Hazy headlight damage is intense oxidation and micro-cracking caused by harsh UV sunlight and chemical stains in headlight plastic. Hazy headlight lenses reduce visibility at night and can cause accidents. Restoring headlights is easy! Greg walks us through the proper sanding, polishing, and protection steps needed to restore clarity to headlights, and keep them clear for years to come.

Don't fall for cheap bug spray or toothpaste DIY methods; they produce sub-par results that do not last. Follow our top detailing tips for a professional and PERMANENT fix to hazy headlight damage! Or if you don't have the time or equipment to do this yourself, hire a professional who only uses these professional methods to do the job.
Restoring the headlights you have can save you time, money, and the environment. High end vehicles can have expensive motors and HID components in stock headlights, which can cost thousands of dollars to replace the pair. Repairing headlights can prevent the need to tear apart the front end of the vehicle to remove and replace the units. Refinishing the headlights you have can also keep them on the car and out of the landfill, saving the environment from extra waste and plastic trash.

this video was done in 2015, yet in March of 2021 these methods work today. My headlights on my 2008 honda crv were beyond oxidized, at night you could not see much light from headlights. I purchased the products shown in this video and did exactly the way this video instructed and lo and behold! My headlights were restored ! They look like new headlights! Wonderful products and great instructions from Chemical Guys. Thank you Chemical Guys for the products that work and the instruction to put to use for yourself. Truly works.
Thanks so much for watching, happy detailing!
We’re also going to be using our high performance chemical guys water for this restoration
yeah, it fixes dead headlights, the best water on the market by CHEMICAL HOES
lol. The stuff works but it is imperative for thr vehicle owner to put a coat of wax on the lights after each or every other wash. The vehicle is being sandblasted by traffic in front of it. If the owner does not do that then the lights will fade a year after
@@stephenclark15 oō
Even a nice ceramic coat will keep them clear for a very long time
😂
Just a quick tip, pop that hood and raise it up. Saves a little tape, but more importantly allows easier access to the top of the head lamp. 👍
Kevin Vines wax is hard to clean up in engine bay
I was wondering the whole time why he didn't. As to the wax guy above... When did he apply wax?
@@davemc3650 cover the entire compartment with a sheet, no clean up
A little butter wet wax never hurt no one, available at chemicalguys.com
Kevin Hines pop the hood and pop a top on a 12oz ....
I just finished following this video and restored my VW Phaeton headlamps. The Georgia sun was playing havoc with them and the car is 14 years old. All the dead plastic came off. I took my time and used the materials suggested in the video. I even bought the polisher. They now look like new. I am absolutely pleased. This Phaeton just turned 89K on the odometer, just had her timing chain and belts done, brakes renewed and she is ready for another 100k easy. Don't let anyone say the VW Phaeton is unreliable. It has been my daily driver since new and now she looks fabulous thanks to the Chemical Guys. If I ever sell this old lady, someone will get a beautiful example of an extraordinary car.
Some comments indicate Chemical Guys are selling the world. I used the CG products I already have for auto detailing and it lasted 2-3 years before some oxidation returned. (No need to paint the headlights as other people suggest)
My Process: 2000 grit sandpaper wrapped around a sanding sponge, lubricated with any car wash solution. A 4-inch orange pad on a drill. I used a med-cut swirl remover (1st step) as the grit wears out, spritz with water and polish at high speed. Repeat the (2nd step) polishing with a finish polish such as Pro Polish 3n or equivalent. I finished the job with M-Seal and a coat of wax.
Most of these products are used for paint correction and general car care. Some headlight restoration kits come with a drill polishing pad and their brand of compound, machine polish for best results... This demonstrates you can fix your headlights by using most of the stuff in your detailing supplies without buying extra stuff. *No offense to Greg and the CG Team.
When I restore headlights I extend the painters' tape out 3-4" so that I can scrub all the way to the edge of the lens without worrying about the paint, and then when I use polishing compound on the headlamp I can also take the buffing pad all the way to the edge and not mar the paint, and then it also protects from any dripping of the uv-resistant clearcoat on the paint.
