John actually said that this song started off as a guitar practice thing where he actually tried to see how hard of a guitar thing he could play and sing over at the same time.
He posted this randomly on his blog one night about a year and a half ago and he said it was only going to be up for a short moment. Luckily somebody grabbed it to post. On the blog he mentions the iPhone text in the background and how raw it was. But like I said, it was random. Take it for what it's worth.
Oh my gosh, I know exactly what you're talking about! I came across his blog when he posted this song and it's always been one of my favorite songs since then...
this song is hard enough play on a technical level, but seriously how could anyone ever play this without just bawling in the middle of it? everyone has that someone they want so bad they'll go back on the things they believe. what a beautiful song.
There's a certain beauty to this version that I just can't explain. It sounds raw and filled with emotions. As a guitarist, I always pay attention to what John is doing on the guitar, and in this version, he changes the arrangements for several parts AND manages to change the singing rhythm/pacing as well. You can see it simply comes naturally to him, in the sense that he's able to do it with ease after so much practice in his life. Guy is a genius.
This is a great song to learn because it also acts as a great exercise. On the one hand its a difficult riff to get down since its pretty involved with a few different techniques that go into it. On the other hand it is very good practice to learn this song and sing over because there is so much going on whilst singing. I am still currently working on it, give it a shot though. Very rewarding when you slowly start to get it down. John Mayer, you are one hell of an inspiration for me and I thank you for it!
For sure! I believe this was the inspiration for the song, actually. I've heard him say he wrote this just to see if he could play it while singing. haha
@@Ash-fm6ym I'm doing this too, and a key aspect is to listen to the song over and over, then slow it down and listen. Get the picking perfect first. Then, you can take one part of the song--in this one, that would be the starting riff on the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th frets. Figure what he's singing there and try to replicate it on only that part while playing along with him. Do this for all the parts, and then try singing and playing without the video. For this particular song tho, the singing actually helps me get better timing on the guitar, even if I can just manage to hum it at the start
Mayer always has this knack of keeping his studio songs simple, so whenever he does it live or does a different version, its always a different version. And god fucking damn it no one version of any song is a let down.
I remember when I went through a heartbreak and this song especially helped me cope. All his music did, somehow his lyrics always found a way to play as a soundtrack to my life so far. Just a lyrical genius and the guitar...always makes me feel peacefully whole.
My sons, gave me my first John Mayer CD for Christmas before they Ghosted Me. I played it over and over until I could sing almost every word. “...for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” Amen
watch me attempt it... It took me a while to be able to sing while playing.. like you said it's difficult. I see a lot of covers where guys can't sing and play at the same time. You are smart for recognizing the skill involved.
with enough practice u get muscle memory, not really that hard to sing and play anything if u practice enough. the guitar rift is fairly simplistic as well but w/e
Here I am at 7:09 am on a Monday morning listening to this song with my eyes closed. Screaming internally about a boy who has no idea how much I want him. “I want you so bad I’ll go back on the things I believe”
" I want you so bad I'll go back on the things I believe. There I just said it, I'm scared you'll forget about me" This verse gets me every time. My all time favorite John Mayer song.
DonMichael it’s the tri-tone ringtone. If you have an iPhone you can find it when you go to your text tones in your settings and scroll all the way down to classic. Once you tap on classic, scroll all the way down and click on Tri-tone!
Awesome song. It has something soothing and at the same time incredible pain. It reminds me somehow to Neil Young, don't know why. Thanks for uploading.
The greatest thing is that when history comes knocking, we'll be able to say we were hearing this music when it was created not just as part of someone else's archive. So good!!!!
@941254 For real, it's John who received the text message. He recorded that version in his appartment and wrote on Twitter that we can his cellphone beep in this version. ;P
This... isn't a song for cuddling. It's rather sad. It describes exactly the thoughts one gets after a disastrous breakup at the worst time possible. But I guess... to each his/her own. It's great song regardless of what it speaks to you.
hahaha this is so mazing and packed with the rawest most velunerbale emotions yet all i want to do is laugh,. . . maybe my laughter is my responses overcompensating for my insecuries that are always broken by Johns sharp penetrating lyrics. . . .i mean the pain that he went through is so eveident in this song yet he leaves the listener with nothing but a feeling of warmth. . . .thats a what fucking songwriting is all about !!
@nesselegant08 I think that's always his intention for his music. It's absolutely amazing, and I love his skill in both singing and playing guitar. He's an amazing individual, and I'm thankful that he's even making music for a career. Plus, he's coming out with another album, and I can't wait.
To play the live version of Neon note for note with johns exact two finger claw style percussive thing in the right hand would be a true test for any guitar player of any level.
most artists have lawyers for copyright protection, John has his two hands.
This is clever! To the top!
Sam Brobst well technically it’s his fingers... more specifically his thumbs
Best comment I've seen today!
John be like "Yeah good luck recreating that one"
Paul Davids: Hold my Dutch beer.....
John actually said that this song started off as a guitar practice thing where he actually tried to see how hard of a guitar thing he could play and sing over at the same time.
true legend!
Sweet child o mine started the same way too
I believe it. I think a lot of artists “discover” something they like by just messing around or practicing.
I tried playing and singing this at the same time, it's way to fucking hard. I mean the guitar is fine but singing along is just too fkn hard
I have tried time and time again and my brain just can’t process singing this as I play it

