@@dippin4dotsHe misses a lot. For example, he made an overly long explanation for Juan's name, when in reality it comes from "Don Juan", which is an expression in Spanish for someone who is successful with women.
Worth to mention Orion in mythology is a Giant in Galar we have 3 locations named after giant that is Giant's Cap, Giant's Mirror, Giant's Seat and two more in Crown Tundra, Giant's Bed and *Giant's Foot* so DLC codename is not only named after foot of giant it also contains it
Im pretty sure those areas are meant to hint the presence of Regigigas in Galar during the time of the darkest day (and in current times). Since Regigigas created regieleki and regidrago.
Another point that makes Sword and Shield’s codename (Orion) work is the 2 constellations closely related to Orion: Canis Major and Canis Minor; 2 dogs that accompany him, much like how Zacian and Zamazenta accompanied the hero of Galar.
The codename for the SV DLC makes even more sense when you remember that the other parts of the game also focus on fruit. Naranja Academy and Uva Academy representing oranges and grapes, and the Blueberry Academy too
I personally consider "Swan" to be a reference to a swan song. Black 2 and White 2 WERE the last Pokémon games on the DS and the last games that predominantly used sprites, so it would make sense why it would be considered a swan song. One last 2D game with all the content to mark the end of an era.
USUM is "Autum leaves" for that same reason, it's the last 3ds game as they were preparing themselves for a big change with producing home console games from that moment on.
I assumed it was an ugly duckling reference because people were heavy critics of Black and White even though it sold well….then Black and White 2 doubled its predecessors sales.
to add, it could also be referencing that they were supposed to be the last reboots of the series. There was a rumor that Black and White were the end of pokemon.
Fun fact: new features in Pokemon Go also have codenames according to datamines. Dynamax was "Bread", so Gigantamax was "BreadDough" and Power Spots were "Bread Stations".

Rumor has it that "NX" wasn't the proper way to say the Switch codename. Some say it's actually supposed to be pronounced "N Cross", much like "Project X Zone". After all, it's a portable and a home console. Of course, rumor. Not confirmed.
Or rather Nintendo Cross, cross as in a crossover or mix between things like how the Switch was a mix of Home Console, Portable and Tabletop. And it was likely changed from X or Cross for vagueness and loose religious connections causing problems. So in reality the codename and actual name might be essentially the same
Regarding more about the Swan codename, back in the old days of online chats and games in China, Japan and Korea, players could only use letters and numbers in their usernames. Some would want symbols in their name like stars and diamonds so they would combine characters to create them. One popular usage was S2 to create a heart, as it is mimics two swans pressing their heads together to create a heart. So the 2 in Black/White 2 may allude to this alongside the reasoning presented in the video and the black/white themes from Swan Lake other commenters have pointed out.
This was my thought at first too, a swan is shaped like a 2. But I'm sure the codename, like half of pokemon designs and names, are chosen because they have multiple fitting meanings.
Kenya... Because Ken Sugimori pitched it. The "ya" is probably related to the Japanese language somehow, but my brain doesn't know enough to be 100% on it.
Kinda a stretch, but Swan could also refer to a swang song. A final gesture/performance/effort before death/retirement B2/W2, where the final mainline games, to use pixel art. Afterwards, it was 3D. The final performance of pixel art, before it was retired
With "Gaia" remember that "Orion" (a greek hero) was the codename for SwSh but the games were set in a UK based region. So maybe it's the characterisctics of Orion that might be the connection not the where it comes from, so in the case of "Gaia" what characteristics does she have that could relate to islands/an archipelago?
A lot of these seem to be related to the game's development itself, and could help us learn what those future games are development/idea-wise. SuMo being Niji could also represent the unquestionably improved visuals and colors compared to XY, and USUM being Momiji represents it being an alternate version of SuMo instead of an enhancement or sequel. Therefore, Swan could refer to Swansong, as XY would have started development at the time of its creation, and they probably knew B2W2 were likely the last 2D games at the time. I also think this lends to ZA being much more focused than XY were. Kujira was a literal whale of a project like you said, there was so much they had to make in the same time as a regular game. But Ikkaku referring to a narwhal could signal its project focus; a much smaller but more focused and developed Kalos, possibly proving that it will entirely be in or near Lumiose like Nintendo said. This makes me think Gaia could be much bigger than any game we've seen before, whether literally or story-wise, so I really hope they're getting that theorized extra development time.