Not necessary you just gotta be more careful and k ow how to work the machine... I've been doing it for years and got their torq polisher and I love it to do headlights
@@jskallingtin It's not necessary until that one time you slip and wish you had put 30 more seconds into taping. It hasn't happened to me yet but I tape off further out regardless because it's good practice to do so.
Very good tip, also adding newspaper/newsprint around the light area into the body helps too. ;-)
Thanks for the video. I just restored my van's headlamps and they basically look brand new! My wife was surprised that they look that good again.
That's awesome a true transformation, thanks for sharing!
Those results were unbelievably awesome. Good job chemical guys
I’m watching all these videos all these years later and these homies be spitting game for free. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Probably one of your best video's ever, starting with crap and finishing up with like new!
This is what I wanted to see about headlight restoration. More information is always better. Great work!
Me too,, I checked how much new Headlight assemblies cost ! OMG !
this is so satisfying to watch
Got a call from a client who said they failed their MOT(UK thing) due to the headlights so went and had a look head lights faded, so a slight change to the way you did it, I clayed the light then V34 and then Jet sealed 109 to finish the head light and came up a treat and finished with V07 detail just to top it off. nice one for the guidance. improvise, adapt & over come. job done.
I wish my polishing could start music from outta nowhere

Im dying laughing
DatCarGuy310 , take it back, mine always does!
Why are you laughing? He's doing a great job.
Bringing headights back to life in this manner is what I have wondered about for quite a few years - not anymore with the help of Chemical Guys' greatest teachers.
Hi Kim, we made the impossible, possible!! It depends how oxidized the headlights are, some headlights can't be restored, especially when they are oxidized inside and out. You have to be very careful with headlights, you can ruin them because the plastic is very thin.
Thank you for alerting me. I paid very close attention as the sandpaper was being used, the amount of pressure applied, allowing the paper to do it's work rather than trying to overwork it and not being aggressive.
The part that you really have to pay attention to is when you polish with a drill, which acts like a rotary polisher. Unfortunately with a drill there's no speed control, you could actually end up burning through the headlights. It's tricky, but if done right could make you a wealthy man : ]
Chemical Guys Being experienced with a drill, it can be tiring to the hands and arms after a while with extended use and consideing that it is necessary to have good speed control, so thankful for your help, I can see that the right kind of equipment beyond a drill would be in both my and my customer's best interest.
whenever this guy does a video i almost fall asleep
G0NAGN relaxing voice or boring?
I did fall asleep.
Talks too mucking Fuch
I lie his approach
That looks really good. My BMW E36 headlights have these little raised pieces that makes it hard to sand and polish.
Thanks for the side hustle info
Happy detailing!!
When I did this I put the tape out more than 4 inches so I could make sure to sand all the way to the edge without worrying about hitting paint. Great job! They look fantastic.
Great tip!
Thank you for an extremely informative video. It was not too long. I couldn't get enough of the real time information that you were giving.
Hi! Thanks for the awesome feedback, we are glad to have you apart of the Chemical Guys family!
Worked like a charm on my 2008 Subaru WRX Sti. Thanks for the video and your products!
24:19, Pinkies out, like a Sir! Headlights came out great by the way.
This is the best video about headlight restoration on RUclips, I’ve watched plenty 😁
Thanks for the amazing feedback, we are glad to have you part of the Chemical Guys family!
I noticed there was a small neglected part closer towards the Grill of the car that looked a bit hazy bothered me 4 the whole damn video
Ivan Moreira indeed.
It was just the camera lighting.
Noticed!
@@BostonBorn That was irritating AF but you're correct, was the lighting.
I was staring at it too. But yeah I was watching on a big TV and it was just the angle of the camera and the lighting
I really like these videos! Makes me want to start a buisness out of this. Just restoring headlights, if you do that alot you get really good at it and can take on many jobs. way to many cars have this problem. all my 3 cars have glass headlights but some of my friends and family have plastic. Thank you for your videos, I love them! 1080p, kick back eat some snacks and chill and watch you do your magic!
