Picard gets so annoyed with Commander Hutchinson (call me Hutch) and his "small talk" here that when he hears a passing reference to there being horses here, he instantly jumps at the chance to A: get some riding in on actual horses and B: get away from Commander Hutchinson. Picard returns to the Enterprise shortly before the sweep is to begin to grab his saddle, and while at it discovers that the maintenance crew he saw prepping for the sweep was actually trying to steal some volatile and valuable substances from the warp core. Picard jumps the thieves but gets trapped on the ship when the systems shut down for the sweep, prompting Picard to go all Die Hard on the thieves while trying to find a way off the ship before the deadly beam wall conducting the sweep of the ship kills them all.

After watching the clip a few times (because it cracks me up), I realized it might actually be Spiner who does the fake laugh when he finishes talking. It's confusing because the way Frakes opens his mouth in "shock" and turns to Gates, it looks like he's the one laughing, while Spiner's mouth is just frozen open. But I think Spiner intentionally held his mouth open like that to make the laugh seem more fake, as it was coming from Data. Regardless, it's hilarious either way. 😂

Just the last part. The entire scene is such a gem. From everyone trying to avoid Calvin, Picard trying to justify having his own personal saddle onboard the Enterprise, to Calvin and Data engaging in endless small talk.
Yeah the very end (after The sheliak for example) but I noticed at 0:53 the background/ambient noise & background conversations abruptly cut off while data is saying "It is very good to see you again" so I guess this is obviously an alternate take due to Frakes not being able to keep a straight face if his life depended on it after Spiner poked him in the chest onward (Also, Spiner used a contraction during his last sentence),.. but again, if this was a "realistic"-talking show like Orville, other than the accidental ad-libbed contraction, I could totally see this in the regular episode (especially considering the tone presented with data mimicking Hutch in the BG earlier during the legit scene).

Seeing Brent goof off as Data really makes me respect how good a job he did for the "final cut" of the show. He really does sell the depth of his character well.

I think Brent Spiner was probably the best actor on the show, for the simple reason that his character was/is so wildly far from his normal personality, and he was able to portray Data so convincingly. I can't help but be impressed at how he can move between data, lore and Dr Sung and sell each.

he used a contraction, which Spiner was very well aware of & passionate about (once it had been established, onward) at the time for his character, so yes, the last bit was adlibbed. TNG had a reputation for sticking strictly to the script, if an actor used one wrong word they'd restart the scene, even if it wasn't technobabble bs.
It's hilarious watching Frakes desperately trying to hide his smile and not burst out laughing and then at the end he loses it, while Spiner is absolutely in-character the whole time. Brilliant.
i always felt sad they let him die. it would be a good plot twist if he would actually took out the terrorists somehow. i mean he must have had any other skills except from small talk. he was a senior officer after all
I don't think that rule is brought up after season 4. I think the writers hated that idea and just ignored it. Data did write a dream sub-routine so he could allow himself to use contractions if he wanted to.
yeah they've all said in multiple interviews that everyone on the show were like family and there was never any in-fighting amongst the cast like you hear about "other shows" *cough* voyager.

I love the fact that even the Director of Photography seemed to have been caught off guard and snickering at Brent's performance :D This is why Star Trek TNG was so freaking awesome. People loved their work and for the most part had a great time on set.

It’s a shame that something like this couldn’t have been included. And I know how I’d fit this in, contraction and all: I’d need to have Hutch say almost exactly the same thing about how he can’t talk about blah blah blah in mixed company-because Data’s really copying and pasting that exact dialogue into the subroutine. If he’s pretty much quoting someone verbatim, then that’s how we get around the rule with the contractions.

They had to edit out Spiner's joke because he said "I CAN'T say it in mixed company" when he should have said "I CANNOT say it..." He broke character and a bunch of us nitpicking nerds would have noticed it and complained.
I think Frakes was genuinely blindsided by how funny Brett Spiner was in this scene, and how goofily out of character Data is. All of his laughter is bewildered, and he looks like he is desperately trying not to cackle for most of that scene.
Brent is a comedian at heart. It had to suck to be the "straight man" all the time, due to his actual demeanor. He probably did this to let off some steam.

Spiner messed up at 'humans prefer a body temprature of 21 degrees' and decided to make the best of it. I can't really tell where MacFadden looses it. She reponds very natural - as often happens in these intakes, to the point you'd wanted it to be the take they would have used.

Spiner messed up at 'humans prefer a body temprature of 21 degrees' and decided to make the best of it. I can't really tell where MacFadden looses it. She reponds very natural - as often happens in these intakes, to the point you'd wanted it to be the take they would have used.