The SwSh dlc code name being called Rigel might also relate to the Isle of Armour being based on the Isle of Man, whose flag consists of three armoured legs
“Rainbows are associated with Hawaii” I remember during the early days of the Sun and Moon trailers, where everyone (including me) was convinced that “Tapu Koko” was actually Ho-Oh
Hey Lockstin, Arab here on 15:00 you mention Rigel being an Arabic name meaning foot which isn’t entirely correct Its actually derived from the word “Rijl” which means foot, Rigel itself solely refers to the star (and I’ve never actually heard of anyone named that either but Its a big world). other than that great video as always
Honestly, Gaïa= Greece region is kinda stupid to me when you look at the point of a name code. The point of a code name is that only people that are part of the discussion gets it and that people outside of it will only understand it with the full context once the project is revealed. In that case, looking at pokemon name code history, it's only with the context of the game that we managed to understand those. Thinking that Gaia means that it's going to be in a greece inspired region is the easy answer, the first thing anyone is going to think about, and therefore, the wrong answer because it would defeat the entire point of a name code if true. This is why, imo, gen 10 being a Greece inspired region have 99% chances of being wrong.
Italian RUclipsr @cydonia actually provided an interesting theory for the gen10 games being named Wave and Wind. In the leaked files, all the placeholder names feature the first letter of the game's name in English. The only ones that don't do that are Sword and Shield, which start with the same letter, so they put the first letters of the 2 Japanese names. Well, if that's their MO, it would be consistent with gen 10, since Wave and Wind both begin with the letter W in English, and their translations in Japanese start with the letters K and N, just like in the leaked document. He's got good stuff about lore theories too, check him out!
The codename Titan actually isn't referring to the Titan pokemon in game, because in Japanese they aren't called Titan pokemon at all. In fact they are called "Nushi pokemon" which uses the exact terminology as Totem pokemon in Gen7, and this term does not mean Titan in Japanese as far as I'm concerned. The localized name "Titan Pokémon " could only come in later when the game text is handed to the localisers, which by that time the codename Titan is already a thing. There's a good chance the codename is what named this kind of boss battle in English, but ot definitely cannot be the other way around.
Swan und Momiji could also refer to the Fact that the System they were developing for was already dying/being replaced.... Like a Swan Song Just like the Leafs on am autumn tree that are slowly dying
I remember a podcast from Magic the Gathering's lead designer about how Magic's early sets often used their codenames as their final names due to getting attached to the name. To combat this, they came up with a policy to start codenaming every set with a name of a food. So now the codenames are much less related to the projects they refer to
Hayabusa was explained by GF themselves in PLA's presentation slides. The reason roughly translate to "An aspect that loses to no one, connecting all the way to Hokkaido, aiming for places never seen before". Also for N and K, since the Japanese title haven't used Japanese since gen 1 it's safe to guess english words for the titles
If it's actually Wind and Wave that's insane cause those are the name ideas me and my sister thought of for a pokemon comic we've been thinking of making for a while
I think the gen 10 cover legendaries are gonna be like the 'raidons, in that they're gonna be the vehicle the player rides to get across. In this case, a surfboard-shaped one for Nami/Wave and a windsurfing-based one for Kaze/Wind. I can totally imagine the windsurf one having some kind of frill or back-finn that acts as the sail while the surfboard one could be, idk, a torpedo or something
I don't recall if it was game freak or just fans that considered gen 5 the end of pokemon and didn't expect it to continue after it, but seeing it called project swan i just think of the term "swan song" like something was supposed to be coming to an end.
I also think that the Swan Code name also actually comes from "swan Song" as it was the last mainline pokemon game for the DS, as well as the most dense pokemon game at the time, as well as since.
