- In this episode of my series “ Walks in Sussex” , I take a 4.5 mile circular walk starting & finishing in the pretty village of Stoughton which is located 6 miles North West of Chichester in the South Downs National Park. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car by the village green and have a quick look around Stoughton, starting off with the delightful church of St Mary's. I then walk North through the village, past the Hare & Hounds pub towards the footpath that takes me Eastwards along the Monarch's Way. (I actually take a small detour North before I go on to the Monarch's Way, to check out the source of the River Ems!).
My route East takes me up Stoughton Down where I get to enjoy some stunning views back over to the West. At the top of the ridge, I make another small detour to Blackbush House & Goosehill Camp (a small prehistoric earthwork that was still in use in the iron age … although I couldn't actually find it!).
I then head South through the Kingley Vale Nature Reserve to my next destination - the 4 Devil's Humps (Bronze age barrows) where again there are some magnificent views, this time to the East.
My homeward journey takes me on a downhill track back to the village and I pass a memorial to Boleslaw Wlasnowolski (a Polish Fighter ace that fought in the Battle of Britain and tragically was killed when shot down by a German fighter in the field by the track on 1st November 1940).
My final destination is the Hare & Hounds pub - which surely must be one of the most “dog friendly” pubs in the county.

Very enjoyable lots of history lovely church beautiful walks fantastic scenery.
Thank you Craig. The views from the top of the Kingley Vale Nature Reserve really were stunning.
Great as always.. You know that I love the views from the South Downs. Wonderful day for a walk. Keep up the good work. Glad that Logan got a blackberry or two. Thank you both.
Thank you Lavinia. That was one of the last opportunities for a "pit stop for blackberries" for a few months now!
Amazing walk in the countryside with stunning beauty
Thanks Keith. A really pretty part of the county around there. :)
What a lovely old church. There is something about these old churches in England that draw me to them. Just love seeing them. Wonderful walk Dave and Logan.👏🏻
The church looked very pretty in the Autumnal sunshine that day.
Another great walk. Thanks Dave.
Thank you Jeff. :)
Another great walk Dave and some terrific views. That scene of you walking up the barrow with the dramatic cloud backdrop. As a screen grab that would make a great album cover!😀
Thanks Mark. My Gopro was starting to struggle a bit with the low light when the clouds appeared!
A very deserved pint!!!
Always a great way to end a walk!
Wonderful walk ,thankyou Dave!
Thank you Gareth. :)
Kingley Vale. Spent many a happy hour there as a kid looking for spent ordinance around the range. In the 60s I used to help a mobile green grocer, Mr Potts. The Saturday round used to finish at the Hare and Hounds. Mr Potts used to have a pint and a pie in the bar and I guarded the van with a ginger beer and a packet of crisps. Happy Days lovely video.
Thanks David. Yes, I have happy memories of the Hare & Hounds as well. I used to walk at Stoughton regularly about 30 years ago & it made for an excellent "final" destination!
Happy Friday Dave, and of course Logan!
Just currently watching your Frogram to Hampton Bridge vlog currently but look forward to watching this afterwards! Hope you have a fab weekend! 😊
Thanks and indeed thank you for watching. :)
Lovely walk Dave, may well have to try this one out, love the views! Happy new year to you both 🍾🎉
Thank you Nick and indeed a Happy New Year to you as well!
That was a lovely walk Dave, I enjoyed it. That's when I miss old England living here in France but we have a beautiful country to visit too. All the best to you and dear Logan.
Thank you Martin. :)
Very pretty area, Dave. I'm usually a little sceptical about river sources. As the water table goes down, so the source moves downstream
The views around there, particularly at the top of the Kingley Vale Nature Reserve, really are quite stunning.
Lovely walk Dave, and "The King Of The Trig Points" bags another! Though I don't think he had much of a view from his vantage point this time. Well earned pint, and crisps for Logan. don't know if you can help Dave, on a day trip to Arundel a few years back we had lunch at the pub in Burpham. My question is, is it pronounced Burp-ham or Burph-am. Wish I'd asked when I was there 'cause it's always bugged me. Thanks
Thank you. Funny you should mention that as I was doing some research this week for a walk that I will be doing in the Summer at Burpham! I believe it is pronounced "BUR - FAM" (the "PH" becomes an "F"). Confusingly, I think that the hamlet next to it, called Wepham, is pronounced WEP- HAM!
@@DaveFord Thanks Dave, you've scratched a long-standing itch!
Another lovely walk full of beauty and interest. Four legs definitely seem better than two when descending humps! Does Logan jump up on the trig points by himself when you 'bag' them or do you have to lift him up there?
Thanks Jean. I have to lift Logan on to the Trig point - there is just about enough room for him on top! Yes, my knees are not designed for hills these days!
Long history of war there, good to know!
Yes indeed. Very peaceful there these days!
