These are my favorite patches on the Ultranova! I guess I don't really like the Wubby-wub-wub basses and the scritchy-scratchy in your face leads. Everything has its place, but I am more into the timbres that change over time or sound similar to real instruments. Great job showing off the Ultranova as an instrument that can do much more than just Sawtooth with a filter!
Thanks for a very useful demo. Virtually all of the other demos are electronica-oriented. I'm glad there is a good assortment of "Bread and butter" pop sounds. Some of them have kind of an additive or resynthesized flavor, which isn't bad.
Wish I saw this video months ago. The guitar center didn't have a demo unit or even one in stock to try out. The sounds on this are so cool. Might have to save up for a used one. But I don't regret buying my Nord Lead 2x when I couldn't find one of these locally.
Thanks for this video. I just bought Mininova and I was bit disappointed by how many of default presets are those 2010s EDM noises. I am going to use this video as shopping list for more usable presets. Also I need to admire your playing skills again - you can really use even somewhat cheesy presets (e.g. Parisian Lunch).

Hey guys, do anybody oft you know how to geht this sounds in the mininova? Since its the same Maschine inside (at least its said so) and the sound paches availiable for the ultra fit with the mininova, I think this should be possible, shouldnt it?
LOVE Your site & RUclips channel (definitely in my all-time top 25 channels ever!). I have a huge question, & it is in regards with the amazing Novation Ultranova synthesizer. I bought it used, premium condition, & one major section of the synth seems not to function properly. My issue is with the Arpeggiator. The "Hold", & "Settings Work", but it does not play any Arpeggios. I must be doing something wrong or missing something. I have a lot of gear, including the Ultranova Remote SL 37 MK2. I love the build & sound qualities of Novation gear. Regarding my issue with the Arpegiator, do I need to do a Factory Reset? If so, how do i do this. I have been struggling to find assistance into this matter, however without success. If there is a way to simply reset or adjust only the Arpegiator, that of course would be the best outcome, but at this stage, I am open to any suggestions. You are one of the most knowledgeable, humble & amazing synthesizer brains out there, & I definitely trust your knowledge & information. Any help into this matter would be greatly appreciated. I could in turn offer my services in Marketing, Corporate Identity Packaging, &c. I hope that You, Your Family & Friends are all doing well, both here & in Italy my friend. Hi, Stephen, thank you, I sold the UltraNova so I can't check at the moment, but perhaps the arpeggiator is set to disabled? From the manual: "ARP controls: the ON, SETTINGS and LATCH buttons control the UltraNova’s Arpeggiator functions. The Arp Menu (one page) is displayed by pressing the SETTINGS button, the ON button enables/disables the arpeggiator and the LATCH button applies the arpeggiator effect to the last note(s) played continuously, until a subsequent key is pressed. LATCH can be pre-selected so that it is effective as soon as the Arpeggiator is enabled."

Hello hello, they are both great keyboards to be used for synth sounds and programming, but one thing to notice is that the Ultranova has aftertouch, and the Gaia doesn't - so if that's important to you while using it as a MIDI controller, it's one thing to keep in consideration for choosing

BMR Studio I might be wrong as I've never played with either in the flesh, but the front panel of the peak is as big as the front panel of the supernova isn't it? unless you have the kB version! even then I think it's got more hands on control and less menu diving?

I kept the Nova desktop and the KS Rack but added a great Supernova II keyversion and the little Supernova :-)) Hooked on Novation now... I love them !!!
I have been a huge fan of your RUclips site for years; always premium content, quality & fantastic topics, great explanations, etc. I have many synthesizers, a couple of samplers, workstations, etc. I recently bought a premium Novation Ultranova synthesizer (to add to my Novation ReMote 37SL MKII; I absolutely live their build quality & sound architecture). I have only one issue:: ▪︎How to I get the Arpeggiation to work? U have followed what videos I could fund, & still no dice. I know like most electronics, if one key or button isn't or is pressed, then it can unscrew things up. I press the "ARP" button, I use the "Patch Browse" to locate premium "ARP" PAtches. I even go into "ARP + ARP SETTINGS", & try to set parameters, still nothing works. I have tried using the "Latch" button, & tried using it along with "Chord Mode", to no avail. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated into this matter. Thank you so much in advance. Keep up your amazing videos, as they inspire creativity & ideations in me. This is a cute little synth that was a little underrated ten years ago. Just switch of internal effects and send it thru something Strymon or Boss 500 series.
I cant understand why the digital synth don't have piano sound. I have the ultranova and its great for what I need it but I want 1 good sound of piano for a couple of songs and I don't want to carry an extra keyboard for it.
@@thedjruiner You are right. I am not a keyboardist. I play guitar and I have the ultranova to record some loops and play some melodies. I don't want to carry a big keyboard with me. I would be happy with a simple piano sound. not a grand piano.
There are two or three electric piano sounds. You could try to replicate the sound of a piano using triangle waves. After all this is a synth. If you are looking for a realistic acoustic piano sound you should probably look elsewhere.
Man , now i really wanna get one again. Did they fix the issues with the pitch wheel latency though? It was a really big turn off and the reason why i sent back my unit.
I have looked at a number of youtube clips with the novation and not one demo the vocoder function which I have struggled to work out! Maybe a sequence of steps or info would help greatly, as the instructions are not helpful. cheers.
All you need to do is select one of the Vocoder patches, and play keys on the keyboard while talking/singing at the same time in the connected microphone
I was actually meeting someone today to buy one of these, seemed like a really nice synth. Now that I've heard the thin and with horrible timbres, I decided to buy a Korg. Thanks for saving me from making a purchase mistake.
The Mininova has basically the same engine just slightly updated, Ultranova patches even works with the Mini. Only reason to get the Ultranova instead would be for the larger form factor.

how do i get these factory patches onto the mininova? also, do you have issues with the ultranova sounding overly compressed or almost sounding distorted at times? even though I am cutting off fx and changing mixer settings I can't get it to go away.

