    I think you are on the right track in suspecting the sio chip. The real time clock is running and you have the voltage coming in. The thermal camera is confirming the diagnosis that there is no activity in the sio. Thanks for the fun video! Always learning from your videos.

    As a retro Hw enthusiast I think this board must be saved! ABIT is a legend and they are becoming rare. I have almost none. Just watch the super nice cooler on the chipset!!

      I will certainly do my best. I have a similar motherboard myself (working) I bought at the local flea market in May this year for €15 (for the complete PC) You can see it on this video from 34:45
      ruclips.net/video/mLu5Dtn2sss/видео.html
      I'm not sure if it is as rare as the one in the video but I would love to hear your opinion on that

    Love these little trips down memory lane, the Abit boards were cutting edge and set a high bar when they were around, if memory serves the brand was the 1st to have jumperless configuration for I/O, bus speed and cpu, a possible reason why the post card may not work in the bottom slot is as there are 5x PCI slots the bottom one is most likely slaved to slot4, if it is the case then that means if there is nothing in slot4 then slot5 wont work, the motherboard manual will confirm this, getting hold of it may also shine a bit of light on some deviations from other brands, its been a long time since I have touched one of these but one thing I do remember is these board can have a few jumpers not only for the clear CMOS but also for power to the USB's and the PS2, to wake the machine up from a keyboard plugged into these ports, if these are set different on each board they may skew your readings, looking forward to you solving this one, keep up the good work!

    Hi awesome and interesting video! :) I have an ABIT - AA8XE board from a customer who says the board is stone dead. I have done some initial testing but still have to do more on it. I started learning board level repair recently for my job and also developed an interest in it, and think that its very interesting to learn how they work, how to test them, find problems and solutions to them. Thanks for your videos they are always a great learning experience! :D

    I do think you're on to something with the SIO chip as you said, it runs a number of the interfaces on that board so a voltage coming in over the parallel port, serial port, or perhaps even trying to hotplug the P/S2 keyboard or mouse could have damaged something. I know an old Abit board of mine had power-on via keyboard so it would actually listen to a custom keyboard sequence and that would power on the PC. Certainly the thermal cam has proven quite useful in checking against the known good board. I'm curious to see if the replacement SIO chip fixes the board. Thanks so much for sharing with us!

  • @Alvin853
    @Alvin853 2 года назад +1

    Does the chip need any signal to turn on, or does it turn on as soon as it has power? Section 1.6 of the pin configuration you showed at 13:47 has a PSIN on pin 68, that had a description of "panel switch input", not sure if that has anything to do with the chip turning on. I wouldn't expect chips like that to just stop working, I feel like we're missing something else, but no idea what exactly.
    Also maybe check the voltages on the reset pins on the front panel header, possibly reset-voltage isn't being pulled up, and the system thinks the reset button is being held down, seen that happen on modern boards.

    • @mesterak
      @mesterak 2 года назад

      The fact that the BIOS post code immediately goes to F instead of 01 just when the PSU is powered on is indicative that pre checks failed. I don’t think that ensuring power on signal reaches the Super IO will matter because the board is already in a faulted state.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  2 года назад

      I can confirm that reset on the front panel pin header is being pulled up to 3.3V on both boards

    Great video as always.
    so you used the thermal camera to find a missing heat source , creative :),
    but this does require a duplicate board if you don't know exactly how the board works .
    still a useful tip and will be saved in my tool box, now if i could only afford a thermal camera 😂😂😂😂

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  2 года назад

      Yes it is good to have a duplicate board - but next time I see a motherboard that will not start and the SIO is black then it will give me a good hint as to what the problem is.

      it belongs to a subscriber who asked me to fix it, and I always make videos of anything a subscriber sends, even if i can't fix it
      Whether you find it strange or not, these old motherboards are becoming valuable and collectable in their own right. Now is the best time to get hold of them. But mostly though, I think this video is a good example for logical fault finding it's a shame it will probably not get a lot of views as there is something to learn here about this approach to repair, I am sure 🙂

    Did you find the bios terminal jumper and short it for 10 sec ? I remember Abit having RAM voltage problems I believe they use 2.5V but try to increase the voltage to 2.8V and see if it boots. Also try a few memory cards who have different/looser timings.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  2 года назад +1

      How can that work - the motherboard will not even power up, I only have 5V standby ,and there is clearly a problem at this stage, so there is no power to the BIOS or the RAM yet.

  • @ser_olmy
    @ser_olmy 2 года назад

    Any particular reason why you didn't try to force the PSU on by pulling PS_ON low directly on the ATX connector?
    I've seen cases where forcing the power on would result in the system booting normally but then wouldn't power off again, which is a fairly strong indicator that the SIO is bad while the other m/b components are probably OK.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  2 года назад

      No reason other than I did not particularly consider it because in this instance there is clearly a problem (code F) before the PS_ON button is pressed. forcing the PSU to power on, in my opinion, could not 'fix' a problem what has already occurred but if you would like me to try it I can give it a go.

    Is the sio driving the on-board display?

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  2 года назад +1

      @Spixy Cat YES This is what I wondered too. I don't know as I do not have a schematic - but the SIO does have the LPC (low pin count) diagnostics interface and the fact it displays F is like four data lines all high (or floating high). It certainly is not displaying BIOS post codes at this point in the power on sequence. I did think if I could work out what it is doing, it may make a design for a useful diagnostic tool when a motherboard will not even power up. 😉

      Hi,
      have the same issue with the blinking / flashing light with my camera setup and it's because of the 60/50hz mains frequency.
      you can do 2 things to mitigate this 1 change the lamp to a constant current source lamp with alot of filtering (usually photography battery powered led panels ) or change the shutter speed on the camera to multiples of the mains frequency i use 50/100
      and some cameras can filter it out automatically like my new microscope (i set it to 50hz ) and it works
      hope this helps 😁
