The old saying "Less is more" - for the last 12 months I have been saying to myself and my playing group "70% power for this drive" and have watched my handicap drop from 14 to 7, hitting straighter, longer and more fairways. Less is definitely more.

Really gave me something to think about with the jump. I have been working on some speed training through the TGS with Clay Ballard. Now I am 66 years old but very fit and strong and when I started, my average play swing speed was about 83 mph and my max was about 89. Using some of the drills and techniques he teaches and over a two week period my max has gotten as high as 98.2 - I have a GC3 for gathering data. The idea of the speed training is by increasing your max speed your normal play speed will increase as you start to use new muscles and your brain learns to incorporate them. It seems to work and is fun and gratifying to see my swing speed increase so much even at my age. But I sense there are still some easy yards to be gained.
One drill I have not mastered yet, but which has made the biggest difference, is a power squat move - similar to the jump move you demo here. I struggle getting the right feel and timing. I suspect with a mat that would be a lot easier. But at least watching this has given me some ideas on what I can try. My goal is a 105 mph or more max with a normal play speed of 100 mph and I am confident I can do it too. Great video Mark - thanks for the ideas and inspiration.

I've been playing with the changes you made after Coach's video and the things you were explaining seemed helpful in my own quest for a more efficient swing. Long before we had all this tech I knew timing the forces in the swing were essential. I always believed that the outliers I hit on occasion that soared past the rest came from accidentally timing things perfectly. Wish I had access to all that tech to accelerate the learning curve, but I'm at least not without resources. A range is out back and the course is 3 blocks away and I play free so I'll keep at it and have faith that I'll stumble into a more efficient swing soon enough to be able to still make use of it. 😂 Just keep the video's coming. They help.

Great video, and can’t wait to try this out! I’ve got the exact same swing as you - lots of depth and really stretching my arm across my chest for a long swing. Timing the jump is going to be game changing!!

I went to the big shoulder turn, very very little arm movement, what I call the Jon Rahm swing, about twelve months ago, and I picked up yardage everywhere. For me, it feels much more like my hockey slap shot where the back entirely moves the stick with almost no arm movement, and also like my tennis forehand, where the racket is held almost straight back, far away from the body, and then you squat down and jump into the ball. Nice video Mark.

Using gears they've measured how far that left arm needs to go across your chest. The left arm abduction understanding has increased my speed and my students speed by ~3-7mph depending on how poor they were doing it. It also let's you feel that strange "stretch" where it feels like arms going further back and pelvis is going forward much easier. Cheers.

  • @PetSKi67
    @PetSKi67 2 года назад

It doesn’t look too much different on video, but the feel os from different hemisphere and the compression at the ball is enhanced a lot.
Having a shorter back swing loads the coiling while preparing to ”jump” early enough. It’ll become more compact and the Snead-like sitting down on the thighs stretches the abbs sideways and they’ll fire against the stretching momentum of the arms and club accelerating it more than from too far pampered back swing would ever allow us to do.
Hands and club mass goes up, body goes down to counter that momentum and when in downswing the club starts to go down, you put force into the ground resulting the pivot point to raise up as the clubhead goes down helped bu the gravity and multiplied by forces of the legs straightening.
Basically Mark, you are now telling is, that your swing has been a look-alike, but only now you’re getting the dynamicks into the motion!

Very beautiful indeed. One possible suggestion: your waggle could be softer, that would translate into an even smoother overall motion (Percy Boomer), even though it looks quite close to excellence already. Percy Boomer argues, that if the waggle is too lively, you will favor the shoulders rather than the lower body.
The secret behind all of golf is emphasized by Ernest Jones - his explanation of what swinging the clubhead actually means.

There is an old saying from swim training - slow is smooth, smooth is fast. It seems so appropriate here. This is also something I am starting to work into my swing, when I get it right the swing feels slow but the results say it is actually faster.
I am finding that my best results are when the feeling I have in the downswing is the torso and arms pause at the top of the backswing and I concentrate on getting the hips to rotate by putting as much as I can into straightening the lead leg as early as possible in the downswing - I need another lesson with my coach because I suspect I am still not early enough

  • @dsc-nr5zy

Yes, even Trevino thinks it's only possible to change your takeaway, the rest will fall into place. You can't control a motion that takes 1/5 of a second (the downswing). Best to tidy up your setup and the first motion off the ball and the results will just come.

