1959 was one of the most radical remodels ever produced. Thus the door was opened to Chrysler be to the cars to have in the first half of the 1960s.

These mid 50s' rides are to me like rolling works of art. This Buick epitomizes that. Great in and out, sounds great and the 'dice' is cool, too !!!

The code number of the car is 33 thousand out of 113 thousand
The grills in the hood ornaments only appeared in early production 56 Buick's regardless of sales location.
Thank you for viewing and sharing.
Nice tail fins.
I agree :-)
Ray, I'd like to see a 56 Buick Super in tritone like I had for my 1st car. It was a 4 door hardtop. I've been told this was the 1st year for the 4dr hardtop. I still have the owner's manual.
Sorry, I meant to say Lou.
Hi Blair, Sounds like you had a great car too :-) Hmmm, tri-tone sounds nice, Lou
I'd trade my car, my truck and half my brain to own this car.😆
:-)
Lindo perfeito queria um desse e o meu sonho de consumo .
Hi Dom, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
@@loucostabile Boa Noite .
A question that I had that was not answered is what distinguished the Riviera form the other 56 Buicks?
The name "Riviera" was applied to all Buick hardtop models from 1949 to 1958. From 1959 to '62, it was used only on the Electra 225 hardtop with six side windows. Beginning in 1963, and continuing through 1999, it was reserved for Buick's personal luxury two-door hardtop (two-door coupe beginning in '74). No Rivieras were made in 1994.
Hi Bill, I see Geminisixtyfour was kind to share knowledge & the answer, Lou

Not to be too picky but a common mistake many peopel make when repainting these cars is not getting the ends of the doors right. Top color goes all the way down. Only the jambs are split. Unusual with power brakes but no steering. Spark plug covers are in place. Often times they're missing.
Hi g bridgman, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Lou
Why don’t you ever mention Tom McCail? He never thought much of a car (50s and 60s ) unless you could lay down in the trunk.
Hi Arne Berg, Thank you for mentioning Tom, Lou
Arne, wasn't his name Tom McCahill? And yes, he was quite a character.

Hi Wnna Lantam, Thank you for viewing & sharing, Lou