For me what came to mind immediately for "Swan" was the phrase "Swan Song"; B2W2 was released after the 3DS came out so this could have been treated as one of the last big games on the DS and the last entry for Pokémon on there
I would love for the new region to be based on Greece Greek mythology has 12 main gods Starters based on 3 Box legends and master based on 3 Legendary trio based on 3 And three mythicals from DLC
I would have assumed that the codename "turtle" would refer to how turtles use ocean currents to travel long distances (like in finding nemo), which is a big parallel to how pokemon are transferred from one system to another.
I like the way Double Fine does their codenames. They name them after bars in San Francisco's Chinatown. On special occasions, they'll do a pub crawl of all the bars they've named a codename after.
It would be cool if an eventual Pokemon Legends Ultra or some other Legends game based on Ultra Beasts would have a code name that relates to the color black. Necrozma is known as UB_Black after all (Even though it’s not technically an Ultra Beast).
Also for Kujira there is a frensh metal band called Gojira and one of their most popular songs is called Flying Whales….and Gojira was the band that stood in the window frames at the olympic games last year. Amazing band btw
turtles can also relate to the storage systems because of how, in many cultures, they represent longevity, and these storage systems are, after all, a long-term safe space for all your important to keep mons
15:42 Ah I know this one, it's one of followups to Pokemon Battrio right? Hm, I know Marveous released Naruto Emblem Battle over here recently, I wonder if we will also get one of these too? Or is Takara Tomy's involvement complicating things somehow?
As well for Unite being the only game you can deck out your pokemon in rather lavish Costumes. Even though they say its Holowear, its clothes, and extravagant ones for sure.
16:07 "Wiener" is not a mispronunciation. Austrians do not call their city "Vienna". That's just the english exonym. Austrians themselves call it "Wien". "Wiener" is short for "Wiener Würstchen" or "Vienna Sausages."
Personally, I would love to see a Greek-based Pokémon and I've seen a couple of Greek Fakemon region concepts. I would also love to see a dolphin Pokémon as either a water-type starter or one of the box legendaries, since dolphins are the national animal of Greece. Plus, there are a ton of famous creatures and deities from Greek mythology that would make excellent Pokémon.
Heres my guess for the code name "Synapse" Pokemon Scarlet and violets DLC introduced the syncro mechanic with the blueberry academy, which is quoted to "sync your mind with your pokemon" maybe in the new game we are going to be playing as the pokemon where the trainers are controlling them with this technology, and each pokemon could work as a specific role [tank, DPS, support, ect] could be the "Synapse" is the connecting point between the trainer and the pokemon we play as
Funny anecdote about pokemon let's go. I have a friend who previously played and beat pokemon let's go now introducing their child to pokemon with it. They were completely unaware of the local co-op feature of it... blew their mind.
My theory for the unreleased spinoff 'Synapse' is that it's going to do the Pokken Tournament/Ash Greninja thing, where the trainers literally connect into their pokemon's brain for battles. I *hope* it's something like a third person shooter where you choose your pokemon, and play them in a 6v6 almost 'hero shooter' like game, if we get Marvel Rivals, and then Pokemon of all games does the same thing in like, two years? I think that'd make for some of the funniest content we've seen XD
Narwals, like the tusked relative of the Beluga? LGPE, PLA, & (probably) PLZA are Pokémon catching games, which don't have all the mechanics we find in most mainline Pokémon games.
23:52 - Hear me out: perhaps Pokemon K and Pokemon N are actually Pokemon Potassium and Pokemon Nitrogen? These are two base elements from the periodic table, which was created in Greece, and have themes surrounding reacting to change and or keeping things the same, as one is a highly reactive metal and the other is, at its most basic form, relatively unreactive unless combined with other elements, which then make it reactive?
Spoiler warning to be consistent with lockstin spoiler gating the last section: a Greek based region? ok, here's the thing: something weird is that pokemon movie 12: arceus and the jewel of life features the location of Michia town, which is HEAVILY based on meteora (no, not the Linkin park album) something to note is that, many movie locations during Diamond and Pearl is based around europe. rise of darkrai is in Alamos town, based on Barcelona, Giratina and the Sky warrior's locations looks a lot like the scandanavian landscape, crown city is based on amsterdam. tho ofc, didnt stop Paldea from existing so...
