    The C&O steam engines honestly need more love and appreciation, especially #490. It needs to be restored to operating condition and pull excursion trains from the B&O museum to Detroit. Do you like that idea? :)

      MrImpossiblyBlack I see your point. But regardless, think about what the following museums and railroad societies are doing to C&O #2716, C&O #1309, Reading #2100, and heck, ATSF #3463. There should be a group for the engine called "Friends of the 490". That would be cool, wouldn't it? :)

    Damn 490 is such a Striking locomotive, I recall seeing her sitting outside the roundhose back in the early 90s... while it would be awesomse to see her run again, I hope that she gets a righteous physical restoration at the very least. such a beauty.

      yes she is one of very few streamliners left, and I think the only of her class from the c&o that was saved or was it a b and o loco I am thinking of that they have in mount claire, actually I think I might be thinking of the P6 class that the b&o saved and put there it was one of the few late period locos the saved and it pulled some of the passenger trains, and they were going to save an em1 yellowstone, they say but some dumb yard guy sent it away and it was cut up before the em 1 could be recovered, almost makes me want to cry, also the fact that our town tried to buy a t3 loco to save we did not have enough funds, nor enough interest to save the old roundhouse, there was an effort but not enough money to do so, now all we have of the old days is foundations and the old freight shed as the museum, oh and the old watchman tower, it is thrilling though that the foundations are still intact mostly so they can be seen on aerial photos and sattilight, but the old shop area of garrett is wooded over and several spots are built over like the fire station is built on part of the old roundhouse, you can however see one of the parts of the old roundhouse stalls sticking up over the ground by the storage shed behind the fire and police station, but woe be to you if you trespass without asking as I said it is a police station and directly behind it is csx property though not too near the tracks and you can see something there too as well as a chunk of concrete that was there most likely from the roundhouse, I will be showing the remnants when I can and video it for youtube, I just have to get the permissions time to do it and right lighting, but the bits of the shops are there too and the outline of the power house, water storage tanks of treated water footer is there and the erecting shed and machine shop which closed in 1926, oh and the outline of the old car shop can be seen on air photos of the area as well as the office that sat next to it where the car department equipment barn sits now, the repair track though is where it always has been and two of the 4 tracks that would have went into the original 4 stall carshop go right over the foundation outline of the 318 foot building that used to sit there.

      It would be nice to see c&o 490 run again, but it wouldn't be the only operating Hudson. There are 2 in Canada, Canadian Pacific 2816 & 2860. Even though 2816 hasn't run for a few years and i think 2860 is down for its 1472 day inspection. I assume its the same I Canada & the US. But 490 would be the only operating Hudson in the US.

    The locomotive doing the moving has an interesting past itself. It was involved in a rear-end collision near Casner, IL in 1953, when it was nearly brand new. It was returned to EMD and reconstructed. It was renumbered to 6405 in 1957. The wreck killed the engineer.

    Wow. What a massive movement of engines at the B&O RR Museum. Brings back many memories of my brief 3 years volunteering there. At that time, the C&O 377 was considered the most likely restorable to running condition and, though the appearance is pretty shabby, all the working parts were there. Many comments made about restoring the 490 Hudson (formerly a Pacific) making it even more unique, the need is always for more money than a museum normally has to invest. Cosmetic restoration, while also expensive, is a more viable investment. The restoration shop on the museum grounds is best suited for that purpose and is doing a fine job with the resources given them. Overall, I'd like to say that this a unique and dynamic railroad museum having one of, if not, the most complete collection of early to modern rr equipment accessible to the public I know of.

    When I was a kid the C & O used to use a GP7 to switch out cars at Heiner’s Bakery in Huntington, WV. Sometimes the engineer would have us climb up in the cab and he’d talk to us about railroading and let us blow the horn. Hearing that sound brings back a lot of fond memories.

    I took a video of C&O 490 at the Museum back in April of 2019. I also said to the people in the North Car Shop if they are going to restore it back to operation. And then they said they won't. So they are still going to restore it in the North Car Shop at the B&O Railroad Museum today. And 490 is probably the only streamlined Hudson that survives today. There are a lot of Hudson's out there, while this one is streamlined. It was also my first film at the B&O Museum too.

    Something didn't seem right about 490. 377 and the fireless shunter made the steam locomotive's signature "gasping for air" sound when not moving under their own power, but 490 didn't as much. I heard it once and that is it. The bearings also looked like they were sticking a little, not sure if that's normal or not. I did talk to one of the guys there saying when 460 came to the B&O she was in need of major mechanical repair. But I'm glad 6405 got to come out and play!

