"Stop Making Sense" is the greatest live DVD ever made. If you like this song you will be blown away by the whole show it just keeps getting better and better with each son...mind blower !!!!
I only found out recently the concerts director was Jonathan Demme who went on to direct Silence of the lambs and Philadelphia. I have the original 84 VHS of this show
I'm a 65 year old black guy from Philly and I've seen them live numerous times starting from the 70's,my brother turned me on to them and I've been down with them ever since. Their live performances and energy is intoxicating.. That's Bernie Worrell from funkadelic on keyboard
Around '84 I was in a small cinema, in the middle of England - watching "Stop Making Sense". By the time this song was on, the WHOLE audience was out of their seats, in the aisles dancing. This is infectious and great fun - must play the whole movie some time! :)
The same thing happened in Montreal's 2000 seat Seville Festival Cinema, when the movie was new. The huge screen had a stage in front of it, the Seville having once been a live Vaudeville theatre. Kids got up and danced onstage, dwarfed by the projected image. Management tried a few times to clear them away, but the rest of us began to clap to the music's beat, and the managers finally understood that we were loving it. Even the aisle dancers were left to enjoy themselves. At that point, the movie became more of a live event, with participation, applause after every song, and cheering at the dancers.
Such a great live show. Starts off with just David Byrne on his own singing Psycho Killer - next song joined by Tina Weymouth while rest of set was built round them - extraordinary
Took the day of school to go see that movie was at boarding school jumped on the train missed my stop and carried on into Auckland great movie. Comes out on stage a puts a radio in the centre of the stage and the rest is history....great memories and Im 59yrs old now David Byrne massive vocals and enterteainer
In the beginning of “Stop Making Sense” Concert DVD he sings “Psycho Killer” and he LOOKS like a psycho killer… then, later in the concert he puts on the Big Suit which is hilarious. This is the best concert DVD I have ever seen and I have seen a hundred. This is all choreographed….he is a singer/performance artist of the highest caliber.
So happy to see you enjoy this. This concert was one of the best things that has ever happened and David Byrne is one of a kind. If you can enjoy the energy here, without analysing or criticising, just soak it up and go with it, you are on the right road. ❤
The music is so fun and bouncy, don't forget what they are singing about. living during a war, what you have , your needs , what you care about . its actually pretty heavy.
My take on the choreography is that the whole song is about having to keep moving to survive. He takes off after the 'siren' and the guitarist is shooting at him.
I grew up in a house hold with no music. Don't get me wrong it was great. Just no music. Ever. I turned 14 and a new family moved in down the street with a stereo. They were city folk and weird as all hell. Changed my life. Thanks Bill& Mimi for moving out to the country with us hicks.
So glad you guys got into this, been a fan since the 70’s, this whole concert is just a good time, you should do Slippery People from Stop Making Sense, or even the whole concert, I’m sure you’ll love it!
When they did this show they started it with an empty stage and just David Byrne with an acoustic guitar doing "Psycho Killer" then rolled out the different instruments, one by one, building up the band and the stage as they went
I have seen hundreds of international concerts live, and when I am asked which was the best, Talking Heads is the first one I mention. Mesmerising from start to finish.
This entire concert is amazing it starts with Byrne alone with an acoustic and with each song a different section of the band is added. RIP Bernie Worell.
You guys are teasing yourselves......as a 68 year old, life long rock fan I can tell you the Stop Making Sense concert by David Byrne and Talking Heads is one of the best I have ever watched. It is a legendary classic and should be watched from beginning to end. He is one of the last living musical geniuses of my time. Treat yourselves to the whole show.
Someone at a party tried to offer me some speed, and I said, "No way, man, all I gotta do is watch the Stop Making Sense version of 'Life During Wartime,' and that'll get my blood flowin'." The guy said, "Whatever, man," and he walked away, shaking his head, disappearing into his own drug-fueled oblivion...
I was in a bar in the mid 70's, the owners daughter came in with a stack of tickets for a new band named Talking heads. She was trying to give them away, no takers. What fools we were, at least me. Jim
This is classic Talking Heads: Incredibly catchy hooks, insane combination of funk/new wave/punk -- and ironic/intentionally juxtaposed presentation. Listen to the lyrics. They are ACTUALLY about life during wartime. Here's some to consider (and I'll bet you there are those in Ukraine who totally relate to these lyrics): "Heard of a van that's loaded with weapons Packed up and ready to go Heard of some gravesites, out by the highway A place where nobody knows The sound of gunfire, off in the distance I'm getting used to it now Lived in a brownstone, lived in a ghetto I've lived all over this town" Or how about this stuff: "Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock We blended in with the crowd We got computers, we're tapping phone lines I know that that ain't allowed We dress like students, we dress like housewives Or in a suit and a tie I changed my hairstyle, so many times now I don't know what I look like 'You make me shiver, I feel so tender We make a pretty good team Don't get exhausted, I'll do some driving You ought to get you some sleep Burned all my notebooks, what good are notebooks? They won't help me survive My chest is aching, burns like a furnace The burning keeps me alive
