This dude was so nice back then that the other heavyweight rappers constantly wanted to see what he would do with 50+ bars. Just go back and listen to those of you who may not have been paying attention to this dude in the late 90s. You either weren't old enough yet, not born yet or you were living under a rock. Thanks to the internet, you can still hear it all. And remember, he was just a kid back then. He had to always rhyme last on a track because you would be crazy to try to spit after him in those days when he was young and hungry. I'd argue that nobody really had anything for this guy when he was in his prime.
Canibus is underrated and overlooked. His albums C of Tranquility, Melatonin Magic and Lyrical Law are fire albums that most people don’t know about. The vast majority of his songs are good. He definitely should’ve gotten more attention. One of the all time greats, easily.
Absolutely one of the best interviews in the history of hip hop.. this is epic on so many levels…. The rawness, the realness.. the admission of vulnerabilities, the scene from the front and behind the scene that makes it all tick… the love and honesty… the intelligence.. the truth… revealed… phenomenal interview!!!!! Long live the God Canibus! Long love The God Math Hoffa!! Black excellence!!!

Cannibus probably became depressed after his career went to the dumps? Then Cannibus act like he’s the victim. He started all those rap beefs and lost. Nobody was bothering Cannibus. He’s the blame, not blackballed by the industry
My favorite rapper of all time. I remember the first time I heard him, I thought it was absolutely crazy. He changed the way I listened to rap and he helped shape the way I approach life from an intellectual level.
Jedi of rap.... Canibus.. Long Live ..bar for bar the Best i heard ... I been back in my canibus bag lately. Its amazing to read the comments .. he touched alot of people !
Canibus deserves so much respect. And I hate how so many people try to revise history, saying that he was overrated. Rappers from Jay Z to Nas, Eminem to Rakim, Big Pun to DMX, the entire Wu Tang Clan, and more were all either praising him or too scared to rhyme with him. He was obviously an influence for modern day battle rap. His skills need to be known by the broader hip hop audience.
I was in UGANDA glued to the TV watching and listening to Canibus. Man bless him as an MC and as a Blackman. This man deserves his flowers for his contribution to the culture. Kind of glad he never made radio records coz his battle rap inspired us. In time he will get his blessing for the universe is infinite. Loved this conversation math. This pod is gold Fam. Salute to Math and crew for another phenomenal episode.
This was a great interview. Canibus was so honest and y'all were honest and respectful to him. He needed to get a lot of that off his chest. And the hugs were needed. 😂 You guys provided a safe space for him.
Canibus, you get Em from silence or retired or whatever, and just rap together.. It ain't too late.. Two lyrical poets , we hip hop fans from your generation, deserve to hear mature Em and mature Canibus give each other a hug, and spit your rap poetry for the sake of battle rap worldwide.
This interview was historical in hip hop. Much props to the people who put this all together. I've been listening to Canibus since I was in middle school and to still see him kicking it to this day is really cool.
Every fan of rap knows that 'bis is in the list with the greats. Shout out to Canibus man. His music reached us here in South Africa even back then. Legend
Learned ALOT about Canibus with just the clips. I'm excited to check into the full episode. Sidenote: Ya'll need more southern rap legends on the show. 8 Ball & MJG, Ghetto Mafia, Young Bloodz, Outkast Members, Goodie Mob Members, Get stories from both Northen and Southern rap artists, would be great to simultaneously getting stories and information from both, hopefully MEP can bridge the gap between southern artists and northern. How often do we hear the south and the north collaborate?? RARE!!!!! You all have the established platform, make it happen by getting them on and sharing their stories. I believe people will eventually, serendipitously gel the two cultures, southern and northern and realize ITS ALL HIP-HOP/RAP, come from the same struggle but maybe just with some different flavors in the mix. Folk stop hating on Bigga finding peace, the streets of NY clearly adopted him and he adapted to his adoption, bravo to the homie for consistently attempting to walk a different path. Dont get caught in the hype wave math hoffa, you/you all are doing the damn thing. Lets beware of allowing our egos as men to turn strong shows like this into gossip forums, and petty podcaster beef, dont want strong shows like this to turn into the male version of Ricky Lake or Wendy Williams, focued on the drama and "tea" of others. Lets keep getting the good stories of triumph, success with this hip hop game in whatever form or fashion hip hop served you/you life to elevate you to higher existences of this living world. Later on M.E.O Sincerely, K.M

