Jazz Musician Reacts: BTS - 'ON' (MV + Tonight Show Live) | Down the BTS Rabbit Hole
#BTS #ON #TonightShow
Hey guys, if you want to join my small Twitter group to help me find the best live performances, bounce ideas around for my channel, and just nerd out about BTS music, just message me at the link below.
Your message should include:
- Name
- Age (if you're comfortable)
- What Country you're from
- How long you've been ARMY
- What video brought you to my channel
- If you play any musical instruments and what experience you have
- Anything else you want to include (inside jokes, ARMY knowledge, favorite BTS song, how much you love Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, etc.)
If I don't respond, it doesn't mean I didn't see your message! I'm just keeping this group very small now and I may reach out to you in the future as my channel grows 😀
twitter.com/andrewbergsax
Usually I'd say (probably others, too) you watched the wrong MV, but since you also watched the performance of the Tonight Show, it's kinda ok.
Hi, I don’t think you have your DM’s open? Well, it’s not letting me DM you at least
Message in your twitter? Because it says that you cant message your twitter account.
I just opened my DMs! I'll be honest, I didn't know that I had to do that 😅
@ONITOPIA Yeah, when I saw that the Tonight Show video looked very similar to the KM version I thought I'd mix it up and do the other MV instead
I so much enjoyed your explanation of Suga's rap section around the 9 minute mark. Although I am no musician, I never felt 'talked down to', and once you explained it, it became so much more understandable why his rapping is so compelling!
That's amazing and I'm so glad it made sense! This comment made me happy 😊
I loved this explanation too! The counting visuals really made the point clear! I also liked the details about the tempo change after the dance break. I've always "felt" it, but never had enough knowledge to isolate it and point it out before. I'm feeling educated!
the time signature concept and yoongi's deviation was very well explained visually, verbally and aurally
I'm so glad! I literally spent like 2-3 hours getting the visuals and music to line up in a way that (I hoped) made sense. Thank you so much for writing this comment
Totally agree! Great job Andrew!
@@AndrewBergSax agree great job!
I really like that you pointed out J-Hope’s rhythm when he raps. He’s also the dance leader in BTS, and spent years as a street dancer before joining BTS. I’ve heard it said before that he “raps like he dances” and I just love that metaphor and how well it fits Hobi.
Thank you! That's really awesome and I'm super excited to learn more about the rap line members because this was super impressive
I think you really see that in Hope World and Boy meets Evil.
@@AndrewBergSax Hi, Andrew. I'm new to your channel and am uncertain if you've already reacted to the video, "An Introduction to the 7 Members of BTS (2021 update)" by Ida S. If you haven't done so yet, and if you'd like to know a little more about the rap line, I'd recommend reacting to Ida's video as a starter. Of course, there are a lot of great BTS "intro" vids, but Ida does a great job highlighting each member within a 30 min timeframe (most other intros may not be as comprehensive to newbies within 30 mins). Enjoy the journey;)
@obie juanna Glad to have you! The only Intro I've reacted to so far is "This is BTS" by xCeleste. But I'm planning on reacting to the one you're talking about very soon!
The part where you can hear the marching band cheering them on in the background because they know how exhausting this choreography is and want to give them that extra energy gives me chills every single time. The background dancers in this case were from California (the lady you see standing in the middle of the line at the very beginning is the one that actually choreographed this whole thing) and when they perform it in Korea with their own background dancers, it always makes me sad that they don't hype BTS up like these ones do.
That's so cool and is actually very much a part of the culture of marching band/drum corps/drumline/etc. It was super cool to see here and is definitely an awesome moment
SUGA was part of undeground hip hop scene and was already an established producer before joining BTS. He actually was hired as producer at first, but then was convinced to become member of the group
That's so cool! That really explains his musical knowledge then
Lol “don’t worry Yoongi, you won’t have to dance…”
@@RA-zr2fz lmao lmao. Best deceit ever! 🤣
@@RA-zr2fz yep snickers
SUGA is very talented songwriter, composer, producer and rapper. Hope you'll have opportunity to check out his self-produced mixtapes. He has two of them with 10 tracks each and he releases them not as SUGA of BTS or producer SUGA, but as solo artist Agust D. He differentiates his 3 personas and looks at music with different approach
That sounds so amazing and after this video I'm even more excited to check out some of his stuff
Yes
Suga/Agust D is my bias and I didn't listen to rap before I became ARMY. He is so raw and wise.
Suga is like Bach in mordern age.
@@ejentabi I can't agree more.... he's a genius, not only musically but lyrically as well... I can't believe what goes on in that head of his...
SUGA is very experienced and versatile musician. He has been rapping and making music for 15-16 years. He has been playing piano since very young age and right now started playing guitar and thinks about learning how to play drums. He is credited in many songs for piano, keyboard and synthesizer. And he even has song "First love", which is about piano and music. When he had multiple part-time jobs he was working at record studio and was giving MIDI lessons. He was undeground rapper and known as producer. K-media named him Hand of Midas, cause each song he produces becomes a hit. He produces not only for BTS but for other famous artists as well and produced songs in absolutely different genres from hip hop to r&b, from alternative rock to pop and he has multiple awards as producer and broke many records as solo artist.
This all makes a lot of sense! I can't wait to react to his solo album 😀
@@AndrewBergSax he has two albums :) first one is more into heavy rap but second one (named D-2) has different genres in it and I'm sure you'll enjoy D-2
Yayyy someone who appreciates the 3 over 4 thing in Suga's verse! It one of my favorite parts of the song but most people just gloss over it... I love it!
I could never gloss over that. Hahaha. That's the kind of thing that makes me do a double take 😂
Jungkook's bridge part always gives me goosebumps. This guy is insane talented.
I absolutely agree!!