Do it!!! Let go on stage. Reveal you spirit fully. It's what the great ones do. I saw this movie in 1983 in a theatre as a 25 year old college student. It was in my head for weeks afterwards. Thank you guys for your, always, great reactions. Much love, Neil
I saw the Talking Heads on this tour in 1983 at their show at Pine Knob, outside Detroit. What an evening that was! No other band grabbed my attention quite like these fine musicians did. I had every one of their albums, I loved them!
heavy topic with lots of duality with the frantic dance of living in the middle of war...friggin brilliant art. Just saw Elizabeth's review and saw yours...had to click it, you guys are fun. I saw them live years ago...many. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
I echo the sentiments about "Stop Making Sense" the movie...possibly the greatest concert movie of all time! This album came out while I was in college - just imagine being at a house party so crowded that the floors are creaking & this song comes on...talk about a bomb going off LOL!!! This was the music that could take any party or sporting event (our marching band played this!!!) to the moon lol! And nothing was better than seeing Travis realize that 80s David Byrne is his spirit animal (ps - you guys have brought me a lotta joy this morning with your videos - new subscriber here!)
Final comment. Fun facts: The drummer Chris Frantz and bass player Tina Weymouth are a married couple. The band consists of four core members. Byrne, Frantz, Weymouth and Jerry Harrison (white guy on keyboards). All original members. Additional keyboardist (late) Bernie Worrell was also one of the core members of George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic. He was one of the main creators of their distinct sound. Backup singer Lynn Mabry is also part of Parliament/Funkadelic and is one of the original Brides of Funkenstein. Take all members of the band that you saw on stage minus David Byrne and add two sisters of bassist Tina Weymouth and you have the Tom Tom Club. They had a hit song "Genius Of Love" back in 1982 and in this particular concert show Byrne takes a break and the rest of the band performs Genius Of Love. The two backup singers Edna Holt and Lynn Mabry perform the parts of Weymouth's sisters who were not present. Had enough info?
Jerry Harrison wasn't strictly speaking an original member. When he joined the band were signed to Sire records and had at least recorded their first single. He had joined by the time the first album started recording.
He's actually kind of playing 3D chess. He knows what he's doing. A. The lyrics do not matter. B. The lyrics are actually describing a pretty horrific situation. But at least half of the people listening to the performance will have no idea.
They’ve been super active on social media recently. I am hoping and praying for a reunion tour. I was lucky to see this tour - one of the greatest concerts ever.
You will have the chance to see the entire show , remastered and in theaters in the next few months!!! Even better in it’s entirety on the big screen!!✌️
my god, this is 40 years ago this year...I was 17 when this came out - god I miss that era, the year I learned how to drive, the year I met the love of my life, the year I first started working full time, the year I started going to night clubs, getting drunk, the year I became independent from my parents, and living life to the full.
The concert was filmed as a feature film and released at cinemas.. Saw it a few times and it blew my mind. The whole concert is great, sound and production are amazing
Bringing back our time in the 70's. Thanks so much. It's been too long since I've heard 'Talking Heads'. It's time now to dig out some old albums & spin them on the old turntable.
This is way into the set as well. You can tell because the set starts just with the singer (David) and an acoustic guitar. They then add more musicians for each song
Oh just do the whole concert film already!! I know you will enjoy it immensely! Like many have stated, it's one of the best concert films I've ever seen!! I'd be right there with y'all watching too!!
I saw them on this tour in Toronto in 1982. Tina Weymouth (bass) was very pregnant but didn’t miss a single dance step all night. Incredible performance by one of the most underrated live bands Ive ever seen❤
I had the pleasure of seeing David Byrne, the lead singer live at the Sydney Opera House a few years back. Although silver haired now, he has still got it. Same energy.
The podcast Strong Songs did an incredible episode about this whole live concert, including backgrounds on the artists who joined them for these shows, and how they changed up the tracks from their studio version to live...it's REALLY good and well worth the listen!
Their keyboards for this era was a guy by the name of Bernie Worrell...prior to joining the Heads (and maybe simultaneously) he was in Parliament/Funkadelic. If you wondering why this bookish folk punk band manages to get funky it's Bernie.
Love it! Very innovative band! Tina, an exceptional bassist! I believe there was post production to ensure that it appeared to be sung smoothly during the running sequences etc and not have david appear to be out of breath.
Yeah. This was one of my favorite concert experiences. We were on our feet dancing for a majority of the concert. And to find out they filmed it too, was super cool.