Truly the most incredible man ice ever come across and seen him in the interview made me emotional coz I wish sometimes guys like him knew the truth that we admire gladiators like him, it's like knowing Jesus and Jesus didn't know he's Jesus...pure bravery and power but humble and true. If ever someone tells what I saying lol I know most people are laughing at my long crazy comment but it's all true and I wish one day to meet just to thank him personally for saving my life with just the blessing of knowing and living in a time where he lived too and we all know it's rare to see some who played the ultimate price for teaching us unknowingly that life can be a beautiful story if u give it your everything and been content with himself even though no one ever had the balls to show him that everyone know he's the God of rap and truely the king of hip hop and hip hop is sound that brings life to guys like me who never had or known the best of the best. Thank Bus! My God bless u and give u many more years and wealth , peace and contentment for giving us the same unknowingly. Long live I'll never forget u 👩👧👦👊
Not gunna to lie, this interview got me into Canibus. I can't remember which one I discovered first come to think of it..em or bus but man... as a hip hop fan I was torn and excited qt the same time to hear what was coming next with these 2!! I love the real old school era for the good time memories but my favorite era in hip hop was the mid to late 90s albums and how they were put together like a book. A beginning and end and I love the battles and the dvd/mixtape era maybe the most for content always coming out everyday!! Wish the mixtapes were still as good as the early 2000s! That said this interview is what made me relive all those feelings because canibus was a underground rapper whole could also enter the mainstream too and hearing him and ems underground stuff helped put me on to other rappers who weren't that well known at the time. I really love the hip hop culture. Everybody stay safe! Thanks for the memories!
My top 3 Canibus Studio releases 1. Rip the Jacker (2003) 2. 2000 B.C.(Before Can-I-Bus) (2000) 3. Can-I-Bus (1998) I bought all the hard copies (CDs) at least twice back when. "Rip the Jacker" is always a complete playthrough.
@@user-sd2km1js1w I revisited Mic Club before responding to your comment and yes it is very much worthy to be in my top 3 Canibus albums. I found myself replaying multiple tracks over and over again. The tracks that stood out the most to me were "Poet Laureate" and "Curriculum 101". I would place Mic Club at #3 on my list. No tracks are "skipable" (I made that up). However, Can-I-Bus has tracks that I skipped past so when I compare it to Mic Club it's not as compelling. I prefer the Stoupe production on Rip the Jacker over the Mic Club production though. I also prefer 2000 B.C. production over Mic Club production. So yea, Mic Club is a very good mention. I just had to be reminded of that.

My respect for CANIBUS shot up after his truth about Em and Stan. I love the vulnerability and it takes a real man to be strong enough to be raw. Mad respect
Only reason I think Canibus didn’t make the cut, is ‘cause he couldn’t make comercial joints. Otherwise, he would’ve taken off and dusted emcees. Edit This by far has become my favorite interview. I’m glad Canibus is in a good space with himself. I’m also glad that he’s given the platform to clear things up, and talk about his obstacles, vulnerabilities, etc through out his career. Much love and respect. The hug part was dope!
I think they didn't want him in the limelight because they had other plans for hip-hop to go in a different direction. And the super-enlightened, intellectually superior, well-rounded, masculine confident style of a rapper like Canibus didn't fit into their plans. The year 2000 all the major labels joined and formed a super conglomerate. Soon after began the shift towards digitization of music, improvement of technology but degradation of the art. They did not want an intelligent, straight Black man with advanced thought and impeccable speech to be popular. They had to do everything possible to discredit and "blackball" him.
Am with you People didn't even realize they had bigger plans for hiphop and if your face didn't fit there scope it was game over for who ever you are talented or not it was by design and our own ppl sold us out the culture is like pop really weak and soft.. peace out from England..big up math Hoffa on did 1 💯canibus

I’ve been waiting for bis to get his flowers bro. I’ve been going to and from work for many years bumping his hot 97 and clue freestyles and his features. The “I speak in frequencies” freestyle on hot 97 is still the greatest shit I ever heard in my life. It’s like a church hymn to me. Nas taking his Verse off desperados, 2nd round KO. I love this dude bro. No weird shit. I damn near cried seeing the end to this video. This shit brought closure to me as well. Salute to you math.
@@cheddarcheez9917 Canibus Verse in desperados was so ruthless that Nas took his Verse off. Said it himself. He also said bis’s “who shot ya” freestyle made him wanna quit rapping when he first heard it.
His new material is just as complex and passionate, hard beats too - Kaiju etc. Bis is a legend, a myth and essentially an author in lyric form. You can't overstate how vast his output is and how dense and epic some of his tracks are. Leave out the talk of LL, Em and beat choice.. fun to hear about but all that is distraction from his monkish lifetime dedication to hip-hop and the potential of rapping. He is a result of the 1997-1998 pinnacle of lyric culture. I'm not a superfan, but I grew up in that period, I remember how he came out of nowhere and seemed to always have the spotlight, imagine the pressure, but he re-earned it everytime. Just went through 6 or 7 albums of his, as well as that spectacular freestyle compilation from his first 2 years in the game. All the stories alongside golden age greats, from LL to Em to Nas... He was like an alien but mixed in slang and relateable yet original one-liners (some of the most visceral and memorable ever), a great sense of humor with seriousness and ambition. Definitely made a huge impression on Eminem, I can hear him in Lupe's ambitious tracks too. And the voice - truthfully nothing he says would be quite as ill without that polarizing voice he has. As with many geniuses he has made many choices that have confused people and seemed like they were designed to alienate casual fans. I can't sympathize with Dizaster's thesis that the game has moved on/"evolved" from him... I think it's more they involved around him, because his highest achievements haven't been touched, though maybe paralleled. But this hopefully sparks a re-evaluation of his catalog, esp. in light of Billboard's list that left off G-Rap, Prodigy, MF DOOM, Pharoahe Monch, Lupe, Raekwon, GZA, etc. etc. Seems like a good dude too. S/o the legend Canibus 👑