At first I was like oh, he's not watching On Kinetic Manifesto Film with the marching band but after seeing your amazement and hearing all the aspects of the music that I have never heard from another reactor, I think it would have been too much. The Grand Central performance is pretty close anyway. Sorry if we broke you, Andrew. Thanks for the breakdown!
Live performances for some reason usually don't have the captions unless they're fan made. That really irked me with MTV Unplugged where I felt a new audience NEEDED to see the lyrics to Blue and Grey especially.
@@mochiluvr6753 the MTV unplugged finally has captions. I just watched it the other day with captions
@@creativereader6033 Oh, that's great to know. Thanks!
@Lynn Pollock Yeah, when I saw that the KM and the live performance looked similar, I decided I would mix it up a little bit and do the original MV. I still might do something with the KM later!
And that's so weird about the live performances... really doesn't make any sense to me
@@AndrewBergSax It was filmed in LA with the UCLA group, maybe another too, and lots of drone cameras...lol. The young woman front and center in the MV and the performances is the main choreographer.
the part where you can hear the drumline yelling "let's go" and "hey" gives me chills every time. it is such a nice touch!!!
Yes! And the funny part is I almost didn't even acknowledge it because that's just how drumline people are 😂 it just felt super natural to me. Haha
@@AndrewBergSax there is a video were they r practicing for an award performance. The dance crew yells and hypes them up because the guys r super tiered. They have been dancing this most difficult choreo for hrs. The guys get the energy they need and go hard once more and kill it. It's so cool.
Jungkook’s high note bridge was the highlight of the whole song. his highnotes are insane, he goes from lower notes to high notes easily, effortlessly and perfectly. also his dancing parts especially for dance-break was amazing. He is so perfect and flawless at everything he does. he is something else everytime, getting all public attention and going viral everywhere among locals everyday, he really owned the song with his voice, dance, visuals, aura, charisma. He’s so insane. 💜
Yes. I love your comments on every video for Jungkook
Yes! 🥰💜
re: Jimmy Fallon's show, i agree, they ought to incorporate English translation for BTS, given how frequently the group is featured on the show (yes, safe to say, Fallon is ARMY:). i'm relatively new ARMY from Cali myself and love BTS as a whole, no matter what language their songs are in. but for the general English based audience that Fallon is introducing them to, that he primarily caters to, captions would serve to heighten the curiosity of first-time viewers of BTS' performances/music, respectfully. i mean, it's obvious that BTS performances are already eye-catching, but the significance of their lyrics may easily be dismissed, which is a shame.
I 100% agree with you and I'm also from CA! 😀
I believe the later performances they did on Fallon have the translated lyrics. Like their performance of Home and Black Swan and others during the BTS week on Jimmy Fallon. Which is the bare minimum they should be doing if they want to have closed captions, however because Foreign Shows rarely add captions other than (singing in Korean) this is much appreciated.
I agree. Heartily.
Not gonna lie, I absolutely love it when musicians geek out to BTS. Because I can recognize their artistry but I can't explain and define it, so I love to hear someone actually breaking down what's going on.
That's awesome, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. What you described here is exactly what I'm trying to do, so it's really that it's working. Haha
Ok ok ok ok i need to calm down but you're literally the first reactor tat actually gives ON the love it deserves. ON is my alltime favourite BTS song. So, I ain't gonna ask u to react to anything because man, you will be amazing reacting to any bts song at all.I'm so happy that you did this reaction. I wanna join your twitter group so bad hehe. It would be amazing to meet more musical armys and geek out about the actual music and message of bts, not how hot they are (but that's good too haha)
Hahaha this comment is amazing and I will definitely keep a look out for your message! Just make sure you put your username here if it's not part of your Twitter handle 😀
Suga is quite the genius. I definitely recommend that you look into his work a little more. Fascinating person with a ridiculous amount of talent.
Yes! I'm so excited to hear more from him 😀
There's the "On Commentary Film" which is a behind the scenes of the making of the song ON with the Bruins band members and the chorus group who sang in the background too in the recording studio in Los Angeles. It might be something you want to check out if you have time.
Yes, I really want to watch that one too!
@@AndrewBergSax It's a must for a professional musician!
@@AndrewBergSax Absolutely, it's a top-notch mini documentary about the musicians
Yes it’s fabulous!💜
I just love how u geek out on music. I love to hear music discussion in depth. Keep on geeking.
Excited to see what will be your next pick. I would suggest Black Swan from the same album but musically it's completely different. It's a masterpiece. Until next time...
Thank you! Yes, Black Swan has been a very popular suggestion!
Uuh.. i cant wait for Black Swan. Im requesting for you to review both official MV and Orchestral version MN Dance Company MV
Checkout too, blackswan live performance in James Corden... amazing too.. 💜💜💜
@@houseofalex yesss
You should check out SUGA's song Interlude: Shadow
Thank you, I will!
The message behind that song is so deep
Thank you for reacting, I remember Jimmy saying that after they finished filming, he hugged TAE and he can hear Tae's heartbeat from his back
Another very anthemic song, although earlier musically is "Not Today".
Oh awesome, thank you!
@@AndrewBergSax Love the reaction and visualization of 3 vs 4 time! Yeah Not Today has a lot of similarities! Not the same music sound, but it’s a fight song with great/difficult choreography and most live performances have a large group of background dancers where (no spoilers) they do a really cool surprising part in the dance that emphasizes the theme of the song! Also for info, there’s a Golden disk award with only DNA and Not today where they add a new intro dance that is really artsy and cool (I like the dance practice because u can see the choreo much more clearly without camera movement)
Another pump up song with tough choreo and tons of dancers is "Dionysus".
Yes, Not Today and Dionysus!