I just have to say this too, the first song I didnt really like. But the last one was awesome :) Keep on detailing!!
He does a good job of presenting and explaining. I've watched others.
Thanks for watching!
Quick easy $25-40 . I do em all the time. Some will come out like new If damage is on outside. Some get tiny cracks in plastic and that won’t come out. Comes with experience but you can tell right off if it’ll come out or not. Gives cars a lot better appearance for cheap and quick
CG fan here and I have to say this is a great video guys. Great camera work and background music. The products speak for themselves really. Keep it up.
The '80s sounding music is freaking awesome....make sure y'all play it when you do your headlights. Just makes is rad...
We agree!
Happy detailing!
Chemical guys... you're absolutely amazing. Thumbs up to you all
Glad to have you as part of the Chemical Guys family!
Excellent job, I will get mine done.
When you used the second sandpaper, you should have gone up and down. Since the first pass you went left and right, you can remove the sideways peaks even better, since you're going in the opposite direction.
that isn't right , anyone that does any type of paint and body work knows that, all you do then is create more scratches , the idea is to take away not add, think about what you just said
I
@@jimmieroan9881 so true
No you go front to rear in a straight forward backward motion not up and down that would make more damage
Just got the kit did my headlights I'm so upset it worked so good now the rest of my car looks like s**t😅
It's just tooooooo good
Thank you I can see at night again
😄Enjoy your detailing products!!!!
I just use toothpaste, a coarse brush, a cloth, a sponge and some polish for afterwards. Works for me, so it should work for you and leaves you car with nice and minty X)
Edit, it might save you $50 as well, that is one expensive headlight repair kit, seeing as autoglym does one for $30, for everything you are selling plus the guarantee that they are a company that has been trading for the best part of eighty years! I have used many other products which are inferior, and every autoglym product I have used has been the bees guts!
This is some great info. Gonna order soon those products
NICE ! Its just like chemical guys knows what I'm looking for XD
i was just searching the net for products to restore my yellow faded headlights
Unreal , you are inspirational !!!
Happy detailing!!
Congrats on the 300k...win or lose its greats products and videos.
Looks great guys! Good job. I am going to do this tonight
Thanks so much for the amazing feedback and welcome to the Chemical Guys Family!
Great job Greg!!
Great video, I will be trying this at the weekend, thanks!
nice to see jeff in chemical guys nice job
I would really love to see a video of you guys using the drill with a good screw adapter so that we can see the proper technique.... my biggest fear/issue is controlling spin speed (since a drill doesn't really have a speed setting?)
use the cordless small ones, they have no more than 1k-2k rpms and you can blast it on max and keep it there.
Do you guys have a video explaining the different polishes you show, like the strengths of each one?
Hi! That's a great question. The V Line Series is our complete compound and polish kit. It is our most versatile and comprehensive option and the full system removes anywhere from light to severe paint defects. V32 and V34 are compounds and V36 and V38 are polishes. They are sequential so the lower the number, the more aggressive the product. Next, we have VSS which is an all in one product. It fits somewhere between V34 and V36 and is for the detailer looking to purchase one single product rather than two or three. Then, we have All in One Polish, which is a polish and sealant in one. Not only will it cut away those swirls and scratches in one step, it will also lay down a layer of sealant to leave your paint with a great shine! The video below explains the V Line series pretty well. Make sure to give it a watch and let us know if you have any further questions!

Chemical Guys awesome thanks
You're welcome! I'm also going to leave an article for you below that explains which pad and polish to start off with on your car when using the V Line series. It was really helpful for me and I think it will be for you too! Thanks for watching!

Chemical Guys cool, I only do headlights but I'll check it out
I was sanding the orange peel on my repainted hood and i accidentally applied too much pressure and left some scratches. i used 1500 and 2500 grit with wet sanding but can i re-sand the hood again with 2500 to try to remove some of the left over scratches? im scared of eating up the clearcoat, or would i be fine with just a light sand ? Thank You Chemical Guys
It's bugged me the entire video seeing the hood not popped lol
sohchx should of just took the headlight off 😂. It's more work, but you'll get the best results.
