  • 2024 is upon us and that means new crossbow offerings to look at!
I am not sponsored by anyone! But I do share what I like and what I don't like. And I like a good coupon code to save a few bucks as much as you do (see below). My "perfect" crossbow setup these days includes:
Killer Instinct SWAT X1 (starting 2023)
Burris Oracle X Scope (since 2022)
Dragon Claw arrows from Wyvern Creations (good outfit, been buying different gear there for years, these arrows are great in the SWAT)
All of our crossbows use the following, 100% of time:
Burt Coyote Lumenoks (since 2012 or so) (save 10% on lumenok.com with coupon code BUNJIE )
Swhacker #251 3" cutting diameter crossbow broadheads (for our last 20 or 30 deer) (save 10% off select broadheads including this "perfect" model using coupon code BUNJIE2324 on their website: swhacker.com/discount/BUNJIE2324 )
Bunjie (The Original Bunjie, The O.B.) is my 2010 Excalibur Axiom that got me hooked on crossbow hunting. This was my "one gun" for more than a decade and Bunjie's reliability is the reason I ONLY hunt with a crossbow. After killing dozens of deer, hogs, squirrels, woodchucks, and even a bear, Bunjie is now semi-retired, but still gets out every year and even killed two deer 2023--and a woodchuck at 81 yards!
Bunjie and I have written two books: The Death by Bunjie Crossbow Method ( amzn.to/3zJbAI0 ) and The Death by Bunjie Crossbow Story ( amzn.to/2Peq4aC ), both available on Amazon.com with those links.
Check out the Gear Page on our website, deathbybunjie.com. Again, I am not sponsored by anyone! But you can see what gear I like and don't like on that site. And if you buy from Amazon.com using one of those links, Death by Bunjie receives a small referral fee and you DO NOT pay more! How cool is that?
Check out the Death by Bunjie podcast, Talking with Bunjie! It's available on deathbybunjie.com or on the podcast app of your choice.
    Facebook much? deathbybunjie
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. This crossbow was also a much appreciated gift from a Friend of Bunjie, and it changed Death by Bunjie forever by inspiring Genevieve to become a part of our story as a second-generation crossbow hunter, and it also convinced me there is a benefit to a newer, faster crossbow back in 2020 when I began the Quest for a Successor to Bunjie. Enter Bunjie III (or Bunjie '21, Bunjie 3.0, The Slick Black Cadillac of Crossbows), a 2021 Scorpyd Deathstalker 420, the result of trying various models and looking at dozens of them online for characteristics I liked. It is, in fact, a gift from a Friend of Bunjie, which goes to show how important Friends of Bunjie are to this channel and what an impact they can have. Bunjie III is a testament to modern crossbows, producing over .7 slugs of momentum and almost 140 ft-lbs of kinetic energy with stock arrows--at around 400 fps! This crossbow helped expand the Kingdom fo Bunjie by introducing me to compound crossbows and showing me they're nothing to be feared, and also helped me get my first deer on public ground. This crossbow also inspired the "Rule of 400" that I talk about from time to time: a crossbow that can shoot a 400 grain arrow at 400 feet per second is the definition of a modern crossbow--producing over .7 slugs of momentum and over 140 foot pounds of kinetic energy, the envy of the archery world.
Again, I am not sponsored by these companies. I am sponsored by Friends of Bunjie! (I'm not asking for gifts whatsoever--please don't feel like you should send me stuff! But I do appreciate the support I've received over the years! I'm just trying to express my appreciation for that.)
This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...and music, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, Yankee Militia. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
If you've read this far, then there is only one thing left to say:
    All Hail Bunjie!

Rich , Where & when is the speed of Crossbows going to stop . I think crossbow hunters are going to take farther & farther shots & you are going to have more wounded deer . Don’t know if I agree with faster & faster Crossbows . Seems like it is taking the fun out of trying to get that deer in close for the shot . How many deer have you shot with the O.B.? You shot a lot of deer in the years hunting with it ?