@@angelkbear5472 agree
Jungkook's part is so beautiful! His voice is amazing.
I agree!
Yeah, you are back with a new video!
I never liked rap until I found BTS, and I had followed kpop well before BTS. Every rapper in BTS has their own styles but they all love to play around with their rhythms which is what first drew my attention. They have several rap only songs where they continually switch up the tempo and signature. The rap cadence becomes its own instrument. Super cool how you showed the changes in this song!
I'm so glad you liked it, and I'm really excited to see what else they can do. I'm just continuously surprised by them after each song
@@AndrewBergSax yep same as us lol
A few things about the "On" videos the audio recording was done by the UCLA brass and percussion but the video "On Manifesto ... " was performed by the Blue Devil Drum and Bugle Crop. Now on J-Hope rapping he is primarily a dance and the dance leader for BTS so when he raps he has the rythm of a dancer he dances very improvisionally so it is no wonder that he raps that way as well, the second place you stopped the "I don't give a ugh" is actually Suga, he writes/produces most of the big sounds coming out of BTS. You really need to watch the "On Manifesto Con Prima" it is probrably gonna be something you will enjoy more, since the music is what you want to listen to. You remind me of how I feel the first time I hear everyone one of their songs. It was fun watching you count the beat before you talk about it. There were many biblical references but it is very much the culmination of the BTS universe. No your not that bothers me too. How hard is it to get a Korean translator for a few words. Probably 30 min worth of work.
Thank you for all the info! I think I might have a plan for something with the Kinetic Manifesto film in the future, so I'm going to save that one for now! Also with the translator, it really seems like such an oversight considering how many views that video has
Actually this song is about their fear and the overcoming of it in their own way, but the MV was distracting us by reffering so many confusing images and ideas 😂 I really hope people pay MORE attention to the story and the meaning the members were trying to deliver through the lyrics, than the ambiguous MV😂😂
What a relief you also watched the live performance😂💜
Hahaha yeah I wanted to have two different types of things to react to and apparently had no idea what I was in for with the MV. It looked cool though 😂
Fun fact about them performing at Grand Central. The boys had a lot of issues with sliding on the floors because they were so polished. Eventually they sprayed the bottoms of there shoes with hair spray to avoid sliding, you can see the powder marks of the hair spray under them. The most wonderful thing about BTS is that they offer an insane amount of behind the scenes info to really see what is going on during these performances and just how hard they work.
you talking about suga's part is my favorite! it really takes a genius to notice this kind of things he does on his rap. suga is well known to do experimental things. i might say he doesn't settle for what's a typical or easy thing to do in a song and he's making music for more than a decade so he's a very good musician and rapper
Thank you so much! I've really started to notice Suga and that he always does something different with his rap style. It's really interesting 😀
Your face when the band started hyping Bts up was priceless! That’s how I felt the first time I saw it too. 💜
There is also another video of this called ON Kinetic Manifesto Film were you actually see the marching band. There's several live performances including the 2020 MAMA where they danced in a stadium with a full marching band.
That's so awesome! I'd love to watch a performance like that!
The part where the dancers yell while the dance break is happening never fails to bring tears on my eyes, no lie
You know the song is ahmazing when Andrew Berg is STUTTERING trying to digest the genius of BTS 👍
Same Andrew; same
Stuff like his solo here is def why jungkook is the main vocalist of bts even though he’s the youngest and 2-5 years younger than everybody lol he debuted as the main vocalist, lead dancer, sub rapper and center of bts… he is an extremely hard worker and constantly pushing himself to grow …. All members of bts are hardworking and constantly focusing on just bettering themselves in their craft and it makes them so special to me… jungkook as the main vocalist does so much more than people even realize… it’s crazy but he’s so passionate about music and singing.. he loves it so much.. and is just an incredible artist… he’s known for being pitch perfect and extremely stable physically and vocally… it’s crazy how good they can all sing while doing these crazy dances… takes a lot of work!!! Yeh jungkook is always striving to challenge himself and has grown up to be this unstoppable force of nature. On carpool karaoke with James corden they sang on and watching and hearing jungkook so this solo part with no microphone just sitting in the car and to sound exactly the same.. if not better is mind boggling… such a trip!!! Everyone in bts has something that they do better than everyone else… they’re 7 superstars who are totally dedicated to the group… and always work as a team with no one trying to outshine everyone… they work so well together and are truly a family!!! Would be cool if you checked out the “main vocalist jungkook” by Ida s … kinda see what he does live and recording.. different clips of people talking about him like the members and what he does in this role… and just how much he takes on… it’s really cool and stuff about the vocal production that I never knew and watching them record a song together on it… def such an interesting video to watch!!!
He is definitely incredible, and I also agree that everyone brings something unique and special to the table. I'll make sure to check out that video, thank you!
I love how you go in depth explaining things such as Suga’s rap on a different time signature but still landing on 1 at the end. These are concepts I haven’t thought about since I was in high school band and it really gets me excited to hear the technicalities. Great job explaining!
Thank you so much and I'm so glad that it made sense 😀
BTS never refer to their dancers as "backup dancers", so we shouldn't either. They are dancers and an integral part of each BTS choreo. Especially in this ON performance. "Backup dancers" do a different job - to fill up space. Like when a singer is singing, some dancers will be dancing in the background or around the singer. Remove them and the performance can still go on. Remove BTS' dancers and its not gonna work. Get it? Just pointing out a technicality, don't kill me 😂😘. P.s. BTS started out as backup dancers for other kpop stars (pre-debut). They have come a looooong way since.
