shredderkrang Channel 4’s commentary is much better. You can blame Channel 4 for lack of coverage seeing that it’s not their fault. Bernie signed a deal with Sky so that they would have the exclusive rights to F1 in the U.K. which is why only highlights are shone now. It’s a fucking shame.
Wow Wow my man Coulthard why i start to watch F1 his helmet is so unique and his character is so decent, even i am Vettel follower now, no one beat DC charisma on F1 paddock
He's a very funny guy to talk to from what I've heard. For some reason he always gets interviewed by Louise Goodman (when F1 was on ITV), and he can get really flirty and intimate with her at times on TV (remember when he said in 2005 [Don't remember which race it was] "I'd imagine the pit button being your..." something I can't say on here for obvious reasons, but Louise afterwards sounded like she's trying hard not to giggle or appeal for his affection when she said "Thank you very much David.") I didn't see much F1 back then as American coverage was limited to Monaco, U.S. (at Indianapolis), Canada, and Brazil, but from what I've seen on the archives, F1TV, and on this RUclips platform he always does well with the press but can be sensitive at times.
I was (and am) a Mika fan, firmly on his side in the Hakkinen/Schumacher rivalry. And in the late 90s I didnt 'get' DC. Just thought he was sort of a seat filler. But since then, reading and watching his work and even some comments from Mika, I've changed my view nearly completely. I think he was a really good driver in his own right, just unlucky to compete with two of the greats in a era-defining rivalry, but more importantly the perfect team man that helped Mika and McLaren dominate. More importantly, he's a superb thinker and communicator about the sport, helps us lay people understand what it takes to do well in F1. And his thoughts on high level performance etc are fantastic for life and business.
This is the episode when I became a fan of Beyond the Grid podcasts! DC is a refreshing personality and love the way he made a smooth transition from F1 to Journalism and now to an Entrepreneur! Beyond the Grid is the reason I have started using Spotify app to listen to these podcasts when driving to work. I feel energetic and focussed and it's definitely a good way to kickstart to my day!
What a great way to start the year, with podcasts of 2 amazing F1 personalities. Now that you’ve covered two opposite ends possibly, can’t wait for what lies in between.
Love this podcast! Here is some suggestions of who could be next :) Paul Stoddart Flavio Briatore Richard Branson Rubens Barrichello Monisha Kaltenborn Paddy Lowe
TheNecromancer6666 “the better driver won” hahahahahhahaha if hes the better driver why was he battered for 2 entire seasons (and don’t forget it is only the first race, there’s a lot more to come)
@@PedroSilva-pb5dk Because he was in a new team, a new car and also told to let Hamilton pass. Think if Germany last year. Hamilton is a bad racing driver. He is an amazing Qualifier and very good a driving fast laps, but he is unable to have a clean battle. Every time somebody gets close to him he runs into them and blunders his way about. Think of how he blundered into Rosberg, or way back into Alonso. He is super fast, but get close to him and he crumbles.
Yeah can’t believe that Mercedes are making excuses for Hamilton having floor damage It didn’t even affect him at all he should just accept that Bottas was faster than him and you didn’t do a good enough job to win it
He's alright DC. When he was a driver I wasn't a massive fan as he seemed so corporate etc without much personality. But once he retired we've seen his personality a lot more and he actually seems like a nice guy and also down to earth still in many ways. That's what corporate F1 did to him (McLaren mostly), same with many drivers.
Is there such a thing as succinctly verbose? Brilliant interview this one, DC is very capable of letting us into his head and explains this beautifully with wisdom and great hindsight. I hope we get an interview with Billy Monger and maybe a special 'group' interview (various separate recordings) from F1 personnel (drivers, team bosses, engineers, FIA staff, stewards, managers etc) about their recollections of Charlie Whiting. RIP Charlie.
Great insight, the sum of knowledge in these interviews is awesome. Each of those drivers, having operated at peak human performance, are role models to all of us in some aspects of their life. Thank you for the interviews and please never stop.
Thanks DC; very open and honest. Did not know Ferrari apprpached him. These podcasts are bril. You have to get Eddie Irvine on here, Briatore did one with Nico which is must watch 😊
@shredderkrang They were magnificent! I always considered Schulz to be our Murray Walker, except for his tendency to scream. Granted, Murray could scream back in his day, as well, but there were some races where I thought Schulz was going into cardiac arrest any second now. Tanja Bauer is not with Sky anymore, unfortunately. Last I heard she went into the PR office over at Mercedes, following her compatriots Toto Wolff and of course, Niki.