Great work!!
how hard is it to pop open the hood of that car?
Awesome video.. alot better than some of your others!!
Hi there, I’m thinking this same process would fix a heavily crazed Range Rover sport head light too?
- thank you.
Hot damn fantastic job with that headlight
This is the best head light restoration video. You guys are awesome. I am from India. Do you ship your products to India? Plse let me know.
Hey! Thanks for the amazing feedback! We recommend checking your local listings to locate a reseller near you.
Great video! SO, if i apply the JETSEAL and , lets say I take it a step further and apply a PPE film on light + ceramic coating. will this light last me another alot longer?
Hey Gianni! Absolutely, that will add a ton of protection.
Great "How to" vid … Thanks!
Decent helpful video for a change! Thanks!
I question the cost difference of taking my Jeep to you guys to do this vs purchase of a new headlamp assy. Seems like a lot of product I would have to buy if I did it myself. Plus the work involved.
Wich is the name of the song that starts on 18:55? Nice video!
I live in Southern Arizona and have been doing H/L Restoration for over 15 years. I have gotten to the point to were my customers want a maintenance free Restoration that last a verry long time.
What is your BEST UV Protective seal for H/L's that I can guarantee to last them a long time? More than a year.
Hey Don, thanks for watching. One item comes to mind, it's Carbon Flex because it's a ceramic coating that lasts longer than conventional wax and sealant coatings. Carbon Flex has a life span of up to two years, and is the best possible protection that we have to offer. You should still apply a sealant and wax to help prevent oxidation. Stay tuned Don, we've got more amazing videos on the way!!

Awosome video bt I have a question is it good to use rubbing compound on Head lights restore
Absolutely!
100k subs! Congratulations!!
The drill is better to use but they both work..the rotary drill is variable speed
if for some reason you took all the steps and still think it's a little hazy can you redo all the steps again? or is to much sanding bad for the head lights ?
really worked fantastic.
Wow. Just wow. Very nice!
Great job!
Happy detailing!
will you get the same results if you use the hex hand pads ?
Can you do anything to remove heat-related crackling in a plastic lens?
Just loved it
Before you put the sealant on, couldn't you put a 2K clear on the headlights to make it last longer?
Absolutely!
I want more protection on the headlight. Would durex work? If so, should I get the Performa variant?
Hi Pierce, we recommend sealing your headlights for JetSeal for up to one year protection, or Carbon Flex C9 for up to three years protection. We do not manufacture the products mentioned in your comment, so we cannot recommend them nor attest to their efficacy and quality. However, we do know that with JetSeal or Carbon Flex, you will be getting the best quality and longest protection! Thanks for watching, Pierce, and make sure to pick up some protection for your headlights (and car!) soon before the amazing 4th of July sale ends!
Chemical Guys cool you replied. I was joking back there haha sorry! Nevertheless great video! It fed my appetite to see dirty things back to life.
i have swirls on my rear lights can these be removed like this? Or is sanding too agressive?
Looks good
VERY cool track playing at 21:00! Is that a generic track available free from RUclips or did you guys use your own custom music? Thanks! Oh, and great tutorial by the way, thanks for the upload! :D
You said you use jet seal on the tires please explain thanks!
Hey!
JetSeal is only attended for painted, shiny or clear surfaces!
Happy detailing!
What grit of sandpaper is used for this application ?
Wow very impressed.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Will the headlights stay clear after the wet seal dries,I use other products and after I put the clear protectant on,after it dries it doesn't look as clear as when it was wet?
Amaizing.......
I want to know if there's a recommended clear protection film, like the auto paint protect film, will that be fine?
TOP MARKS MATE 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🎯🎯🎯🔥🔥🔥👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙂🙂🙂
Happy detailing!
Question: why not reapply clear-coat? It should last much longer than a sealant.
Can I take in my car to a chemical guys location, so I can have this done?