Oh wow, I had no idea! Thanks for the info! I'll definitely keep that in mind
Honestly I'm not even sure how I found the music video BTS ON but I did, it was my first taste of BTS and I've been hooked ever since. No regrets Army for life 💜
me too! I came to it from a reactions channel; I had heard Dynamite before but didn't love it. On got me, hook, line, and sinker
That's so awesome! Yeah, this song should be one of the first that everybody listens to. It literally has everything
Yoongi (SUGA's real name) is a musician to his very core. he is the only member who can read sheet music and he has the ability to perceive musical stimuli such as small changes in pitch, sound, rhythm, and other sub-domains of music processing that allow him to pursue and master all forms of the art with seeming ease. Yoongi’s natural ability for music is astounding.
That's incredible! I'm so excited to hear more of his music 😀
It has another MV “BTS ON KINETIC MANIFESTO FILM” please react to this one too.
YES! I almost chose to react to that one instead, and I'm definitely considering reacting to it in the future now!
the Kinetic Manifesto is certainly something...
@@AndrewBergSax Gotta watch it!!! I like it more than the official MV. But that's because I was a dancer... 😁😁
@@AndrewBergSax pls do the production is awesome ty
The Jimmy Fallon Show performance is basically the ON: Kinetic Manifesto Film recreated
Your breakdown of the timing of Suga's part was great, I would love to see more explanations like that whenever it fits to do so.
Thank you so much! I think this was the first time I broke down rhythms like that in a video, but I've broken down chords and other aspects in Still With You and Lie, I think!
I fell down the BTS Rabbit Hole four years ago, I am a 65 year old woman and I absolutely adore BTS.
27:17 *holds breath*
27:29 *sigh of relief* yeah I agree
Thanks for the fun and informative reaction! I'm looking forward to every single one of your BTS reactions and you never disappoint :) Keep up the great work!
Hahaha I'm glad you like the videos and yeah, I had to point that part out, it bugged me 😅
Suga💜....Genius💜...those two words are enough 🥰
Hahahaha I agree 😂
lmao we've got fallon to put subtitles now on newer videos but yeah it was rough before that 😭 there's a bit more to it than that (I can't remember everything about it, but they need consent to do the subtitles etc etc and subtitlers also often charge by the word. it's complicated 🥴) but it's mostly solved now! fallon always puts subtitles now I think. tiny desk also originally didn't have subtitles and MTV unplugged but we badgered them into it lmao
bts also performed ON with an actual marching band for MAMA last year if that's something you want to check out (on your own time or as a video, whatever suits you!)
Oh that's hilarious. That show brings in so much money, that a subtitler could charge by the letter 😂 That's awesome that they include it now though.
Wait, a full marching band?! Well now I'm curious.....
On was so criminally underrated in the music charts~
What?! I assumed this song would've been huge!
@@AndrewBergSax On peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100... they only got #1 and a Grammy nomination with Dynamite, the first time they sang in English and no writing or producing credits... :( it was huge in the rest of the world though~
They shut down Grand Central Station, and performed this at 4am. They also did some mini interviews and games while riding the subway ! It was a really great show.
The section Jungkook sings really high, he can pull that off perfectly, live. He sang that in Carpool Karaoke with James Cordon. It might surprise you to see him do it there, because if you have only see him in videos or on stage, you haven’t seen our baby bunny. He is polar opposite of his strong, sexy stage persona. He is a shy, introverted, cute boy (although he is a 24 y o adult).
Who else can make an epic video/movie with a song that has a marching band, and make it work ? Nobody. BTS will always push the boundaries, and never fail to create something amazing and beautiful. They break the molds and are trendsetters.
I loved watching your face and seeing your reactions, and then your speechless moments when you paused, trying to gather your thoughts !
There are some great performances of this song that you should check out on your own. One, they did in a stadium with a large marching band. They also did a B side mv to it, with the dancers, that is all dance performed, that they filmed in California.
So glad you enjoyed this ! Thank you for your reaction and professional explanations.💜💜💜
Thank you so much for the info and I'm glad you enjoyed it! I can't wait to see more of their live performances and I've heard rumor of the one in the stadium. I can't wait to react to that in the future
Well that's our boy suga!! Great producer! 😍😍
I love that I always learn something new from your reactions ! By the way ON is from their map of the soul 7 album. The entire album is based on Carl Jungs psychological theory of persona, shadow and ego.
The music video is connected to their story line which is about 6 years running. Lots of biblical references. Also good catch with the pride rock.
Many people want this song to be performed at like the super bowl but honestly I'm hoping for the FIFA world cup.
This song could be a whole performance in itself for one of those events. You wouldn't even need another song 😂
And I'm glad you were able to learn something from my videos 😊
I loved your explanation of the separate beats/rhythm between Yoongi rapping and the actual music - I guess it works because 3 and 4 can both be divided into 12 (my old music teacher used to tell me that maths and music are related 😂🤷♂️) and they joined up again on the 12…?
