Next time when visiting a Héma in the Netherlands, go to the small hotdog-shop outside, right next to the main entrance! There you must order a "broodje rookworst"! (The correct pronunciation of almost any Dutch word with "oo" in it, is as if it was written with "oa" as in "boat"! "Stroop" is "stroap", "rook" becomes "roak". "Ou" as in "oude" is pronounced as in "outch". 😉👍) The "broodje rookworst" from the Héma is a staple in Dutch streetfood! You can get all kinds of condiments with it, like mustard, ketchup, dried fried onions (which is a killer combo!), but the classic way is with mustard alone... it's heavenly! These "rookworsts" are especially made for Héma and have their own secret recipe. You can buy them inside the store too, in the foodsection. There they are cold and prepackaged. Definitely a "must try"! 🌭😋👍
That frietje kip is actually kinda fancy looking so it's not a regular dish and for 8 euro's you have a far better option elsewhere: the Kapsalon! A Dutch/Turkish dish with fries and kebab, eventually topped with cheese! Much better!
Utrecht my city! I live really close to where you've been in the video, and the supermarket you went to at the end is pretty much my regular supermarket. I was just about to go there actually, but I stopped to watch this video! You should really come back in the winter for some traditional erwtensoep met rookworst, it is the best dish to eat when it is freezing outside! Also, did you try a Frikandelbroodje yet? I would say it is a staple food item for a quick lunch grab here. Great video, nice to see Utrecht from your perspective. I think it is the most charming big city in the Netherlands, but Nijmegen is another really nice city if you're looking to visit another!
I've eaten quite a lot at The Oude Muntkelder in the past, nice to see it as the first one featured, and great combo pick. The stroop used to come in jars, too bad it is in bottles now, kinda gives it a different vibe. But i guess it is less messy that way.
You know Vla is an dessert. You put it in a bowl and eat it with a spoon. You could add slagroom or mix it with yoghurt. My dad had his own vla recipe where he would add strawberry jam, raisins and current (aalbes) to his vla.
When i saw you going to the Hema, i was screaming to my screen "halve warme rookworst!" Do that next time, i prefer a cold day for it..and for the vla, try slagroom vla
Regarding the tomato soup, the "parsley" was actually Thyme, and the fact that it was chunky does not make it like a Bolognese, which is a meat-dominant sauce with three times as much meat as tomato. I love the Netherlands and parts of Germany are beautiful or exceptionally cosmopolitan, but when it comes to food, there's a reason many people from Northern Europe venture south -- the food along the Mediterranean is so much better, fresher and vibrant. Thanks for showing us Utrecht, which is beautiful.
Next time when you go to Utrecht, make sure you go to Anna's Pancakes. Phil you were standing with your back towards Anna's when eating the Febo chicken burger... :-( They really make the best pancakes ever! Thank me later :-)
Hmm that appelflap didn't look good its supposed to be flacky light pastry. (Bladerdeeg in dutch). Homemade are the best🥰. Its nice to see that your so excited about the food in my country ❤
Better canal restaurants as well, because it's got the lower old canal cellars converted to restaurants Amsterdam does not have.. As shown in the video..
Yess. I used to love going to Utrecht. So pittoresque. But I feel like nowadays it's a bit less hip or something. I have a hard time now figuring out what I want to do in the city.
It's very heartwarming to see German people (and americans!) actually enjoying Dutch food hahaha. As a Dutch person, I always return the favor by taking my Filipino girlfriend to Germany during christmas! German Christmas markets are the best! :D
What you missed ! : * Muntkelder : poffertjes + glass of Ranja. Iconic Dutch treat for kids. I had that in De Muntkelder some 60 years ago. * HEMA : tompoes, and 1/2 rookworst. Wearing a long leather coat in the same colour grey as his Great Dane.
As someone who lives half an hour drive away from Venlo, and who pretty much spent half his childhood in the Netherlands and grew up on this stuff, I can honestly say that I love dutch food and dutch supermarkets. I always totally pig out during my frequent shopping- and holiday trips across the border 🇩🇪♥️🇳🇱
The same goes the other way around. I grew up near the German border (even had some German friends through hobbies), and i also lived in Germany a couple of years. Missing out on Hema's 'Rookworst' is a small sin as it is their staple food delight for decades together with their 'Tompous' (although quality has significantly decrease over the years). @ Deana & Phil: Fortunately Hema's can be found all over the country so no excuse to miss these in a replay :) PS: Similar smoked sauge is used in the Dutch 'Snert' and "Erwtensoep' (pea soup) which is very well know soup and generally consumed in the winter months. Definitely one to try as well, if you want to experience our limited real Dutch cuisine.
