Aye Verb broke ALL OF THIS BATTLE RAP CONTRACT SITUATION down so INTRICATELY a while back. It's almost eerie because everything Shine said about URL was exactly what Verb said about countless other rappers. He even tried to warn the new guys coming in about things like this and most of them didn't listen. I know everyone has different life situations, but to keep seeing your peers tell the same stories yet you still end up in the same situation is wild. URL must have Dirt and possible career ending info on dudes because this sounds like some Big Red from The 5 Heartbeats type of sh!t😅
So basically, Shine is a private contractor not beholden to URL. No guarantees to him per se but he’s beholden to them as far as who he battles. And because it was blank names with upfront payment and backend fees, technically they could pay him $15k today to battle Taco Tony and $2k next month to battle Lux.

What needs to be understood by a lot of people is how deep contract law really is. In many instances contract law is above the law of the land. If you sign a contract the law of the land cannot save you and the average citizen isn't taught that Also what needs to be understood is that the business culture that he is speaking of it's not exclusive to underground rap battles or the music industry as many people believe. This is the business culture across-the-board. It doesn't matter if you were a W-2 worker or you're an independent contractor, this is happening more often than not. Profitability dictates that you spend low on resources and workers but charge high prices. This is coming from a person that had to learn the hard way.

What Math said summed it up perfectly, battle rap should be promoter-artist instead of label-artist. You can't have variety trying to mix up 1 small roster and the battlers with the highest profiles either do multiple leagues or stick to one but have bigger bags outside of battle rap.

Love this episode, I do think when you sign the check you think differently. We are 20 years in business and everybody feels like the are worth more then what they are worth. When you are a business owner you take the biggest risk, so you should receive the biggest reward. From personal experience in working with some battle rappers and some mainstream rappers, their business acumen is less then exemplary. You have to use this to push merch and your celebrity to get money. The business model is unfair to battle rappers but the RESPECT you all get can translate into bread. Peace. Stay up Shine!