Oh, and Yoongi is an accomplished pianist, he started learning in early elementary school (as well as his skills as a music producer, rapper, songwriter, dancer and singer)
The dance practice for ON is amazing too…
That's exactly right! I actually was surprised because he went for 24 (still works), but it definitely went on longer than I thought and tool me by surprise. I'm glad you liked the explanation 😀
@@AndrewBergSax ah, ok - the math still works 😂🤷♂️
I really do enjoy your reaction videos, your joy in the structure of the music is very interesting to see, and it makes me happy when you find something you like 😃
I did not watch your previous video because, although I adore Jungkook, he is an amazing man, singer, dancer, I am not really crazy about his solo songs (other Army may want to kill me for saying this 🙈 but it’s just my personal taste). I do love Jimin and Tae’s solo songs (Jin’s are a mixed bag for me). I think I found your channel when you had just a couple of hundred subs, and I loved your enthusiasm from the beginning - it wasn’t you, it was just the song 🤷♂️
Please don’t forget Louder Than Bombs 🙏💜
SUGA said about this song "I wrote a lot of lyrics, but I've been empathizing to 'ON' lately because it was written before the pandemic, but there is a part that goes 'Even if I fall on my knees, as long as they don't get buried, it won't matter'. I think it's spot on to the current situation. Right now with the pandemic it's not easy for many and we went through tough times as well, but it's not like we ever give up or let go of hope altogether, right? So with the current situation that we are in, I felt very comforted while revisiting this song recently"
BTS wrote many motivational and comforting songs with deep meaning, which help not only us, but them as well
That is absolutely amazing. Their writing is so influential and moving
He edited in Classic Batman and Star Wars, he teaches Jazz, AND he is reacting to BTS?!? IM IN!!! 🥰 A man after my own heart, I’m here for it 💜🥰👍🏼 Subscribed 💜💜💜
Hahaha the clips just come to me 😂 I try to include them at the front of every video to relate to the song. I've done everything from Star Wars to Parks and Recreation to Finding Nemo. It's one of the most enjoyable editing things for me to do 😂💜
Andrew Berg They definitely give your videos something more enjoyable and entertaining than most reaction videos, especially since seem to like the same stuff as me, lol, plus I love the added bonus of a more musically in depth reaction, I’m really enjoying your channel, keep it coming 🤩💜
Thank you so much! 😀💜
if you want more songs exactly like this, you'll DEFINITELY need to react to "not today", which is in my top 3 favourite BTS songs EVER. like others said, it's another "you can't keep us down" fight song/anthem with more amazing dancing and visuals. it is honestly the most motivational song i've ever heard. i hope that song makes it to the top of your list :]
I deal with a ton of chronic pain, and those songs (On and Not Today) really help me when I'm having a rough time. Jungkook's new song Stay Alive helps too... Just very effective songs for me.
Indeed, no matter who YOU are...there is always a kind of BTS for you💜💜💜 They always have something for YOU👉
I believe that!
Haha glad you watched the Jimmy Fallon show also! It's always so interesting and insightful to hear from you.
And as it seems like you will gonna react to Not Today next, after watching the official MV pls watch their live stage mix! These compilation shows the various stages in one video😉

That's actually a good idea!
Yes pls watch the live performance also!
Thanks for the suggestion!! 😀 I love watching a live performance after seeing the MV so it's perfect!
Lol we all hated that "singing in Korean" too. It makes sense in the sense that the cc for tv shows is generally to provide aid for the deaf/hearing impaired, not translation. But after we all fussed about it, they got better at putting on translations 😄
Yeah, I guess that makes sense! At least they're not doing that going forward!
I mean there is a reason why SUGA is called Genius musician and King of the music industry... thank you for explanation, it was really interesting! If you are going to react to SUGA's solo songs in the future I recommend you First love, Seesaw, Interlude: Shadow. He is also lyrical genius, so make sure to check out lyrics :)
Thanks for the recommendations! I'm so excited to listen to those 😀
The performance at the end is not even a third of the performances at the awards ceremonies. Please take a look at their performances at the MMA and MAMA award ceremonies, legends. I think BTS is the group with the best live performance in the world. :)
The rhythm explanation *chef kiss*
Andrew, I never get bored with your videos
The background music when you talked about it and the explanation of yoongi's part 👏👏
Keep going... Borahae💜

That's a common complaint with American shows, not having closed captions for BTS performances. I will say though, that the Jimmy Fallon BTS week did amazing with the closed captions. I would love to see a reaction to those. I will link them. All of the performances are amazing.

- There's sooo much symbolism in the mv that there're entire explanation videos (yes, plural) on it. Some of their songs/mvs do require explanations and this is definitely one of them.
- BTS's music in general is quite complex and interesting. It's one of their many charms. Even their rap only songs. (I hated rap before, but BTS's rap...)
- Fun fact: They closed down Central Station for an hour in the middle of the night to shoot this performance. 🤯
- You should definitely check out Black Swan. It's like a work of art.
Wait, they filmed that in an hour?! That's crazy! I figured with all the lighting and staging and everything, it would have taken a whole night!
Also I love the complexity in their music and Black Swan is definitely high on my list!
@@AndrewBergSax The crew of 180 members were there at 10P.M to set up cameras and rehearse in the other rooms. BTS came at 12A.M and waited until 2A.M when the terminal closed. And they had 2 hours to do a perfect perfomace. Jimmy said they did 3-4 times in 2 hours and most of the take was the second time. The Tonight Show also paid to rent the special subway and it took 2 months to organize the five minute spectacle as "our love letter to this city"
That's incredible!! They pulled that off so fast
@@hangtran6040
Yes, it was 2 hours not 1 - that they had the terminal, sorry. 🤷♀️
A few more fun facts about this performance: BTS did the whole thing straight up 3 or 4 times in a row at 2am and Fallon said he felt their hearts beating out of their chests when he hugged them after!
Also the whole thing was choreographed by (then) 17yo Sienna Lalau (seen as one of the drummers/ dancers).
I highly recommend watching their dance practise to this as well And another great live performance is the Seoul Soccer Worldcup stadium one 🤌🏻
So glad you watched the live performance! Can't wait till you do more of their iconic performamces!!
I saw in someone's comment here that you are planning to watch Not Today, so I'll just let you know that some of the lyrics from Not Today is quoted/inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.
"날아갈 수 없음 뛰어 뛰어갈 수 없음 걸어 걸어갈 수 없음 기어 기어서라도 gear up"
"If you can’t fly, then run If you can’t run, then walk If you can’t walk, then crawl Even if you have to crawl, gear up" - Not Today
"If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward." -Martin Luther King Jr.
