    honestly.. i am a 32 yr old black man from philly that.. has not been exposed to much other than r&b and hip hop.. although the lyrics are very very different... I can not deny the emotion it makes me feel when it comes to her unique voice and her breathtaking harp playing. To me this lady has perfect pitch and an emotion invoking voice. I have heard bridges and balloons.. and peach plum pear.. now this.. this is very different.. but i really really like it..

    I always come here when I need to play this to a lover, so that they can understand something very important about who I am, just by listening to it, and energetically feeling my reaction as I listen to it with them. This is the first time I have ever come here to listen to it because I am my own lover and I need to understand something very important about myself. It feels lonely. But good. Necessary.

      I feel sorry that people miss out on her genius and talent. We can just take bigger bites then the ones that have no taste. Yeah for us. I have turned on a few of my friends that did like her from the very first notes. Thank God I don't cry as much as I used to when I first started listening to her. I used to be totally soaked in the early days. I couldn't hold back tears.

    • @dionhalic

      @@brianhall5377 People need to understand to listen only to the harp and then they might hear what you hear I think. In this performance the voice is an accompaniment to the harp. Try it. Don't let go the notes flying off the harp; let the words and the voice go,; they will do what they need to do to let you listen only to the harp. It's a kind of inside out quantum gastrulation. It's magical, and once you catch sight of it you will desire it with all but sensual desire.

    From the top of the flight
    Of the wide, white stairs
    Through the rest of my life
    Do you wait for me there?
    There's a bell in my ears
    There's the wide, white roar
    Drop a bell down the stairs
    Hear it fall forevermore
    Hear it fall, forevermore
    Drop a bell off of the dock
    Blot it out in the sea
    Drowning mute as a rock;
    And sounding mutiny
    There's a light in the wings
    Hits the system of strings
    From the side, where they swing -
    See the wires, the wires, the wires
    And the articulation in our elbows and knees
    Makes us buckle;
    And we couple in endless increase
    As the audience admires
    And the little white dove
    Made with love, made with love;
    Made with glue, and a glove, and some pliers
    Swings a low sickle arc, from its perch in the dark:
    Settle down, settle down, my desire
    And the moment I slept
    I was swept up in a terrible tremor
    Though no longer bereft
    How I shook! And I couldn't remember
    And then the furthermost shake drove a murthering stake in
    And cleft me right down through my center
    And I shouldn't say so
    But I knew that it was then, or never
    Push me back into a tree
    Bind my buttons with salt
    And fill my long ears with bees
    Praying please, please, please
    Oh, you ought not
    No you ought not
    And then the system of strings tugs on the tip of my wings
    (Cut from cardboard and old magazines):
    Makes me warble and rise, like a sparrow
    And in the place where I stood
    There is a circle of wood -
    A cord or two - which you chop
    And you stack in your barrow
    And it is terribly good to carry water and chop wood
    Streaked with soot, heavy-booted and wild-eyed;
    As I crash through the rafters
    And the ropes and the pulleys trail after
    And the holiest belfry burns sky-high
    And then the slow lip of fire moves
    Across the prairie with precision
    While, somewhere, with your pliers and glue
    You make your first incision
    And in a moment of almost-unbearable vision
    Doubled over with the hunger of lions
    Hold me close, cooed the dove
    Who was stuffed, now, with sawdust and diamonds
    I wanted to say: Why the long face?
    Sparrow, perch and play songs of long face
    Burro, buck and bray songs of long face!
    Sing, I will swallow your sadness, and eat your cold clay
    Just to lift your long face;
    And though it may be madness, I will take to the grave
    Your precious longface
    And though our bones they may break, and our souls separate -
    Why the long face?
    And though our bodies recoil from the grip of the soil -
    Why the long face?
    And in the trough of the waves
    Which are pawing like dogs
    Pitch we, pale-faced and grave
    As I write in my log
    Then I hear a noise from the hull
    Seven days out to sea
    And it is that damnable bell!
    And it tolls - well, I believe that it tolls
    It tolls for me and It tolls for me!
    And though my wrists and my waist seemed so easy to break
    Still, my dear, I'd have walked you to the edge of the water
    And they will recognize all the lines of your face
    In the face of the daughter, of the daughter of my daughter
    And darling, we will be fine; but what was yours and mine
    Appears to me a sandcastle
    That the gibbering wave takes
    But if it's all just the same, then will you say my name;
    Say my name in the morning, so that I know when the wave breaks
    I wasn't born of a whistle
    Or milked from a thistle at twilight
    No; I was all horns and thorns
    Sprung out fully formed, knock-kneed and upright
    So enough of this terror
    We deserve to know light
    And grow evermore lighter and lighter
    You would have seen me through
    But I could not undo that desire
    Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh desire
    Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh desire
    Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh desire
    Oh
    Desire, desire, desire
    From the top of the flight
    Of the wide, white stairs
    Through the rest of my life
    Do you wait for me there?

If you look at her facial expression when she plays this, it makes you want to burst into tears and sigh with joy, it's so overwhelmingly beautiful and breathetaking! This has got to be my favorite of hers! The melody is exquisite, her voice is so sweetly natural, and the lyrics are moving, evocative and full of mythological references (which pleases the history geek in me). I'd love to hear how she sounds playing this now. I like her voice both ways, and this song would be lovely either way.
    Plus, she's just so damn adorable! I have a shamefully large girl-crush on her!

    I find that the songs that require a little effort to get your head wrapped around are the ones which reward you more in the long run. I love the struggle, like exploring a new and unfamiliar place finding beautiful things hidden away and then the moment when you find yourself navigating the music with ease swept up in the magic. Opening up to new experiences definately has it's own reward.

    This is probably the only video that I can truly say I do not regret watching all 10 minutes of it.

    Newsom is neither first nor last to explore mortality in her art. And although gibbering the wave that takes it, the sand was moved, as was I.

    I begin to feel great sorrow when she starts on her layered "crazy harper" compositions; interlocking polymetric plucking, then when she completes her kora, African infused "bastardizations" of trad folk music, especially in Ys. Every pluck of the harp plucks at my heart like no other.

    Her voice is unique, and she has a brtilliant understanding of rhythm. Can't you at least appreciate that? Understandably some people will not like the sound of her voice, as it is not exactly commonplace. I particularly like her little squeaks as she transitions to high notes. Im sure some people detest it, but I see it as organic, as natural and again, unique. She is beautiful, all around.
    No spite here, just a simple rational. peace