Monotimbral means you can only use one sound / patch at the time when used in a MIDI setup. Multitimbral means you can play different sounds / patches at the same time, from the same unit when used with MIDI.

I can't get to grasp the missing link between learning piano and taking that knowledge to a synth keyboard. It's as if my experience in piano doesn't apply to synth playing. Is there a better way to learn to play synths than learning piano? Do you have a specific workflow or method to learn to do what you do in your videos?
Have you thought about learning the basics of the synthesis? There are few universal components to the synthesiser: 1. Sound source. Classic oscillator usually use finite amount of raw waves to produce sound. You can detune them as you like, but 5ths, 4ths and Octaves are most common. 1 is single tone, 2 can give chorus effect, 3 can give one note chords. 'Planing' harmony is innate to synths 2. Filters. 3. Modulators. 4. Amplifier. Modulators can apply to any part of the synth, but usually they are predifined. To learn this basic stuff try to find virtual modular (you may try VCV rack which is free) and learn all the basics there Another part to synthesis is closely related with electric sound behaviour. Simple example of Guitar+Volume knob > Amp input Gain knob+master knob gives you different sounds, and they can still be at the same volume, SPL-wise. Why is that? Last part is related to recording/arrangement. Its the layering and understanding how parts interact with the whole. How to categorise sounds this skills apply to all techniques across the daw/synth world, including sampling, and audio editing. Write me if you're interested in further discussion
The Ultranova is easy to program on the front or with the software, has an audio interface built in, can be powered by usb bus, has the vocoder and is better for live performance, but it's on the bulky side. The Blofeld is 16 part multitimbral, has more wavetables, plus you can create and import your own, and it has an amazing soundset from Don Solaris available. I've yet to use a Blofeld, but it's definitely on my want list.
I really wanted the Blo for my 2nd modern synth, but ON A FIXED INCOME, i HAVE TO GET WHATS ON EXTENDED FINANCING. i THINK THE bLOFELD WOULD HAVE BEEN PERFECT FOR ME.

I love the ulranova. It's so versitile in sound and easy to programm, even without a ton of knobs. the vocooder isn't the best but it's nice to have.

Conflicted between this, a Bloefeld and a Virus C if I bought another modeling synthesizer.

how do i get these factory patches onto the mininova? also, do you have issues with the ultranova sounding overly compressed or almost sounding distorted at times? even though I am cutting off fx and changing mixer settings I can't get it to go away.
The patches are available at the Novation website. All you need to do is to send the sysex data from your computer to the synth

You shouldn't hear any distortion - try different headphones to make sure it's not them. If it still persists, there's something wrong with the output
Hi, Is there any multi timber on this synth? I'm using the LogicPro and can I send Midi to play out the sounds from UltraNova, how many tracks it can playback at a time?

Yes, mono-timbral.
Seems it can be used for both "ordinary" keyboards sounds as well as a synth, - i read it is monotimbral, and what is that comparing with multitimbral? greetings, Levi in sweden
Monotimbral means you can only use one sound / patch at the time when used in a MIDI setup. Multitimbral means you can play different sounds / patches at the same time, from the same unit when used with MIDI.

I can't get to grasp the missing link between learning piano and taking that knowledge to a synth keyboard. It's as if my experience in piano doesn't apply to synth playing. Is there a better way to learn to play synths than learning piano? Do you have a specific workflow or method to learn to do what you do in your videos?
Have you thought about learning the basics of the synthesis?
There are few universal components to the synthesiser:
1. Sound source. Classic oscillator usually use finite amount of raw waves to produce sound. You can detune them as you like, but 5ths, 4ths and Octaves are most common. 1 is single tone, 2 can give chorus effect, 3 can give one note chords. 'Planing' harmony is innate to synths
2. Filters.
3. Modulators.
4. Amplifier.
Modulators can apply to any part of the synth, but usually they are predifined.
To learn this basic stuff try to find virtual modular (you may try VCV rack which is free) and learn all the basics there
Another part to synthesis is closely related with electric sound behaviour. Simple example of Guitar+Volume knob > Amp input Gain knob+master knob gives you different sounds, and they can still be at the same volume, SPL-wise. Why is that?
Last part is related to recording/arrangement. Its the layering and understanding how parts interact with the whole. How to categorise sounds this skills apply to all techniques across the daw/synth world, including sampling, and audio editing.

Should I get this or the Blofeld? Also, how did you do that Rhodes patch?
The best way is try both and see which you like better. These are stock patches on the Novation
SynthMania I need to wait for a Blofeld to appear at my local Sam Ash store.
The Ultranova is easy to program on the front or with the software, has an audio interface built in, can be powered by usb bus, has the vocoder and is better for live performance, but it's on the bulky side. The Blofeld is 16 part multitimbral, has more wavetables, plus you can create and import your own, and it has an amazing soundset from Don Solaris available. I've yet to use a Blofeld, but it's definitely on my want list.
I really wanted the Blo for my 2nd modern synth, but ON A FIXED INCOME, i HAVE TO GET WHATS ON EXTENDED FINANCING. i THINK THE bLOFELD WOULD HAVE BEEN PERFECT FOR ME.
