Operation Management: Chapter Six: Facility Layout

Layout refers to the configuration of departments, work centers, and equipment, particularly moving work (customers or materials) through the system. This section describes the main types of layout designs and the models used to evaluate design alternatives. The need for layout planning arises both in designing new facilities and in redesigning existing ones. Facility layout can also be defined as a decision about the physical arrangement of anything that consumes space: a person or group of people, a teller window, a machine, a workbench or workstation, a department, a storage room, a stairway or aisle, and so on.
