I love the beginning overview! Very clear on your instructions! I followed you based on your clarity!
Thank You for pointing out all the components of steering and suspension systems. I never understood the difference between Pitman arm & Idler Arm. Now I do, *idler's on the passenger side and pitman on the driver side*
You got it. Pitman always connects to the steering box. 😉 Idler just sits there idling. Take care and thanks for your comment. -Glen
Very informative video. Great under the truck footage. My idler/Pittmon arm needed to be replaced. I was under the impression you needed 1 idler arm and 1 pittmon arm for each side, but with your explanation you cleared that up for me.
You got it Rich!
You're a great teacher.WIll tackle this and dreaded pitman arm over the weekend.
Thanks and good luck. Those pitman arms can be a real tight and a challenge to remove.
@@ozzstars_cars it will obey with a grinder!!!
Good job. Easy to see what you're doing with plenty of light, unlike some videos from other guys.
Keeping it 💯. Thanks
Completed this today (thanks to this great video) My truck has approx 200,000 miles on it and I CAN HONESTLY SAY this is the best and most improved repair/replacement part that I have ever done/noticed improvement! Get it done fellas!
+S.T. ENTERTAINMENT way to go! Nice to have that new truck feeling back! Thanks for your comment
I have a 58 caddy that my parents bought in 1960. About 8 years ag I had the front end completely rebuilt. Couple weeks ago I noticed that at about 15 20 mph it felt like the front wheels were WALKING, and the steering wheel did a little continuous left right action. I had good year check it out, the idler arm was moving up and down about a quarter of an inch. I'm actually happy to so easily find out the issue, and that it is a simple fix. Thanks for your video, completed the mental picture for me. I'm waiting for the new part to show up as we speak!!
Well done. Instructions and video are clear, informative and straight to the point, and you provide several little helpful tips along the way.
Keeping it 100 on the Ozzstar channel. Thanks for your comment. -Glen

Great video. In my opinion, a puller always works faster/better than a pickle fork, provided there is room to get the puller in place. If there are space constraints, a pickle fork is the only option.
Thank you for this video!

hey thanks I had the exact same problem, also thanks for uploading 1080p
Thanks for watching Aaron! - Ozz
Excellent video quality and tutorial. I'm going to replace the Idler arm on my 2001 Lightning F150 ASAP as I hear the clunk LOL when braking at slow speeds. The torque numbers very helpful. Going to check out more of your stuff... I may do the I/O tie rods as well.

@@ozzstars_cars by the by the way I called AutoZone they had one for 104.00...... then I called Advanced Auto they had one for $53...... if I don't have the pickle fork can I use something different or do I need to buy a pickle fork...... and I subscribe to your Channel I'm definitely going to share this Channel with my friends
You can purchase a pickle fork for about $13 or a complete 3 piece set for around $32. amzn.to/2vIw2qX You will have them to use forever. :-) I would stay away from the big box Chinese suspension parts, they don't last long. You get what you pay for. Moog isn't all made in the USA but it's better quality than most. 1997-99 F150 amzn.to/2L0mXmW

COTTER PIN!!! I had my beautiful 68 mustang front end completely rebuilt in 2009. I've owned the car since 1977. About 6 months later I was driving back from L.A. to my home about 2 hours east. Doing 65 70 the whole way. I get off the freeway, go about 1 block when I hear big BANG, AND COMPLETELY lose control of the steering. Luckily i was only going about 20 mph in heavy traffic. I could feel the car literally wanting to go both left and right at the same time. Guess what, a cotter pin was missing and a nut worked it way off. If this had happened going 70 mph down the freeway......it was then I realized I either had a guardian angel with me, or that old mustang held itself together to not kill either one of us that day. !!
Wow that's got to be scary! Thanks for sharing your story with us John. Stay safe!
@@ozzstars_cars yeah, was lucky and got car stopped without hitting anything lol. When I got out and looked at the car, the left front wheel was turned about 20 degrees to the left. And the right front was about 40 degrees to the right!! Looked so WEIRD LOL. some young guys jumped out and we managed to get it out of traffic, by manually pushing on the wheels as we rolled forward very slowly. Luckily, there was no damage, just getting parts reconnected, and a very nice shiny new nut and cotter pin INSTALLED! 11 years now and the Mustang has not done anything scary again ! Thanks for the reply, enjoyed your video.
Good job Ozzsatr
Thank you Bob, appreciate your comment! -Glen
Thanks Bob
i just replaced idler arm on 99 f150 4x4 , i recommend using the "Moog" replacement part its much "beefier" than oem,has 2 Zerk-grease fittings...pretty easy job ,hardest part was getting old one off...
+Frenzy1 i always use Moog. Quality has a price. Thanks for commenting
Thanks for the video. I now know that my f150 frame is a little bent... Thats why my tie-rod ends where rubbing the frame. Your video just showed me just how bad mine is.
Wow. Bent frame is not good. Glad the video helped you out.
@@ozzstars_cars the previous owner pulled the front bumper off reversing out of a ditch. Causing the front section of the frame to buckel up.
Thanks I was using a puller now I know what to use
This pickle fork set is nice to have amzn.to/2vIw2qX. Good luck with fix, if you can let us know how it goes.
@@ozzstars_cars I did it like a champ inner, outer & the iddler arm just couldn't download pictures here but I appreciate the help brother thanks.
@@miguels.503 awesome! Your welcome.
good job thanks
Thanks for watching 57Chevy!
Great video! I've had the squeak sound coming from my Pitman/Idler arms for a good few years. I was told by a mechanic that they had a lot of play in them and should be replaced. So bad in fact that they couldn't do an alignment on my 97' 150. I've driven the truck a good number of years like this and noticed an almost delay in steering from the amount of play in them. The truck was replaced, so it's not my daily driving but still, probably not the safest thing.
Anyhow... I've been putting off doing this for years because so many people said they were a real pain. Were they joking!? You made it look easy and nothing about that was even remotely intimidating. Looking forward to ordering the Moog parts, replacing them and getting my nimble truck back to road worthiness.
Thanks for the clean, simple, straight forward video!
QUESTION: Other than the pitman/idler arms, should I be looking at replacing anything else in the steering assembly to make sure the steering is back to where it should be?
+Klaus Welch the Ford trucks at 100K miles need steering parts. The Inner and outer tie rod ends dont have grease fittings and wear out. If they are easy to twist or have play, replace them. Big improvement will be felt in steering reponse. Next the balljoint should be suspect. they need to be checked and replaced if defective. Good luck with the fix on your truck and thanks for the great comment! Take it easy
gracias y saludos...