    • @Deathbybunjie
      @Deathbybunjie  6 месяцев назад +4

Hopefully it doesn't stop...hopefully crossbow technology continues to progress...as for the fun, speed and distance are two different things. We can still shoot 20 and under. 400 fps does 20 better than 300fps, and I'm betting 500 does it better than 400. Yep I can still shoot deer with the OB...and I will continue to use it, but the 400fps reduces deer ducking the string at 30 and under so much that I can't pass it up. It really is a big deal to me. Someday I think I'll be saying the same thing about 500. We'll see!

Love your input, and how passionate you are, regarding crossbow hunting. But you do seem to be going high-tech on everything. Yep, turning me off a bit. I'm sorry, just being honest.
I've never met so many people or talk to so many people, that know so many people this year, that have taken, shots, past 30 yards, because of all the high tech stuff there loaded with. But missed, and/ or injured the animal and never recovered them. And yes, I'm a Tad guilty of thinking in the same way. With my new crossbow, I actually considered taking one outside of 30 yds. I didn't, and I'm thankful. But I thought about it. I passed on several shots over 30 yards. I practiced over 30, many, many times. I guess I'm just a traditionalist. The brutes I'm hunting will be there, next year. Hopefully. At least a couple of them.
Not against all the high-tech groovy stuff, That's out there. But we seem to be pushing our boundaries more and more. Not sold, that that's a good thing in the long run. Like I said I'm somewhat of a traditionalist, I just love being out there, and the cat and mouse game that comes with it. All the Intel gathering, preparation, camaraderie of being with family and friends or just by yourself, perseverance, solitude, achievement and gratitude when it all comes together.
I can see us getting too high tech! I hope we don't go to far🤷 🤔😉

500+ fps is crazy! It’s truly in a category by itself.

Also have a Tenpoint Titan M1 with a crank to compare them to. The Wicked Ridge M370 with the rope cocker I got a sweet deal on a slightly used one where the guy needed the money for $360.00. The new one with a crank was on sale for a really good price of $499.99 at Bass Pro Shop. I got the Tenpoint Titan M1 for $699.99 when I got it. That too was on special sale. No need to spend over 2k to get a quality crossbow.

    I agree with the 400fps 400gr. arrow concept 100% ! I’m currently running a 450x450 setup
That is my favorite “right now “. Took me some time to tune my arrows because of using fixed bh’s. The 500fps bow with any thing other than a factory 400 gr.arrow has really been a struggle! I should say STILL is a pain in the butt.
    Still working on it though.
P.S-you are definitely hitting the nail on the head by taking a good look at the arrows. Weight, strength, shaft and most importantly for “my” benefit, the nocks !
    Love the videos! Mike👍🏻

Khm. The first (modern) reverse draw crossbow was, I believe, the Russian "Leo Pro" perhaps a decade and a half or so ago. I believe the Ten Point and other payed to use the patent. And, the first rail-less design was probably the Tom Jennings Devastator crossbow, in mid 1980's which was under production untill late 1990's or early 2000s. There was also a trackless PSE model called Firefox, but somehow I think the Jennings one was first. So, these two concepts are not a Ravin or Scorpyd inventions.

You’re Hundo P right , the arrows are often overlooked. The fact that you have a 445 grain arrow flying at 495 ft./s is truly revolutionary in terms of its weight-to-power ratio. Additionally, when you consider the use of a wide fixed broadhead that is heavier than a mechanical one, it becomes even more impressive. It might be worth reaching out to Troy Fowler, who runs a RUclips channel called Ranch Fairy . The channel is dedicated to the study of arrows and broadheads. I'm curious to know what he would think about this setup.

Shoot 5 grains per pound like a compound bow and it will quiet it down. At 300 pounds of draw weight, a 1500-grain hour will shoot pretty quiet. If the crossbow is shooting a 400-grain arrow with 300 pounds draw weight, that is 1.33 grains per pound. That is why these crossbows are pretty loud. It's almost a dry fire when shot. I am amazed that they hold together as well as they do.