For the rest of the days that i have on earth, i will never forget this song. What a sound.
I listen to this song constantly. I loooove it!
Same here...it really is a part of me
exactly my feelings and thoughts abt this song
4:33 that chord change is just perfect
Such a painfully beautiful song

I think 30 years down the line whatever happens in my life I would probably be back here listening to this version.
Played this at an open mic last night. some woman went "yes", my work was done :)
this song is so hearbreaking. I love the acoustic/slow versions rather than the rushed version.
at :22 listen closely and his phone goes off haha. I think thats really cool that it makes it even more personal
for you to even be able to hear that is insanely impressive
he said that the most perfect takes are the ones that get interrupted thats why he didn't stop when his phone went off. Boy was it perfect.
I'd like this comment... but it's at exactly 22 thumbs up
***** in an article he says it was his iphone
A similar thing happened on 30 Seconds to Mars' "Alibi". Someone was washing the dishes during the recording. Love love love these kinds of things.
Can't decide which version of this song I like more ._. seems like I could listen to both of them all day.
honetly, I like this one better.
Well. I guess I like this one a tad bit more! :)
that last “I’m scared you’ll forget about me” is haunting

What a beautiful version!!! Sounds better than the CD record!

How are you singing this? I mean what's your process to sing complicated pieces along with complicated guitar

Blazed IV XX you have no idea what you’re talking about
This is probably one of the only songs that make me tear up before the singer starts. Incredible melody and lyrics
this is one of the most beautiful things i've ever heard.
Young and full of running
Tell me where's that taking me?
Just a great figure eight or a tiny infinity
Love is really nothing
But a dream that keeps waking me
For all of my trying
We still end up dying
How can it be?
Don't say a word, just come over and lie here with me
'Cause I'm just about to set fire to everything I see
I want you so bad I'll go back on the things I believe
There I just said it, I'm scared you'll forget about me
So young and full of running, all the way to the edge of desire
Steady my breathing, silently screaming,
"I have to have you now"
Wired and I'm tired
Think I'll sleep in my clothes on the floor
Maybe this mattress will spin on its axis and find me on yours
Don't say a word, just come over and lie here with me
'Cause I'm just about to set fire to everything I see
I want you so bad I'll go back on the things I believe
There I just said it, I'm scared you'll forget about me
Don't say a word, just come over and lie here with me
'Cause I'm just about to set fire to everything I see
I want you so bad I'll go back on the things I believe
There I just said it, I'm scared you'll forget about me

This is one of my favorite songs by him. It is my favorite on that album and this version I really like...he is so talented. Love him

This my absolute favorite song of all time. I would cry if i saw this played live.
This song and Dave Matthew's The Stone have been the most difficult songs I've ever learned to play and sing at the same time
Braeden Brown The Stone is just insane
It's a doozie for sure!
OH. MY. GOD. So beautiful and full of emotion... What a poet!!
This is just fantastic!!!
anyone else hear his phone go off in the beginning? anyways, such a beautiful song

Elmer A. Mares definitely!!! And it goes off right when he starts singing “young and full of runnin”
@@HGilby8 Nice!! This is one of my favorite songs ever.
What was the original ringtone? Couldn't find it and I'm quite unfamiliar with old iPhone tones :(

It’s crazy how this song and Rick James’s “Fire & Desire” describe the same emotions, invoke the same feelings but are so different.
Great sound!!!!!!!!!!