Not Today really shows bts's mindset, no wonder they overcame and are overcoming so many obstacles, hates and slanders
Wow, that's incredible. And Not Today won't be next, but it will definitely be at some point! That's super cool with the lyrics. I really hope I remember that when I'm reacting because I'd love to see how they use that
Suga's said that, of all the things that happened with the pandemic, it about KILLED him when he realized they weren't going to get to perform this live. He WROTE this to be performed in a stadium-- he was really intrigued by the marching band sound and culture, and wrote this as kind of a fusion between that and BTS's sound.
I wasn't a huge fan of rap music before BTS-- the closest I got, really, was rap rock, where the rap is set against a strong lyric line (think Linkin Park). What I love about the BTS rap line is how different each of their styles are. RM and Suga were both underground rappers before BTS was formed; J-Hope started as a dancer and learned to rap with them as a trainee.
RM is the lyrical genius, with layered meanings, strong use of poetic devices, and clever, multi-lingual double (and triple) entendres. His rap in Ddaeng is one of my absolute favorites, and his solo mixtape song "Joke" is amazing.
Suga is volcanic, rapid-fire rap with (as you see here) an insanely fine-tuned sense of beat and rhythm and musicality. (One of the most impressive examples of this was during an awards show performance of Mic Drop (this one: ruclips.net/video/k259rfFFAx8/видео.html ). To prove to their critics that BTS was singing & rapping live, Suga deliberately lowered his mic during part of his rap to let the audience hear just the background track. What fewer ppl noticed is that he ALSO added something like a 1/16th or 1/32nd hesitation into his rap right before that "mic drop" (almost like a mini-counterpoint) before flowing seamlessly back into his regular part.) If no one's recommended Daechwita to you yet, it's a masterpiece (with, yes, kind of a complex storyline, but it's worth it.)
J-Hope is kind of between their styles-- he raps like he dances. He has a really strong sense of beat and flow, and he also incorporates some singing into his rap. His part in Outro: Tear is incredibly powerful, and his solo song Ego is just massive fun.
I actually cried the first time I saw this. And Fallon does now add the CC since this. I'm surprised they didn't go back and do this one. Love your reactions! Have a great day 😊💜
Oh that's great to hear! I'm glad they decided to do that. I'm glad you liked the video 💜
Agreed! Jimmy Fallon 10000% could have hired someone to translate or literally looked up a translation and it would have been better than “singing in Korean”🙄💜
Shit I love that black to blue hair on jungkook…. I forgot how much I love that lol but 24:43 right after his solo he goes into this dance part SO hard!!! I think the hardest I’ve seen him do that in on… but I was literally jungshook… like he went on FIGHTING!!!! I also miss jimins blue hair and silver hair :/ rip colorful hair jimin :/ oh well… he still always looks amazing!!!!
This entire choreography with all its moving parts was done by a 19 year old dancer. She is in the middle of the dancers at the very beginning. It's like she did sets for a field show AND choreography for some amazing dancers. Blows my mind!
WOW! That's incredible! That's so impressive to be able to do at that age
Thank you for the in depth dissection of both the song and performance. Enjoying your reactions a lot!! Please react to more of their live stages and songs like - Fake Love, Save Me, Spring Day, etc
Thank you, I will definitely check them out!
God I freaking LOVE watching someone just GET IT. You can see their talent, as a musician, and it's really awesome to see that
Thank you for your analysis! Since you mentioned the uniqueness of Suga's polyrhythmic rapping, I don’t know if you’ve listened to Kendrick Lamar’s album To Pimp a Butterfly, but I think you might be interested in it as it is very jazz-influenced and the rapping uses a variety of complex rhythms, including polyrhythms. This is just one example; the subgenre of jazz rap alone has a number of diverse and skilled rappers and musicians. I understand that rap isn’t for everyone and that’s fine, but I just hope you know that there are so many interesting songs and subgenres to explore in this art form!
As a Black American, an important part of what drew me to BTS is their ability to skillfully and respectfully draw inspiration from Black artists and cultures (which they acknowledge in their song Hip Hop Phile aka Hip Hop Lover). They haven’t been perfect at this, but I feel that they’ve matured a great deal since their early years. In the On performance, I see this influence reflected not only in their rapping, but also in the combination of their hip hop choreography with the marching band (reminiscent of HBCU marching band culture) and the gospel choir with the organ.
I mention this because I feel that the influence of Black artists tends to be overlooked when comparing BTS (and other nonblack artists) to American artists, especially when it comes to rap music. Sometimes when people encounter BTS making rap music in a way that they’re not used to hearing, they’ll attribute it to them being Korean or non-American, when actually a lot of Korean rap sounds very much like (mostly Black) American rap. This is not to say that Koreans, including BTS, don’t bring their own unique musicality, culture, and lyricism to rap music (including traditional Korean music, as BTS and others have done). But some of what people perceive as being non-American in rap music has actually been done before by (usually Black) American artists.
I don’t mean to accuse you of anything, just to make you and others aware, if you’re not already, that this happens. Since you’re a jazz musician and presumably have some awareness of how Black artists have been marginalized before and now, I hope you’ll understand where I’m coming from.

Thank you so much for this comment and for speaking out. Kendrick is one of the only rappers I actually do follow! I can't remember what song it was, but he had one that was treated like a bebop jazz tune and that blew my mind. He is an absolutely amazing musician.
I agree with everything you’ve said and I really hope I didn't give the impression of being insensitive of Black culture, especially on its influence on literally all Western music. Jazz is literally the foundation for all Western music.
I believe I've actually read the first article you sent already (but I will be looking into it to make sure) and I will definitely watch that video.