Such a cool realization that all Pokémon Games have stuck to a subtle red/blue palette since the very first games. I feel like I would swap Black and White in the little graphic showing that, but it’s still cool to see the side by side. I usually only ever buy one version so I never noticed this. 😅
I have a theory you can try covering. Gigantimaxing. The show shows giant pokemon existed in ancient days ( pokemopalis gengar, alakazam and jigglypuff ) nd the giant draganite is probably that old. The pollution made giant tentacruel in the banned episode. Also a giant gulpin was shown once. What if all pokemon were giant once upon a time and gigantimaxing forces them to revert to that size? Then dynamaxing forces a more primitive form. Like pikachu returning to chonkachu. And split evos sharing a form, one that existed pre branch.
Small detail but Hawai’i is also colloquially nicknamed “the land of rainbows” and it’s no wonder since our weather allows for common rainbows and each island even has a designated color (which is referenced in the Alolan island names) Not only that, but rainbows are significant in Hawaiian tradition. It’s believed that rainbows are the union between the sky father Wākea and the earth mother Papahānaumoku. Another story talks about Hina, the goddess who lives on the moon, who was a master kapa cloth maker and many depictions of her have her sitting in the image of the moon with a long trail of kapa cloth coming from her kua lāʻau (anvil) being dyed in brilliant rainbow colors In Mānoa valley on Oʻahu, there was believed to be a beautiful chiefess named Kahalaopuna, who was represented by a rainbow. Her father was Kahaukani, the great wind of Mānoa valley, and her mother was Tuahine, the gentle rain of Mānoa. Kahalaopuna was very beautiful and sought after even though she was paired with her husband Kauhi, however due to rumors and jealous lies, Kauhi continuously killed his wife for her perceived infidelity, despite her owl ‘aumakua resurrecting her every time. One other legend talks about twin chiefesses, Lāʻie-i-ka-wai and Lāʻie-lohelohe, who had to be separated and hidden since birth but were still connected by a rainbow that would connect end to end to each other Not only that, but if you spend enough time in Honolulu alone, you’ll see rainbows on almost everything: the buses, the college sports teams, the hotels (see the iconic Rainbow Tower of the Hilton Hawaiian Village resort) there’s even a popular local restaurant called Rainbow Drive In (hell the school I graduated from is literally the Hawaiian word for rainbow)
10:48 I really dislike the company's misleading advertising here. First of all, the reason magnesium is sold with calcium is because magnesium reduces your body absorbing calcium, so extra calcium is being included to counteract it, since most ppl don't bother to look up these details when buying supplements. Calcium can linger in your body and if you don't pee it out it can deposit in your MUSCLE tissue which is as bad as it sounds. This can also happen if you are low in vitamin K which is needed to metabolise calcium properly. This is why you should drink water with your supplements! If you don't pee out excess vitamins they can build up to toxic levels in your body! Remember you are also getting vitamins and minerals naturally from your food and you might be taking supplements your body doesn't actually need! Most absorption in your body also happens in your small intestines which you need water and fibre to keep flowing smoothly and painlessly through. I say this as someone who has an inability to properly absorb calcium as a result of long COVID, who didn't properly consult healthcare professionals before self-treating and now has nerve damage in her leg muscles from taking calcium supplements without vitamin K. Everyone, please consult your local Pharmacist before taking supplements, tell them everything you are already taking including prescriptions and other supplements. Or if you can't do that, please go to a trusted web source and look up "drug interactions" with whatever you are already taking and what you want to start. Seriously, doing this could save you both money and pain in your future. Don't be like me!

Just like the Leafs on am autumn tree that are slowly dying
I remember a podcast from Magic the Gathering's lead designer about how Magic's early sets often used their codenames as their final names due to getting attached to the name. To combat this, they came up with a policy to start codenaming every set with a name of a food. So now the codenames are much less related to the projects they refer to
I want greek mythos pokemon in gen 10 so badly--plus, having a zeus and posideon cover leaves room for the "third" game having hades
Ikkaku - Narwhal: a whale with an extended tooth => Pokemon ZA: a kalos-based game set after the original X & Y games like an extension. 23:06
I could imagine an entire group of legendaries based on the Greek gods
"ZZZ"
"Zenless Zone Zero?"
