    This jelly looks beautiful!! I’ll try the jelly next time I have some apple scraps!! Thank you for the video 💕
    I made 14 quarts of apple syrup from apple peels and cores this last week. I made 2 batches of applesauce and saved the peels and cores. I covered them with water and simmered for 20 hours (you don’t have to simmer them that long at all… it just turned out that way at my house) ….. I then ran the apple mixture through a thick layer of cheese cloth (don’t squeeze the cloth at the end or your syrup will turn cloudy)…. I then put the apple liquid back on the stove in an uncovered pot and brought it back to a simmer and reduced it quite a bit…(several hours) …. I then added equal parts sugar (measure your apple water and sugar carefully) to the apple liquid and simmered it for 20 minutes, I do wish I would of simmered for a little longer as the syrup was a little thin, I think 30 minutes would be perfect!
    It made 14 quarts and other than the cost of the sugar, it was totally free! It’s the best syrup you’ve ever tasted! Awesome on pancakes and waffles or in tea as a sweetener. It also makes an amazing dressing by adding equal parts of olive oil, apple syrup to equal parts apple cider vinegar…. Then add whatever spices you like! It’s delicious!
    Happy canning everyone ❤️🙏

      Trina...WOW thanks for that info, the syrup sounds wonderful! ...you must have had lots and lots of apples to get 14 quarts.

      @trina7274 2 года назад +1

      @@HerHomesteadSkills yes my mama has a few apple trees in her back yard. I made 16 pints of applesauce, in addition to all the syrup ….. I’d say I had roughly 15-20 lbs of apples…give or take, probably closer to 18… just going by prior experience, and by how many bags we filled.
      The apple peels and cores filled up 3/4 the way of a normal, large stockpot…. Quite a bit!
      I hope you are able to try it! It’s super easy and so yummy and the best part…..(besides it being super yummy) is that it’s free besides the sugar!!
      In the past I have also saved my apple skins and cores slowly, over time, in a bag in the freezer. You can also add peach peels and pear peels and cores to that too! You could even throw in the tops of strawberries even! The options are limitless really!
      💕❤️🙏

      Trina...apple trees in the back yard!!...awesome that you don't let them just go to waste... It's still apple season here, so I might try some and I still want to make more apple vinegar with the scraps too..amazing...so apple scraps = Vinegar, Syrup and Jelly...such a useful fruit!!

    Isn't knowledge awesome! I watch this and was filled with bittersweetness. I had lived most of my 68 years in the mountains of the mid-atlantic area of the US (zones 5-6). In 2014 we moved to Florida to care for my ailing mother. She hated the cold winters of the Appalachian mountains and had lived in Florida for about 20 years. There are wonderful advantages to living here, the best is you can grow food all year long. But there are some things that just do not grow well in the heat and humidity. apples & regular potatoes. That is the two things that I took for granted. Both were extremely easy to grow, use and store. And neither do well in Florida. (Mother passed on in 2017 and we have decided to stay put for the time being while the chaos rages on.)

      Gidget Hale...I might miss my apples too... but ....you can grow Lemons, pineapples and..FIGS and I could plant my Bay Laurel in the ground there, and never have to uproot my rosemary and grow all sorts of stuff all year round...yup I live in the zone 5-6 area of Ontario.

      @@HerHomesteadSkills there is always a trade off isn't there. I didn't realize how many apples & white potatoes we ate on a regular bases until we moved down here 🤣 the up side, is sweet potatoes have no "season" down here. They will take over the yard if you don't harvest them. Dig a tuber up, cut off a piece of the vine, stick it back in the sandy ground, in a few months you get another sweet potato. One of our neighbors has been digging sweet potatoes continually out of the same patch for 10yrs!

    Yaaaaay!!!!
    I brought home buckets of apples. We are about to begin processing cider and sauce and butter.
    I work at a garden nursery we have a huge 100 ft tall apple tree .
    I have been giving them to customers by bucket loads to feed the horses and mules and donkeys and hogs and every other animal that had been rescued in our area.
    Now we just closed for the season and there's still enough to feed a small army up on that tree.
    I went out and bought a couple of old antique applesauce grinders and I got my Apple peeler from a long time ago but there's just so much..I needed a couple ideas.
    We are Dixie fire survivors and there is no food anywhere our forest are annihilated and the bears are right at my back door.. We now dump them out in the burn scar to lead them back out into the forest. The deer and the rabbits and every now and then I see a raven fly over my cabin carrying an apple and it warms my heart knowing where it came from LOL
    I'm excited to try this . 😃😊😃🌻🌻🌻I had alot of coffee today! I bet you could tell 🌻😃🌻😊😆

    I have half bushel of apples to process, starting today. I've usually boil lightly all scraps then let them cool in frig. Once that's done I strain scaps into my juicer machine and make applesauce and juice that's left gets canned for drinking juice, might need to try some jelly this time around. I never add sugar, but for the jelly I'd probably do 1/3cup per 2 cups juice. Not a big fan of sugar. Cinnamon would probably taste good too! Thanks for your work,and tutorials

    I jarred up 15 quarts of apple pie filling today, so I thought I'd try the jelly. I appreciate that you had a more precise method with a rule of thumb for measuring. Well I cheated anyway and got out the pectin. I don't know if it will set better after it cools in the jars or not. I will just have to wait and see. Do you use a pressure canner at all? • @HerHomesteadSkills
      @HerHomesteadSkills  2 года назад +1

      Roxanne Sears...perhaps just my impatience, it seemed to take a long time to set...and lemon juice helps jams and in this case, apple jelly to set... It likely would have set just fine if I had allowed it to simmer for a longer period of time.