Well broken down. Well said and great comment.
Canibus is underrated and overlooked. His albums C of Tranquility, Melatonin Magic and Lyrical Law are fire albums that most people don’t know about. The vast majority of his songs are good. He definitely should’ve gotten more attention. One of the all time greats, easily.
Fait Accompli is full of brilliance as well.
Mic club curriculum was ill too

Absolutely one of the best interviews in the history of hip hop.. this is epic on so many levels…. The rawness, the realness.. the admission of vulnerabilities, the scene from the front and behind the scene that makes it all tick… the love and honesty… the intelligence.. the truth… revealed… phenomenal interview!!!!! Long live the God Canibus! Long love The God Math Hoffa!! Black excellence!!!

Dope interview! Shout to Math and co hosts and Canibus!! You will always be acknowledged Canibus for raising the bar lyrically! We love you & appreciate you still thank you!
How? Cannibus use a bunch of big words, that didn’t make sense. He even made up big words before. Cannibus look bad. He look like a alcoholic? Cannibus probably became depressed after his career went to the dumps? Then Cannibus act like he’s the victim. He started all those rap beefs and lost. Nobody was bothering Cannibus. He’s the blame, not blackballed by the industry

Dude that's something HipHop will never understand. Canibus has had impact. I don't think He himself sees it.
Jedi of rap.... Canibus..
Long Live ..bar for bar the Best i heard ...
I been back in my canibus bag lately. Its amazing to read the comments .. he touched alot of people !
Seeing Canibus in this light is awesome, and shoutout to Hoffa and the others for showing true appreciation for what Bis has done for hip-hop.
The birth of “Stan” is the most Dopest intriguing introspective origin story i ever heard in my entire f@$!ing life .I needed this Math 💯
What a great interview! Hip Hop growth is amazing to see and hear!
Except one of them😅😏

I was in UGANDA glued to the TV watching and listening to Canibus. Man bless him as an MC and as a Blackman. This man deserves his flowers for his contribution to the culture. one of my favorite interviews from one of my favorite rappers of all time. It was good to get clarity on some of the rap beefs of his and his career in the military. I understood all of the lingo and commitment he has to armed services. My uncle and Dad both retired with high ranking and respect for this country. Salute to Math and crew for another phenomenal episode.
This was a great interview. Canibus was so honest and y'all were honest and respectful to him. He needed to get a lot of that off his chest. And the hugs were needed. 😂 You guys provided a safe space for him.
Top comment.
That would be the opposite of battle rap
This interview was historical in hip hop. Much props to the people who put this all together. I've been listening to Canibus since I was in middle school and to still see him kicking it to this day is really cool.

Every fan of rap knows that 'bis is in the list with the greats. Shout out to Canibus man. His music reached us here in South Africa even back then. Legend
He's the greatest lyricist I've ever heard.
Later on M.E.O
Sincerely,
K.M

''I just needed a hug'''. Big man talk!
I named my son Germaine after canibus, following him taught me honesty, God,life, perfection, redemption, consistency, power and love. Truly the most incredible man ice ever come across and seen him in the interview made me emotional coz I wish sometimes guys like him knew the truth that we admire gladiators like him, it's like knowing Jesus and Jesus didn't know he's Jesus...pure bravery and power but humble and true. I touched her feet when he come to South Africa and blessed us with the greatest most legendary concert in Johannesburg I was front row and he looked at me lol honestly it made me beleieve I could do anything coz I saw a God and he's real I saw him and he's human like me I acknowledge after honoring him with naming my son after him.

My respect for CANIBUS shot up after his truth about Em and Stan. I love the vulnerability and it takes a real man to be strong enough to be raw. Mad respect
Props to you for putting the technical and style questions before the tabloid questions 👑
The Most satisfying interview this year.
Only reason I think Canibus didn’t make the cut, is ‘cause he couldn’t make comercial joints. Otherwise, he would’ve taken off and dusted emcees.
Edit
This by far has become my favorite interview.
Am with you
People didn't even realize they had bigger plans for hiphop and if your face didn't fit there scope it was game over for who ever you are talented or not it was by design and our own ppl sold us out the culture is like pop really weak and soft.. peace out from England..big up math Hoffa on did 1 💯canibus

What's the Nas story w/ Desperados? One of the better tracks off The Firm
@@cheddarcheez9917 Canibus Verse in desperados was so ruthless that Nas took his Verse off. Said it himself. He also said bis’s “who shot ya” freestyle made him wanna quit rapping when he first heard it.
This interview is so unintentionally funny 😂