2002 f150 xlt 4x2 I changed my idler arm this am. Bought it from NAPA. Torqued the castle nut to 65 foot lbs. Some of the shaft still showed above the center link about 3/16s. Put the cotter pin in and road tested. All is nice and tight. Do you think it is ok that a little shaft shows?
Nice great info and explanation, where did you place the jack stands when replacing the idler arm? Thanks
Placed under the frame.
Will this take care of the wandering steering? I already replaced the tie rods and have new tires and alignment.
Cliff Dukes it takes more than just tie rods and an idler arm to get proper steering control. After all components have been properly inspected and repaired, the tires have a lot to do with good steering tracking, then of course the alignment has to be done correctly.
Thanks Ozz. changing out the idler arm on my 1999 F 150 this weekend. May I borrow your pickle fork?
Security deposit required! haha Good luck with the fix
👍
what causes my truck to squeak when I'm turning it sounds like it's metal-to-metal are rubber to rubber really what causes it to squeak when I make a turn either left or right
Wish I could diagnose the problem but that's impossible thru the comment section.
most of the time its the A frame bushings....
did u have any shake in your steering wheel before you changed the old one out ?
no, more like a clunk . Thanks for watching
The auto dealer sys my idler arm is worn, ok but he has added a alignment, will replacing the arm cause misalignment?
Not if its the only part replaced. With that said maybe he is seeing something else that needs to be aligned?
To perform this diagnosis, did you jack the truck up from the frame or suspension?
The frame. Then safety stands.
@@ozzstars_cars awesome channel. Thank you greatly
Why does the oil gage fluctuate in a 99 pontiac boniville 3.8?
armando flores low engine oil or your oil pressure sensor might be goin bad.
How do u measure the bolt pattern on the idler arm? Thanks in advance.
Center to center.
Did you experience shaking while driving before the fix
Some minor vibration but mostly an audible clunk going over bumps.
@@ozzstars_cars I'm experiencing shaking at 35 miles an hour and the steering wheel is moving side to side. Not sure if it's bad tie rods
Just wondering what kind of grease do I use and how do I apply it..
i use an all purpose type grease GL-5, with a grease gun
Thanks a lot been very helpful, I'll try and do this job myself
You are welcome, good luck Joe
Would the bad idler arm cause play in the steering wheel ?
Any defective steering component will effect steering control.
I installed a moog idler, pittman, etc on my crown vic and it won't return to center. The idler seems quite stiff.
Yes sometimes they can be a little stiff when new. Did you tighten the crown nuts to the proper torque?
Hey im about to replace it on my town car did it fix the play in the steering wheel. My town car has some half assed idler arm that doesn't have a ball joint like the newer one does.
Can you add 1985-2002 Lincoln Town car to the title its the same part and drive train/platform.
PeterFied FM
Im curious, how long did your MOOG idler last?
It's still lasting, years.
Is there another name for this part? I own a 1994 f150 and advanced auto parts cant find the part.
That's because there isn't one.
@@ozzstars_cars ok thx. Im having same problem were both wheels wiggle and makes noise. Trying to figure out whats wrong and what i need.
@@platinumassasin5979 the ball joints need to be inspected.as well.
does it need an alignment after?
idler arm only replacement shouldnt require an alignment
I needed to fix my alignment. Was something done incorrectly or maybe bc of different issue?
Any idea of the specs of the two bolts for the idler arm? Thread pitch, length...etc?
Same thing I'm trying to find out mine fell off suck cause it sat and local dealership parts and service closed.if you found out lemme know thanks
can I do this without lifting the car up

Really works good removing rust bolts and nuts, here is a link: amzn.to/2NrUkOb
don't forget the cotter pin don't forget the cotter pin... Oh s*** I forgot the cotter pin
That little pin is a BiG deal! Don't forget the pin Mike. Thanks for watching!
Sorry but how do I know how much grease is enough, ..
3-5 pumps of the grease gun. When the black rubber dust boot just barely starts to swell. This will prevent grease from puking and making a mess.
Cool beans
i am a certified mechanic and i just use wd40.
You know they make better stuff then that today, 70 years later. Just saying, because Dw40 doesnt last very long as a lubricant you know. Silicone is shit but they make a thing that has Teflon in it its like DW40 on steroids.
