yeah its actually hated because it didnt follow a proper plot related to its prequel and you can this as a spin off film. the plot is like that where no one expected. so yeh it kind of happened like that

If you like racecar films then you should definitely see Rush. It’s a movie about on of the best f1 drivers, Niki Lauda who had an accident and came back
Character writing wise/mcqueens side: pretty well done, good lessons, if a tad simplidtic, nothing wrong with that though Spy action/maters side: the spy stuff is pretty fun, it forced the animators to get creative with cars having spy gadgetry, which is always fun, but it suffered in the writing department, with how mater is ignored when trying to explain what he is, varying degrees of luck throughout those segments, and characters pulling out the solution to whatever their problem is from thin air (gee, how lucky the spy with an electric taser was, a, tied in the perfect position to barely hit the controls for the clock, b, was facing the right direction in order to do said thing, c, they were set up in that specific way to die instead of something else, allowing the escape)(or how about a character needs to move extremely quickly, so they magically become a jet plane car out of nowhere, with no set up at all, and with a throwaway line to try and explain it away to cover the dissonance) All in all, an enjoyable film, that has extra action for the cost of writing elements Remember, being the worst of enjoyable movies in terms of writing still means youre an enjoyable movie And honestly, it speaks to the talent of the studios that this is considered their worst and it still has its great moments

The funniest thing is Pixar tried to forget Cars 2 so you can never see any events from Cars 2 in Cars 3 as it is a direct sequel to Cars 1. According to Pixar, Cars 2 never existed.
cars 2 is arguably better than the OG if you don't connect them and consider them stand alones but it sucks as a sequel having nothing to do with the original film.