Many thanks for this amazing DIY. I've tried to restore my headlights at a shop but they used 500 then 1000 grit sandpaper which caused small scratches that didn't go away after polishing. After that I've used Wipe New which was great only for 3 months and faded again.
My question is: is it okay to sand the headlights again with the 2500 & 3500 grit sand papers again after doing all the mentioned above? And are you sure that will not be any scratches if it was applied correctly?
Hey, thanks for taking the time to watch this sweet video. It will, that's why you need to polish, and apply Jet Seal to protect the headlights
Chemical Guys Many thanks for the quick response. I'm planning to use Chemcial Guys materials but, just for final clarification, polishing the headlights after sanding and then applying the Jet Seal will remove all the scratches made by the 2500 and 3500 grit sandpapers? (Assuming applied correctly)
Sorry for questioning again, but I own a Mercedes Benz S Class and the headlights will cost thousands of dollars if missed up.
I'm going to make a video while doing the restoration so it can be a good reference.
Yes, just be careful and follow our technique and you should be fine.
Hey I purchased the kit and I know you say that it should be able to do 40 cars, but how do I reuse the sandpaper after I peel it off and switch to 3500. Also sandpaper says 2000 and 3000, not 2500 and 3500?
I heard the sanding kit works for paint to get rid of Orange peel if so what sand paper do u use frist???
The only thing i don't like is how he keeps referring to the damaged plastic as dead plastic. The plastic was never living. I am a perfectionist I guess.
skelitalmisfit12 That's what I was saying!!
Dead as in slain by UV rays!
Yeah it's just bad UV plastic coating...
Well, since plastics is a petroleum product and petroleum is made from dead dinosaurs......
The perfectionist didn't capitalize the 'I'. Nice.
Awesome as always CGs
Glad you like them!
Huge difference. I’m gonna buy some products
Happy detailing!!
How much pressure Is needed if I do it with a drill? I tried today with 800, 1200, 2000 but when I tried to sandpaper the headlights the drill moved all the way, pretty difficult and also happened with the compound, what you guys think? Really need help, did I miss pressure or was it too much? Or the drill has too much power? I am totally confused with what happened HEEEEEEEELP!!
Does this process work if my clear coat on my headlights are coming off?
It should because you're taking off the clearcoat anyways when you sand it
Yes follow the same steps.
It's not clear coat....it's dead plastic. ;)
The only thing that bothers me.... Is that Your shipping prices to Canada suck! lmao
I had my cart filled up with $90 worth and the shipping was like $70!!!
I mean, I'll spend $200 on all products and accessories, if only I had free or cheaper shipping
papitosabe Buffing pads, detailing brushes, polishes, waxes, all purpose cleaner. And probably a couple more things :P
papitosabe When I get the money I'll try it out... thanks!
The Creationman I agree... I contacted them concerning this issue last week. No reply yet. I also mentioned that amazon.ca has decent prices but relatively bad product range, whereas amazon.com has a lot of stuff but won't ship everything to Canada. Keeping my fingers crossed...
The Creationman check at eshine.ca its in Ontario and if you order for $150 its free shipping

What’s the life span of one sheet of your sanding paper? How many uses can we get?
Hi there! The sanding sheets can be used multiple times. We recommend using one designated sanding block for each grit.
can you do this by hand or do I have to buy one of these tools to start?
Im done i can't spend 28 min watching something that i can finish in 10 min. Nice job btw
I have hydroslick and hydrocharge. Can I use these as a sealer?
Hi Craig! Absolutely, use the Hydro Line for a durable layer of protection.
AWESOME 👏
After apply a final jet seal. What Did I do after a year? Do I need to apply jet seal again or start all over?
Interesting question. The JetSeal is designed to last up to 12 months before reapplying it again. Depending on the condition of your car, we do advise in starting the process again. Quick analogy: you wouldn't put lotion on a dirty body, you need to shower first before applying lotion and keeping your skin moist and protected. Hope that helps and thank you for being part of the Chemical Guys family!
So what u gone do about that dull border?