@@markschattefor6997 I remember the Hema worst from the 60s and 70s and I think its fatness is just the same what has changed is our taste, Dutch people do not like their food that way anymore.

You guys were in the birth place of Dick Bruna! Founder of Nijntje (or Miffy); the illustrated cute bunny which you met at the end credits ("Ik ben niet voor de verkoop" means "I'm not for sale"). Next to that, it's also the birthplace of Gerrit Rietveld, one of the most famous Dutch architects and designers. The HEMA is indeed more suitable for a quick coffee break. You went to Hema was there not peasoup there in the restaurant. I know we are going to sell it again from this monday. Also when you go to HEMA, the thing people come for is the broodje rookworst with either mustard or the vegan HEMA hotdog sauce which is a sweet type of mustard sauce. I saw the appelflap was not propably heated. But yeah eating at HEMA mostly means eating broodje rookworst or pf course the very famous HEMA Tompouce. Greetings a HEMA employee.
I think the comments weren't clear enough: the hema is known for it's rookworst en it's tompouce. They even have shirts and bags etc of it 😂 And the stroopkoeken I would recommend for next time. I think they are better than stroopwafels.
Deswegen verwundert mich Dein Kommentar so. Für mich sah das wie die klassische Touristenfalle aus. Das ist ein Essen, was ich mache wenn ich keine Lust habe zu kochen. Schnell, preisgünstig und lecker.
We went to Utrecht in March and loved it, but it looks so much more lively in summer! We need to to back, it was my favorite city. A great mix of old town and modern near Tivoli concert hall without feeling like its lost its charm.
You should totally visit Dordrecht! Its a smaller city near Rotterdam, but its so nice. And while you’re there, go to Coffeelicious (for breakfast or lunch). The food there is amazing! My favorite is the chicken panini.
The bunny at the end is "Nijntje" or "Miffy" in English. She's the main character in a series of picture books for toddlers. Her creator is called "Dick Bruna" and he's from Utrecht. The little label said "Ik ben niet voor de verkoop", meaning "I am not for sale". Probably because it looks like the employees at the bookstore had sown the yellow book onto her hands (being Dutch and having seen a lot of stuffed "Miffy's", I have never seen one holding a book, usually it's just different fabrics or costumes). Also, frikadellen and kroketten (or bamischijven, kaas soufflés etc.) would be doable to bring home with you on a 3 hour home journey, as long as you put it in the freezer as soon as you get home(I mean, Dutch people are sometimes in a similar situation when combining shopping and grocery shopping if they visit another village or city, then it's not uncommon to have those items being outside of a freezer for 3 hours as well).
I live in a satellite city of Utrecht. Always a pleasure to cycle to the city centre to meet friends and have a meal or beer with them. Sadly you have missed the mannepis chips. The are the best
My favorite split pea soup dish. split pea soup, roggebrood, dik roomboter, Gouda kaas with grove Franse mosterd. But hey. If you have another favorite split pea soup dish. Vrijheid blijheid people.
OMG....I'm from Utrecht. This video is nice....'but' (like always, hahaha) in Utrecht there are other places in the city and the food is awesome! Those places are Utrecht. Broodje Mario, Broodje Ben, Bond & Smolders, Dimitri petit, Sirtaki, Bistro Madeleine, Djakarta, Baba, Kaddour and many more! Utrecht isn't made by the big campagnes like Hema or Febo. Utrecht is different. Utrecht is Chez Jacqueline. After 40 years Chez Jacqueline closed, but Utrecht is Utrecht and Utrecht is Chez Jacqueline... look for Skaveren. Skaveren on RUclips and Chez Jacqueline. That's Utrecht! That's the food we eat in Utrecht. Not Hema, not Febo... Utrecht is a Mom & Pop shop city.
Best walking advice in the city-center: Along the Oudegracht (main old-canal) from Nijntje Pleintje to Ledig Erf and back, each way on the other side of the canal. And go around (full circle) the old city-center next to the Singel (it has several "streetnames") a nice mix of parks and architecture. If you don't like the long walk and want to shorten it, go towards the Dom-tower, you can see it from everywhere.
How the hell you gonna visit Utrecht for foodtasting and didn’t taste THE ONE THING Utrecht is famous for in the Netherlands foodwise: BROODJE MARIO !!
