The USA is never going to allow Chinese vehicles in their market without them being built in America which is literally what China demands. China doesn’t apply tariffs to Tesla because the cars are built in China that’s the difference and China actually places substantial tariffs on imported cars into their country. If you want a model S or X in China the tariffs are large. Look I’m a Nio investor but playing out that the USA is bullying China is ridiculous and absolutely void of the facts. North America and Europe should demand the exact same thing China has for decades, here is our market if you supply jobs to our citizens we should expect no less. What Trump is doing is trying to get China on board with low taxes in America you are fooling yourself if you think he will bring down the tariffs enough to make it viable for China to import but unlike the previous administration it looks like he maybe willing to do business with them as long as the cars are made in America.
I hear you but you do know that He said in an interview this week that tarrif might not be that aggressive like he had said last time, which I suppose it means there us a door for negotiation but again let's wait and see
@ yes he is going to soften the tariffs on China but neither Europe or North America will give up there automotive market for free, and the reality is in about five years China will have completely shifted to pure EV meaning no more growth runway in China for their new EVs Europe and the North America market the other two major markets will likely still have 50% maybe a bit more to steal from ice vehicles and China is going to want an opportunity to take some of that market share. The longer China drags their feet on building manufacturing in these two regions the more Teslas first mover advantage will take hold with consumers in these markets. The vast majority of Tesla owners will buy Tesla as their next vehicle that is already the case today. Where as if you go from a Toyota or Volkswagen to your first EV being a BYD or ONVO for example there is a reasonably good chance you will be loyal for your next car or recommend to family or friends. I think you and I can agree EVs are 10x better than ice so that experience for consumers in Europe and North America is now entrenched with Tesla. Just so you know the brand loyalty for Tesla actually out scores Apple so the odds that a Tesla owner will ever give a China branded car a chance is extremely low. The easier route is to get a Toyota or VW owner to buy their first EV from BYD, ONVO, Nio or other quality Chinese brand. Right now it’s not a big deal but this year more affordable Tesla vehicles come out just like ONVO this is going to smash legacy automotive but also build even more loyalty to Tesla in Europe and North America so the sooner Nio and other China brands come the better for them because stealing a Tesla owner will be 10x more difficult than stealing a legacy automotive owner.
