Tony is a genius. He produced the coolest sounding riffs without the complexity. Most guitar player's develop complex technical abilities to shred or play licks all over the fretboard to achieve the " aura " of amazing but Tony just down tuned and played simple but the heaviest, darkest and coolest riffs. Legend!
I think I read something years ago about Tony having a hand injury early in life causing his fingers to not bend correctly on fret hand. And that is why he had such a distinct sound. Will look and see if I can find and scan articles. Think it was Guitar mag late 80s
@@scottblair8625 the accident on his job in a factory had his finger tips on his playing hand cut , so in order to be make playing easier , especially bending , he started down tuning and using lighter guage strings and the magic of heavy dark riffs began !
I can't give Iommi enough praise. Man is a legend and a main inspiration for getting into guitar. His riffs are killer. Lately I've been playing Fairies Wear Boots, another classic.
There are lots of great Sabbath songs, but people really only talk about Iron Man and Paranoid. I remember when I heard Into the Void for the first time, the way the bass kicked in really floored me and made me a Sabbath fan. Same with Judas Priest's 70's music. Nobody talks about that era, only British Steel and on. 🤷♂️
The whole paranoid album was definitely one of my main inspirations for playing and Fairies wear boots is just so damn fun to play! The intro, the rhythm, the changes is just fantastic!
Tony Iommi. Riff God. That’s all you need to say. Symptom of the Universe was the first metal riff that I learned to play. On a crappy $30 acoustic no less. The neck soon broke off of the body. I then bought my first electric guitar (the Ibanez EX120 that you see as my user photo). Metal would be very different if Sabbath hadn’t existed. They influenced everyone.
Tony Iommi, the Riffmaster! Fantastic choice for an awesome lesson, thanks Robert! The old Sabbath records had so much swing, I think it's really what a lot of the other heavy bands that came after simply couldn't emulate.
Iommi is the kind of player as you grow, you appreciate! I never dug him much when I started. Now, much like Robert, I simply cannot get enough of his playing or writing. Incredible playing and tone!! He is also the sole reason I must have an SG.
I was a little young to get Tony the first time around, but man he is one of my favorites. The riffs and extended jams are perfect but also accessible. He’s the perfect blend of metal and blues players like Cream era Clapton.
Bluesy yet heavy and dark. Tony had those riffs in spades, with an ace up his sleeve for sure. Great break down video on one of my favorites. Thank you.
He is the riff king and I never heard anything like Black Sabbath's first album when it was released. All that great playing even with him missing the tips of his middle and ring fingers. thanks for teaching the riff!!
You might think about doing a master track high-pass filter at 80Hz or so, for the few of us left who use full-range speakers with bass. I can always hear your foot stomp and stuff like that in the subwoofer. Just pointing it out, don't hate.
And he even made those fake fingertips himself. Made them out of bottle caps that he melted down and wrapped the third finger with leather for grip when bending strings.
Tony Iommi is the master of riffs! He has so many underrated stuff. The albums he did with Glenn Hughes "Fused" and "1996 DEP Sessions" are also really underrated and amazing. Every Iommi and Hughes fan should give it a listen if they haven't already. I love these series Robert. It would be cool to see something related to Dave Navarro or Mick Mars. I think that many people don't appreciate enough what they have done.
Love me some Tony Iommi Black Sabbath riffs. My faves, in no particular order, are Paranoid, War Pigs, Iron Man, and that sick opening riff to Electric Funeral.
Love the sound of that SG! Tony, truly a master of his art. He certainly set the standard for the metal to follow. Fab lesson. Like loads of his stuff, to many good riffs to call one!
rat salad is a cool riff. but, for me one of his most underrated riffs is a national acrobat. heavy af, sounds tricky, but isn't (once you sort out the phrasing).
When Nirvana was out and everybody was wanting to be a grunge person I dug through my dad's records I found sabbath and was obsessed with iommi.learned and played thu the first album ❤
Rat Salad! Paranoid was the very first LP I ever owned... I think I was like 9, so... that would've been 1975 when I got that. Still one of my favorite albums ever... If only my parents knew when they let me get that album! Thanks Robert, that was a very cool video. And yes, I entered your giveaway.
Tony Iommi has always been one my heros, my first album was Paranoid. I am trying to learn guitar again after cutting the ends off two of my finger tips. So I know how difficult it was for him as well. I should be the one to win this smoking SG, Thanks.
I don't think Iommi get's enough respect for being an amazing soloist. I practically know his riffs by heart but I'm more intrigued with the way he composes his solos with those jazz phrases. Rat Salad and Planet Caravan are some of my favorite solo's by Tony, along with Black Sabbath, NIB, the outro to Behind the Wall of Sleep on their live performances, War Pigs, the outro to Under the Sun and Wheels of Confusion, Warning... the list goes on. I'm always trying to recreate his solos, Black Sabbath is all I really play on my guitar. Roxy SG.
Sabbath was my favorite band when I was younger. I haven't listened to them much lately except the Heavan and Hell album. Thanks for the refresher on this song. I broke out my guitar and gave it a whirl. Tons of fun! Btw His book is a really quick read.
Tony was the first guitarist I copied when I was a young teen and putting together a band. I bought my first guitar and amp. The amp was a fifty watt Yamaha and I picked up a, headed for the dumpster , no name SG. I swear my mother still knows Paranoid note for note.
Woaaaa I want to play this Tony Iommi's riff on my own SG 🙌🌠🎆🌈🌻. Good luck guys. If I win the guitar 🎸🎶🎶🎶🤘 I will be too happy like a child on christmas.
Never really listened to too much of the less-known stuff for Sabbath; but this riff is pretty slammin’ for a guitarist to know! If I win the SG, it’ll be the first thing I learn, I promise!! 🤞
'All hail The Riff Maister !! We are Not Worthy ' I remember being a teen in the mid -seventies and figuring some of these riffs by myself and feeling so proud !! ;p) !!

