    I know this is an old video but thanks for keeping it up here. My starter is smoking just like this one, i didn't know those segments could be the problem. I now know what to look for when disassembling. Thanks!

    G'day John, not to many workshops have a growler. Not to many mechanics have ever heard of a growler. Pays to run a scriber between each copper segment (across the insulator), this will clear any copper plus drop the insulation below the copper segment giving less brush wear. Excellent video.

    I went to a trade school and was shown a growler and was never told how they work.