"No, Pokemon Sleep"
Now Im upset Codename:Rodeo was scrapped. If it is like you said, that would be a freaking fantastically fun game if done properly.
Might come back
@peteynutt4104 That would be awesome
4:54 from now on I will only be calling pokemon home, Megaturtle.
About PLA being Hayabusa : You also get to ride being carried by a giant bird!
code name gaia :
exploring underwater might lead to an atlantis based area too
you know who is Gaia's husband? Uranus
Sonic frontiers kinda dodged this joke by using a different spelling of it, Ouranos
@@TheHammerGuy94 the Titans of Both Sky and Earth
15:25 I love Urshifu's prevo, Cubchoo! He's so underrated!
15:24 I'm pretty sure that's Kubfu not Cubchoo 😅
14:59 Except for the part where it was an _entire half of the game_ sold separately.
As a Greece mythology enthusiast, GODS I hope we get a Greece region in Gen 10
If it's actually Wind and Wave that's insane cause those are the name ideas me and my sister thought of for a pokemon comic we've been thinking of making for a while
20:48 Saying cute and all then randomly shows off Obelisk The Tormentor! 🤣
Moe in Dutch also means tired so that could also be a reason
Wait wait "moe" is Dutch for tired... interesting.., with enough imagination it kinda looks like "müde" the German word for that 😊
Wow it's like if germanic languages were related or something @@AH-xf3by
I think the gen 10 cover legendaries are gonna be like the 'raidons, in that they're gonna be the vehicle the player rides to get across.
For me what came to mind immediately for "Swan" was the phrase "Swan Song"; B2W2 was released after the 3DS came out so this could have been treated as one of the last big games on the DS and the last entry for Pokémon on there
Yeah I remember playing something similar in Singapore, I think it's called Pokémon Tretta.
I would love for the new region to be based on Greece
Greek mythology has 12 main gods
Starters based on 3
Box legends and master based on 3
Legendary trio based on 3
And three mythicals from DLC
I would have assumed that the codename "turtle" would refer to how turtles use ocean currents to travel long distances (like in finding nemo), which is a big parallel to how pokemon are transferred from one system to another.
Swan Song makes so much sense as the last sprite based mainline games and the last games on the DS
I like the way Double Fine does their codenames. They name them after bars in San Francisco's Chinatown. On special occasions, they'll do a pub crawl of all the bars they've named a codename after.
I'm personally hoping for a Caribbean region.
Codenames make a game interesting behind the scenes and part of the development to.
Another possibility for gen 10 could also be Scandinavia. Just for the island part(only Sweden has over 200000 islands) and the wind and sea(vikings)
1:38 *SWAN SONG. IT IS A SWAN SONG.*
Amazing band btw
the star Rigel is also in the south-east corner of Orion; the Isle of Armor is east if Galar, while the Crown Tundra is towards the south
Personally, I would love to see a Pokemon spin-off game where you run and manage a Pokemon Daycare, even if it's just an app game like Pokemon Sleep
turtles can also relate to the storage systems because of how, in many cultures, they represent longevity, and these storage systems are, after all, a long-term safe space for all your important to keep mons
Dang, Pokémon Rodeo sounds cool.
15:42 Ah I know this one, it's one of followups to Pokemon Battrio right? Hm, I know Marveous released Naruto Emblem Battle over here recently, I wonder if we will also get one of these too? Or is Takara Tomy's involvement complicating things somehow?
Another point about Sword and Shield's dlc being named after a bright star, it added the Galarian Star Tournament to those games
Or for a citizen of Wien
Personally, I would love to see a Greek-based Pokémon and I've seen a couple of Greek Fakemon region concepts. I would also love to see a dolphin Pokémon as either a water-type starter or one of the box legendaries, since dolphins are the national animal of Greece. Plus, there are a ton of famous creatures and deities from Greek mythology that would make excellent Pokémon.
