I love this one Keith, the folk melody is absolutely delightful and works great with the darker, shamanic throat singing. Very cool montage as well, I think the song fits so well with the "Young Warrior Journey" type of theme...^^ Wonderful work!

@Dervhengrym Thank you very much. This track was inspired by Russian bands, Ochelie Soroki and Nytt Land, really great pagan folk musicians. The Tagelharpa is central to both their sound, it's an instrument I really love, although it's a tough instrument to learn, at least that's how I found at the start. How is life treating you ? Hopefully working on some more classics. I'm still loving Álfadróttinn, an absolute classic tune, I listen to it often. I'm looking forward to the next track. So, I hope you are keeping busy my friend, have a great weekend. :)

@@KeithOSullivanmusic Oh my, I didn't realise it's a tagelharpa! A very beautiful sound indeed, in your other tracks as well (New World, Faith, Arminius, ...). Is it a two string model? I recently went ahead and built two of them, based on the Finnish Jouhikko model from ancientmusic.co.uk and following some advice given by Eldrim in a video here on RUclips. (some photos on twitter if you'd like to have a look: twitter.com/boris9141) although the first one isn't too bad the second has a better resonance, and I'm currently figuring out some melodies and drones for my next songs. The one I'm working on atm should be done in a few weeks, or little more. It'll be closer to Úlfhéðnar in style, it's about Ymir and the Ice Giants ^^. I agree, it's quite tough to play, not to mention to tune, especially with horse hair. What is yours made of? :)
I'm very pleased that you still listen to Álfadróttinn, it's encouraging! by the way I've made some serious adjustments and remastered it, the sound is clearer and much more enjoyable, and I'd be happy to send it to you if you want: dervhengrym@hotmail.com.
Take care my friend, and have fun making music!

The one I bought was made Camilla M. Ferrari, from the band A TERGO LUPI. A very good Italian Pagan Band. It's a three string, originally with Horse Hair Strings,I'm experimenting with Nylon Viola strings at the minute. It's made from Resonance Fir, lovely sound. I will be putting the Horse Hair back on soon. I read a while back that for those struggling with the instrument to put on violin, or viola strings.

I'm playing it now over a year, and to be honest with you, it's only now that I am getting a handle on it. This is a good channel to check out about the Jouhikko.

We seem to be travelling the same path, I am starting tomorrow on a Bass Tagelharpa, Hard Maple body, Spruce front and back soundboards. The body is 900 mm, scale length will be 600 mm, a 1/2 Cello scale. It will have 3 strings, which I'll get experimental with. I have Morin Khurr Nylon Strings that match the scale length, so I'll give them a try. Did you try Gut Strings ? I'm thinking of giving them a try, they gave a nice sound, and it's an old original ancient string. I know that it will kill the look in general, I'm putting bass guitar tuning pegs, for a more dependable tuning.
There is a great Facebook page, I'm not on Facebook, but can access the page, a lot of good information. facebook.com/groups/458771167542016/
Also check out Ochelie Soroki RUclips page for more tips on the Tagelharpa / Jouhikko. Pavel Boev is the business.

It was watching Eldrim that I got the bug to build one. I'm also doing a Medieval Style Folk Fiddle, Horse Hair, EAD. The twitter link would't open, here's my email if you want to send anything kosulmusic@gmail.com
If you want to hear Viola strings on a Tagelharpa check out Nytt Land, he prefers them over horse hair, and I read that sometimes when Wardruna play that Einar somtimes uses violin strings. The purists may not agree, but in my experience it is good to experiment with different strings. As a beginner to playing a stringed instrument, hose hair and tuning can be a maze at the start. It was the original sound of Horse Hair that drew me to the instrument. I better leave it for now, talk to you later.

@@KeithOSullivanmusic Ah yes A Tergo Lupi, I remember discovering their channel not too long ago, these are fine looking instruments, maybe expensive but obviously worth the investment when hearing the clarity and precision of the sound. If you're interested, we can also find a very nice variety of these as well as different models on etsy, I'm thinking of this vendor in particular: www.etsy.com/shop/CrossroadMusic
Thank you for all the links, I had a hard time finding information on the subject, all I could find was Eldrim's video, Michael J. King's videos and I also relied on some violin channels and websites. Ochelie Soroki seems to be a good teacher, thankfully there's auto-english caption, I'm not a fan of Facebook tbh but it's great to have helpful folks directly interact with you. JouhikkoJamit is a very interesting channel as well.
That is very cool, the sound of a bass tagelharpa is both powerful and hypnotizing, great material for future music :) Are you able to find various essences of wood easily where you live? Mine are made of spruce: soundboard, soundbox, bass-bar and soundpost; oak tailpiece and bridge; and ash pegs. No I've only tried horse hair (both black and white), same as you, when I first heard the organic sound of horse hair it really made the difference over nylon for me, even though it tends to behave irregularly. Not that I dislike nylon though, and as you say trying out different types of strings for your instrument is interesting, I'm also very curious about gut strings and I think that's the next thing I'll go for. I'm not surprised Einar Selvik would sometimes use violin strings, especially for long performances, even though it's way too early for me to make an accurate statement on the matter I can hardly imagine a tagelharpa player, even as skilled as Einar, play on horse hair strings for 1 or 2 hours straight without it misbehaving because of moisture, temperature and whatnot ^^
Oh sorry maybe because of the parenthesis at the end twitter.com/boris9141

A lot of the sounds are from Dark Era by Eduardo Tarilonte, it's one of the best Virtual Instruments ever, especially for the Euro Folk - Pagan sound. I could not recommend it more. I love Tarilonte's Virtual Instruments, for the sounds I like he has no equal. I started learning how to play the Tagelharpa last year, and there are a few good ones in Dark Era. Talk to you soon my friend. :)

You have two of my favourite Virtual Instruments. Eduardo gives great quality at a fairly reasonable price. If you like the sound of my last few tracks you'd definitely like Dark Era.