The only DVD concert video I own
Absolutely! ..Every song is amazing!.. If you think this was fun, wait'll you see him in the big suit!
agreed
I only found out recently the concerts director was Jonathan Demme who went on to direct Silence of the lambs and Philadelphia. I have the original 84 VHS of this show
A24 has announced they’ll be releasing a remastered version of Stop Making Sense later this year. Can’t wait!

Talking Heads had such great, such tightly-wound, such paranoid songs. This was one of their best.
The entire Stop making sense movie is incredible!
So happy to see you enjoy this. This concert was one of the best things that has ever happened and David Byrne is one of a kind. If you can enjoy the energy here, without analysing or criticising, just soak it up and go with it, you are on the right road. ❤

@@jamesdean2185Same!
I watched this whole concert and couldn't wipe the smile off my face. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Fantastic entertainers and musicians.
Keyboardist Bernie Worrel from the great 80s funk bands Parliament and Funkadelic. Adds the additional funk to Talking Heads live performances
Dave walks that fine line between genius and insanity,so far he’s stayed on the genius side
He talks about having Aspergers syndrome on some interviews.
you said the magic words - he was so ahead of his time
One of those wonderful things that we will never see live again. Luckily we have these videos, even if some people should be eternal!
This whole show is outstanding.
I love the talking heads ❤❤❤
That was the best reaction to this performance I have ever seen!! Your joy made my day!
This entire concert is amazing it starts with Byrne alone with an acoustic and with each song a different section of the band is added. RIP Bernie Worell.
"This must be the place"
You gonna love that song Guy!☝️😁🕺🏻
Also, Give it up for the two funnest looking backup dancers ever.
I'm sending a❣️ to you both because of your passion 👍💪
You guys are teasing yourselves......as a 68 year old, life long rock fan I can tell you the Stop Making Sense concert by David Byrne and Talking Heads is one of the best I have ever watched. It is a legendary classic and should be watched from beginning to end. He is one of the last living musical geniuses of my time. Treat yourselves to the whole show.
Hyper energetic performance! Awesome
"Anybody have any questions?!" 😂
My biggest concert regret is never seeing Talking Heads live, there is no other band like them.
The Tubes had amazing stage shows, too.
That's why when I had the chance to go see American Utopia I took it because is was as close to seeing the TH's as I could get.
You gotta watch entire movie ....its legendary and you'll love whole thing! Keep your eyes open its coming back to theaters this year maybe even soon
It's so funny seeing two metalheads losing their shit over the Talking Heads! 🤣
I was fortunate enough to see this tour in 1983. Great show. I just saw the movie again in an IMAX theatre. Wonderful.
Shoutout to the two back up singing young ladies on David's right. They are working as hard as he is and killing it ♥
The entire show wouldn't work without them.
I was in a bar in the mid 70's, the owners daughter came in with a stack of tickets for a new band named Talking heads. She was trying to give them away, no takers. What fools we were, at least me. Jim
You guys make me feel so old...
"This ain't no foolin' 'round."
Peace on earth.
You guys are the perfect reactors for this artist. Great music video doubling as a workout video.
This whole band was just on fire that night!!!
Do it Travis Do it! You'll be righting a wrong. It's wrong that someone hasn't done it already.
HAHAHA! I WILL BE LISTENING TO THIS ALOT TRYING TO START BY LEARNING THE WORDS BUT NO PROMISES!!
it begins, "hi. i've got a tape i want to play." click. magic happens.
My fave performance of my fave Talking Heads song! ♥ seeing peeps reaction to this video! 😃
Love you guys. Talking heads are dope.
Magic! Tina Weymouth is my favorite bass player.
This is classic Talking Heads: Incredibly catchy hooks, insane combination of funk/new wave/punk -- and ironic/intentionally juxtaposed presentation. Listen to the lyrics. They are ACTUALLY about life during wartime. Here's some to consider (and I'll bet you there are those in Ukraine who totally relate to these lyrics):
"Heard of a van that's loaded with weapons
Packed up and ready to go
Heard of some gravesites, out by the highway
A place where nobody knows
The sound of gunfire, off in the distance
I'm getting used to it now
Lived in a brownstone, lived in a ghetto
I've lived all over this town"
Or how about this stuff:
"Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock
We blended in with the crowd
We got computers, we're tapping phone lines
I know that that ain't allowed
We dress like students, we dress like housewives
Or in a suit and a tie
I changed my hairstyle, so many times now
I don't know what I look like
'You make me shiver, I feel so tender
We make a pretty good team
Don't get exhausted, I'll do some driving
You ought to get you some sleep
Burned all my notebooks, what good are notebooks?
They won't help me survive
My chest is aching, burns like a furnace
The burning keeps me alive
Do it!!! Let go on stage. Reveal you spirit fully. It's what the great ones do. I saw this movie in 1983 in a theatre as a 25 year old college student. It was in my head for weeks afterwards. Thank you guys for your, always, great reactions. Much love, Neil