@shredderkrang Oh indeed, that's actually the first thing that comes to mind whenever I think about Schulz. Other moments that immediately ring a bell are Monza 99 when Hakkinen threw away his car, Burti's massive crash at Spa 2001 and Schulz's and Surer's coverage of the crazy ex-Mercedes employee who caused havoc at Hockenheim 2000 (funnily enough, causing a Safety Car which completely ruined the McLaren Mercedes' race strategy). They don't make them like Schulz anymore.
DC confirming what has always completely obvious to anyone who isn't totally biased towards Schumacher and that is his teammates were contractually hampered from being allowed to beat him or compete on a level playing field at all. Eddie Jordan has revealed this as well. He saw the Ferrari contracts offered to drivers he was managing and every time there were conditions that they had to play 2nd fiddle to Schumacher.
As Coulthard admits here he left Williams a bit too soon at the end of 1995, Damon Hill says in his book that Coulthard could well have won the title in 1996 if he’d stayed but Adrian Newey went to Mclaren but the worst thing that happened was when he let Hakkinen through to win his first race and all of a sudden Hakkinen was a different driver and Coulthard struggled to beat him regularly. He was a good consistent driver who won every now and then but just didn’t have that last 5% to beat Hakkinen and Schumacher over a season but he relied on getting his car setup perfectly and when he did he could beat them France 2000 was a good example and San Marino 1998 but on the days when the car wasn’t handling that well he struggled more than Hakkinen and Schumacher to drive around the problem and they would beat him, that said he could have won the title in 1999 with no Schumacher and an inconsistent Hakkinen but crashed when leading at the Nurburgring, 2000 was a better chance and was a bit unfortunate in the last 3 or 4 races. He started 2001 really well but it fizzled out and Ferrari were by then developing their car and engine quicker than Mclaren and that was the end of his championship challenging years.
lol u gotta be kidding me, made way too many errors and was beaten comprehensively by team mates. Theres a few vids on youtube showcasing his blunders, I mean spinning from 1st posi on parade lap in Monza lol not champion material. Nice guy though
1greenMitsi remember when he crashed in the entry of the pits at Adelaide I think in 1995 while winning the race. Great guy though, just some silly mistakes unfortunately
You have missed the best DC story. My daughters went to the same school as him and when he won his first grand Prix everyone was very excited. However his French teacher said the following. "Aye, David has done very well for himself, but just think where he might be if only he had stuck in at his French"
Ive always wondered if David got on with Kimi even to this day. Problem is at the time you had such an age gap between Kimi and David PLUS the fact that Kimi is who he is compared to other drivers. Kimi sleeping during testing when he was young is similar to the backlash that Lewis gets for his jet set lifestyle. One could argue that both are signs of little motivation BUT the time sheets don't lie in the end

Great podcast, as usual 🏁😏
Do beyond the grid with Fernando alonso
27:12 What a brilliant story.
I've already mentioned this, but the absence of ads throughout the video made the listening experience more enjoyable. Keep this up! Great listen.
Kimi followed by DC...Man this season of Beyond the Grid is going to be just as great as the 2019 season itself
Great innit!
We want Rubens next. I want to hear his thoughts about Valtteri Bottas situation.
You mean the *Charles Leclerc* situation.
Bottas is allowed to win races and challenge for the championship, Charles at *Ferrari* isn't.
Kimi is next u have to w8
Bring Rubens to talk about Valteri? Sounds like silly reason to bring someone to talk about them
one of the intestring topics at the podcast.
@@deliriumbee4678 Bwoah will be a short podcast i think
Had the pleasure of meeting David a few times, he always had time for autographs and pictures through his career, a true gent! Great interview
DC has amazing communication skills and is fantastic at creating interesting conversations. Nice interview.
Great driver??... Mr. Average...
Yeah. No one thought he was a great driver at the time. Average, yes.
Fantastic interview. I have a deeper respect for DC, a deeply thoughtful emotionally intelligent person.

Coulthard and brundle was the dream team for commentary. Reminds me of when f1 was on the BBC at its best.
He does the post-race and post-qualifying interviews for Sky every once in a while as well especially at Silverstone
Wow Wow my man Coulthard why i start to watch F1 his helmet is so unique and his character is so decent, even i am Vettel follower now, no one beat DC charisma on F1 paddock
Literally his charisma is the best since he started racing. I suppose it has to do with his chin.
Such an honest, classy guy. No mystery why he was in F1 so long and with great team without necessarily being a phenom.
David and his obsession of organization and aligning things is my spirit animal.