I'm from Utrecht, I was probably paddleboarding on the Oude Gracht that very day! So nice to see bloggers appreciate the city 🤍❤ That little rabbit at the end is Miffy (Nijntje), an Utrecht icon and famous world round! Her label reads: "I'm not for sale!"
Okay, say these English words: Duh Crowd duh Blunt Belt Spur. And now "De Oude Muntkelder" using the same sounds. Duh Owduh Muntkelder. That's Dutch pronounciation of the vowels:). wait, Why do you make "Munt" sound like "Moont"?
Don't go to Hema! WHO advised hema? You go to hema for rookworst tompouce and birthday cake. I live in Utrecht you should have told us. Chinese supermarket would have been fun, Amazing Oriental. Dapp friet store, Loetje steaks, Restaurant Kartoffel (German food), Broadway American steakhouse, rent a boat, so many options... or go to the wall foodexplore for unlimited food ayce preisleistungsverhaltnis, broodje mario, broodje bakkerij bart, rijsttafel, ( i wouldn't recommend utrecht five guys, tgif, Cinnabon or hema). But sooo many good options. Best is to eat on a boat.. get something to eat and sightsee. And the falafal store right across the hema also is very nice.
Honestly you should only go to HEMA (pronounced as "hey-ma") for their warme worst and saucijzenbroodjes. & please don't go to FEBO, that stuff is only good as compost. Try a regular classic "snackbar" instead, the food is so much better. Oh, and if you like Indonesian food try the Soto next time from that same brand as the Randang you got. And don't forget the fried unions from that same food section as a topping. Ok, I think I'm done now.. :)
15 euro for a pancake! You could have a big pizza that, or 4 portions of kippling. Utrecht is the best, go to cafe belgie, oudpothuis ( jazz bar ), or the boat, for a smoke 👌
It's Héma (heyma), not Hèma.. And yes, Utrecht is unique with it's canal-sided restaurants because of the old lower cellars converted (not to be found in places like Amsterdam)..
I would've never recommended Hema. Only for their tompouces maybe. I do like the fact you don't show the netherlands only as the land where you can only get fries and bitterballen (or other fries stuff)
I dunno what it is with Americans how they pronounce words like "Utrecht" or something that ends with "sch". The "ch" is silent. Same as parmesan which they all, all the time get wrong. There is no "sjjjj" sound in it at all. And don't judge food in the Netherlands according to your own standards. A pancake is what it is in The Netherlands, not what it is in the US. It can not be all of a sudden a dessert because it fits in your profile. Not everything is measured according to US (mediocre) standards. Remember, 99% of the food you call your own, is stolen from Europe. And it is not toasti but tosto with an [o], not [oa].
0:39 I never ordered pancakes in a restaurant, but I like them homemade. A cheap, fast and easy meal. I usually make savory ones with bacon and maple syrup (no cheese though) and sweet ones with just marmelade/ jam on top. I eat 3-4 for a whole meal and it costs me what? 3-4€ at the most. You paid 13-15€ for a single one? What the eff!
@pinkhope84 tompouce is de one with two cookies with some sort of cream or pudding in the middle (don't know how to describe better) and pink glace on top sometimes it's another color
If you ever want to do a food taaour of Antwerpen, Belgium I am your man! I will take you to all the good places that serve authentic food! No costs it would be my pleasure. You could even stay over... Just a train ride away! Or a car ride if you prefer that! Serious! Consider it! I will show you Flanders is more than Chocolate, Beer and waffles! So MUCH MORE!!!

@@svenmondena9088ik woon al 24 jaar in Kanaleneiland en het bevalt prima. Altijd grappig om hijgerige media te zien schrijven dat het een “ghetto” is lol.
Looks like another successful trip, it's so lovely and quaint in Utrecht. Thanks Phil and Deanna for taking us along, see you soon!
Love ya guys. Killing it as usual. Thank you.
that kinda looks like the rivverwalk in texas minus the bikes no wonder its a popular tourist spot probably reminds the europeans of their home
You go to hema for : rookworst, kroket and tompouces (pastry) als their saucijzenbroodjes are great..
Whent to HEMA and did not try the rookworst. Shame, shame.....
Rookworst or hotdog at hema u guys took the wrong dishes… if you dont know the popular dishes ask the people who work there
Maastricht and/or Valkenburg area bike tour next? Have fun!
As a dutchie i love watching these food tours in new cities!! :)
You will go to hell for calling yourself a Dutchie. Sorry
How different those canals would be in Sitges, Catalonia
Hema is not even the best not even close you should have visited kanaal straat
Pancakes from the supermarket are most of the time straight from hell!