I've been thinking about the jump a long time. My guesses so far. The jump is at 90 degrees to the direction of the club head. Orthogonal forces don't affect each other. Lifting on the handle may be torquing the club to cause it spin around your wrist to increase. When the shaft gets horizontal you start to lift the handle. I really still have no clue.

I've been playing a "half swing" since I started playing when I was about 7, I am completely self taught and hit it quite far, relatively not compared to a tour pro obvs, but compared to peers, everyone had always told me "Oh you would hit it so far if you swing the proper length you could do long drive". They can never understand that I generate so much power from the ground by swinging "short" , power they can't generate from the ground, this is then coupled with me hitting the middle more often because I have less to line up and less chance to get off line

    Less exaggerated Bryson jump?
    Very useful 👌😎

Lexi Thompson, Bubba Watson and Dame Laura Davies all have the ( jump/push away ) at the bottom. All three mostly have both feet off the ground at impact. I've really tried to copy Lexi's push/jump away for the ball at/before impact and when it works/is timed it's a long ball for me. It's very hard to replicate though.

So Mark, do you use this same approach/swing with your irons? Do you find you are more inconsistent? Or will that just come with practice? More moving parts more variables to time? Super intrigued

When will you be fully committed to taking this feeling on to the course do you think? would love to see the SG comparison between bomb ball Mark and pat pat Mark from yesteryear. Especially as its a sequencing adjustment rather than a technique change.

Nice work Mark. With you experimenting with a stronger grip whilst also making the swing changes, are you now also tweaking ball position and tee height to see if it has an effect on shot shape or efficiency or are you doing everything through backswing thoughts and ideas? If the ball move further forward does it give you split second better efficiency as contact is slightly later? Love the content

I really want to and have a lesson right now to see what I can do, though right now I am seeing improvements already in terms of distance than I did before. I am really curious though to see if I could use those forces in much better way than I am. Unfortunantly I don't think really anyone here where I live has really all that tech that would tell that story.
Anyhow it is gonna be an intersting journey to follow your game in paralell with my own and see where we are going to end up, keep at it Mark :)!

What you are saying about the only way to influence your strike is to change the first part of your swing makes a lot of sense, because when you hit the ball, your brain is still behind you. Its the "if you jump out of a window, you are dead before your hit the ground." thing. Your brain takes like 40 milliseconds to process what is happening, so when you hit the ground, your brain is still 20 feet in the air. The downswing to impact is maybe 250 millisecond, and it takes maybe 150 milliseconds to make a change . That's why duffers like me cast the club when we take away outside, our brains make the club move, but we can't control it mentally, it's way too late for that. I think of it that in the backswing, we might have a little time to make small corrections (hopefully we get it right) but once we pull the trigger, it's too late to make any changes on the downswing, so we basically are in a panic and look up hoping for the best. Good luck with your swing changes, Mark!

Mark, little confused here... i get the jump part for the transition/downswing, why are you saying you changed the sequence of your backswing? I can't understand what you mean by that.

Hey Mark, Can you quantify the ballspeed gained when making this move late versus on time?
Like what was your average and max ballspeeds before using the verticals at the right time, and what are they now?

Early testing is suggesting 159- 163 with new move more 162-166.

As a 6 4” skinny armed and beer belly having dude, I don’t think this is that hard. Literally just swing with everything you got. You’re good enough to square it up if I am… and I am. I also drove it 320 (with some wind behind me) last round. That’s with so many things wrong in my swing. Anyways… love your content mark, definitely one of my favorites

What was your baseline club head speed/carry before this experiment?

  • @jackflash8756

Looking at your horizontal grf graph pattern, it seemed your braking of translational movement changed dramatically too. I suspect both the earlier timing of braking and increase in vertical grfs are linked. So how do you know whether it was the earlier 'braking' that was the major contributor of your increased clubhead speed?

Great video Mark! It would be interesting to know if the same move/feeling could be used in the iron swing and if you could still have a downward angle of attack whilst ‘jumping’? PS I remember when 262 was a good drive for you now ur carrying it 284 #bomber 😆 keep up the good work 👍