Best Comment Award...I'll take a good heavy riff all day long over 1,000 notes per minute...ie...Tony and Billy Gibbons...

The “Jack the Stripper” intro to “Fairies” is absolutely killer!
@@nckhed Geezer Butler is freaking awesome man.

i hate how people skip on his 80"s riffs and i don't mean the dio years,he made some of the most killer riffs with tony martin and ian gillan aswell
One of the best sabbath tunes! The whole band is rocking and it just has a badass vibe. Tony's solo and Bill Ward's drumming kills

Into the Void has my favorite riffs in it 🙌🏽🤘🏽
That one is a headbanger and is groovy as hell.
@@nckhed oh hell yeah, that’s the beauty of it getting different worlds all mixed up in one song 💪🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Into the void. My favorite riff of all time.
That riff is what I use to test fuzz pedals lol
The heaviest riff ever!
Tony is my favorite guitarist! All his riffs are amazing! Dark and biting!
my favourite Iommi riff is the bridge in When Death Calls. Headless Cross in general is such an underrated album.
The Tony Martin albums are very underrated. Annos Mundi is an absolute banger
And that Laurence Cottle intro … I got in love with WDC as soon as the bass starts.
That is an AWESOME song 👍

His solos are just phenomenal especially early sabbath, NIB is probably one of my all time favorites
I was a little young to get Tony the first time around, but man he is one of my favorites. The riffs and extended jams are perfect but also accessible. He’s the perfect blend of metal and blues players like Cream era Clapton.
Tony is a living Legend
He inspired me to play Guitar 🤘🤘🤘
Tony Iommi is a legend! I can listen to his tone for hours is given the chance. Awesome video!
That is the best sounding SG I've ever heard! Those Pearly Gates are outstanding!
Bluesy yet heavy and dark. Tony had those riffs in spades, with an ace up his sleeve for sure. Great break down video on one of my favorites. Thank you.
One of my guitar heroes who is such an inspiration. Much love and respect to Tony 🙏
That whole first album is so underrated.
Lusting after that SG!
He is the riff king and I never heard anything like Black Sabbath's first album when it was released. All that great playing even with him missing the tips of his middle and ring fingers. thanks for teaching the riff!!
Toni is a cool laid back cat and his riffs are immortal.
Tony Iommi, one of my absolute heroes! Thank you, Robert. Lovely tone and playing.
One of my favorite Sabbath tunes

