I'm not trying to be funny. Snowflake was born in the wild in 1964 or 1966. After he died at 40, samples of his blood were sent to a lab in the hopes that it could be discovered why he had a lack of pigmentation. It was discovered that the DNA sequencing showed that Snowflake's father mated with his niece.
Oh man, I was reading the comments and saw the one about Michael and thought it was cleaver. Then I saw him at the end of the video and couldn't stop laughing because I didn't expect it xD
Actually, it was recently discovered that the albino gorilla, Snowflake, was the product of the mating between an uncle and niece. I read this a couple of days ago.
I totally didn't expect that ending. Michael doesn't really fit in with these animals though, because his skin/hair wasn't naturally white (well, maybe if we saw him age into his 70s and up then his hair might've gone naturally white).
@grace2568 Good post, but it should be noted that often times it is not a lack of pigment that causes albinism, but rather, a lack of "deposition enzymes" that actually put the pigment where it is supposed to go. To be lacking the pigments typically requires specific mutations in multiple genes, whereas the deposition mutation only requires one mutation, so it is more likely. In humans, it is caused by a lack of enzymes along the melanin pathway, such as tyrosine hydroxylase.
Its not mysteries, just a mutation in the DNA that causes the cells to stop making the normal colors that the animal is supposed to have. And some of them like the white fox and white wolf are just different species.
Actually White Foxes, Wolves, Tigers and Owls aren't a Mystery. They come in those colours naturally. And White Lions are becoming more common in captivity. As for the others who are born white, have pink skin and red eyes are Albino's. =)
Wha'? There aren't a lot of white tigers, though, they're extremely rare in the wild because they're not very well camouflaged and the genetic mutation that causes it itself, is rare, not to mention it's still extremely rare in captivity. White tigers aren't albino. They do have "colour genes", if they didn't, then their eyes would be red. Their eyes have pigment in the iris.
Okay white micheal just make me laugh cause i didn't expect that coming tho .
thats cold micheal at the end lol