This is one of my favorite groups! Fun reaction!
That was the best! Check out bass player Tina Weymouth’s band Tom Tom Club and their song “Genius of Love.” Very influential tune.
Bowie said "he (Byrne) is one of the most talented people on earth."
BTW, I was at the Santa Monica Civic where they filmed that!
This whole act has so much energy.
Great reaction 🤣!
I grew up with Talking Heads. Saw them 6 times. From when it was 4 to seemed like 40 on stage!
Took me back to High school. We were so intrigued when they first came out, and they kept us entertained for many years.
Travis' reaction is gold! I've always marvelled at and wondered what was in David's mind! Brilliance and intelligent yet so childlike!
👍
he def took some risks for sure... looks like it paid off!!
heavy topic with lots of duality with the frantic dance of living in the middle of war...friggin brilliant art. Just saw Elizabeth's review and saw yours...had to click it, you guys are fun. I saw them live years ago...many. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Do it, do it Travis 💯. Greetings from Italy and Belgium.

Stop making sense is timeless. Reminds me of my dad, we all used to get down when this movie was on. Miss you dad.
I knew I’d be entertained, but I completely lost it when Susie said “This is like a TikTok!”
I still have a dozen bootleg cassette tapes from these guys.
So good. And a huge rabbit hole.

You haven't lived until you've also seen "Take Me To The River" from this concert
You two have the funnest response to this song 😊awesome
This performance is everything!! ✌❤
Ty! Subscribed after first reaction. :)
It sure doesn't seem like 40 years ago. Still love Talking Heads!
You just got a new subscriber! This reaction is great! You really need to watch the whole show Stop Making Sense! Its amazing!

When Annie yells out; this is like a tik tok" I absolutely crack up!

Came for the song/video. Stayed for all of the interruptions and prattling while the music was playing. Total groove killers
I saw them on this tour in Toronto in 1982. Tina Weymouth (bass) was very pregnant but didn’t miss a single dance step all night. Incredible performance by one of the most underrated live bands Ive ever seen❤
Such a fantastic live performance!
I had the pleasure of seeing David Byrne, the lead singer live at the Sydney Opera House a few years back. Although silver haired now, he has still got it. Same energy.
Seen a few live videos of them, amazing performances
The film this performance is from was directed by Jonathan Demme, who went on to direct The Silence of the Lambs. Among many other great films
I changed my hairstyle so many times, I don't know what I look like.
Great live music when people know what there doing
Greatest band ive ever seen live...David Byrne and Tom Tom Club were awesome in "Stop making Sense" How that for a Cardio workout...lol
Talking Heads, come for the concert.....stay for the show! ❤
The podcast Strong Songs did an incredible episode about this whole live concert, including backgrounds on the artists who joined them for these shows, and how they changed up the tracks from their studio version to live...it's REALLY good and well worth the listen!
This is one of my favorite bands of all time and this is one of the many reasons David Bern is such a fantastic front man and an inspiration
Y'all are freaking adorable! A new fan in Texas. And....does anyone have any questions?
LOVE This video & song!! He's so funny
And extremely talented. The whole band
Is Amazing 😍!! ❤️❤️
Talking Heads, "Girlfriend is Better," live 1984, is hilarious! 😂
The 40th anniversary of this concert is this year and it will be in theaters around the country.
That concert is still considered one of the best ever seen! Love it.😊
Their keyboards for this era was a guy by the name of Bernie Worrell...prior to joining the Heads (and maybe simultaneously) he was in Parliament/Funkadelic.
And to find out they filmed it too, was super cool.
that is awesome u were there!!
@@TheWolfHunterZ Another venue, but same tour. My third TH concert.
great concert!
One of the best concert tours of all time.
This was a movie released into theaters so I'm sure the entire thing is planned. Great concert have watched it over, over and over!