Thank you again for this comment 💜
@@AndrewBergSax Thank you for replying! You're fine, I'm just used to seeing stereotypes and misconceptions about rap music and BTS' influences, so I was being preemptive I guess. I figured you'd understand and I appreciate it. 💜
The Kendrick song you were thinking of, was it maybe For Free? I'm glad to hear you appreciate his work. I imagine you might also be interested in Robert Glasper's jazz and hip hop fusion as well.
ROBERT GLASPER IS AMAZING. The first song I heard from him was "Gonna Be Alright (FTB)" and I was blown away (I think I actually have a version of me playing this on my Instagram if you scroll back far enough).. Then I went through all of his albums and saw him in concert like 2 months later. He does a version of Blue Skies that I still cannot comprehend.
But yes, I absolutely understand your reasoning for bringing that up. It's such an important topic to discuss and it's important people understand that.
Oh! And yes, For Free is the song! It's genius. Absolute pure genius. It even gives me Louis Jordan vibes a bit. He was one of the first people to really "rap" back in the 1940's
Sarah, thank you for bringing more awareness to the influence of Black artists. And to do so in such a welcoming way. Really appreciate you. When I think about it, BTS is so often compared to white boy groups and yet, we know that BTS draws their influences from Black artists. I have a lot to think about now. Edit: I looked up Robert Glasper. I enjoyed the contemplative mood against the jazz.
@@QueensThief76455 Thank you Raquel! It is indeed ironic that BTS is more often compared with white boy groups despite the fact that not only their music, but also the Kpop idol trainee and group model itself is largely inspired by Black artists. The Kpop idol group system was inspired by the groups and artist development of Motown Records (which became "SM Town" in Korea with SM Entertainment in the 90s, and which BTS was modeled after). This includes the required choreography training, and even Motown's "charm school" which would train artists in etiquette, speaking, stage presence, etc. to appeal to the masses (and in Korea's case, an international audience, as South Korea is relatively small and competition with other Kpop idols is usually huge).
Glad you enjoyed Robert Glasper! It always makes me happy when BTS fans learn about Black artists from BTS' influences. Namjoon actually played the Robert Glasper song Always Shine in a RUclips live stream and that got a lot of Armys, including me, interested. I learn from BTS and Armys as well! It's one of the many joys of being an Army. 💜
Think the Jimmy Fallon Show took note of us all complaining about the translations as when they had the BTS week their were proper cc for all the performances.
I'm glad they've fixed it now! That's great 😀
I am so happy you took the time to view the actual music video first then watch an actual performance of On. Way too many reactors follow what in my opinion is not optimal advice by ARMYs who lead reactors to what is called the Kinetic Manifesto version of On. This is essentially the performance you saw but knitted together from a number of film shots over a few days.
Almost none of those reactors who followed this recommendation proceeded from the Kinetic Manifesto to the actual mv in which Big Hit and BTS invested quite a bit to cinematically convey the meaning of the song through an amazing series of allegories. So virtually none of those reactors had their intellectual curiosity after watching the Kinetic Manifesto to find out what the song means. They were satisfied to gawk at the circus.
Your tack is a 100 times better because after seeing the mv first you seem stimulated to investigate out the song's meaning which DKDKTV does quite well. And you got the circus in a legendary live performance.
Thank you so much and I'm so glad you feel that way! Almost everyone recommended the Kinetic Manifesto, but when I saw the first few seconds of the different videos (have to figure out which one would be best), and I saw they looked kind of similar, I immediately wanted to go with the original MV. And I was not disappointed!
At the end of the mv they showed “no more dream” and then removed “no more” and made it into only “dream”
No more dream is actually the name of their debut song. The song that started BTS :)
Great reaction 👍 I learned something new about Suga's rap
Thank you! I'm glad I could help 😀
Jungkook is Mister Talent and Uniqueness!
Yaaay, posting day!!! You are a gift to this world, I swear!
That is so nice, thank you so much! 💜
The dance practices are amazing too you get more of the band instruments. I was going to see this live 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
one of their best live performance was in the MMA 2019
That's awesome! I can't wait to react to the MMA and MAMA performances!
@@AndrewBergSax my favorite is the mma 2020 because I love the black swan and dynamite performance but in the mama 2020, the really double down on the marching band theming in ON (it’s awesome). Hint- They rent a whole football field…🤯😁
@Ciera Divens I can't wait to react to these. Like so much
Fun fact: BigHit used the same team (Infiniti) that worked on Avengers movies for this mv 😊. No, its not about heaven and hell. Lol. This mv is the hardest to crack/explain in terms of meaning (gazillion of references, very complicated and deep!) and the best ON explanation video is by Bookish Theories, an Italian Army. Go check her video out if you have the time, but get ready to be mind-blown :-). DKDKTV is good for a few explanation videos only. The rest are misses. P.s. those are dancers, not backup dancers. 😭
You're so cool dude. Thank you for this reaction. I learned something, it feels great.
Thank you so much! I love getting people to learn about music through BTS 😊
Hi. Me again. This is one of my favorites and I loved the way you explained things during the Music Video. I'd like to recommend that you watch 2018, 2019, and 2020 MMA Live Performances. I think you'll be blown away. MMA = Melon Music Awards. The first 2 are in front of live audiences. The 2020, due to the pandemic, was filmed "live" but the audience was virtual. Looking forward to seeing more of your BTS reactions. :) Also, I am in the U.S. and am almost at official retirement age, and I love BTS for their lyrics, dancing and singing abilities. I was never into rap before, but I think I'm being converted as I really enjoy how the rap lines are mixed with the rest, plus RM, Suga and J-Hope are just awesome and talented people. Some of the older videos have more rap/hip-hop in them, but I even enjoy those.
