Antifa is not an organization, it is a movement of people with a common goal, but not a common method, hence why some are peaceful, and some believe fascism must be fought with force. Saying we make a distinction between black block and ANTIFA is only partly true. A christian or jewish group, which is against racism or Nazis wouldnt label itself as "ANTIFA". This short term is used by one specific set of groups, whiche share the same ideology. Christian groups for example wouldnt be against police or capitalism or pro violence (a la "punsh a nazi") per se. They are against facism, but would not label themself with the short term "Antifa". They also dont run around in black clothes, not showing their face.
Ironicly I have seen Antifaprotestors (with the Antifa-Flag) in England standing besides Islamists spitting on british soldiers, during the homecoming of british troops. So many times they are only against a specific form of facism, but ignore other forms, because it would hurt their world view.
When you see the "Black Block" you also often see Antifa flags. because "black block" is just an umbrella term for extremist far left groups. The name stems from the clothing an masks. For example during Hamburg during the G20 meeting. People seperating the different groups of Black Block or saying there is no "the" Antifa are partly right but partly wrong. Most of the times they seperate them only, if one group does something, which would show the movement in a bad light. The problem is: Other Antifa groups are not disavowing other groups, who are violent (all ANTIFA groups seem to be). One of my professor was beaten up during a lecture, because he wanted masked ANTIFA protestors, who wanted to "out" a right wing student, to leave his room. This was defendend online by other ANTIFA groups. With ANTIFA the no true scotsman fallacy comes to mind.
Anitfa is a group of masked white people commiting violence for some deeply misguided sense of justice.

And the rest of us are still waiting for the republican party and their media to disavow neo-Nazis, the KKK, and the rest of the white supremacist and xenophobic groups which have been around far longer and actually paved the way for antifa. Of course, that means actually standing up to them, not just saying "there are good people on both sides" or "they did bad things back in the day" while regurgitating their rhetoric. Those groups exist pretty exclusively on the right, among the GOP base. There's a reason for that. Antifa and BLM are relatively new, though the Black Panthers predate them, whereas the cause of white supremacy has been dominating this country for centuries, even to the point where it was once popular to claim affiliation in order to get more votes as a politician. So yeah, to respond to many of you commenting about antifa being bad and history repeating itself, you're right in that antifa is using tactics that have been used by the Nazis of Germany, and others throughout time...just like the neo-Nazis, KKK, and others have been doing ALL THIS TIME, except for, you know, the cross burnings, rape, murder/lynchings, etc. If you don't think those groups are still up to their old tricks, you have blinders on. Antifa is wrong to use violence, but until you address the violence, thuggery, and legitimate terrorism that has been perpetrated by the people who have been hiding in your ranks for the past 200+ years, you've got no moral high ground to stand on.

I assume people who really don't know about US history tend to say "DURING THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT, THEY WERE NON VIOLENT!!!"
But they often forget how long the civil rights era was (1955-1968) and how long no one cared at the constant discrimination. And that was after they were shown on live TV being BEATEN, BITTEN BY DOGS and HOSED by the police (Selma 1965). Only then, did the rest of America begin to march alongside black people.
I'm not saying that violence is productive in change, but to say only being non violent will bring change, is a highly misinformed myth.

King told his marchers to stay peaceful, and the brutality of his opposition was displayed for everyone to see. Yes, the protesters still got beaten, but they actually won the culture and the politicians to their cause.
Also keep in mind that Antifa actually has it's roots in history, during the Weimar Republic in Germany in the lead-up to the Nazis taking power. So yeah, they don't exactly have a history of success.
I agree to an extent. Martian Luther king's non violent approach while did a lot and finally ended segregation, he wasn't the only that helped make those changes. Black Panther party and Malcom X, powerful and influential players in the civil rights movement weren't entirely peaceful. And honestly I don't blame them either. My only encounter with anyone who identified as Antifa. A very relatively benign encounter in contrast to what others have experienced... brief conversation with someone in social media. He eventually made a veiled threat, ("let's meet up") to me then blocked me. Prior to that, the conversation went something like this. .. "So, I am Antifa, therefore anyone I oppose must be fascist." That was his mindset. Philosophically bankrupt argument. In his mind, HIS chosen methodology somehow proved MY ideology. It would be like saying, "I oppose green gremlins, so if I throw a brick at you, you must be a green gremlin." ... "I am Antifa, I oppose you and throw a brick at you, therefore you are fascist." He was making this suggestion to someone who grew reading Geroge Gilder, Thomas Sowell, Milton Friedman, et. al. Free markets, market economy, etc. , in his mind is now... fascist. Any protestors, no matter who they are, have a responsibility to make their point peacefully. When protestors become violent, especially violent against innocent bystanders or counter protestors, or destructive, it is time to arrest those protestors and treat them as criminals. It is a strange connection, but a lot of people that are big into anime are very very right wing. The reason I find it so strange is because the mentality is often in direct opposition to the messages in the media they're consuming but they somehow twist it around in their heads. For instance, there have been a lot a lot of gay and lesbian anime, and the same groups that watch those the most avidly are some of the most extreme in their expressed hatred of gay and lesbian people. I don't know if they get off on it because they think of it as taboo or what their deal is. Some are commenting about Japan being very right wing and regimented. That may be true, but anime is a major outlet of escapism to a degree. The characters in anime mostly do not behave in a regimented fashion and are constantly breaking the mold and defying expectations. You might expect someone that is right wing to be for putting more regulations on anime to reduce the "fan service," but these people are often all for more and more of it. As opposed to actual right wing politicians in Japan that have imposed some stricter rules in the past. E.g. right wing anime/japan site SankakuComplex that provides denigrating commentary of its own readership and subject matter. It's like they're all trying to say they're marginally less of a basement dwelling loser than the next guy. I suspect that plenty of regular people enjoy anime as well, but in the current environment it seems as though they are the silent majority per se. Or a silent minority. It's hard to tell since they don't say anything and the conversation is dominated by far right hypocrites.

Antifa does far more than just "protect clergy from nazis" - also, these Nazis weren't even fucking beating up clergymen. The fights they got involved in were with the Antifa protests of them. Hell, this isn't even being about mirror images.
