A catchy yet simple track off of John Mayer's "Bigger Than My Body - Single" that never really surfaced anywhere. For those of you who don't know, this is a Radiohead cover.
It takes quite a musical and genius ear to hear one of Thom's more obscurred and processed pieces. Enigmatic and robotic and yet John hears all of it and more than likely the original melody Thom heard in his own head. He takes this with his guitar and voice and takes what I called a near robotic song with eerie lyrics and makes it perfect in melody, still haunting and still keeping the rhythm perfect in the guitar. The song still holds all the same mystery and yet John has revealed a layer. Genius.
I seldom trust internet lyrics and someone stole my booklet....bad luck on me. Still - awesome cover which Thom likes quite a bit. I like it better than the new cover of "Creep" from who is it Fiona Apple - which if so surprises me for her to not make it even better - but if someone else instead of Apple someone let me know. Thanks In Advance!
Joe Schoenberger he probably (not saying he for sure did) got the riff from when radiohead played it live before kid A came out, they incorporated guitars that sounded a lot like this, john mayer maybe got it from that and pieced it together
idonteatcheetos THanks for the info - should've known RH would've done it prior - but since I had never heard it broken down like this - it was sheer wonder to me. I really dug it as well as the original of course. It just showed me and hopefully others that electronic has a soul. Thanks again for FYI.
This is one of my most favorite musical discoveries of all time...for years and years I thought that I'd heard all there was to hear of John Mayer and I also thought that no one else out there appreciated this weird little song from Kid A in the same way I did...and here comes my favorite artist ever covering that very song by another one of my favorite artists. Yet he still has that uplifting, happy tone that we all know and love while we also know damn well what song he's singing. Such a beautiful melody that sounds eerie in one light but shimmering with brilliant clarity and optimism in another. One of the greatest covers of all time I think.
I've been a Radiohead fan for years. This is one of my favorite covers and I almost like it as much as the original. I love the guitar riff. It captures the same dream-like mood of the original, just not as surreal.
One of the best things I have ever seen was right before John Mayer blew up and got super famous.. he came out for an encore when he was playing in Detroit and played a Stevie ray Vaughn cover people screamed for his other songs... so he played another cover and people started to boo and he gave them the finger during the song and kept playing lol
Everybody is comparing it to the original version, which means it's good enough to be compared with the original one. And that doesn't happen in most radiohead covers.
This, unknownst to me at the time, was my first introduction to anything Radiohead, I was a sophomore at a HBCU, and surrounded by hip-hop day in and day out. John Mayer and Norah Jones were a good change of pace, and I'll always have a fondness for this cover, but it wouldn't be until 5 years later, when In Rainbows came out that I took a deep dive into Radiohead - 15 years later, still haven't come up for air.
this is a genius cover. takes the original and makes it better or comes at it from such a different angle that it's practically an entirely new song or genre
Im 16, but love mid 90s music. Ocean Colour Scene, Oasis, The Verve, Radiohead etc. A few weeks ago i discovered john mayer through the song "clarity" and thought it was brilliant. But this choice of cover is brilliant, and he tones down his voice in just the right way. Its fantastic! Cheers for the upload!
Radiohead is the band I always come back to and listen to, probably my favorite band If I think about it. But I'm impressed John Mayer even covered this song.
Listening to this really helped me appreciate the beauty of the original. Sometimes getting a Radiohead track involves solving a sort of puzzle until your brain can click into the song. Same goes for the strange piano rhythm in Pyramid song. It feels strangely uncomfortable until they resolve it with some drums about a third of the way in. Really happy they've brought both Kid A and Amnesiac together.
Better ? music is pure, free, emotions. I wonder how all those comments can even be made by people who were drawn here to enjoy music. do you guys compare sunsets with others in your memory ? or just enjoy the one happening...
I never really care for Mayer's music, but damn, after this song, one of my favorite Radiohead songs, gonna start paying more attention to this guy...AWESOME COVER!
+chaferbud I agree with you. But at the same time, this is Mayer in his earlier and more pure form; covering one of his greatest influences and doing an amazing job at it. Brings back memories of me listening to this cover.
I have been a HUGE Raidohead fan for a long time and a John Mayer fan for just as long. I love that he covered this song. John's take on this is beautiful.
I wouldn't say he's underrated, he's clearly perceived as the best guitarist of his generation. When Eric Clapton says you're a fucking master on the guitar, I think that says it all.
i know what you mean. its hard to believe a new guy so young and talented can be a blues phenom and a guitar god, especially the same new guy that came on the radio singing "no such thing."
The key to covering a song is not trying to sound like the original artist. That's what makes this great. Stripping it down. Just singing it. He wasn't trying to sound like Radiohead. So I really love this.
Kid A is my favorite cd. I think it's fairly remarkable that Mayer takes a predominantly electronic song (and a great song), makes an acoustic version of it, and the result is a superior song. this is more than just a fantastic cover. we've got heads on sticks
I actually respect John Mayer for even bothering to cover such a random, experimental Radiohead song. Most people tend to go for "No Surprises," "Karma Police," "Creep," etc.
I couldn't stand John Mayer when he was really popular in 20002/2003 and I loved Radiohead back then, I still do.. I heard this cover version once in 2003 and I was surprised that John Mayer covered it. Now that I'm listening to it again, I'd have to say this is probably just as good as the Radiohead version, in some ways it's slightly better. I have the Kid A album, so I've heard the album version many times.
Stan Smathers Let's hope for your sake that your life as a cretin brings you joy, and I neither make or study art, which immediately puts a rather large hole in your ignorant argument and feeble ranting. You are dismissed.

