Honestly man, a small part of me was happy to see you struggle this hard and rage out vs Friede. You've just been so fucking good and consistently smashing through bosses in this game, there was a little bit of catharsis in seeing you really hit a classic Dark Souls brick wall! Still really impressive play all round, especially to get to the end of 2nd mode on your first try - keep up the great work!
Idk if you noticed while editing but there was indeed a summon sign outside Friede and it was a special one because it appears even without an ember. If you want to know, it was Gael. Killing Ludleth gives you insight in his character. He states with pride how he became a Lord of Cinder, how you should not betray everyone for the Dark ending, but once he's back at Firelink he's either sleeping or half sleep talking about how difficult it is to have that responsability and shows you how the doubts about the fire don't even escape somemone like him. Also, there's dialogue you can have with the painting girl after killing Friede and reloading the area, so it is available know if you return.
Yoel and Yuria were from the Sable Church of Londor, Yuria being one of the three sisters who founded it. Elfriede is the second one and the third one is Liliane, according to the dark Londor miracle tome, but we never meet her in the game. Friede has unique dialogue if you are the Lord of Hollows, although in effect she still just tells you to leave and go back to your own world.
An important note for you to consider! - You havn't actually done everything at Ariandel DLC, you still have a few things left to do there - Doing what's left of the main game, including the final boss, is in my opinion essential before doing the second DLC. The reasons are better to not be told but it's basically intededed to be that way.
The lady that you don't have around any more, the one that appeared after Yoel, you should seek out video of her dialogue after meeting Sister Friede. I think it might be enlightening to the whole Painted plot.
59:40 well, the Sable Church is mostly unknown to you because you ended Yuria's questline early. The Sable Church of Londor is the organisation in charge of the hollows of Londor, Yuria was a head sister of the Sable Church.
bit over half way through the episode and im amazed you havent noticed the summon sign, i think you will every time youre outside the boss room again, and somehow it continues to evade your notice xD
Take comfort in knowing I wouldn't have summoned anyway, but out of interest who was it? Outside of this mysterious Uncle Gael we've been hearing about I can't think who it would be.
@@LiquidBlitzPlays Gael and he only shows up for the second phase (you edited your comment since lol): well he's the guy in red who handed you the piece of fabric in the Cathedral of the Deep that lead you to the painted world in the first place. I reckon you would have recognized his silhouette at the summoning sign!
@@LiquidBlitzPlays no worries, didnt figure youd go for it anyway! it was indeed Uncle Gael, or "Slave Knight Gael" as the summon sign refers to him. its an fairly unique summon as he doesnt appear right away, but the summon sign instead says he'll be summoned "later at another location" which actually refers to him being summoned into the battle once the 2nd phase starts. he's also the fellow who originally sucked you into the painting back at the cathedral of the deep. figured thatd be worth a mention as it was so long ago now! love the videos as always, cant wait for the next one!!
The funny thing about the kick controls complaint is I'm currently rewatching your Dark Souls playthrough, and you were already remarking on a similar issue back then. so your observation is better than you think!
Congrats on beating (what I think is) the hardest souls boss! There are one or two in the next DLC that are close runner-ups, but Sister Freide is one I have yet to beat without summons. BTW... that chapel sounds like it's on fire now. I wonder if there's an NPC to talk to. Maybe one who wanted to see flame.

I've always said that the problem with these multi-phase bosses is having to refight the first phase even when that makes no sense. Do the wooden wall divisions get un-burned? Does Ariandel get chained back to the ground? They should have buffed each phase slightly, and then had them work like 3 boss fights in a row. Keeping progress between each fight.
Very slight spoiler concerning the eyes: it's safe to give them, they don't lock you out of anything, they just unlock an additional option at some point.
Bro took a break to reverse hollowing lol. Good job on Friede, she is arguably the hardest boss in the game. It would be interesting to hear the order in which you will be tackling the remaining content.
Finishing up Frostyland, then doing "dragon" stuff whatever that may be, then lobbing the cinder on the throne and possibly ending the game? Then Ringed City DLC.
I don't think beings are usually born into or 'from' the painting. More that they are sent there, once they become forlorn. I could be wrong though. I don't think it's really a geographical location as much as a separate plane, literally existing inside of a painted work.
@LiquidBlitzPlays yeah, you mentioned that in the playthrough. I find that one terribly interesting! Like perhaps he was created as part of and in the same creative work as the painting itself? Which I guess would make him more of a construct than a being? God I love these games.
And if he was born of an inhabitant living in the painted world, which now I'm thinking might have been the case from the text, WHO?!?!! Someone we know? And does it specify which painted world? The lore is so juicy.

I've often found you way too passive on some bosses. Seems your playstyle paid off on Friede. Really well done, this boss absolutely rekt my greedy ass on my first playthrough! 🤣
On your first attempt you must have been a few hp short of getting the kill, it didn't do the sound effect of when an enemy's hp hits 0 and he kept moving after it. Also it's Sister Friede and Father Ariandel and they're in a church, so it's religious titles, they're not family
I'm sure you know this by now but father ariandel isn't literally friede's dad, biological or otherwise. it's more a religious term in the same way that she's a 'sister'
Man this game is so boring to watch. Even in the pinnacle of boss fights because its just a fucking roll spam simulator. Atleast DS2 punishes you for abusing rolls. In ds3 you're never in any true danger unless you're brain dead or doing a challenge run that limits HP and/or Endurance because you can just roll spam out of it. Literally no skill involved. We can hear the button press spams.

The double scythe grab is the absolute coolest grab attack in the series. It's so damn beautiful.
Ariandel is not her father, she meant that in the church like terms as in pastor.
Notice how it trolls you by giving you that titanite slab at the end of phase 2 making you think its over and then it pulls an uno reverse card.
Oh man! The pain was real with this boss. Don't forget to go back and talk to the lady upstairs. Congratulations.

It's easy to be punished for abusing rolls in DS2 when your roll s are limited even more than for DS1's fat roll.