I think one of the things I'd like to see moving forward is broadheads that match up to the speeds we are seeing with these. I have a 470 from TenPoint and there is too much power lost (as you talked about in a previous video). I've shot two so far this year, a turkey and a deer. The turkey didn't make it 20 yards, wing bones were broken and it was a pass-thru, but it also sank the entire arrow into the ground, the only thing that I found was the nock sticking out of the grass 95% of that arrow as in the ground. Arrow was 100% fine as was the broadhead, but.. that's a lot of energy that was left over and used to put that arrow into the ground.
With the deer shot, it was a bit better, pass-thru, deer went 125 yards or so, but arrow as ~6-8" in the ground. Still a lot of lost energy. So, as I said to start I'd love to see Sevr come out with a bigger Robusto, 3"? 175-200g? Sounds good to me. I'd love to try that out.
I love the idea as you said, the arrow ends up 5 or so feet beyond the target laying on top of the ground... all energy dumped into that animal.

it would be fun to see the twisting movement of the limbs in slowmotion with these new x-bow limbs wich i think is going to be a problem/issue if not taken into account, i cant find much info about the, one other thing to think about is what happens if a string breaks will limbs survive this without micro-cracks of breakeage. i dont mind faster arrows but seems this the price is getting way to high as i said previously if one wants a faster arrow get the 1" without fletching so one can shoot at 100y or more and use a string ilencer on it, so you can hunt wabbits seems that one can get 4 or more rifles for these prices as well

Not sure if I'm speaking out of turn here, but all these modern crossbows seem too over complicated.
I have a basic 175 lb crossbow, and it puts out around 375 ft/sec with the alloy arrows I have.
I have seen over powered crossbows passing through targets here on RUclips.
I have bows as well , recurve and compound, and I find the old kit is more reliable, cheaper and less faff than newer stuff.
I have shot 7.62 and 5.56 whilst serving, nothing beats a bolt or arrow hitting hard imho.
This new stuff is a waste of ££££ greetings from England 🇬🇧

Hey Rich I believe all Ravin models after 2018 did not have the cantilever scope rail. It’s a one piece secured in front and back. It must be removed before any bow press work can be done 😐. (R26 and R29 series x-bows) not really a big deal, just one more step in the process 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🇺🇸

I agree with you about spending 3k on a crossbow. Most of my crossbows (12 of them) were in the $450 - $850 range. I do also own a Mission Sub-1 camo and a Ravin R10 camo as well. I thought I needed my head examined when I pulled the trigger on those buys. Even so you are talking $1,200 to $1,700ish NOT three grand! That is insane and obnoxious for a crossbow. It wasn't that long ago you could buy a brand new 125cc 2-stroke motocross dirtbike for that much or just a little more. I paid $3,200 for a 1988 Ford Ranger XLT with 82,000 miles on it in 1993 for reference as well.

“I don’t want crossbows doing over 400 fps because the squishy diaper vertical bow hunters will get us kicked out of their hunting season!”
First of all, the season now belongs to us! Money does make the world go around. The idea of kicking out crossbow hunters spells the death of hunting. Truth!
It doesn’t matter what the squishy diaper crew thinks! They have lost the argument long ago.
Shooting deer at ranges that are “too far” is a problem that hunters have had since before most of us have been around. Don’t get swept up by the naysayers BS! Crossbows hav deer not led to the erosion of hunting.
We all know that vertical bow hunters sometimes wound and loose deer at a higher rate than firearms hunters. The crossbow hunters are often more efficient at taking deer, provided they get a deer in front of them. Crossbows and vertical bows do not take as many deer as firearms! Never have and never will!
The disgruntled vertical bow hunters have nothing more to say!
Don’t believe the hype! What we should be doing is supporting and encouraging more hunters to take part in the sport, not alienating them because we think we’re better. Oops, that’s what some vertical bow hunters do.
There is a segment of vertical bow hunters that are just bad! Sorry, but they prove this point every day!
Certainly I’m not referring to all, but look around at many stupid pod cast and chat sites.

He cocked his bow, went to remove the rope and it went off. He had his fingers on the plastic rope pullers and not in front of the string. His finger must have been pulled and slipped off and in front of the string. It was a clean cut at the first joint. He is a first year crossbower and not sure if he will ever go again. Maybe a RUclips or podcast on safety? Also, baiting with corn, I have learned not to do a pile or across in front of you. Instead, corn in a line pointed at you. The deer will eat so you have a broadside shot. Had a 140 class buck come in and stand facing me at 10 yards for 5 plus minutes. I could hear him eat the corn. Then, turned and went away. I tried to stop him, didn't help. Learned from that and now have corn on ground pointed at me.