I love your videos me personally im also from the Netherlands you guys are so cute and also ''nog een goed weekend he!''
Dankjewel! Wij hopen dat je dit weekend iets lekkers eet!
@@DeanaandPhil I sure will! And dont worry google did this time🤣🤣🤣🤣 (By the way you guys should try the Hema rookworst wich is a delicious smoked sausage i get it almost every week)
Try learning how to pronounce the city that you are visiting,
I think the comments weren't clear enough: the hema is known for it's rookworst en it's tompouce. They even have shirts and bags etc of it 😂
And the stroopkoeken I would recommend for next time. I think they are better than stroopwafels.
You have to go back to the HEMA for a “Kaasbroodje” it is soooooooo good
HMMMM never heard the " Niederlandering" I was always told it is " Hollaenderin ".
Deswegen verwundert mich Dein Kommentar so. Für mich sah das wie die klassische Touristenfalle aus. Das ist ein Essen, was ich mache wenn ich keine Lust habe zu kochen. Schnell, preisgünstig und lecker.
@@memories511Holland is a province, The Netherlands is the whole country.
@@lumieredeux you believe what you want, I believe what I want and I think you are full of prunes.
@@memories511I don’t know about the prunes, but Utrecht is most definitely not in Holland. ;)
Hema is only for broodje rookworst. Their food is all dry
We went to Utrecht in March and loved it, but it looks so much more lively in summer! We need to to back, it was my favorite city. A great mix of old town and modern near Tivoli concert hall without feeling like its lost its charm.
You meed to try a ‘kapsalon’
It is very dutch
For the next one, try to visit an ‘Amazing Oriental’ supermarket.
Maybe fun to do a comparison with what you got in Düsseldorf.
Amazing Oriental has expanded into Germany. There it is called "Go Asia". At least in Berlin there are a number of them.
you should come to groningen or assen somtimes
Wowie the soup is quit expensive though!
You should totally visit Dordrecht! Its a smaller city near Rotterdam, but its so nice.
And while you’re there, go to Coffeelicious (for breakfast or lunch). The food there is amazing! My favorite is the chicken panini.
Did the sign read “kipstuCkjes?” Because if the C was added, it was veggie chicken!
Hema is famous for its 'rookworst' and 'Tompoucen' thats also typical dutch.
I love people eating new foods.
I’m not one to comment much and I like you guys a lot BUT!!!! The Netherlands 🇳🇱 ROMANTIC???? 🤣🤣 you made your audience laugh! Hard!!
Hema you say "heeeeymaaaaa" is know for the tompouce and rookworst
As kids we joked that it’s “Hey, Ma!” Like you’re telling your mom she needs to buy you something. :)
Oof, gonna have to go back to hema (hey-ma, not hemma) for the rookworst cause you missed out.
€ 15,- for 1 pancake???? Wow... 😳
daar wil ik ze ook wel voor verkopen.. zullen we morgen een pannekoeken resteaurant beginnen ?
Phil & Deana , It's a CHICKEN Sandwich !! NOT a BURGER ! Burgers are Ground Beef Patties, NOT Chicken Patties !!!
You both have to go up North, to Groningen and eat our world famous eierbal!
Wow the HEMA got expensive I think, (I haven’t been there in like 12years orsomething) it defeats the purpose of it I think 🤷🏼♂️
Best walking advice in the city-center:
Along the Oudegracht (main old-canal) from Nijntje Pleintje to Ledig Erf and back, each way on the other side of the canal.
Ü trè CH -as in Ich- t : Utrecht there is no -oe as in shoe- in Utrecht...in latin : Ultra Trajectum. It was a border fort on the river Rhine..
Pancake was good. You should use regular stroop with it.
Appelflap. They sold you the wordt from the oven.
What the eff!
did nobody tell you to get Hema Rookworst and a Tompouce? that is what Hema is most known for
What is tompounce?
@pinkhope84 tompouce is de one with two cookies with some sort of cream or pudding in the middle (don't know how to describe better) and pink glace on top sometimes it's another color
@@CarinaVlogs ok thank you, i was thinking about something savory. So it is sweet. Good to know 😀
If you ever want to do a food taaour of Antwerpen, Belgium I am your man!
Hema is pronounced Hey Ma 🤦🏻♀️ and you missed the best items there which are the snert aka pea soup, rookworst and tompuce 🥴