Seeing as you have music studio in your profile name, I’m sure you can hear a fart from the other room with your setup lol 😂
Out of the two parts I'd take that one too! Love the embellishments/attitude! Need an sg in my life. Rock on brother
Tony Iommi has been kickin azz for my whole life. Long live Tony 🤘🏼🤘🏼
The riffmaster is an absolute genius. Been into Sabbath since the early 80's. My all time favourite.
Many times I've picked up the guitar and just played this song all the way through.. it's just so right and feels so good to play
Tony did all that with prosthetic fingertips awesome for sure.
And he even made those fake fingertips himself. Made them out of bottle caps that he melted down and wrapped the third finger with leather for grip when bending strings.
The drums on this track are also legendary, my favorite drum solo ever
Love it Robert! All good, but Symptom Of The Universe is still my personal favorite! Would love a breakdown of that!
Fantastic…..From the King of the Riffs…….Vol1 of 50!!Good job my man👍🏴

Totally agree
yup
I love that song and all the riffs in it.
Awesome video Robert! Love these riff vids! Thanks brother! Merry Christmas!
Rat Salad has always been one of my fav Sabbath tunes. And, btw, YOUR HAIR IS PERFECT!
Merry Christmas to you and your family and a happy and blessed new year. Thank you to you and the wife for all your work on these videos!
Playing sabbath and wearing the Van Halen shirt love it 2 of my favorite guitarists
agree!! a great riff from Paranoid album. Gets underated, as you have Paranoid, war pigs and fairies famous riffs.
When Nirvana was out and everybody was wanting to be a grunge person I dug through my dad's records I found sabbath and was obsessed with iommi.learned and played thu the first album ❤
Rat Salad is awesome, but St. Vitus Dance in my opinion is the most underrated Iommi riff from the OG Black Sabbath line up.
Great lesson for a great riff! Great for putting the blue pentatonic note into practice.
One of the Godfathers of metal much respect ,great one Robert keep 'em coming !

The king of zero complication. His riffs are not much to look at but they roar.

That's a great sounding SG with those Pearly Gates.
Can you do a video on some riffs from Black Sabbath "Sabotage?" Totally underrated album.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
I think "Fairies wear boots" and "War pigs" both deserves to be learn and played once a day.
Awesome riff! Thanks for teaching it!
Love that SG! so versatile with all the mods
Awesome guitar, I would love to play this for my son , he loves the SG looks. Thanks for the riff lesson, sweet.
Good Tony tone on that SG
The riff master rules , also Wicked World is a killer song to play!🤘
Love those locking tuners. Tony, what more can you say, a guitar GOD!!!
Iommi has the most recognisable and gnarliest heavy riffs ever, best metal guitarist ever 🤟🤟🤟🤟
Hole in the sky is the one that hooked me. Tony’s the riff master.
Great lick. Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks for the great lesson man, love that one more than Zeppelins Moby Dick and much more challenging to play - Iommi was the Riff Master!

I love this guitar!
I’ve been listening to ‘Behind The Wall Of Sleep’ & ‘Hand Of Doom’ a lot lately.
Sabbatoge is one of my favorite records. Nobody ever talks about it.
Great tone!
Fairies wear boots is awesome too.👍🎸
Love the Iommi material! Much respect for covering Rat Salad-underrated gem.
Maybe cover Embryo? 👀
Love your videos dude
Thanks for the lesson.