    • @engineer6325
      @engineer6325 8 лет назад +3

      In the late 70's, when Ross Rowland traded the Reading 2101 for the C&O 614, they gave the 490 a mechanical inspection before deciding on the 614. Their report basically found while the 490 is restorable, the engine is in fact in need of an EXTENSIVE overhaul. Basically, the 490 could run again, problem is the biggest obstacle is there is no place to run her since CSX is currently anti-steam. Also the lack of gasping for air might have something to do with 490's poppet valve system, as opposed to the conventional valve gear found on the other steamers.

    • @mattsmocs3281
      @mattsmocs3281 8 лет назад +5

      +engineer6325 she could do NS but 611 would be front. 490 in no way could do a heavy mountain run like the R&N or steamtown engines. So a private line with long distance and high speeds would be its only hope of running.

    • @renegadeoflife87
      @renegadeoflife87 7 лет назад +1

      What about in the Chicago area? The amtrak right of way there was suitable to let 765 be clocked by a passenger's GPS at 72 MPH.

    • @engineer6325
      @engineer6325 7 лет назад +7

      That route is a good choice, 490 would be perfect for it. Problem is GETTING 490 to that area. There are a couple of reasons for this. One, te B&O Museum is steeped high in CSX turf so getting them to play ball to let the 490 out won't be easy. A solution to this could be to take the 490 and base her somewhere on more friendly track,(ex: NS), BUT...that's assuming the B&O Museum would allow you to do that in the first place. Museums can get very protective of their collection, so what could happen is while they would allow someone to restore the 490, they might request the engine to be kept in Baltimore. I'm unfamiliar with the management of the museum so I cannot say. Sure, they were open to letting go of the 1309, but they might have a different opinion about letting the 490 go. I don't want to sound negative, in fact I'm very hopeful the 490 will run again someday, but the simple reality is it will be a challenge.

    • @renegadeoflife87
      @renegadeoflife87 7 лет назад +6

      Most likely 490 would have to ride behind a diesel across CSX right of way to more friendly routes like NS trackage. They made 765 do this on the 21st centry limited when the planned route called for it to deadhead across a CSX line that NS had usage permissions for.
      So it might be best to just tow it from Baltimore to a shop in more friendly areas to be restored, perhaps St Louis or even Ft Wayne.
      From there it could possibly be steamed up to Indiana or Iowa, where the tracks would be straight and flat enough to let it perform as intended.
      Its a shame the northeast corridor is becoming run down and I have no idea what condition the former NY Central routes are in. They had lots of Hudsons and Pacifics there that would make this engine be right at home.

    Though her scheme was originally Orange when streamlined just because orange is my favorite color, but 490 can keep the yellow paint being the only yellow steam engine, because who needs Orange boilered locomotives when I already have a Orange skirted 4-8-4 that is Daylight 4449 when it reminded me of J class 611 being a red skirted 4-8-4, they along with yellow skirted NC&StL 576, and green skirted CNR 6400 were known as "colorful skirted 4-8-4's" or "Rainbow skirted 4-8-4's".

    Would love to see that C&O streamlined steamer restored to working order (Yes, we all know, $$$. And where would it run, anyway? Would CSX permit it to visit, with liability concerns and whatnot. Dream on.)

    That GP sounds like either he’s running it with the handbrake set or with a full set on the independent. Should be no reason to need notch 3 or 4 to move while empty.

      Sometimes you have to use the throttle with a light set on the independent brake to avoid jerking cars around.

    Would travel many miles to see this under steam. If only CSX was as heritage friendly as NS, and held an event similar to the ones at Spencer where streamlined steam & diesel of CSX heritage could be proudly shown off.

      @Wayne Gray Yes it has been great following the Big Boy restoration. I hope to make it to the B&O museum someday.

      All flip flopped now, NS has turned its back on N&W history and has sold most of its historical stock, The Southern R.R. people caused that, now CSX seems to have had a change of heart and is getting back to their history, The N&W is dead thanks to Southern....serves the....themselves it seems

    On #6405 are those lights on the top corners on the back on the locomotive? Just curious because I’ve never seen them on.

    When they move big steam locos like the 490 with diesels, why don't they just couple straight to it? Just curious.

    Im reading the comments and a lot of people really want 490 to run. There is a lot more that goes into that than just getting it to run. Where is it gonna run? Who is gonna run it? Who is going to find the people to make new parts when needed, where the heck is the money coming from. And on and on. 490 aint running again. Hate to burst the bubble. You need people with millions and millions of dollars to get something like that off the ground. Not every single last steam engine has to run again either. I I know most of the stuff in the PRR legally cannot ever run again due to their rules regarding preservation. People should look into the bigger picture. Ed Dickens explained what it took to make the Big Boy run again, go watch that video, its quite informative on what needs to happen when a steam engine is chosen to be run again

      Most of the pieces in the collection that were damaged in the collapse have been restored and returned to being out on display. MOST of them. There are still a few pieces that require attention, so donations are welcome.