I just don't understand why you then start ranting and raving like that.
Stan Smathers Calling Radiohead talentless hacks is your opinion but I think it's a bit extreme, OK, their music isn't for everyone, but I personally think they're far more talented than, say, The Black Eyed Peas or Lady Gaga or most of these other pop singers and bands.
Stan Smathers hi! why don't you upload your own music so we all can hear it.... i guess it should be a "masterpiece" ... they are a lot of good songs of radiohead (how to dissapear completely, staircase, might be wrong .... and more) with a beautifull lyrics and an amazing history behind each one. but the most important fact is = if you don't like radiohead, why are you here?... each one of us have our own likes and dislikes but if you dont like it, it doesn't mean that's something shitty. so please, upload your music, share your masterpieces with the world. bye, nice day Mr hater.

Acoustic can have it's own atmosphere, even though it's not neccessarily atmospheric. I think Animal Collective's cover of Nirvana's On A Plane also has this quality.
I've never really been a mayer fan. but i LOVE this cover so much. he took Radioheds song and even in simplifying it made it his own and so beautiful... and now i know what the words are!
aarongtr180 I like this more, but that's because Im more fimiliar with his voice/style and things :) I don't think you can ever say a cover is 'better' than the original, just different! But you get me
wow...im a big fan of radiohead and this sounds pretty sick...any true radiohead fan can appreciate other artists covering their songs especially when it sounds this good. nice cover john mayer.
Of all the radiohead covers, this is the only one I've heard that *is superior to the original* . It has such a strong melancholic and Nick Drake vibe and *I LOVE IT*
yea I know but the simplicity of this is nice to me. I guess if it wasn't a cover it would be truly amazing because the underlying progressions are unique and beautiful.
I had no idea how great this cover was going to be. I originally only listened out of curiosity, but he really did this song justice. I don't like John Mayer at all but I listen to this song all the time. It's so hauntingly beautiful.
also, when comparing musicians of different styles, a very large portion of comparison is opinion. so, John Mayer, the blues guitarist, is my favorite.
I have to say that the two songs are so different it's hard to tell they are the same song. They are both amazing songs. John Mayer does a great job of transforming the song into an acoustic version.
Can't believe it's been at leatt a decade since this was a thing. I still would love to see him play this. I have the eerie suspicion there's a perfectly orchestrated loop probably maybe even played live for this take.
john mayer shouldn't ever piss you off. he's just a mellow chill dude who creates fucking awesome music.. he plays lots of different genres so he's got something for everyone kind of
Loving both Mayer and Radiohead, (Radiohead more) I gotta say I love this. It takes a song written on a 505 sequencer and adapts it to a acoustic. The result? A simple tune that merges the lovable simplicity of John Mayer's pop with the darkness of Kid A. It's a mixture of two artists that make a result I've never thought would work/be possible. I love it to death.
lol, apart from the fact that JM did it first. But being a JM fan I actually heard this cover first, then listened to Radiohead. Awesome song by them, but I like Talk Show Host even better... It's takes guts to do a Radiohead cover, cause it seems to me there are alot of merciless RH fans out there. I'm glad he did though, cause Radiohead are freaking awesome. Thanks for the upload!
lol, there's quite a few that like all of his music. Brilliant muso, love all his stuff... thanks for the upload, you can download this off of Limewire if I remember correctly
Whenever people translate Radiohead's electronic work onto acoustic, I realize just how great they are at writing interesting chord progressions.
Happens the same thing when they put a whole orchestra to play the song, your mind gets blown of how great the song actually is.
Absolutely

As far as RH covers go, this kinda genius - and its one of their most complicated and oblique songs. But its clear why this was so easily overlooked.
Really interesting to hear this done by a 'human' given the vocals on the original. What a tough song to cover - but what a great effort.
Because it's Radiohead and not some unauthentic, crap band.
There's a few live versions where Thom sings it regularly. I assume he's heard those before making this cover.

Can't believe it's been at leatt a decade since this was a thing. I still would love to see him play this. I have the eerie suspicion there's a perfectly orchestrated loop probably maybe even played live for this take.
This is a brilliant cover. John Mayer you won me over 🖤
i am so proud, just gained a lot more respect for this man. and i already respected him a lot before.
john mayer shouldn't ever piss you off. he's just a mellow chill dude who creates fucking awesome music.. he plays lots of different genres so he's got something for everyone kind of
Loving both Mayer and Radiohead, (Radiohead more) I gotta say I love this. It takes a song written on a 505 sequencer and adapts it to a acoustic. The result? A simple tune that merges the lovable simplicity of John Mayer's pop with the darkness of Kid A. It's a mixture of two artists that make a result I've never thought would work/be possible. I love it to death.
his cover's leads me to new discover of the old ....thank you John!
lol, apart from the fact that JM did it first.
John even got the drumming rhythm right with the muted guitar strumming in the background. He made a good cover.
lol, there's quite a few that like all of his music. Brilliant muso, love all his stuff... thanks for the upload, you can download this off of Limewire if I remember correctly