I thought I was the only one annoyed that the Fallon Show had "singing in Korean" as their subtitles 🙄 like legit all their staff had to do was just take the translation from the official MV, they wouldn't even have to find a translator 🤣
EXACTLY.... it bothered me a lot 😅 like you had a whole week devoted to the group
@@AndrewBergSax facts 😂 ARMY has translators that translate all their content for free almost as soon as it drops and they couldn't even hire someone 🙄🤣
Love you BTS💜👍😍
💜
Thank you very much for reacting to my favorite song. I love it when you include music theory in your videos like you did here. You do an excellent job explaining complicated concepts to those of us without any background in music.
I'm so glad that the explanations are easy to understand! Thank you 😀
Hi, I'm Meg. I'm 63 years old. Ive been ARMY since 2016. BTS helped me to quit a 40 year, smoking habit during the "Love Yourself Era!
That's amazing! The power of BTS seems to be endless!
I loved this reaction and your explanation of things like the differences in the beat and everything are great - really interesting. It just adds even more depth to how good BTS are. thank you 💜💜💜
I'm so glad you liked it! Thank you so much 💜
For another marching band experience watch the 2020 MAMA performance of ON. It’s my fave live of this song.
Oh I've heard of this! That sounds awesome!
He is a master of switching up flows! Go watch Daechwita MV, then the awesome OT7 version from the recent FESTA performances!! AGUST-D is also fire as a solo! Mic Drop/Idol showcase the whole group with a more rap vibe. Prepare to be amazed! The Kinetic Manifesto version of ON is also (of course) great!
So true
Awesome, thanks for the recommendations! I've never really been in to rap, but I'm super excited to listen to these 😂
@@AndrewBergSax Yeah, I'm not a rap fan (or so I thought), but some 90s hip hop was in my wheelhouse...but dang, they're good. I also didn't see myself googling beatboxers after watching Home Free, either, but here we are.
Truly any of their music is good, but many of their songs have rap/dance breaks so all members get a spin.
sorry for leaving so many comments lol, there's just so many things i have to say-this was a REALLY good reaction. basically what i wanted to share is i think the other reason why that final chorus carries SO much impact is because the buildup to it is REALLY long. i mean, what happens before that is kind of a bridge that comes after a bridge that comes after a bridge, if that makes sense. first there's jungkook's solo, which you think would lead into that last chorus. but it doesn't, it leads into the really percussion-heavy first half of the dance break with the smaller units dancing. then all 7 members come together, the tempo speeds up, and the brass and choir vocals come back in for the second half of the dance break, and it's only after THAT the whole thing finally resolves back to the chorus. the long buildup creates a huge sense of release once it finally ends.
Yes! That is an excellent point! The entire song is really building up to that point. Even from the beginning there is a ton of tension. So basically I completely agree with you! Haha
I always look forward for your reactions... They're great ..
You should check out Black Swan, Blood Sweat & Tears or maybe Blue and Grey next.. Thank you for reacting 💜
Thank you so much! I will be reacting to those soon! 😀
I love how you made the BTS screen so BIG!! Finally I can see it and read it. Thank You!!. I love your video reactions.
Loved your reaction. I can tell it was genuine and that you know what you’re talking about. 💜 Thanks for mentioning Tae’s dancing at the beginning. I like the way he hits his moves there too. 🥰
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊
@@AndrewBergSax I really did. I’m gonna subscribe!
Agree 100% about no translations on The Tonight Show video. The official MV from BTS was released already, so they could have just reused the official translation from the MV. I'm sure Big Hit would have emailed them the translation if they asked for it.
Exactly! A lot of people said they added it for future performances, but still... this was a huge video!
Here’s a great video of the making of that performance on Fallon. All the behind the scenes stuff. Just for you! ruclips.net/video/OKy12jb_7EU/видео.html. And here’s a short video of Fallon talking about how they were able to use Grand Central Station and lots of stuff related to that night. ruclips.net/video/m15BCwP11Bs/видео.html
Also it kills me how nervous Jungkook was because he said he gave more than his all in recording but he nailed it in every live performance, even Carpool Karaoke (which unfortunately always gets blocked).
@Marilyn PF Thank you for those links! 😀
@Lynn Pollock Yes, his vocals are incredible on this!
Thank you for the links! That was really interesting. Also, did not expect Jimmy Fallon in a Tata hoodie...
BTS MAMA 2020 (award show) On Performance is A WHOLE SUPERBOWL PERFORMANCE!
I'm so excited to watch that entire MAMA performance! I can't wait 😀
This was a great analysis! Thankyou
Yes, I've heard that one is incredible! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, thank you! 😊
I have a musical background. I took piano lessons, played clarinet in the my high school's band. So yes I love that they incorporated the marching band which is very near and dear to my heart. I also sang in church choirs for many years. I appreciate your break down of the music. There is some theory I still know/remember but a lot has been forgotten. You also share so much I don't think I knew/learned. It makes what BTS has done even more spectacular and amazing in my eyes. I'm an older, newer ARMY and I just love these boys( young men) and what they have accomplished. I have watched this MV several times and as this Texas girl watched this time I saw the huge U.S. flag above them. I began thinking in a degree of amazement here are these young men from the small country of South Korea performing of all places in The Grand Central Station Terminal in New York. They are performing mere miles from the harbor that has welcomed countless immigrants from around the world with words of hope (Give me your tired your poor, your huddled masses), with an ethnically diverse band and group of background dancers. How amazing is that realization. How impressive that they are performing where thousands of people from all walks of life, ethnicities, and countries pass daily. BTS a group that has touched people from around the world with words of hope and encouragement and love. What an appropriate place for them to perform.
Loved your insightful reactions. Jungkook's Bridge and highnotes in ON are the highlight of the whole song. Please do react to his singing compilation and solo songs. Thank you!
Don't cry, Andrew. Don't cry. LOL