Heres my guess for the code name "Synapse"
Pokemon Scarlet and violets DLC introduced the syncro mechanic with the blueberry academy, which is quoted to "sync your mind with your pokemon" maybe in the new game we are going to be playing as the pokemon where the trainers are controlling them with this technology, and each pokemon could work as a specific role [tank, DPS, support, ect]
could be the "Synapse" is the connecting point between the trainer and the pokemon we play as
Funny anecdote about pokemon let's go.
14:52
Thank you. I didn’t realize Rigel was the name of an actual star. I only remember Rigel 7 as the planet the aliens from the Simpsons are from
Narwals, like the tusked relative of the Beluga?
LGPE, PLA, & (probably) PLZA are Pokémon catching games, which don't have all the mechanics we find in most mainline Pokémon games.
If Gen 10 has an ocean theme, I hope Lugia will change into a water/flying type.
If only... But I guess we have better chances getting a Galarian Rapidash for Christmas 😭
Disappointed you can't date a vampire in Pokemon: Swan.
Spoiler warning to be consistent with lockstin spoiler gating the last section:
a Greek based region?
ok, here's the thing: something weird is that pokemon movie 12: arceus and the jewel of life features the location of Michia town, which is HEAVILY based on meteora
(no, not the Linkin park album)
something to note is that, many movie locations during Diamond and Pearl is based around europe.
rise of darkrai is in Alamos town, based on Barcelona, Giratina and the Sky warrior's locations looks a lot like the scandanavian landscape, crown city is based on amsterdam.
tho ofc, didnt stop Paldea from existing so...
If gen ten is based on Greece then the complete treo has to have a Hades mon that's fire/ghost type
Gaia coming after Titan is also very interesting; Gaia was the mother of the Titans in Greek mythology
Small detail but Hawai’i is also colloquially nicknamed “the land of rainbows” and it’s no wonder since our weather allows for common rainbows and each island even has a designated color (which is referenced in the Alolan island names)
Not only that, but rainbows are significant in Hawaiian tradition. It’s believed that rainbows are the union between the sky father Wākea and the earth mother Papahānaumoku. Another story talks about Hina, the goddess who lives on the moon, who was a master kapa cloth maker and many depictions of her have her sitting in the image of the moon with a long trail of kapa cloth coming from her kua lāʻau (anvil) being dyed in brilliant rainbow colors
In Mānoa valley on Oʻahu, there was believed to be a beautiful chiefess named Kahalaopuna, who was represented by a rainbow.
One other legend talks about twin chiefesses, Lāʻie-i-ka-wai and Lāʻie-lohelohe, who had to be separated and hidden since birth but were still connected by a rainbow that would connect end to end to each other
Not only that, but if you spend enough time in Honolulu alone, you’ll see rainbows on almost everything: the buses, the college sports teams, the hotels (see the iconic Rainbow Tower of the Hilton Hawaiian Village resort) there’s even a popular local restaurant called Rainbow Drive In (hell the school I graduated from is literally the Hawaiian word for rainbow)
16:10 Actually, Wiener is the german word (and pronounciation) for vienna sausage.
Not exactly, as W in german is pronounce as a V
20:48: Suddenly, Obelisk jumpscare. XD
You actually speculated that gen 10 would be in newzealand which would fit the island theme
The Swans also are related to the number 2 because of the position they take to swim in the water. Pretty on the nose but it could be also a reason
Ikkaku is a reference to ikkakumon, a nod to the fact that mega evolution is basically a digimon thing
Yes code name: swan could be a reference to the black swan theory OOORRR IT COULD BE A REFERENCE TO THE INFLUENTIAL NO WAVE, GOTHIC, NEOFOLK AND POST ROCK BAND SWANS, FORMED IN NEW YORK, THE INSPIRATION OF THE UNOVA REGION
Regarding Legends Arceus being codenamed Hayabusa: I think it at least has something to do with the Shinkansen bullet train route from Tokyo to Hokkaido being named Hayabusa.
