0:55 - nice to see right out the gate directions to ignore CR and scale challenges to what your team can actually do, not what the books guess they can do. Bravo!

I'm a new player and I remember when a group of us who were learning to DM went to make our own one-shot, I was worried about what CR to use, how to determine if it was going to be too hard for the party, and then I tried to figure out how much XP they would get for the whole one-shot. Had no idea.
I picked something whose CR was just a touch higher than the average level of the group, like a level 8 for a group of 5s, I kept monitoring the boss/mob HP and how they were doing, and it all worked just fine. It turned out pretty sweet. Didn't worry about most of that.

I always allow players to hot swap their pcs. Regardless of their level or story reasons.

Are we all here to have fun? What this character is not fun... change characters

Im a first time dm and am running the waterheist campaign. A player fo mine wanted to have a character that is half duck that wants a duck army and is called Mary Queen of Ducks for giggles. I said yeah that will be fun and now i have implemented it. The half duck just gets half elf stats. She became a duck because she was kidnapped by a wizard (for money) and there she was turned into a duck due to some magical artifact and escapes. She already was friends with the ducks of the pond she was allowed to go. So her only two friends are ducks, but one day they get killed which fills her with rage and now her wish is to have a duck army, because then noone could ever kill her ducks again. This is all the short version mind you. In fact Mary is the lost daughter of the two Gralhunds in the waterdeep series. I just named them differently: they are now called Stuart. Since Mary queen of scots is called Mary Stuart irl. Mary queen of ducks only remembers her first name. The stuarts are rich and that's why mary qas originally kidnapped. Now, we are all history students, so surely my player will realize as soon as i say the stuarts. But maybe she won't, as several characters have historical names.
I think I have understood one core concept of being a good dm: take what players want and implement it in a fun way. Now the crazy duck army character will be faced with the question of whether she wants to help her parents to the gold (i make them more ambitious and important) and live with them or if she still wants the gold for her duck army.

It's not so easy to find another game. I'm in the GMT+8 TZ and have been looking for 8 months for a game.

Tbh i feel like it depends on the group tbh that’s like saying just take a girl to the movies she will like you tbh there isn’t really that much advice tbh the only advice you can give is talk to your players
